Henry Ford Community College AACC SBC Excelerator Grant Evaluation Report June 24, 2003 SBC Program n n n n n Fast-track training in Information Technology for the unemployed and under represented populations Network administration and voice and data cabling is a strong growth area Provides a career path in the information technology field Strong enrollment in traditional CCNA classes Initial contact with employers indicated a need for skilled workers in the area Student Demographics Student Demographics n n n CCNA: 8 students completed: 7 males, 1 female 2 Asian Americans, 3 African -Americans, 3 Caucasians FVDC Cohort 1 : 8 students completed: 5 males, 3 females 4 African Americans, 3 Caucasians, 1 Hispanic FVDC Cohort 2: 3 students completed: 1 male, 2 females 3 African Americans Ethnicity of Completers 4.5 4 4 # of Students 3.5 3 3 3 3 3 2.5 Cacasian African American Hispanic 2 Other 2 1.5 1 1 0.5 0 CCNA FVDC 1 Program FVDC 2 Gender of Completers 8 7 7 # of Students 6 5 Male 5 4 Female 3 3 2 2 1 1 1 0 CCNA FVDC 1 Program FVDC 2 Workforce Development Provides job experience for students. n Provides a feedback mechanism for IT curricula. n Provides the IT industry with a source for training and potential employees. n Best Practices n n n n n Weekly luncheon meetings with business and industry representatives Featured an employer exchange with students and recruiters from the industry Worked in partnership with Workforce Development Boards Students received college credit for courses and a certificate of completion A “deluxe” completion ceremony that included family members, government representatives, industry representatives and college officials Best Practices Presented By Senator Irma Clark Presented By Henry Ford Community College Outcomes n n n n n n 3 students have enrolled in the Associates Degree program at Henry Ford Community College 3 students have obtained entry level jobs in the field with an anticipated 4 – 5 more students interviewing for positions at this time. 2 students obtained internship experience in IT in large organizations 3 FVDC students studied for and passed the BICSI Level 1 exam 3 FVDC students from Cohort 2 are currently preparing for the BICSI exam CCNA students are preparing for the Cisco Certification exam Curriculum Cisco Networking Academy n CCNA Semesters 1 - 4 n FVDC: Fundamentals of Voice and Data Cabling n Additional class days, reference text, lab materials and tools for FVDC n CCNA CCNA Career Path Cisco Routers & Switches Our SBC CCNA Class Class Environment FVDC Cabling Infrastructure Voice and Data Cabling Our SBC FVDC Class Labs Unanticipated Successes Unanticipated Successes Faculty reconciled differences in curriculum and certification exam for curriculum revision n Networking degree with the CIS department as a result of this program n Sustainability All CIS classes will market this new degree and these courses n Agencies would like these courses, but the program requires extra staffing n Special Challenges Special Challenges Agencies require extra staffing and time for recruitment n Academic requirements eliminate some who would benefit from the training n Participants needed a strong web of support from all stakeholders: education, workforce development agencies, business, and industry n
