TEGO Additives
Additives are substances added to coatings
and printing inks which, although present
in small quantities, exert a powerful
impact. Depending on the type of
additive, it is possible to optimize the
production process of a coating, adjust
application properties or systematically
control the properties of the cured
coating film. Wetting and dispersing
additives affect pigment wetting and
rapid development of tinting strength.
Defoamers and deaerators ensure a
foam-free and defect-free coating film.
Surface additives, such as our glide and
flow additives and our substrate wetting
additives, produce uniform flow behavior
and ideal surface smoothness.
Evonik's comprehensive chemical and
technological competencies form the
basis for a varied range of additives.
We make the most of Evonik's expertise
in organically modified polysiloxanes and
silicone resins.
Tego – Adding Advantages.
The TEGO® Phobe and TEGO® Protect
product lines impart water repellency and
provide the coating with, for example,
an anti-graffiti effect and therefore easy
to clean properties.

Deaerators
TEGO® Airex deaerators prevent the
formation of air occlusions and pinholes
in waterborne, solventborne and energycurable coatings. This is particularly
important in high viscosity or high solids
formulations and essential for airless/
airmix application.
Furthermore, preventing foam formation
during production and application is
particularly important in the case of
waterborne formulations. TEGO® Foamex
defoamers have also proven effective in
this situation (see page 7).

Letdown stage
TEGO® Foamex defoamers are available
as emulsions, solutions or concentrates.
Because of their optimized particle size,
emulsions have the greatest possible
effectiveness and compatibility especially
when added to the letdown and in
clear coats. Highly effective defoamer
concentrates are particularly good for
adding to the millbase or grind.
Grinding stage
TEGO® Foamex defoamers prevent
foam formation during production and
application of waterborne coatings and
printing inks. Pre-existing foam is destroyed
and air occlusions are prevented.

TEGO Co-Binders
Co-binders are added to the formulation
to give specific properties to the printing
ink or coating. In contrast to additives,
the concentrations used range between
5.0 and 20.0% relative to the main
binder.
The two groups of TEGO co-binders are
based on different technologies. They offer
customized solutions for diverse tasks.
TEGO® VariPlus are co-binders based
on modified ketone-aldehyde resins.
Their hard resin character provides
the formulator with a simple means
of increasing the hardness, gloss,
anti-blocking properties and drying
speed of printing inks and coatings.
The hyperbranched polymeric structures
yield low solution viscosities so that
VOC levels are reduced.
Selectively introduced functional groups
make TEGO® VariPlus products ideally
suited for pigment dispersions with high
color strength; they also improve
adhesion properties and are used to
supplement the TEGO® AddBond product
group in certain applications.
TEGO® AddBond products are polyesters.
Because of their special polymer structure
and type of functional groups, they
improve the bonding of coatings
on plastics and metals. This improves
corrosion resistance.
This expertise, combined with a sound
knowledge of interfacial chemistry,
makes Evonik a strong partner for meeting
the challenges of coating formulation.

TEGO® VariPlus
Several TEGO® VariPlus products can
be used as pigment concentrate resins for
the most diverse pigments. This enables
excellent gloss to be obtained even at
high pigment loading. Resins such as
TEGO® VariPlus SK and TEGO®
VariPlus CA, which contain hydroxyl
groups, are also used for modification
of binders.
TEGO® VariPlus products are widely
compatible hard resins used as co-binders
in paints, lacquers, printing and other
inks. They not only increase the solids
content and accelerate touch-drying but
also improve numerous properties such as
hardness, gloss and film build. Adhesion
on various substrates is increased, which
together with its resistance to hydrolysis,
enhances corrosion protection.

TEGO Specialty Binders
TEGO specialty binders’ unique properties,
such as weathering stability and high
resistance to heat and cold, result from a
combination of organic chemistry and
inorganic silicone chemistry. This
distinguishes them from purely organic
binders.
Targeted variation of the organic groups
(inter alia, alkyl and polyether) on the
siloxane backbone results in compounds
which, thanks to their broad property
spectrum, can be used in many diverse
areas of application. Their exceptional
properties include excellent chemical
resistance, good elasticity, excellent
release characteristics and an especially
high level of eco-compatibility.
They are, for example, particularly
suitable for high temperature resistant,
weatherproof, or easy to clean
pigmented coatings.
TEGO specialty binders enable formulation
of air-drying coating systems as well
as the stoving enamels used on ovens,
cookware and exhaust systems.
In new product development, Evonik
focuses heavily on eco-friendly products
which also comply with the new
requirements for VOCs. Thanks to our
strong concentration on future coating
technologies, we are already able to offer
aqueous silicone resins for heat-resistant
corrosion protection.

TEGO Nanoresins
Liquid silica-nanocomposites under the
trade names NANOCRYL®, NANOPOX®
and NANOPOL® are used in coatings
mainly to permanently improve their
surface hardness and thus increase
scratch-resistance without impairing
transparency and gloss. The portfolio of
these products is usable for UV- and
solventborne coatings, e.g. 2-component
polyurethane and 2-component epoxy
formulations as well. Incorporation is
achieved with simple dispersion, and the
need for bead milling is eliminated.
In addition, coatings can be modified with
silicone elastomer particles by the use
of ALBIDUR®. This results in smoother
surfaces and improved fracture toughness
and release properties without affecting
the glass transition temperature of the
cured formulation. These liquid products
can be stirred in easily into a formulation.
The products are available for all common
resin systems, e.g. UV- or 2-component
epoxy coatings.
For increasing coatings’ flexibility,
ALBIFLEX® can be added to epoxy or
UV-curable formulations. These co-binders
do not affect the color of the formulation
so the preferred use is in clear coat systems.
Due to the liquid character of these
products, they can be dispersed easily into
the binder system.

NANOCRYL®, NANOPOX®
and NANOPOL®
NANOCRYL® and NANOPOX®
enhance scratch- and abrasion-resistance
while maintaining both gloss and
transparency of the resin. These products
are silica-nanocomposites for energycurable coatings based on various (meth-)
acrylate and cycloaliphatic epoxy resins.
Both are highly transparent, boast low
viscosity and do not show sedimentation,
i.e. the processability remains essentially
unchanged in comparison to the respective base resin. Because of the liquid stage
of the NANOCRYL® and NANOPOX®
materials, they are easy to incorporate.
Stirring in the product is sufficient and
no bead milling is required. In this way,
the specific advantages of organic resins
and inorganic fillers can be combined
almost perfectly.

Acrylate, thermoplastic
Inorganic pigments
The use of TEGO® Dispers products also
enables costs to be reduced. As a result
of the low viscosity, pigment loading can
be significantly increased and a greater
amount of pigment can be dispersed in
each milling cycle. Therefore, maximum
color intensity is achieved through optimum pigment wetting.
Organic pigments
Wetting and dispersing additives wet and
stabilize the most diverse pigments. An
effective reduction in viscosity with tailormade additives is the prerequisite for the
manufacture of low VOC formulations.

Defoaming and
Deaerating
Defoamers/Deaerators for high solids coatings
Increasing the solids content at working
consistency and the limited choice of
solvents significantly affect the deaerating
characteristics of high solids coatings.
Consequently, they are frequently prone
to pinholing.
Effective deaerating combined with good
compatibility can be achieved with tailormade deaerators. Clear coats, in particular,
demand the use of highly efficient and
compatible deaerators.

Slip and flow additives
Slip and flow additives for high solids coatings
Inadequate flow is a frequently observed
weakness of high solids coatings. There is
a tendency to use low molecular weight
binders to achieve a low coating viscosity.
The choice of solvent, which also has a
major influence on flow, is limited by
regulatory constraints.
Depending on siloxane content and molecular
weight, our additives promote the slip and
flow/leveling characteristics of the finish
and also effectively prevent cratering and
foam formation.

Optimal substrate wetting is a prerequisite for defect-free finishes. Differences
in surface tension, caused for example
by contaminants, prevent the formation
of a continuous film. This can result in
cratering.

Co-Binders
The fundamental properties of a coating
are decisively influenced by the choice of
the main binder. However, it is not always
possible to achieve the required properties
in this manner.
Tego co-binders positively influence
properties such as hardness, touch-drying
speed and viscosity and, in particular,
improve adhesion to diverse substrates
such as plastics and metals.

TEGO® AddBond –
For Maximum Adhesion
TEGO® AddBond
Improving Adhesion
The products of the TEGO® AddBond series are specialty
polyester resins for use as adhesion-enhancing components in
solventborne, waterborne, or energy-curable coatings and
printing inks. Due to their broad compatibility with a large
number of binders, they are suitable for physically or oxidatively
drying, thermosetting, or energy-curable formulations.
TEGO® AddBond products improve adhesion to a number of
substrates, including critical substrates like metals, minerals, and
various types of plastics. Therefore, these can often be used in
under coats and primers. They also improve intercoat adhesion
so they are highly recommended even in multi-coat formulations.
The adhesion power of the TEGO® AddBond products,
combined with their excellent resistance to hydrolysis and their
water-repellent properties, significantly improve corrosion
protection in coatings.
In special effect coatings, TEGO® AddBond improves the
cohesion within the film layer. Also, these products help to
improve gloss and flexibility.

Properties and Applications
General
Because of free carboxyl groups present in the resins, reactions
may occur with basic pigments (e.g., zinc oxide). This reaction
could be beneficial and lead to a higher paint film density.
On the other hand, this may lead to an undesirable increase in
viscosity. Using smaller amounts of TEGO® AddBond or choosing
a more compatible grade could be helpful. Adhesion may
deteriorate if resins are used along with surfactants. Resins
may be combined with polysiloxanes in the usual dosages.
TEGO® AddBond HS
TEGO® AddBond HS is a high solids co-binder. The use of
TEGO® AddBond HS in paint formulations enables the VOC
content to be reduced. The product results in excellent
adhesion properties on metals and plastics.
TEGO® AddBond LTW, LTW-B and 2220 ND
The soft TEGO® AddBond LTW, LTW-B and 2220 ND have a
flexibilizing effect and differ from one another primarily in their
supply form. TEGO® AddBond 2220 ND is particularly suitable
in the can coating and coil coating sectors. Systems based on
saturated polyester resins, amine resins and isocyanate resins
demonstrate better storage and processing properties.
TEGO® AddBond LTH
The swelling of hard TEGO® AddBond LTH in water is very minimal.
Dissolved in plasticizers, it can be used in the manufacture of
self-adhering organosols and plastisols. One noteworthy feature
is that plasticizers do not migrate into TEGO® AddBond LTH
when it is applied to plasticizer-containing PVC. In energy-curable
systems TEGO® AddBond LTH tends to increase the curing speed.
Furthermore, volume shrinkage that occurs during curing can
be reduced. To achieve short dissolving times, heat should be
used along with fast mixers in the production of resin solutions.
A minimum dissolving temperature between 50° and 60°C is
recommended for solvents and monomers. For plasticizers this
temperature should be between 90° and 100°C.
TEGO® AddBond 1270
TEGO® AddBond leads to a significant increase of adhesion and
corrosion resistance of paints. After neutralizing with amines,
it is water reducible and can be used in water-dilutable paints.
TEGO® AddBond DS 1300
TEGO® AddBond DS 1300 is used in waterborne air-drying and
thermosetting coatings.

Properties and applications
Pigment concentrates
TEGO® VariPlus TC features nearly
universal solubility in organic solvents
with good compatibility and excellent
pigment wetting. For this reason, it is
particularly suitable as a carrier resin for
pigment concentrates. Combined with a
dispersing aid, these concentrates exhibit
high color strength and low viscosity.
TEGO® VariPlus UC is especially designed
for high solids pigment concentrates with
high pigment loading capacity. TEGO®
VariPlus 1201 TF is used as a gloss
promoting supplementary resin in high-
Broschüre_VariPlus_US_12_Seiten_end.indd 6
performance pigment concentrates.
Because of its very good wetting properties, TEGO® VariPlus DS 50 increases the
pigment loading capacity. This makes it
possible to obtain very stable pigment
concentrates and inks with an outstanding
gloss even at high levels of pigmentation.
Therefore, the use of dispersing additives
can be reduced significantly. TEGO®
VariPlus UC W 40 is designed for universal high performance pigment preparations with excellent compatibility in
waterborne systems.
08.03.2012 08:30:52
Printing inks
Soluble in alcohol, TEGO® VariPlus SK,
CA and 1201 TF are used in printing inks
based on polyvinyl butyral, nitrocellulose,
alkyd resins, maleic resins, or rosin resins
to accelerate drying and improve adhesion
and gloss. TEGO® VariPlus 1201 TF is
particularly suitable for the production of
printing inks that must exhibit good block
resistance after rapid through-drying.
Furthermore, in numerous binder combinations, TEGO® VariPlus 1201 TF
improves adhesion, even on PVC and
polyolefin substrates (like OPP). Special
benefits are achieved in hot stamping
foils. TEGO® VariPlus DS 50 is used in
waterborne printing inks to give higher
gloss, better adhesion and faster drying.
Ball-point pen pastes
Ball-point pen pastes owe their special
rheological properties to the unique
chemistry and structure of TEGO®
VariPlus CA, and, in particular, TEGO®
VariPlus SK. These prevent the pastes
and the inks in writing instruments from
drying out but also to set quickly after
writing.
Coatings
Because of its high Tg and special structure, TEGO® VariPlus DS 50 improves
the resistance of waterborne coatings
to water, solvents and chemicals. It also
improves the film hardness and the gloss.
When TEGO® VariPlus DS 50 is used in
plastic coatings or automotive OEM coatings, respectively, it improves adhesion to
the substrate and intercoat adhesion.
In wood coatings, TEGO® VariPlus DS 50
accelerates the surface drying, throughcure, hardness and gloss. TEGO® VariPlus
DS 50 used in leather coatings positively
influences gloss, adhesion and hardness.
TEGO® VariPlus SK and CA are applicable
as resin modifiers mainly to improve hardness and drying of solventborne coatings.
Product Group TEGO® VariPlus page 7
Broschüre_VariPlus_US_12_Seiten_end.indd 7
08.03.2012 08:30:54
PUR systems
Due to the high reactivity of their OH
groups with isocyanates, TEGO® VariPlus
CA, SK, 1201 TF and DS 50 are used in
PUR systems. In the case of TEGO®
VariPlus CA, account must be taken for
the residual moisture content.
Nitrocellulose coatings
The product group TEGO® VariPlus can
be used in the manufacture of all types of
nitrocellulose coatings. In nitrocellulose
wood coatings, they improve polishing
and adhesion. If TEGO® VariPlus SK is
used, additional elasticity and resistance,
as demonstrated by the Cold Check Test,
is improved.
Energy-curable systems
In energy-curable systems, TEGO®
VariPlus AP and SK are used to lower
volume shrinkage that occurs during
curing and thus to improve adhesion.
TEGO® VariPlus SK improves hardness
and gloss and can be used as a grinding
resin in pigment systems. Due to its
acetophenone base, TEGO® VariPlus AP
acts as a polymeric photoinitiator in
combination with an amine synergist.
TEGO® VariPlus 3350 UV reduces
volume shrinkage and tends to increase
curing speed.
Inks, toners
TEGO® VariPlus CA lends alcohol-based
inks used in roller-ball, felt and fiber-tip
pens their high water resistance. TEGO®
VariPlus SK is used in toners.
Paper varnishes
When TEGO® VariPlus CA and SK are
used in paper varnishes, their brightness,
lightfastness, neutrality, and unsaponifiability are an advantage. For example,
systems based on cellulose acetobutyrates
are water-clear and dry rapidly to produce
a non-abrasive surface with high gloss
and elasticity.
Hot melt compounds
In hot melt compounds, which are used to
protect tools and machine parts, TEGO®
VariPlus CA, 1201 TF and SK are used
to control the melt viscosity and the hardness of the cooled mass.
Recommended formulations are
available on request.

About us
Tego – one of Evonik Industries' leading brands.
As the leading supplier of specialty chemicals worldwide,
Evonik offers its customers in the coatings and printing inks
industry a unique range of products under the Tego brand
name. Our portfolio is the result of experience gained over
more than 25 years in which we have researched and developed optimal solutions which are ideal for our customers.
With over 200 products, the range currently includes not only
defoamers and deaerators but also wetting and dispersing
additives, leveling additives, energy-curable additives, sub
strate wetting additives, hydrophobing agents and even
co-binders and specialty binders.
We remove air from paints, make surfaces glossy and ensure
lacquers are scratch-resistant. Environmental concerns are
always of key importance when developing new products.
Besides our extensive expertise in providing tailor-made
solutions, our numerous contacts in more than 40 countries
are an additional advantage. This underlines our philosophy

A product’s first contact with the market
is critical for its success.
Similarly, the entire structure of a coating
depends on its first contact with the sub
strate. Adequate wetting of substrates
with low surface energies is often a challenge. This is where the use of substrate
wetting additives is essential.
This requires effective and compatible
deaeration, defoaming and optimum
color strength development through
rapid, thorough pigment dispersion
followed by stabilization. For a brilliant
overall performance, we offer TEGO®
Airex for deaeration, TEGO® Foamex
for defoaming and TEGO® Dispers for
pigment dispersion and stabilization.
The consumer’s first tangible contact
with the product is via the cured surface.
Excellent flow and leveling and the correct slip generate a positive impression
of quality which defines the future perception of the object’s performance.
Outstanding spreading and wetting on

series for energy-curable formulations,
can also provide solutions.
Increasing demands from coatings manufacture through to end use require system
specific additives. The growing number of
specialized binder types with increasing
diversity set the tone. The right visual
impression can only be obtained if conditions are optimal during the manufacture
and application of coatings.
Waterborne formulations, in particular,
require a surface tension reduction in the
liquid phase; TEGO® Wet and TEGO®
Twin provide the solution.

Webster defines innovation as the introduction of something new; a new idea, method,
or device; a novelty. In a recent issue of
Forbes Magazine, they went one step further, quoting Star Trek’s Captain Kirk and
said innovation was “boldly going where no
man has gone before.” While it’s quite common for industry to think of innovation in
terms of product development and intellectual property, there are numerous examples of
innovative thinking happening in every function of every company every day. Any process or activity that will make our business
operate more efficiently and profitably is an
example of innovation.
Innovation accelerates when ideas can be
exchanged in an open and risk free environment. On his website, www.innovationexcellence.com, Paul Hobcraft blogged a few
months back about the value of managing
innovation across three horizons – sustained
innovation (short-term, market maintenance),
transformative innovation (mid-term, market
transformation) and disruptive innovation
(long-term, creation of additional viable
options).
This issue of TEGOtalk is dedicated to our
recent innovations in market communication
and informational tools. It’s our wish that the
tools we have assembled and talk about in
this newsletter will help spark idea development or assist you in making your innovation
process fruitful across your entire innovation
horizon.
Continued Success,

TEGO Journal
The TEGO Journal, a leading reference guide in the coatings industry, is by far one of the most important tools offered from Evonik’s
coatings and additives innovator. The TEGO Journal provides a
technical background on common coating formulation issues such
as foam or pigment dispersion, plus an overview of TEGO products
including product recommendations. Information within the journal
satisfies readers of various backgrounds and years of experience.
Many coatings formulators use it as a training tool and reference
guide for new chemists.
Web Seminars
The Pocket TEGO
The Pocket TEGO, our compact reference work, fits comfortably in
the pocket of a lab coat so it is always at hand. It offers an extensive
collection of information to support the formulator’s daily work. In
addition to various formulas, conversions, and standards, it also
contains information on topics such as color, raw materials, and typical coating defects. The Pocket TEGO also includes a coatings glossary in five languages.
These web seminars are free of charge and protect the identity of all
participants while maintaining their ability to utilize a chat feature
within the web environment to ask questions and request feedback.
The Little TEGO Mobile App
Smart phones have become part of
our everyday lives. From banking
to online shopping, mobile devices are our direct link to
the world. Motivated by
the ease of use consumers experience with
mobile integration, The
Little TEGO, a mobile
app version of the The Pocket
TEGO, was recently introduced with
functionality and convenience at the forefront of its agenda.
Brochures
Featuring a fully integrated set-up of the printed version’s tools, this
platform brings another form of media into the laboratory. Since
turning pages or logging on to a computer isn’t always convenient
in a lab setting, the app contains an integrated collection of formulas which enable almost instantaneous calculation of important parameters and data, i.e. pigment volume concentration, rotational
speed conversion, amount of curing agent required and much more.
“The Little TEGO” is now available as a free app in the iTunes Store
and Android Market (QR image attached).

For many years, we’ve been training customers in the use of our
TEGO products, primarily through personal contact. However, it is
often the case that the daily routine doesn’t allow for attendance at
our technical trainings and seminars. These new web-based seminars offer our customers live and flexible information transfer and
training on our newest products. On our website, www.tego.us, the
customers will find a web seminar area where an initial overview of
our online trainings is available.
asktego@evonik.com
In addition to the communication tools previously highlighted, we
also have a wide selection of brochures covering our product ranges
such as nanoresins and some market segments such as plastic coatings. We publish quarterly updates on the ‘what’s new’ with TEGO
in the form of the TEGOtalk, and we maintain a constantly updated
website which houses print-friendly versions of all these works. It is
clear to see that improving the performance of coatings isn’t our
sole focus. Our aim is that customers not only receive the very best
technical solution from TEGO, but that they find the search for that
perfect product as simple as possible.

One possible way to increase business is to
take a successful product or technology and
leverage it in to a new application or market.
When successful, this type of strategy provides
unique opportunities for the supplier and the
customer alike. The customer has the advantage of adapting existing technology without a
long learning curve, and both business partners
benefit from the creation of additional value for
their respective companies as well as for the
end user.
TEGO® Twin 4100
New Multifunctional Additive Tackles
Difficult Substrate Wetting,
Defoaming and Compatibility Issues
The new TEGO® Twin 4100 further extends siloxane additive technology to provide waterborne coating formulators with excellent wetting on difficult substrates, such as metal, wood and plastics. It also provides excellent defoaming
and compatibility with sensitive resin systems. TEGO Twin® 4100 also demonstrates superior anti-cratering performance due to the multifunctional additives’
extraordinary surface tension reduction.
This is one of the potential advantages we had
in mind with the creation of TEGO® Twin 4100.
This multifunctional additive is based on our
expertise in providing novel solutions designed
to fulfill multiple technical requirements. This
is simply another way for formulators familiar
with our technology platforms to confidently
develop new offerings for their markets while
being assured of Tego’s ability to deliver innovative, quality products in a timely manner.
We are also striving to take innovation beyond
the laboratory and integrate it in to every aspect of our business culture. One of our more
recent customer service innovations is to simplify your ability to contact us directly by providing more memorable contact details.

TEGO® T WIN
TEGO® Twin 4100 is developed based on
a polysiloxane with organic modifications
TEGO® Twin 4100 also presents economical
advantages for the formulator
This technology is characterized by multiple symmetrical hydrophobic and polar groups separated by a spacer. At concentration levels
of 0.5 % in formulation, TEGO® Twin 4100 exhibits better than 7 %
improvement in surface tension reduction compared with either
Twin 4000, or a conventional siloxane, and approaching 28 % improvement compared with a typical organic surfactant. The TEGO®
Twin 4100 provides good deaeration in waterborne formulations,
significantly improves wetting – even on contaminated metal surfaces–and decreases foam. The additive offers formulators excellent
flow and leveling, good overspray acceptance and displays longterm stability and persistence in the final formulation. TEGO® Twin
4100 presents an excellent environmental profile, is 100 % active,
solvent-free, and APE-free.
Because it possesses such high active matter content and is easily incorporated at low addition levels, it allows the formulator to reduce
the total additive content of the formulation which provides potential cost savings. TEGO® Twin 4100 performs the functions of two
additives in one structure by providing excellent wetting while
maintaining a defoaming effect, allowing the potential for a single
additive to replace a defoamer, wetting agent, and any additional
surface control modifiers.
Evonik recommends the addition of TEGO® Twin 4100 and evaluation of wetting, flow and foaming behavior before considering the
addition of any other flow agent or defoamer. Begin with low addition levels to maximize the efficiency of your formulation.
