Here in Yarmouth and Digby Counties we
have a very inclusive municipal composting
program.
All
of your organic
waste, including
food and nonrecyclable paper
(such as soiled
napkins, pizza
boxes,
paper
take-out food
bags), can go
into your green
cart and put out
curbside for collection.
However, backyard composting is also a
great way to divert waste. Please note that
most backyard composting systems are not
ideal for meat and bones, oils and fats, and
dairy products, so you will still need your
green cart for those types of food scraps.
There are different styles and methods for
backyard composting, but the general idea
is to put acceptable food scraps in a designated container outside and provide the
proper conditions to allow it to turn into
nutrient-rich compost for use in gardens
and flowerbeds.
First, you will need a compost bin. There
are bins for sale at stores but there are also
many variations and do-it-yourself designs
available online. Bins will need to allow for
some air exchange so the microorganisms
can get oxygen to break down the food
waste. Choose a partially shaded spot in
your yard for the bin that will allow for
good water drainage.
When adding food to your compost
bin, try to alternate layers of nitrogenrich greens (such as: rotting fruit, veggie
peelings, coffee grounds, tea leaves) and
carbon-rich browns (such as: dry leaves
and grass, non-toxic compostable paper
like newsprint or non-bleached paper napkins). Be sure to stir/mix up your compost
pile often to allow for more even decomposition.
Compost should be ready to use on gardens within a few months, depending on
the conditions. If you run into trouble with

Spring is on its way

Winter has been harsh and cruel this year,
but spring is slowly advancing, causing it to
lose its icy grip. In early April, as I sit on the
west veranda of my Gavelton farmhouse, the
sun’s intensity is causing the snow
to slowly disappear, revealing
more patches of green in the
fields nearby.
The northwest wind is
invigorating, the sky a pale
blue. Bird song is everywhere.
The robin population is increasing daily and I am seeing many
new arrivals. The chickadees have
been singing their spring song for
some time now. The soulful notes
of the mourning doves forever re-
mind me of the background sound in the TV
Miniseries,w
At one point in this glorious day I looked
skyward to see two immature bald eagles soaring on the thermals—a symbol of freedom to
me. I couldn’t help but think that the ravages
of this winter must have been hard on them.
The heavy snow cover has been difficult for
birds of prey and animals alike. Even now it
is difficult for spring birds to find food and
nesting material.
In the garden I see the dainty
heads of the snowdrops have pushed
through the snow. Hopefully soon
the weather will warm up, the
tree swallows will arrive to find
plenty of insects, and spring will
carry on as it has for generations before.

Five tips for attracting butterflies to your garden
Butterflies add color, movement and whimsy to any landscape and are therefore welcome
guests in most gardens. In the Midwest, some
of the more common varieties include monarchs, swallowtails, spring azures and fritillaries. Learn how to attract — and keep close —
these winged beauties by following these smart
tips.
1. Don’t forget the caterpillars. Maintain a
out
steady population of butterflies through
the summer and fall by ensuring that their offspring has enough to eat. Milkweed is the mo
narch caterpillar’s snack of choice, while black
swallowtail larvae love to feast on herbs such as
parsley and fennel.
2. Keep your garden insecticide-free. To
avoid killing the insects that you are trying to
attract, use gentler alternatives to insecticides
to keep nuisances at bay. Ladybugs are a great
choice, as they are harmless to plants but get
rid of aphids.
3. Favor bright colors. Butterflies are es
pecially attracted to yellow, pink and orange
flowers, so plan your color scheme accordingly.
Flowers with short, tubular heads or flattened
heads are your best bet.
4. Plant native perennials. Zinnias produce sweet nectar that butterflies love,
all summer long; they are also native
to the Midwest. Purple cornflowers are another
good choice, and they keep blooming well into
the fall.
5. Set up some drinking and resting
spaces. Use flat rocks to give your butterflies a spot to spread their wings and take
in some sun. You could also place a shallow water dish with a layer of sand at the
bottom so your new guests can quench their
thirst.

Scarlett and Vivian’s grandmother over 30 years ago, so
Viv is delighted to take the job. When Scarlett goes to Ariana’s
office to consult about the restoration cost, she finds her outside, standing over her boss’s dead body. Though Ariana claims
to know nothing about his demise, the investigation unveils a
motive for murder. Now, with the bride-to-be in custody and
the wedding on hold, Scarlett and Viv must find the real killer
before Ariana’s future is boxed up for good.

sauces. Among the locals vying for
the grand prize are Becca Dapkins and
Maybelle Humphries. The women have
been archenemies ever since Buzz Oliver dumped Maybelle after a 13-year courtship and started seeing Becca. When Becca’s
body is found near one of the festival booths, bludgeoned by
a brisket, Maybelle becomes one of Chief Wyatt McBride’s top
suspects. Determined to help clear her friend’s name, Piper begins her own investigation, much to McBride’s consternation.

Having a hard time finding the time to fit in
a workout because you have so much housework? Surprisingly housework and yard work
can be a good workout and burn as many as
400 calories each week – which may translate
to a weight loss of 6 lbs a year.
For reference: an average 150 lb person,
burns about 1 calorie per minute while sitting
and watching TV or 30 calories per 30 minutes.
If that same person scrubs the bathtub and
bathroom floor, you could burn up to whopping 300 calories in 30 minutes.
Washing windows – may burn approximately 160 calories in 30 minutes.
Evening dusting can burn 50 calories.
If you add a few lunges or squats to your
housework workout, you can burn even more
calories and tone and strengthen your legs and
core muscles.
While vacuuming or mopping the floor
you can burn 120 calories in 30 minutes, but
try adding a lunge forward with each forward
movement and you can boost that calories
burn.
While dusting, stand on your toes or try

Children’s Wish Foundation Purses for Wishes
The second annual “Purses for Wishes” fundraiser
will take place on May 2 at 2 pm at the Comfort
Inn, Yarmouth. We are now collecting gently used
purses and scarves. These can be dropped off at 369
Pleasant St. and after April 1, at the Comfort Inn.
This event was a huge success last year and lots of
fun was had by all that attended. We are hoping to
see lots of familiar faces as well as new ones this
year. It is time for new spring purses and scarves
so drop off your old ones and come out to replace
them, and help grant a wish while having a unique

The Great Roof Rescue

church that is steeped in African-Canadian history has been closed for a year because of roof

potluck lunch and a concert will be held Saturday, April 25 at the Weymouth Legion from noon
until 2 pm. The event features the Victory Singers, a silent auction and bake table and a free will
offering.

The first Annual “Spring Tea” fundraiser will take
