2 Installation of the ETK - the various versions
You can choose between three ETK versions:
 Local (standalone) version:
All the programs and files required for using the ETK are copied to your computer here. Therefore,
no additional computer is required to use the ETK.
 Client/server version:
This version consists of two parts, the server part that is installed on a server and the client part
that is installed on the computers of the end users (client computers). The client computers have
to be connected via a network to the server.
 ISIS version
The ISIS version is generally a Client/Server Installation. The difference is the hardware and a different installation routine.
When starting the ETK for the first time after installation, please note that it can be started and configured by logging in using the user-ID "admin" together with the password "admin". Please note that the
password for this user-ID should then be changed for security reasons.
2.1 Installation of the standalone version
2.1.1 Requirements
The requirements specified under the item "System Requirements - General" for the installation of
the "Local (standalone) version" must be fulfilled.
2.1.2 Installation procedure

After you click "Next" the required files are copied to the destination directory, this can take a few
minutes.

With the standalone installation the ETK also consists of a client and a server component. This
division will only be visible to you at the point that now follows: the client and server require a free
port in order to be able to communicate. The installation program automatically recommends a
free port. You should only change this pre-setting if you are familiar with changing your computer's port assignments and know that the recommended port is free but required by a different
program that is inactive during the specification of the port. In this case, please modify the recommended port assignments with other free ports.

Under Windows Server 2008 you may be prompted to confirm the execution of the setup. Please
confirm the dialog with “Allow I trust this program. I know where it’s from or I’ve used it before.”

First of all, the Setup requests the path to your JDK. Please choose the appropriate Path and confirm the dialog with “OK”. Note: If the setup can’t find a proper JDK version the dialog won’t close.
If you do not know where the JDK is located, you can use your File Explorer to search for the file
javac.exe. You then have to specify a higher directory (which then also contains bin\javac.exe).

2.2.4 Sharing of Company Directory and opening the Tomcat-Port
In Windows the Company Directory has to be shared on the Server. For this purpose the „File and
Printer Sharing“ has to be enabled and then the Directory has to be shared in Explorer. In addition the
Tomcat-Port (Application-Port) has to be opened in the Windows-Firewall. If you've forgotten the port,
you can see the “install.log” file. The “install.log” can be found in the ETK-Server root directory.
Another way to find out the Tomcat-Port is like the following:
On the ETK-Server change with the Explorer to the Company Directory (in this case: c:\etkclient) and
change there to: classes.
There is a „javaclient.properties“. Please open this file with an Editor. There you can find in Line 7 a
server.URL. This URL contains the Tomcat-Port (in this example: 49165).
How to do this in detail is described in the following.

2.2.4.4 Linux
If ETK was installed on your computer for the first time, you must now configure Samba in such a way
that the Windows clients can subsequently connect via network drive with the Linux server. To do so,
please open the file smb.conf (e.g., /etc/samba/smb.conf) to, e.g., add the following entry:
[etk]
path = /etkclient
public = yes
read only = yes

The line "path=/etkclient" means that the client directory has to be installed on the
Linux server under /etkclient.
 [etk] means that with the share-name "ETK" you can connect from your Window client to the LINUX server.
 To activate this entry, you have to re-start Samba. To do so, you can use the following command:  rcsmb restart
If the ETK was installed sometime on your computer, you should however carry out a Samba restart
after an additional installation or an update in order to make certain that the Windows clients can again
access the network driver.
2.2.5 Starting “ETK Admin” on server
The Admintool can be started by running the file „admintool.exe“ (or "admintool.sh" for LINUX) in the
subdirectory "..\admintool" of the installation directory. The server is automatically started (under Windows this is set up as a "Service").
2.2.6 Removing the ETK Server
To remove the ETK server, please proceed as follows:

files in the destination directory will be deleted)" and confirm the selection with "OK".

Check whether the installation directory was removed from your sever.
2.2.7 Update
To update (if you have received a new DVD, or you want to modify the interface configuration) the
ETK server, proceed as follows:






Ensure that none of the connected ETK clients are active.
Open the file "install_server.exe" (or "install_server.sh" for LINUX) on DVD.
Select the required language and confirm the selection with "OK".
In the "Select Action" dialog box, select the entry "Update the ETK server" and click "OK" to confirm the selection.
Note: If you have inserted a DVD with an older version than the currently installed version, a
warning message will be displayed. If the procedure is OK, you can continue the update at this
point or, if you are unsure, cancel it.
If you chose to continue you will again be asked to specify the interface parameters and can modify these. The publication data stored on the DVD will then be read in (note, it may also be that the
data read in is older than the data already installed). If you do not want to read in the publication
data, because for example you only want to modify the interface settings, you can cancel the update at this point.

ASAP enters for you user ID. Note: You should only change these default settings if you are
familiar with your computer's port assignments and know that, although the recommended
port is currently free, a different (presently inactive) program uses the port. In this case, please
modify the recommended port assignments with other free ports of your choice. In addition,
you should only change the default value for the "Start Command" box if you have installed
the ERC in a different location than the recommended installation directory. If you modify the
port settings, please note the item "Troubleshooting“
To save your settings, click "Save"
You can now quit ASAP by pressing "Log out".
3.1.3 Step 2 – Basic Settings in “ETK Admin” – (Admintool)

3.1.4 Settings “Central search versus Local search”
For the "Central Parts Search" function, which provides the option of carrying out the ETK search in
the central BMW database, the following additional configurations must be made in addition to the
basic configuration (see also 3.1.3 Basic settings in "ETK Admin" – Admintool):


To use the "Central Parts Search" function the ETK user must have been assigned the right to
use that function. To check this, go to the required user in "Administration  User Administration". If you do not see "Central Parts Search" in the “User function rights” (on the right side),
choose the "Central Parts Search" in “All function rights” (on the left side) and click ">". To
confirm the change, click "Save" in the "User administration" dialog box.
For the use of the central publication data/catalogue data, select the "Extras Settings" dialog
box in the ETK. In this dialog box you can select between "local" and "central" catalogue, provided you as user have the "Central Search" function right. To confirm the selection, click
"OK".
3.1.5 Settings “Determine options via central database”
To activate or deactivate the "Determine options via central database" function from case to case, the
user can select the check box. In this connection it should be noted that the basic settings described in
3.1.3 Basic settings in "ETK Admin" – Admintool) are a requirement for using this functionality.
3.1.6 Settings “ASAP functions”

4 Troubleshooting
Question:
The installation does not start, or closes immediately without displaying a dialog box.
Answer:
There is probably no JAVA JDK installed on your computer, or the installed cannot be found. Try to
type "java –version" into the command line. If the "java" command cannot be found, you will have to
download a compatible JAVA (JDK) for your operating system.
Question:
The server installation starts, but displays an error message stating that the installed Java version is
too old?
Answer:
For the server installation, the ETK requires the JAVA version 1.5.0_11 (JDK) or higher. As was described in the answer to the first question, you can download a JAVA 1.5.0_11 (JDK) version that is
compatible with your operating system.
Question:
Is it possible to subsequently configure the interfaces without having to re-load the publication data?
Answer:
Yes, to do so you have to start the installation program again. You can then configure the interfaces. If
the "Select CD-ROM drive" dialog box appears, please click "Cancel “. The interface has now been
reconfigured without you having to load the publication data again.
Question:
When the server is being removed, the following message appears: "An error has occurred during the
deletion of the company directory!“ What can I do?
Answer:
At least one of the client directories created for the separate companies could not be deleted. Even so,
the server was removed. You can now attempt to manually delete the directory. On reason why it may
not have been possible to delete a directory, e.g., could be that a client user had opened the directory,
e.g. in the Explorer.
Question:
You do not have the required ASAP login needed to use the ASAP functions. Where do you get this
authorization?
Answer:
Please ask your administrator or the ASAP person responsible for your market.
Question:
While carrying out the communication settings in ASAP, you changed the recommended ports. The
communication between ETK and ASAP does not function even though you followed the instructions.
What do you have to do?
Answer:
Please contact the ETK Support (see chapter 5).
Question:
© BMW Group 2013
62
ETK Installation and Configuration Manual
Where do I get the JAVA JRE required under "Extended requirements “?
Answer:
There are various places where you can get the required JAVA Plugin (JRE):
1. JAVA Plugin (JRE) is automatically installed via download on your computer when you enter
ASAP.
2. Contact your administrator.
Question:
It is not possible to install the JAVA plug-in (JRE) or the plug-in wants to download itself again each
time that the ASAP is opened. The communication between the ETK and the ASAP is not working.
What can I do?
Answer:
A possible cause could be the strict security policy in your network or lacking rights for installing software on your computer. Please contact your administrator.
