This is critical. You can have the most talented athletes on the planet and yet suffer through a losing season if they are not physically prepared for battle. These athletes must be shown the proper ways to maintain strength and endurance for the game. They must be training correctly and they must be doing the right things to prevent injuries. We have developed a Special Strengths Certificate program to help coaches, programs and athletes perform at their very best, in and out of season. We have various levels. Some collegiate strength coach staffs have successfully completed the Full Packages. We also offer a Basic Package and a Personal Trainer/Coach Package for individuals and smaller institutions with budget concerns. We as trainers have to become more knowledgeable and perform better, the same requirements we demand from our athletes. I have had many coaches pass the exam and state that it was the most difficult course they endured, yet the most informative. We also produce webinars, offer consultations and we carry an extensive library of Books and DVD's to share the knowledge of what it takes to create world class athletes. • Over the years we have been bombarded with equipment claims that will add 8-12" to verticals and take four to five tenths off 40 times in a matter of weeks. In addition to these scams is the old school mentality stuck in the 70's with the onslaught of 'machines'. The money market for equipment sales is bodybuilding, health clubs and fitness centers. These facilities are loaded with isolation machines, trained to build muscle size. This type of equipment is also convenient for circuit style training centers that want to get members in and out quickly. It has no place in an athletic performance training center. Running, jumping, cutting, diving, throwing and most every other movement required in a sport involves chains of muscle groups working together. Westside Barbell equipment trains athletes the same way they play, working the correct muscle groups simultaneously in the same way they are used on the fields, courts and mats. A Leg Extension or Leg Curl Machine trains one muscle at a time. Most arm, chest and back machines do the same. Take a look at Westside equipment and you will see the difference. Too many athletes are weak in the neck and lower back areas. We know too well about the neck injury crisis. What you may not know is that a weak lower back or posterior chain will lead to back injuries, pulled and torn hamstrings and knee injuries. Your athletes have to get stronger in these and other areas to enhance speed and explosive power and to reduce injuries. But first, we must acknowledge that strength is measured in velocity. Isometric strength (zero velocity), quasi-isometric strength (zero velocity), strength speed slow velocity, speed strength (intermediate velocity), explosive strength (fast velocity). The three main sport strengths are: Explosive Strength which is trained at 30% to 40% of a one rep max. Speed strength which is trained at 75% to 85% of a one rep max. Strength speed which is trained at 90% and above for maximal strength. When developing Explosive Strength , shock training is recommended. We can build Explosive Strength through depth jumps with an immediate rebound. This will stimulate the muscle by inducing a fast stretch proceeding any voluntary effort. Supertraining P. 265 Sixth Edition To increase K-E (Kinetic Energy) it is better to increase velocity not mass. This means its effect comes from falling from a certain distance. When thinking of shock training, plyometrics is only one method to choose from. When trying to bring forth a very intense stimulation to force the body to reach a higher level of functional acceleration. More can be found in Supertraining P. 275 Sixth Edition Other shock methods are many of Westside’s max effort training: 1. Supramaximal method 2. Repeated single 1RM training 3. Forced repetitions 4. Maximal eccentrics 5. Maximal concentrics 6. Power rack training But still, the quest for explosive and other special strengths continues. This brings us to contrast training methods. Some early methods by Dr. A.P Bondarchukl and Dr. Yuri Verkhoshankky were the heavy method effort (weights at 90% and above), followed immediately by lifting a light load of 30%-40% or 60% for a few reps very explosively. Perhaps the weight release system was more efficient as the barbell was loaded to 80% on the average including 20% of the load on the weight releasers. The athlete would lower the load eccentrically until the weight releaser was detached from the bar with its 20% of the load and then the 60% of the bar weight is raised as fast as possible on the concentric phase. For a greater training effect, use rubber bands as well as weight to the bar causing two important and unexpected occurrences: first an overspeed eccentric phase producing a greater stretch reflex, and second the bands will supply accommodating resistance. We know that any training stimulus will diminish as the body adapts to a system of exercise. To counteract this, the methods and exercises as well as using a complex of special means must be rotated constantly. As Dr. Ben Tabachnik said “to adapt to training is to never adapt”. But what about static work? There is always the problem and what works best? It has never been shown what method is superior – Static or Dynamic. We do know that a combined method is best from the development of explosive and speed strength for the training of weightlifters and track and field athletes. The Static overcome by Dynamic method works best for explosive strength with 30% of the athletes 1RM. A second method with both Static overcome Dynamic action with a constant load of 75% to 85% while doing jumps from a half squat position for not only speed strength but absolute strength. Dobrovolsky 1972-73 What if Dr. Bondarchukl and Dr. Verkhoshansky had a device that would allow them to pull on a bar or on a bar statically then immediately it would release the tension and lift a sub maximal load of a predetermined percentage of 30% to 40% for explosive and 70% to 85% for speed strength or 90% and up to 100% for strength speed or absolute strength?
