THE COEUR D’ALENE RESORT
The Coeur d’Alene Resort is located in northern Idaho approximately 31 miles
east of Spokane, Washington, and 100 miles south of the Canadian border.
Rising 18 stories high at water’s edge, the distinctive towers are capped by steep
copper roofs and copper-peaked belfries. The resort overlooks Lake Coeur
d’Alene and is nestled in the foothills of the Bitterroot Mountains.
The Coeur d’Alene Resort brings five-star luxury to the edge of America’s most
beautiful lakefront communities. With a Gold Medal golf course, a European
spa, and six restaurants to choose from, Coeur d’Alene is the perfect place to get
away from the world.
The Coeur d’Alene Golf Course is on the beautiful shores of Lake Coeur
d’Alene and opened in 1991 to unprecedented reviews and awards, establishing
itself as a ranking premier destination golf course. The course is also the home
of the world-famous floating green.
With an idyllic landscape, year-round activities, and its spectacular setting – all at
the shore of one of America’s most beautiful lakes – it is no wonder that Coeur
d’Alene has been christened the “Playground of the Northwest”. With luxurious
accommodations, rejuvenating spa treatments, sumptuous cuisine, and worldclass golfing, this five-star resort continues to be the destination of choice for
discerning travelers worldwide.
Please mark your calendars now so that you can join us for the EJOPA
Convention from June 8 through 12, 2016. As in the past, we will have a great
academic program, featured speakers and, of course, many activities for our
companions.

PAPPY BOYINGTON FIELD (KCOE)
This year’s airport choice for the annual convention is the
Coeur d’Alene Airport – Pappy Boyington Field (KCOE).
The airport is located less than 8 miles from our hotel, the
Coeur d’Alene Resort. The closest commercial field for
those not flying in via private aircraft is Spokane, WA
(KGEG), a 45-minute drive to the Coeur d’Alene Resort.
The FBO of choice is Southfield Fuel, and EJOPA has
negotiated no fees of any type for this year’s convention
(with minimum fuel purchase) for all EJOPA members.
Southfield has two large-capacity fuel trucks that provide a
fast and up-to-date fuel service capable of providing
immediate quick turns upon request. Southfield also has
on hand 5 aircraft tugs and all the required towbar heads
and attachments to handle the Eclipse. All of the staff at
Southfield are very helpful and strive to provide the
friendliest and fastest service available in the area.

Brian Shul - “Sled Driver”
Friday, June 10 - 9:00am - 10:30am
Brian was born in Quantico, Virginia, in
1948. He graduated from East Carolina
University in 1970 with a degree in
History. That same year he joined the
Air Force and attended pilot training at
Reese AFB in Texas.
Brian served as a Foreign Air Advisor in
the Viet Nam conflict, flying 212 close
air support missions in conjunction with
Air America. Near the end of all
hostilities, his AT-28 aircraft was shot
down near the Cambodian border.
Unable to eject from the aircraft, Brian
was forced to crash land into the jungle.
Miraculously surviving, he was severely
burned in the ensuing fireball. Crawling
from the burning wreckage, he was finally found and
rescued by a Special Forces team.
He was evacuated to a military hospital in Okinawa where
he was expected to die. Barely surviving 2 months of
intensive care, in 1974 he was flown to the Institute of
Surgical Research at Ft Sam Houston, Texas. During the
following year, he underwent 15 major operations. During
this time he was told he'd never fly again and just lucky to
be alive. Months of physical therapy followed, enabling
Brian to eventually pass a flight physical and return to
active flying duty.
Two days after being released from the hospital, Brian was
back flying Air Force fighter jet aircraft. He went on to fly
the A-7D, and was then selected to be a part of the first
operational A-10 squadron at Myrtle Beach, SC, where he
was on the first A-10 air show demonstration team. After
a tour as an A-10 Instructor Pilot in Arizona, he went on
to instruct at the Air Force's Fighter Lead-In School as the
Chief of Air-to-Ground Academics. As a final assignment
in his career, Brian volunteered for and was selected to fly
the super secret spy plane, the SR-71. This assignment
required an astronaut type physical just to qualify, and
Brian passed with no waivers.
Brian's phenomenal comeback story from laying near dead
in the jungle of Southeast Asia, to later flying the world's
fastest, highest flying jet, has been the subject of
numerous magazine articles and an inspiration to many.

JUNE 8 - 12, 2016
After 20 years and 5000 hours in fighter
jets, Brian retired from the Air Force in
1990. He went on to pursue his writing
and photographic interests. In addition
to running his own photo studio in
northern California, he has authored five
books on flying, for which he did all the
writing and photography.
His first two books are about flying the
SR-71 Blackbird. Written in a very nontechnical style, these books give the
reader a first hand account of being in
the cockpit of the world's fastest jet
throughout a variety of interesting
missions. The books are filled with
stunning photos from the author's
personal collection and have become the most popular
SR-71 books ever done. Brian's third and fourth books are
about America's air demonstration teams, the Air Force
Thunderbirds, and the Navy Blue Angels. Again filled with
unique aerial images, these books take the reader into the
dynamic formations of these world famous teams. Brian is
now the only man in America to have flown with both the
Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels extensively as a guest in
the making of his colorful books. His fifth book is a
special remake of his original SR-71 book, entitled Sled
Driver, issued in a very richly crafted Limited Edition of
only 3500 copies to commemorate the Centennial of
Flight in 2003.
Brian's story is unique, and he has been asked to speak at
numerous functions nationwide on his varied experiences.
His entertaining slide show and dynamic message make for
an unforgettable presentation. He has been the featured
speaker for medical groups, aviation safety seminars, and
air museum programs, and frequently has been a
motivational keynote speaker for a variety of corporations
across America. Most recently his patriotic talks
concerning terrorist attacks against America have received
national acclaim.
Brian was recently honored as an Outstanding Alumni
from East Carolina University. He owns Gallery One, a
photo studio in northern California, and divides his time
between writing, photography, public speaking, and
backpacking in the high Sierras.

John & Martha King - How to Avoid Expecting Too Much from Your Eclipse
Saturday, June 11 - 3:00pm - 4:00pm
John and Martha King´s use of
technology and clear, simple, and
fun teaching have made aviation
knowledge more accessible to
pilots throughout the world.
After a dismal failure in a business
for which they did not have a
passion, John and Martha King
decided to relax and indulge their
love of flying for a while. In the
early 1970s, they began teaching
flying to mark time while looking
for a "serious business." After
teaching live seminars for over a
decade they put their courses on
video and began to revolutionize
the flight training industry.
Today their company, King Schools, Inc which started in a
spare bedroom in the Kings´ house, operates out of a
dedicated complex in San Diego, California that includes a
video and software production facility.
Over more than 40 years, King Schools has delivered
many millions of courses to pilots in training. Through
intimate video instruction John and Martha King have
taught more pilots than anyone in the history of aviation
—for many years teaching more than half the pilots in the
United States learning to fly. It's no surprise that pilots
throughout the world know John and Martha and regard
them as their personal aviation mentors.
King Schools continues to transform pilot training by
pioneering the development of multimedia training
programs on many aviation subjects including groundbreaking programs on aviation risk management.
Through the years, the Kings have retained their
enthusiasm for flying. They fly their own Dassault Falcon
10 jet wherever they go, swapping captain and copilot
duties on each leg. They have flown as pilots in every
continent of the world except Antarctica, including a trip
completely around the world via the length of Russia.
FAA rating on their pilot and
instructor certificates. Martha is
the only woman to achieve this
complete ratings sweep. They
remain active in many categories,
regularly flying everything from
jets to piston airplanes and
helicopters. They have enjoyed
periodically serving as back-up
pilots for the Fujifilm blimp. They
have flown the blimp over such
events as the Kentucky Derby, the
Davis Cup, the Super Bowl, the
U.S. Open tennis tournament, and
the Experimental Aircraft
A s s o c i a t i o n c o n ve n t i o n a t
Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Their airship
adventures have been part of national television coverage
on the Fox, ESPN, CBS, and USA networks.
The Kings appear frequently on national TV as aviation
experts. They also have starred in numerous video
presentations on Microsoft´s Flight Simulator program
providing instruction for the "Getting Started" Wizard and
for numerous informational topics. Plus, they were
featured on CNN's "Business Unusual."
John and Martha have been champions for the cause of
improving the risk management practices of general
aviation pilots and they speak to thousands of pilots each
year on aviation safety. They work with the FAA's National
Aviation Safety Program in producing safety videos. They
also volunteer their time to speak to college classes on
starting a small business.
For many years both John and Martha served on the
Board of Directors of the San Diego Air and Space
Museum and of the Charles A. and Anne Morrow
Lindbergh Foundation. John is previous Chairman of the
Lindbergh Foundation, and they are now both on the
Honorary Board. Martha was formerly the Chair of the
Chancellor´s Community Advisory Board of the
University of California, San Diego.
In September of 1994 John and Martha became the first
and only couple to both hold every category and class of

To Depart Safely IFR
Saturday, June 11 - 9:00am - 10:00am - Pilot In Command Attitude, Awareness And
Authority
Erik Eliel, founder and president of Radar
Training International, has been involved in
aviation since 1979. His earliest years as a
professional aviator were as an Air Force
pilot flying the T-38, C-141, and the U-2.
His interest with radar began in 1991 while
flying airlift and transport missions to
Europe, Africa, South America, and the
Middle East. In 1997, Erik was selected to
join the cadre of instructors at the Air
Force Advanced Instrument School in San
Antonio, Texas, teaching advanced
instrument concepts to pilots representing,
NASA, federal law enforcement agencies,
and all branches of the DOD. It was here that Erik
developed and taught the first-ever formal weather radar
course for Air Force pilots.
Erik’s early interest with weather radar and severe
convective weather was inspired by the work of industry
legends Bob Buck, Jim Cook, J.T. Lee, Archie Trammell,
and Dr. Fred Bates. Currently, his radar seminar is offered
both domestically and abroad and has been presented to
professional pilots representing the flight departments of
Fortune 500 companies, aviation associations, a major
airline, the military, as well as dispatchers
and meteorologists of aviation-related
companies. He has been called on by the
manufacturers of airborne weather radar
systems to consult in the design,
operational employment of, and evaluation
of their systems. His radar- and weatherrelated articles have been published in the
NBAA Journal of Business Aviation and
in Business & Commercial Aviation. In
addition, his input has been solicited for
safety-orientated publications such as the
Flight Safety Foundation’s magazine
AeroSafety World.
Erik has over 13,000 hours of flying time and is currently a
line pilot for a major airline, logging more than 600 hours
annually. He also maintains his CFI, CFII, and MEI ratings.
His company, Radar Training International, maintains active
memberships in multiple professional flying organizations
and associations including National Business Aviation
Association (NBAA), American Institute of Aeronautics
and Astronautics (AIAA), and Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Association (AOPA).

EJOPA PRE-CONVENTION TOUR
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 8 - 9:30AM - 3:30PM
The historic mining town of
Wallace (population 784) is
nestled beneath Interstate 90,
halfway between two ski and
recreation areas in northern
Idaho’s beautiful Silver Valley.
The town has long been famous
as the “Silver Capital of the
World”, with 1.2 billion ounces
of silver produced in Shoshone
county since 1884. Silver mining is still a big part of the
economy, but today it is carried out in total harmony with
a pristine mountain environment that attracts outdoor
recreation enthusiasts from around the world.
Wallace is also known for the fact that every downtown
building is on the National Register of Historic Places,
which is why the government finally had to go over them
instead of through them in order to complete the Interstate
Highway system in 1991. Now the Trail of the Coeur
d’Alenes paved bike path is directly under Interstate 90 as
it passes above Wallace, following the famous South Fork
of the Coeur d’Alene River through the narrow Silver
Valley — the only place on earth where more than a
billion ounces of silver were mined in 100 years.
Drive through the mining ghost town of Burke, Idaho;
tour Historic Wallace, Idaho; and go underground on the
Sierra Silver Mine Tour. Guests are whisked from its
downtown office to the
mine portal aboard a
S a n Fr a n c i s c o - s t y l e
streetcar. During the 55minute tour, one
experiences the mining
equipment used then,
and still today, with an
actual miner-guide. Tour

EJOPA COMPANIONS TOUR
SATURDAY, JUNE 11 - 9:30AM - 3:30PM
Our destination will be Sandpoint, located on the northern
tip of Idaho, and it is no ordinary vacation destination.
Located on a magnificent 43-mile-long Lake
Pend Oreille, surrounded by the Selkirk
and Cabinet mountains, Sandpoint is
blessed with outstanding attractions, but it
goes deeper than that. The town itself is
home to an exceptional thriving arts
community, the historic Panida Theater, a
busy events schedule, a plethora of
excellent restaurants, fine hotels and
unusual shopping keynoted by the national
retailer, Coldwater Creek. How do you
describe extraordinary? Just say “Sandpoint, Idaho.”
One of our stops will be a cruise aboard the private yacht
Shawnodese on spectacular Lake Pend Oreille. The
Shawnodese is a unique chartering vessel designed and
constructed by Captain Curtis Pearson expressly for
cruising North Idaho’s magnificent Lake Pend Oreille. His
vision — taking two years to complete — was to construct
a charter boat embodying the elegance of an old river boat
while retaining the intimacy of a private yacht. The richly
appointed Shawnodese fulfills his extraordinary vision.
Passengers enjoy an unparalleled experience making any
event into an extraordinary occasion.
Another stop will be the Pend d’Oreille
Winery in downtown Sandpoint. Using
traditional French methods and grapes
sourced from world-class vineyards around
the Northwest, Pend d’Oreille Winery
produces award-winning wines including
Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Gris,
Viogner, the very popular Huckleberry
Blush, and new in 2009, the Meyer Reserve Cabernet
Sauvignon. EJOPA companions will have a private
luncheon at the winery.
The winery’s tasting room and lifestyle gift shop are not to
be missed when visiting Sandpoint. The wine bar and
tasting room features an elegant bar made of molded
concrete and hardwood created by local craftsmen.

EJOPA Companion Training Opportunity
For those of you who are ready to move beyond a beginner pinch-hitter course, would you be interested in:
* Getting more enjoyment out of flying in the Eclipse?
* Being safer – knowing you could handle the Eclipse if you had to?
* A 2-1/2 hour classroom session reviewing how to use the autopilot in your Eclipse?
* A 1-1/2 hour session practicing pattern flying and emergency landings in your pilot’s plane with an instructor in
the left seat?
A certificate of insurance naming EJOPA and Norton Aviation as additional insured will be needed to participate in this
portion of the training. The certificate must be in your possession at the Convention.
Having two people onboard who can fly, operate, and land the plane is a big bonus for safety. Taking any part of this course
will allow you to approach that goal.
Norton Aviation will again be offering a companion training classroom session customized to the Eclipse. The focus will be the
cockpit in general and the autopilot specifically. In addition to the ground school, they will be offering a 1.5 hour flying session
in your plane.
These activities are designed to enable companions to be more comfortable in the flying environment. Don’t hesitate, sign up
now! The 2-½ hour classroom session cost will be $125.00. The full session will be $675.00 and includes both classroom and in
aircraft training. The in-aircraft training is limited, and participation will be on a first-come/first-served basis.
* 2-1/2 hour classroom session – Thursday June 9th from 9:30am – 12:00pm.
* 1-1/2 hours practicing pattern flying and emergency landings at the airport
Slots available on Thursday PM June 9th - Friday AM/PM June 10th - Saturday AM/PM June 11th.
