The ship must enter drydock to replace the bearing and it is expected to return to its scheduled sailings on December 17. Millennium is fitted with two 19.5 MW Mermaid podded propulsion units. This is Celebrity's third cruise cancellation this year because of pod related problems and the 14th since its first Mermaid-equipped vessel was introduced Guests booked on the cancelled sailing will receive a full refund and a free Celebrity cruise of equal value from North America of up to seven nights, departing on or before December 31, 2007, excluding holiday and Celebrity Xpedition sailings. Travel agents will receive full commissions for the cancelled sailing, plus a $50 rebooking fee per stateroom when their clients reschedule their cruise. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 2 11/19/2006 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 236 "I sincerely apologize to our guests for the disruption this cancelled cruise will cause them," said Dan Hanrahan, president of Celebrity Cruises. "We will do everything we can to assist them onboard other sailings. Millennium continues to operate safely, however, this is a matter that can only be addressed through repairs in a drydock." Celebrity has established a special help desk to assist guests and travel agents with rebooking, air transportation, land tours and other issues. The cancelled cruise is expected to have a negative impact on the earnings of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. of approximately $.02 per share. PAKJESBOOT 12 ARRIVED IN MIDDELBURG Another Sinterklaas arrived in Holland, this time the PAKJESBOOT 12 seen arriving in the port of Middelburg Photo : Wim Kosten © Tweede KNRM Benefietgala overweldigend succes Op initiatief van het Palace Hotel in Noordwijk aan Zee vond afgelopen vrijdag het tweede KNRM Benefietgala plaats. The spokesman said the last missing sailor was found dead early Friday. The schooner "Yoshi maru-31", owned by a Kuril-based Russian company, sank Thursday 6 kilometers (about 3.5 nautical miles) off Kunashir Island when a sudden storm broke out, according to a preliminary investigation. Prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the accident under the article "Violation of safe sailing rules and water transport use that entails death through negligence." I made several trips for Star on both services and have a long time experience on the north Pacific. On a transpacific run from Vancouver to Sendai Japan I sailed from Vancouver on the 6h of November 1994 with the Star Lorraine a 45.000 tons DW geared conbulker with a draft of 11 mtrs and loaded with wood pulp timber and large ingots of aluminum. On the 9th of November we encountered near hurricane conditions in the same area as the Westwood Ponoma. We were hove to, winds estimated NNW 11 Beaufort with higher gusts, Seas exceptional high and breaking. At two in the morning we saw a huge sea that came in abeam and was considerable higher than the average height. It washed over the forward part of the vessel and although the top of the hatch coaming was about 8 meters above sea level the deck cargo of timber on number one hatch cover was shifted against heavy construction on deck, container stools and beams which brook loose and considerable damage was sustained Due to our draft we could not enter Goos Bay as the Westwood Ponoma did, instead we had to proceed to San Francisco. Later we tried to calculate the actual wave height on the 9th of November and being very conservative we came to 25 meters and the freak wave must have been about 30 meters. For these wave heights the conditions were very favorable. Such as duration of high winds from the same direction and a long stretch of water over which the wind blows, in this case from the Aleuts Islands to the Mexican border. Before satellites could measure wave heights reports from mariners of exceptional high waves were not taken serious. Many thanks Bauke for your article and that you shared this experience with the other readers !!! The man was travelling on the Isle of Innishmore ferry from Rosslare in Ireland to Pembroke Dock in Wales when he fell into the sea at Milford Haven estuary at around 12.40am this morning. The Angle Lifeboat and a rescue helicopter from RAF Chivenor were launched to carry out a search of the immediate area. Shortly after 2.30am, the man was spotted in water near the Texaco Oil Refinery Jetty, which is between 100-200 yards offshore. He was taken by the rescue helicopter to Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, but was pronounced dead on arrival. The Pembrokeshire coroner has been informed and Dyfed-Powys Police are trying to notify next-of-kin of the death. A spokesman for the force said: "From initial inquiries there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of this person, however inquiries are continuing." The Arleigh Burke-class McCampbell, currently based at San Diego, is scheduled to arrive at Yokosuka in June. After a turn-over of duties, the Gary will return to the United States, the Navy said. The change is part of the Navy’s long-range plan to replace older ships in its forward-deployed forces with newer, more capable surface combat ships. New navy ship off the docks The first of seven new navy patrol ships - has been launched in Melbourne's dockyards where it will be fitted out for delivery. The launch is part of the New Zealand Defence Force's plan to double the fleet, and at $500 million, the Navy says it is a bargain. "Around the world other navies can't believe that we're getting seven brand new ships for that amount of money," says Chief of Navy Rear Admiral David Ledson. With just a lone 25mm gun and no anti-missile defence, Otago is no warship. But its hull is toughened for the ice, making it suitable for tracking illegal fishing in southern waters. Otago and its twin, Wellington, will free the Navy's two Anzac frigates from these duties, allowing the fleet to range further. Another of the new vessels, Canterbury, will replace the ailing Charles Upham as the Defence Force's troop carrier. A multi-role vessel, Canterbury will have the ability to land a company of soldiers and armour. "[We've had] East Timor, we've had the Solomons, we've had Bougainville and the tsunami relief operation up in Indonesia. This would've been absolutely ideal vessel to do that," says Ministry of Defence spokesperson Gary Collier. At nearly $200 million, the Defence Force has spent more than five times the original estimate to upgrade to Canterbury, but they say it is a far superior ship. "This is what we call a tactical sealift ship which can take equipment to the shore. The Charles Upham was only intended for strategic sealift, taking equipment from port to port or wharf to wharf," says Collier. The Navy will begin deploying its new fleet next year. Net income increased to 23.5 billion won (S$39 million) in October, compared with 17.1 billion won a year earlier, Daewoo Shipbuilding said yesterday in Seoul. Sales fell 5.3 per cent to 441.9 billion won. A stronger won helps cut Daewoo Shipbuilding's foreign currency-denominated debt when converted to the local currency. The won traded at an average of 953.80 won in October, gaining 9.7 per cent from a year earlier. Rising demand for oil and vessels needed to transport fuel products are boosting orders at shipyards in South Korea, home to the world's largest. At the end of October, Daewoo Shipbuilding won contracts to build vessels and offshore projected valued at about US$10.43 billion. It has an order backlog worth US$22.55 billion. Daewoo Shipbuilding raised last month its target for new orders this year to a record US$12 billion on increased demand to produce and transport energy goods. Its operating profit dropped 34 per cent to 12.2 billion won from a year earlier ROUTE, PORTS & SERVICES THIS SECTION IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY : TOTAL VESSEL MANAGEMENT K.P. van der Mandelelaan 34 - 3062 MB Rotterdam (Brainpark) - The Netherlands Telephone : (31) 10 - 453 03 77 Fax : (31) 10 - 453 05 24 E-mail : mail@workships.nl Website : www.workships.nl PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 10 11/19/2006 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 236 Pilot David Leijzerzapf seen onboard Allseas CALAMITY JANE whilst departing from Rotterdam Photo : Frans Bausch © PORT OF SILLAMAE EXPANDING WESTWARDS SSG-TALLINN. On 14 November Estonian President Toomas-Hendrik Ilves attended the ceremony marking the first step in the construction of a new breakwater in the Port of Sillamae. The construction company Eesti Ehitus will build a 1,172 metre long breakwater and 610 metre long quay with a water depth of 10-14 metres for Baltic Chemical Terminal (BCT). This part of the port will be completed in December, 2007. The planned capacity for BCT is one million tons of ammoniac and 500,000 tons of liquid fertilizers per year. The Estonian Maritime Administration will soon ask for tenders for the planning of a new icebreaker. It will have a beam of 28 m and will also be fitted with oil clearance and firefighting equipment. After ordering the first new icebreaker, preparations for a second unit will be made. The Estonian government has also approved an icebreaking program for 2006-2013, which includes the construction of three new multifunctional icebreakers. The Estonian Maritime Administration is responsible for assisting ships into the ports in Tallinn and Kopli bays, Muuga, Kunda, Sillamae, Paldiski and Parnu. Until the first new icebreaker has been delivered, the icebreaker Tarmo will operate in the Gulf of Finland and the EVA-316 in Parnu Bay. In order to be able to replace or supplement the current icebreakers, the Estonian Maritime Administration has signed an agreement to charter a Swedish icebreaker and ordered supplementary icebreaking in Parnu Bay from Alfons Hakans. HK container volume up 4.2% in Oct Hutchison Whampoa Ltd, PSA International and other operators at Hong Kong's sea port handled 4.2 per cent more containers in October, helped by China's rising trade. Cargo volume at Hong Kong, the world's second-busiest container port, rose to 2.13 million 20-foot boxes last month, according to preliminary figures posted on the Port Development Council's website yesterday. In the first 10 months of the year, Hong Kong's cargo volume rose 4.9 per cent to 19.7 million containers. China's exports rose 30 per cent last month, as the country sold more toys, clothes and other items overseas. The growth in exports helped boost shipments through Hong Kong's port, which mainly handles goods made elsewhere and then sent to the city for re-distribution. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 12 11/19/2006 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 236 Singapore, which overtook Hong Kong as the world's biggest container port last year, handled 2.18 million containers last month, 9.3 per cent more than a year earlier, according to the city state's port authority. It handled 20.5 million boxes in the first 10 months of the year. Growth in Hong Kong's container traffic has slowed because of competition from Shenzhen and other southern Chinese ports, which are winning customers through low prices. Trucking a 20-foot container from a factory in southern China and shipping it from Hong Kong costs US$333 more on average than moving it out of Shenzhen, according to a study commissioned by the Hong Kong government. Volumes at the Kwai Chung terminals, where more than 60 per cent of Hong Kong's sea cargo is processed, rose 16 per cent to 1.51 million boxes last month. Hutchison and PSA, the world's two largest port operators, have a venture that manages 11 berths at the terminals. They also have a separate venture with Cosco Pacific Ltd that manages two berths. CONDOR RENAMED The CONDOR is November 15th renamed in EUROPE ORION Photo : Michel Kodde © Oceania set to pump up cruise fleet The Frank Del Rio outfit has $400m in hand to buy its chartered-in trio. Frank Del Rio's Oceania Cruises has raised $400m of bank debt to fund the purchase from Cruiseinvest of its three chartered ships and position the company for an expansion of its fleet. The 30,000-gt former Renaissance vessels Regatta and Insignia (both built 1998) and Nautica (built 2000) have been acquired for a total of $375m. Oceania president and chief executive Del Rio says to progress from a start-up company in 2002 to owning its own vessels is a "tremendous achievement". UBS Securities and Lehman Brothers acted as financial advisers for the bank-debt offering. They also underwote the credit facilities with a syndicate of North American and European financial institutions. PSi-Daily Shipping News Page 13 11/19/2006 DAILY COLLECTION OF MARITIME PRESS CLIPPINGS 2006 – 236 The offering consisted of a $300m six-year term loan, a $75m seven-year term loan and a $25m five-year revolvingcredit facility. The 684-passenger ships, part of a series of eight sisters built at the former Chantiers de l'Atlantique yard in France, have been operated by Oceania under long-term lease agreements. Del Rio told TradeWinds some time ago that some had been taken at "a very favourable rate" for five years with an option to extend to 10. Cruiseinvest was the vehicle set up to handle the disposal of the Renaissance fleet after that company ceased trading following the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks in the US. Upmarket Oceania says V Ships Leisure of Monte Carlo remains as marine and technical manager, while ICS, a subsidiary of Apollo Ship Chandlers in Miami, will continue to provide hotel services. "Taking ownership of our vessels and the recently executed credit facility have perfectly positioned Oceania to enter its next phase of growth," said Del Rio. "With our enhanced financial performance and flexibility, we can focus on fleet expansion," he added. Oceania has been searching for some time to add a fourth cruiseship to its fleet. It failed in an earlier attempt to negotiate for a vessel, which would have been named Marina , for introduction in the summer of 2007. Oceania says it now employs 2,000 crew members worldwide and 165 shore-side staff. Despite berths increasing fourfold between 2003 and 2006, yields per passenger have risen 41% and occupancy levels have been close to capacity, says Oceania. As of this month, at least 72% of available capacity for 2007 and 30% for 2008 has already been booked. Oceania was set up by Del Rio, a former co-chief executive of Renaissance, and current company chairman Joe Watters, previously a president of Princess Cruises, Royal Viking Line and Crystal Cruises. Stena expects to lose out in the bidding for Scandlines. Stena submitted an offer in excess of SEK 5 billion at the beginning of the summer, but according to Communications Director Joakim Kenndal, Scandlines will probably not go to Stena. "We haven´t heard anything officially yet since the process is still ongoing, but our assessment is that we are not in the running to take over Scandlines. A great pity as Stena would have been a very good owner", he said to SSG following Swedish newspaper reports on Tuesday that Stena Line risks losing the bidding. Stena Line believes that the final purchase sum will be somewhere between SEK 10 billion and SEK 15 billion, but the company is unwilling to officially disclose its own offer. Scandlines is owned by the German railway company Deutsche Bahn and the Danish Ministry of Transport. The ordnance was a BDU-33, a 25-pound, nonexplosive training munition made of concrete. Base officials believe the device fell into the Pacific Ocean. Brig. Gen. Sam Angelella, 35th Fighter Wing and base commander, said initially the practice munition wouldn’t release during a training run over Draughon Range. The pilot then tried to drop it over the water but it again wouldn’t come off. He then planned on bringing it home but when he landed, the training munition was gone. After reviewing video footage from the aircraft, it was determined the device dropped about 10 miles out to sea in an area away from any boats or fishermen, Angelella said. “We’ll do a safety investigation and figure out what happened,” he said.
