Annual report - College Success Foundation
2013 Report to the Community 2012-2013 College Success Foundation We provide the unique integrated system of supports and scholarships to inspire underserved, low-income students to finish high school, graduate from college and succeed in life. What a team! CSF Scholars like Dajir (DJ) Jigre of Kent, Washington, (on left) and his CSF colleague Jose Francisco Navarro (Franco) lead and succeed on campus. DJ and Franco are familiar faces to many on Eastern Washington University’s (EWU) campus. Together they were elected campus leaders for the 2013-2014 school year at EWU—Franco as ASB President and DJ as ASB Vice President. DJ is a CSF Achievers Scholar and Franco is a CSF Realize the Dream Scholar. Showing great promise, these two CSF Scholars are leaders with bright futures. The numbers presented in this report come from a variety of internal data sources managed by CSF’s Research and Evaluation Department. In cases where numbers are managed in a formal data system (e.g.- financials; graduation rates), exact figures are presented. In cases where numbers are not managed in a formal data system (e.g.- program service numbers), rounded estimates based on internal tracking are presented. Thank you for your support of the College Success Foundation (CSF) over the past 13 years. During the 2012 academic year, we surpassed the 3,000 mark in four-year college graduates. The following outcomes, which include both Washington state and Washington, D.C., were reached by the end of the 2012 year. 11,308 Cumulative CSF Scholarships Awarded 3,028 Cumulative Bachelor’s Degrees 2013 is a year of change for us. Our co-founders—Bob Craves and Ann Ramsay-Jenkins—are retiring from the day-to-day operations of the College Success Foundation while still remaining on our Board of Directors. We owe them tremendous thanks for their vision, unwavering support and compassion over the years. They have been CSF’s strongest advocates to whom we owe its very existence. We are welcoming a new CEO—Yolanda L. Watson Spiva, Ph.D.—to lead us on the next leg of our journey. We look forward to many productive, successful years ahead. Thank you again for your continued involvement. $159,994,022 Cumulative Scholarship Dollars Disbursed Scan for more detailed results. Two people, one dream Bob Craves and Ann Ramsay-Jenkins believed in the same thing—that a public-private partnership could help thousands of low-income, underserved young men and women go to college, earn a bachelor’s degree and find a brighter future. Now after 13 years, they have done just that. Bob and Ann’s grassroots dream has grown into one foundation that has granted more than 11,000 scholarships and disbursed nearly $160 million. Bob and Ann’s journey began when they served on Governor Gary Locke’s 2020 Commission on the Future of Post-Secondary Education. “Probably the most startling statistic at the time, outside of the fact that less than 10 percent of low-income students earned any type of post-secondary degree, was that over one-third of children in our state were living in poverty,” recalls Bob. For Bob and Ann—the students are their greatest pride. “I have always contended that the students do all the work”, says Bob. “We at CSF help them prepare for and afford a higher education but when they arrive at college, it is all up to them.” “Lots of people create ideas to provide outstanding community service, but seldom does the visionary have the tools and dedication to make the idea work. Bob not only had the vision—but additionally the skill to make the dream come true,” says Jim Sinegal, former Costco CEO. “Our students have met the challenges of college and succeeded,” says Ann. “We now have thousands of graduates who are contributors to our society in education, law, medicine and social services.” 2 Ann’s commitment to the students has been her driving force. “Ann is passionate about doing good,” says William H. Gates Sr. Both Bob and Ann remain on the Board of Directors. College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community New leader, bright future College access is a passion for Yolanda L. Watson Spiva, Ph.D., who became College Success Foundation president and CEO in September 2013, succeeding retiring CEO Bob Craves. Yolanda has had a rising educational and professional career; she most recently served as the CEO/executive director of Project GRAD Atlanta Inc., a nonprofit with the mission to collaborate with the Atlanta Public Schools in order to increase the number of students graduating from high school and college. The Board of Directors unanimously selected Dr. Spiva based on her record of leading and fundraising for nonprofits in the field of education, her understanding of public/private partnerships, her national experience and her strong executive and personal qualities. “We believe we have selected a leader who will build on what the College Success Foundation is and has accomplished,” says CSF Board Chair Joe Gaffney. Yolanda’s 20-year career spans a range of leadership, general management, public affairs, operations and academic officer positions. “Yolanda will bring her passion, leadership and vision to the CSF mission, and we look forward to the value she will add to take the work to the next level of excellence,” says board member Tricia Raikes. “The work of college readiness, access and success is about providing hope, realizing aspirations and fulfilling the ‘American Dream’ for students who perceive or have been told that college is not in their futures. My goal as CSF president and CEO is to debunk those myths and help our students become college graduates with a focus on ‘paying it forward.’” Yolanda earned her undergraduate degree in economics from Spelman College, her master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. degree in higher education from Georgia State University. College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community 3 proven model of success = supports + scholarships The College Success Foundation has a proven model of success to inspire underserved, low-income students to finish high school and provides the unique integrated system of supports and scholarships they need to graduate from college and succeed in life. Our approach is to intervene early, providing students and parents with the inspiration, incentives, mentoring and financial supports they need to make a college degree possible. CSF focuses on districts with high percentages of low-income populations and where both school district and local community are involved and committed to working with CSF as partners with a laser focus on improving high school graduation rates and post-secondary completion. 4 College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community DC transforms lives Tacoma unlocks students’ potential Yasmine Arrington’s achievements have been extraordinary, which is one reason the College Success Foundation - DC named her a Leadership 1000 Scholar. Natalie Hart always knew she would pursue higher education. Yasmine is founder and executive director of ScholarCHIPS, a non-profit organization established her junior year of high school to create a support network for a demographic she knows well. “My mother pushed her children to go to college,” Natalie said. Her father did not graduate from high school and her mother turned down a scholarship to help support her grandparents. “I am a child of an incarcerated parent,” Yasmine says. “When I received a scholarship from the College Success Foundation, it was one of the best things that happened to me.” Natalie found her way to college even though no one blazed the trail ahead. She was selected for the CSF Achievers Scholarship during her junior year at Foss High School in Tacoma, Washington. Later she was also named a Costco Scholar. Yasmine, who also lost her mother, transforms her experiences—whether challenges or opportunities—into a chance to make an impact for others. That’s what ScholarCHIPS is all about— support and inspiration for children of incarcerated parents to attend college. “The scholarship made it clear that college could be a reality; somebody was willing to invest in my success,” Natalie said. Today Natalie is a 2011 graduate of the University of Washington with two bachelor’s degrees and is an admissions advisor/recruiter for UW Tacoma. She plans to pursue her master’s degree in business administration. A junior at Elon University, she double majors in strategic communications and history with a minor in human services. And where will her degree take her? She’s still weighing the options. Law or divinity school? A master’s in nonprofit management? Or maybe run ScholarCHIPS fulltime and try to land a radio or TV job to bring more attention to her cause. Natalie is driven to give back to her community. She serves on CSF’s Alumni Board and was honored as a Seafair Princess in the 2013 Scholarship Program for Women, championing CSF’s Hometown Mentor Program. “I don’t know in which order this all will unfold,” she says. “But I am excited to go through the journey.” Scan for DC video. “I think one of the greatest things you can do for your community is to uplift others who don’t know how to get where you are,” Natalie said. College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community 5 supports middle school 4,000 Early College Readiness CSF offers early career and college awareness beginning in seventh grade. CSF places AmeriCorps college and career coaches in each of our middle schools. Students learn to plan for high school and college, explore possible career options and take college-and career-ready academic courses in preparation. CSF also works with its partners to ensure lowincome seventh and eighth grade students sign up for early scholarship commitments through the Washington College Bound Scholarship. middle school students CSF served approximately 4,000 middle school students in Washington 123,665 College Bound sign-ups CSF helped sign up 123,665 students in Washington state for College Bound by December 2012. This included 79% of eligible eighth graders (high school graduating class of 2016). 6 College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community state in the 2012-2013 school year through the college and career readiness program. 845 high school HERO students HERO engaged 505 students in 2011-2012 in four high schools and feeder middle schools in metropolitan Seattle, Tacoma and Yakima. Another 340 were served in two high schools and feeder middle schools in Washington, D.C. 1,451 College Advising and Mentoring As students move from middle to high school, they are supported in the ninth through tenth grades by the HERO program (Higher Education Readiness Opportunity). HERO advisors encourage students to study hard, graduate from high school, and prepare for and complete college. HERO hosts Saturday institutes on college campuses to acquaint students with college and career workshops on topics such as STEM, business and entrepreneurship. High School Juniors and Seniors: CSF college preparatory advisors work closely with students in their junior and senior years in high school in the CSF Achievers program. Here students receive proactive academic advising, college planning information, grade monitoring and referrals for additional interventions. CSF recruits hometown mentors for Achievers to help them with their college planning and act as adult role models. As seniors, advisors assist the students with financial aid planning. Achievers CSF supported 1,451 Achievers in high school in 2011-2012— 901 in Washington state and 550 in D.C. College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community 7 supports 377 colleges and universities CSF Scholars from both CSF and CSF - DC attended college in nearly every state—377 colleges and universities combined. 67 percent Achievers Sixty-seven percent of CSF Achievers who initially enroll at a four-year college graduate within six years. 8 College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community college Scholarships and Mentoring When students are ready to go to college, our goals are to remove financial barriers to help them afford the high costs of attendance. Once settled on campus, our goal is to be sure they stay and graduate. Advising, mentoring and academic supports continue as students transition into college. Through agreements with CSF, partner colleges designate a faculty/staff member from their campuses to coordinate/offer mentoring services to CSF Scholars. Often upper division CSF Scholars serve as peer mentors to first-year and sophomore students. alumni and career Transitions to Career and Post-College Life The CSF Alumni Program and our Center for Career Success help scholars prepare for the transition into the professional world and encourage alumni to give back to the communities where they were raised, often helping younger students navigate the college-planning process. Services include workshops, lectures and networking opportunities to develop relationships and prepare for graduate education. Through the Center for Career Success CSF collaborates with companies that promote job and internship opportunities and CSF Scholars and Alumni are encouraged to apply. 26 percent alumni Approximately 26 percent of alumni are currently enrolled in or have completed a graduate or professional certificate program. 3,028 bachelor’s degrees By 2012 yearend, 3,028 bachelor’s degrees were awarded to CSF Scholars. College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community College Bound Scholarship The College Bound Scholarship is a state-funded scholarship designed to motivate seventh and eighth grade students to pursue a college education. It is a four-year scholarship that covers the cost of tuition, fees and books not covered by other state aid. The amount of the scholarship is based on tuition rates at Washington public colleges and universities. CSF, in partnership with the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC), actively works with districts, schools and community-based organizations to support College Bound students and families statewide. The first class of College Bound Scholars entered college in 2012, attending technical colleges, community colleges and four-year public and independent universities. Courage Ameen Tabatabai seems like your typical college student. He loves basketball, Xbox and his mom’s home cooking. But his life has been anything but typical since Ameen was diagnosed with a disease of the liver at the age of 10. Though determined to live a normal life, Ameen was restricted by health concerns. He graduated from high school with honors, enrolling at the University of Washington. After only one month, he was forced to make the most difficult decision of his life—to leave college to focus on his health. “I knew I would come back. It was never whether I would but when.” Washington State Opportunity Scholarship In 2012 the College Success Foundation was named program administrator for a new Washington state scholarship program—Washington State Opportunity Scholarship (WSOS). WSOS specifically supports low- and middle-income students pursuing eligible high-demand majors in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and health care. It was created by the Legislature to invest in Washington students to help them take advantage of high-demand job opportunities created by local employers. WSOS cultivates homegrown talent and contributes to a thriving state economy for all Washingtonians. Businesses and the state have created a unique public-private partnership to grow “STEM” talent in the state. Major contributors are Boeing and Microsoft. WSOS is committed to keeping a base of 3,000 scholars in college at any one time. Award amounts are $1,000 for each of the first two years and increase to $5,000 each year for upperclassmen who continue in a high-demand, eligible major. 3,045 selected as inaugural class of WSOS Scholars. 981 health care majors 838 science majors 730 engineering majors 340 technology majors 156 math majors Two months later, Ameen received a new liver and began his long and challenging recovery. Facing significant financial hardship following his surgery, Ameen turned to scholarships and loans to achieve his goal of returning to school. “The Washington State Opportunity Scholarship was a huge help and enabled me to study something so personal to me,” said Ameen, now a junior at UW, studying biomedical engineering. “I hope to show other young people that obstacles between them and a college degree, physical or financial, are surmountable. They can do it. Take the courage and go after it.” In June 2013, Ameen completed his third halfmarathon since his transplant. 11 Scan for WSOS video. College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community scholarships 12 Costco Scholarship Leadership 1000 Scholarship The Costco Scholarship Fund is a long-standing scholarship program that brings the business community and individuals together at an annual fundraising breakfast to help underrepresented students of color at the University of Washington and Seattle University. The Leadership 1000 Scholarship is a scholarship program funded by individuals, foundations or businesses and provides college scholarships to deserving students who need assistance attending an eligible four-year college or university in Washington state. Costco Wholesale has been a strong advocate for higher education, providing scholarship funding for underrepresented students and supporting the CSF mission to inspire low-income, underserved students to finish high school, graduate from college and succeed in life. What makes a Leadership 1000 Scholarship different is that it can be customized around a general set of requirements requested by the donor. Scholarships awarded range from $2,500 to $5,000— some scholarships are for one year only while others are renewable for up to three more years. Many of our donors choose to foster a mentor-mentee relationship with their students and keep in touch for years after graduation. In addition to our work together in Washington state, Costco also collaborates with CSF – DC on a Costco fundraiser to help underrepresented students in southeast Washington, D.C. Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth Fifty foster youth were awarded the Washington State Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth in May 2013, continuing an annual tradition that helps young men and women from foster care further their education and earn a college degree. Scholarship awards range from $2,000 to $4,000, depending on the college of attendance, and can be accessed for up to five years. Funded annually by the Governors’ Cup Golf Tournament, held each September, the scholarship was founded by former Governor Gary Locke. Governor Jay Inslee continues to support it, along with all former governors. College Success Foundation 2013 Report to the Community O Wines Opportunity for Success Scholarship Our first national scholarship was launched in the spring of 2013—O Wines Opportunity for Success Scholarship, which helps low-income, capable young women achieve their greatest potential through education. During its first four years in Washington state from 2007 to 2012, O Wines granted more than $125,000 in scholarship awards of $500 or more. After it was acquired by Ste. Michelle Wine Estates in 2012, it expanded its reach and the first eight national scholarships were awarded in May 2013. Each Opportunity for Success Scholarship is $20,000 and is awarded in $5,000 increments annually over four years. Chateau Ste.
