The New Member Reception, scheduled for
5:30 p.m., Thursday, April 18, is a must-attend. This
year, considering the many new members who’ve
come on board, the evening promises to be especially enjoyable. All members – from the newest to

and complimentary hors d’oeuvres. I know that many of you

Meet New Members
Christopher Blake is a partner at Hahn Loeser &
Parks. He is on the board of the Cleveland Council
on World Affairs and is vice president of strategic planning for the Cleveland International Film
Festival. Laura is a travel writer and photographer.
They enjoy independent films and traveling off the
beaten path. Chris is training for his third marathon,
and Laura plays volleyball.
Richard Giesen Jr. is managing partner and chief
investment officer of Elessar Investment Management. Lynn owns the Source, a fine-furnishings
consignment retailer in Chagrin Falls. Parents of
three young adults, Rick and Lynn are enjoying life
as empty nesters. They live in Chagrin Falls.
Nicole Gray is a member of McDonald Hopkins.
She is on the boards of the Junior League of Cleveland and the MacDonald Women’s Hospital Health
Leadership Council. She and Curtis, the director
of operations for HHA Services, have two children.
They enjoy skiing, travel, Cleveland restaurants,
and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Thomas Graham, M.D., is the chief innovation officer and vice chair of orthopaedic surgery at Cleveland Clinic. He and CeCe, his wife and childhood
sweetheart, have two daughters. Tom is a golfer and
enjoys fishing and sporting clays. He is a trustee of
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
Jonathan Groza is an associate attorney with Ice
Miller. Susan is a medical sales account consultant
with Kimberly Clark Healthcare. They live in Rocky
River with their young son and their black lab, Otto.
They enjoy running, traveling, taking Otto to the
beach, and eating in Cleveland’s fine restaurants.
Philip Manning is professor and chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminology at Cleveland
State University. His recent research concerns new
forms of password protection for smartphones,
computers, and other devices. His wife, Maria
Hatzoglou, is a professor of molecular nutrition at
Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine
and an expert on stress. They have two children.

Joe Marinucci is president and CEO of the Downtown Cleveland Alliance. He was born in Italy and
immigrated to Cleveland’s Little Italy neighborhood
in 1956. He and Dani, an accomplished painter, live
in Westlake, where they raised their four children.
Joe and Dani enjoy travel and love to explore the
neighborhoods of the cities they visit.
Michael Perlmuter is president of Alex N. Sill Company. He and Shari live in Pepper Pike and have two
children, one at Skidmore College and the other at
George Washington University. Michael is the former
president of Oakwood Country Club. He and Shari
are active on many charitable boards.
Anne Shaughnessy is a senior business analyst with
Rosetta and a downtown Cleveland resident. She
mentors a high school student through Minds Matter of Cleveland and serves on Urban Squash Cleveland’s auxiliary board and the Vocational Guidance
Services’ Sunbeam board. Anne is a veteran lacrosse
player and recently discovered paddle tennis.
Elisabeth Sherman is chief development officer
for the Northeast Ohio region of the American
Red Cross. Bradley is an attorney and shareholder
at Littler Mendelson. Both are involved with the
Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland,
Camp Wise, Montefiore Housing Corporation,
and Cleveland Hillel. They live in Pepper Pike with
their twin daughters.
James Smith is president of Western Reserve
Systems. He and Becky live in Aurora with their five
school-age children – three girls and two boys. Jim
serves on the board of the Epilepsy Association.
He enjoys golf, hiking, working out, and family time.
Chris Snider is a certified exit planning advisor and
the founder and president of the Northeast Ohio
chapter of the Exit Planning Institute. Denice is a
manager at Kohl’s Southpark. They are the parents
of two young adults, both of whom are actively
involved in the Cleveland community.

President to Address
First Speaker Luncheon
Sandra Pianalto, president and chief executive officer of the
Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, will share personal and
professional insights at the Senior Committee’s first Speaker
Luncheon at noon on Friday, April 19. “Considering the
economic challenges facing our nation, this promises to be a
very relevant presentation,” said Bruce Akers, Senior Committee
chair. “Last fall, we surveyed the club’s senior members about
programming options, and the clear first choice was a luncheon
series addressing issues of current importance. We are hoping
for a huge turnout.”

includes time for conversation, a buffetstyle breakfast, a 40-minute presentation,
and what Wenger calls a lively questionand-answer session. Speakers represent
a range of backgrounds, including
business, nonprofit, and academic. “Every
presentation is different, and that’s part
of the beauty,” said Wenger.
Speakers are free to select the topic
they want to address. “It could be leadership in their organization, personal
successes, things that have helped them,
or lessons learned,” Wenger explained.

“Some speakers are nearing the ends of
their careers and are in the mode of giving
back. Others are in the process of launching or overseeing major initiatives. Some
presentations are all business; others are
quite personal. What’s especially humbling
is when speakers talk about things they
wish they had done differently.”
Thanks to its growing popularity,
Breakfast With Leaders extends this year
through June – a first in the series’ fiveyear history. To preserve the intimacy that
distinguishes it from forum-type series,
Breakfast With Leaders is open to members
only. “It is an honor to connect members
with community leaders through a unique
program that adds real value to the club,”
said Wenger.
Prepare for the golf season by participating in the return of YoGolf with Debi
Darnell, 7 to 8:15 a.m. every Thursday,
April 11 through May 9. This golf-specific yoga series will become progressively more challenging, so you will
want to attend every class to gain the full
benefit. April 10 is the last day to register.
A minimum of three pre-registered participants is required. $100 for the series.

Dear Fellow Members,
The Power of 140 membership challenge, which extends until July, is already
an important success. In just a few months,
the Power of 140 program has resulted in
128 new members. I am very pleased with
the outstanding quality of our new members and the broad engagement of current
members in identifying and proposing
new members. I firmly believe that the
success of this program greatly enriches
the life of the club.
Our membership is the Union Club’s
greatest asset, and it is important that new
members feel engaged. I trust that you will
take advantage of every opportunity to
become acquainted with them and extend
a warm welcome.
Beyond the success of the Power of
140 initiative, the fiscal year that ends this
month has been very good for your club.
We will show a solid operating profit that
will be reinvested over the next year in
a range of capital improvements to our
fine facility. Just as important, the club
hosted a rich array of informative –
and fun – programs. To name only
one example, I write this the day after
another wonderful Summit on Leadership, which was organized and carried
out by younger members. This time
the topic was “Celebrating Cleveland:
A Culinary Cornerstone.” The panel was
fascinating; the ballroom was overflowing; the food was delicious; and spirits
were high. This is a special time to be
part of the Union Club!

two-page article, she describes her position as Eaton’s business development and
strategy manager, her connections to her
native China, the home she and Robert

although Maschke thrives in each of these roles individually,
she insists that success requires achieving harmony in all
aspects of life. “i like the saying, ‘Success is an extension of
happiness,’” the native of China says with only a trace of an
accent. “i am fulfilled in my professional life and my personal
life, so i am happy, and so by that, i’m successful.”
through the course of a dozen years at eaton, Maschke
has enjoyed her professional development, beginning as
the asian sourcing program manager. advanced degrees
in international relations, supply-chain management, and
finance coupled with fluency in Chinese (Mandarin) and
english have served her well.

for Proposal
“All the ladies at the table received roses,
but Barbara Joan also got a ring,” said
Gordon Greene, describing the scene
when, at this year’s Valentine’s Day
dinner, he proposed to Barbara Joan
Addis Looman. Greene and Looman
were seated with six friends at a table in
the Dining Room when he popped the
question. “Each of the other couples is
married, and all of the wives had tears
of joy in their eyes. Barbara Joan had the
most beautiful smile on her face.”
Greene’s proposal was a surprise to
everyone but the Union Club staff. “I got
to the club early for the 6 p.m. dinner
and told our waiter that I was going to
propose to my date. I also mentioned it
to Claudio. All of the Union Club staff was
very attentive.” The couple have not yet
announced their wedding plans. “But
stay tuned,” said Greene.

yet there is more to life than work. one of Maschke’s favorite spots is the
gordon Square arts District home along the Shoreway that she shares with
her architect/developer/art gallery owner husband robert (who designed
the modern, C-shaped abode) and 6-year-old daughter, Siena. “We like
the dynamics of having Cleveland downtown as a still backdrop and seeing
the ever-evolving cityscape and the natural beauty of lake erie,” she says.
“My favorite aspect of living in the C-house is that i can appreciate sunrises
in the living room and enjoy sunsets in my bedroom. it makes me feel
connected with nature.”
to achieve that, Maschke, who enjoys travelling internationally for leisure
as well as work, often draws on her familiarity with many global cultures.
“one of the accomplishments i feel proud of is helping eaton set up a
business startup in China in 2004-05 while living there,” she says. “our
team negotiated a land purchase agreement with the local government
and built a new world-class facility to expand production locally to satisfy
growing local and regional demand.”
When asked what is exciting with eaton, Maschke cited last year’s $13
billion acquisition of the global electrical products manufacturer Cooper
industries. it is the largest acquisition in the company’s 101-year-history.
“this is a transformational milestone that expands our market segment
reach, broadens our portfolio of products, services and solutions, and
strengthens our global geographic footprint,” she says. “the transaction
will further accelerate eaton’s growth as a global integrated power
management company focused on one of the most challenging megatrends
always the optimist, Maschke never regards being female or foreign-born as
a professional hindrance. “We define how people respect us,” she says.

Maschke’s affinity for nature extends to other aspects of her life. “growing
up in China, preventive health, holistic health, and natural health are
traditionally practiced and incorporated in our daily lives,” she says of her
interest in natural remedies. adding to Maschke’s work-life balance is her
community involvement. She serves on the engaging Women’s Committee
at the union Club and on the Cleveland institute of art’s board of directors.
Most importantly, she and robert fully share parenting responsibilities,
allowing each to travel or attend meetings. “in my case, being a
professional woman, it’s been critical to have a partner who is supportive,”
Maschke says.
