COMPANY HISTORY
P
iaggio Aero Industries was established in November 1998
by a group of shareholders, headed by Josè Di Mase and
Piero Ferrari, Vice-President of Maranello’s Ferrari
(Ferrari S.p.A.), who acquired the assets of the aerospace business
formerly known as Rinaldo Piaggio S.p.A.
Piaggio Aero Industries is one of the world’s oldest aircraft
manufacturers. For over a century,
Piaggio has produced a family of
aircraft that have become part of the
legend of aviation. The company
started business in Genova in 1884,
fitting out passenger ship and
manufacturing rolling stock for the
developing railway infrastructure at the turn of the century.
The successful business led Piaggio to build a factory in
Finale Ligure in 1906. Aircraft manufacturing and aircraft
engine manufacturing started in 1915 and 1925
respectively. Since its inception more than 50 aircraft
models have been designed and manufactured.

PIAGGIO AMERICA
A subsidiary of Piaggio Aero Industries, Piaggio America is located
in West Palm Beach, Florida, at the Palm Beach International Airport,
in the facilities of Jet Aviation International. Piaggio America is
responsible for Avanti P180 sales, marketing, customer support,
service centers and aircraft completions in North America.
Piaggio America completes aircraft through its affiliation with
Stevens Aviation of Greenville, South Carolina. It operates
an extensive service and support network through the following
Authorized Service Centers:

PIAGGIO AERO FRANCE
Created in the year 2000 in Nice, Piaggio Aero
France is a research and development center which
employs highly qualified people, mainly graduated
engineers. As a branch office of Piaggio Aero
Industries technical department, Piaggio Aero
France is responsible for the development of new
projects in the field of Avionics, Systems and
Structures, and it backs up Piaggio Aero main
engineering department.
FACILITIES
P
iaggio Aero Industries is an established, leading international
aerospace company with three major aircraft and engine
production facilities covering 120,000 square meters (1.3
million square feet) in the northwest Italian cities of Genoa Sestri
and Finale Ligure.
In addition, Piaggio Aero is building a new state-of-the-art
facility in Villanova d’Albenga, designed to implement the
latest lean manufacturing technology. This lean philosophy
will increase production capacity, efficiency and optimize
workflow. Piaggio Aero is building this facility in response
to the rapid expansion of its business. The new production
facility will better position the company to successfully
meet the challenges of the market.
Final aircraft assembly, flight-testing and aircraft overhaul
operations are located at the corporate headquarters in
Genoa Sestri. Piaggio Aero’s service center,
established inside the Genoa International
airport, offers full service support to Avanti
P180s and aircrafts under Jar 145 certification.
Aircraft and engine components, manufacturing,
general engineering, engine maintenance and
overhaul are based in Finale Ligure.
Operations include a maintenance center and two
production areas, one for engines and sheet metal parts,
another for major aircraft sub-assemblies (aero structures).
Piaggio Napoli
The Technology Center in the Campanian region of Italy
focuses on aero structure design and innovative systems
research. It includes the Piaggio High Technology (PHT)
division, an innovative corporate research facility developing
aeronautical technologies. PHT specialists are committed
to establishing the PHT as an international Center of
Excellence for aeronautic research and development. A joint
partnership between Piaggio Aero Industries, the CIRA (Italian
Center for Aerospace Research) and other major European
research centers is resulting in newer and even more impressive
products for Piaggio Aero.

On Ground) time. Piaggio Aero Industries is also developing a
comprehensive browser-based application that is engineered
to give Piaggio Aero Industries customers access to parts, expert
service advice, technical manuals and service bulletins anywhere,
anytime via the Internet and training.
Piaggio Aero Industries is expanding world wide the customer
support network including enhanced customer support
operations for the Americas. Currently, product support
is provided by toll free telephone number, e-mail and
fax connections to our customer service operations centers.

ENGINES
P
iaggio Aero Industries is the only company in the world
active both in the Aircraft and in the Engine business.
Piaggio Aero Industries currently manufactures parts and
performs maintenance, repair and overhaul operations on turbojet,
turbo shaft and turboprop engines under license from RollsRoyce (UK) and Honeywell (USA), and Long Term Agreements
with other Original Equipment Manufacturers, such as Pratt
& Whitney, Pratt & Whitney Canada and Microturbo. These
engines power civil and military aircraft and helicopters.
In June 2000 Piaggio Aero
Industries signed a collaboration
agreement with Rolls – Royce
to join the RTM 322 turbo
shaft engine program as a
manufacturing partner. As of
today, Piaggio Aero Industries
manufactures a significant share
of the RTM 322 engine parts.
Piaggio Aero Industries has been
selected by Pratt & Whitney to
supply the Low Pressure Turbine
case and the bearing compartment housings for the F 135
engine, powering the F 35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
Piaggio Aero Industries has also experience in the area
of infrared suppression systems (IRS) for helicopters. The
Agusta A129, part of the Italian Army fleet, is currently
equipped with an IRS designed, tested and manufactured
by Piaggio Aero Industries.
AEROSTRUCTURES

assemblies and in designing
complex aircraft components
and sub-assemblies to be
produced by state-of-the-art
machine tools.
Piaggio Aero Industries currently manufactures structural
parts of the Dassault Falcon 2000 EX business jet and
the central wing box for the Lockheed-Martin/Alenia
(LMATTS) C27 J tactical transport aircraft, as well as
parts and sub-assemblies of other fixed wing and rotary
wing aircraft for some major international manufactures.
In 2003 Lockheed - Martin has awarded Piaggio Aero
Industries with a contract to manufacture parts for the
F 35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) aircraft.
PIAGGIO AERO INDUSTRIES AND FERRARI
T
he Piaggio Avanti P180 aircraft is often referred to as the
“Ferrari of the Sky”. Both offer advanced technology,
innovative style and unrivalled comfort. The Maranello
racing team has been flying on the Avanti since 2000. It is also
the choice of President Luca di Montezemolo, general manager
Jean Todt and world champion Formula One driver Michael
Schumacher – who wears the Piaggio Aero logo on his race
helmet. One of the most recognized logos in the world is the
Ferrari “prancing horse”, which is proudly displayed on the
Piaggio Avanti – the only aircraft worthy of the symbol of
the Ferrari brand. Ironically, by showcasing the prancing
horse on the Avanti, the Ferrari logo has returned to its
roots. Many are not aware of this true story. Enzo Ferrari
got his inspiration for the logo from an airplane.
The prancing horse was the symbol used by the Count
Francesco Baracca - one of the greatest pilots of the Italian
Airforce - on the tail of his airplane during WWI.
In 1923 after Enzo Ferrari (nicknamed “The Drake”)
won on the Savio circuit, Countess Paolina - Baracca’s
mother - donated him the symbol of the prancing horse
suggesting him to place it on his cars stating that it will
bring him luck. Ferrari accepted the gift adding to the
symbol the color yellow, official color of the city of Modena.
Since then the prancing horse has remained the Ferrari
trademark, and for the past five years it has also been
proudly displayed on the Avanti. The logos aren’t the only
connections between the car and the aircraft. As the
president of Piaggio Aero Industries and vice president
of Ferrari S.p.A., Piero Ferrari links the world’s most
authoritative ambassadors of Italian technology – Piaggio
Aero Industries and Ferrari.

Piaggio
