Welcome to
the exciting
world of XS
XS lets you specify your crane – exactly
according to your individual requirements.
As we began developing the XS crane system, it was with a single
purpose: to provide you with a crane that precisely meets your
requirements. The solution we came up with was a highly modular
system. This allows us to deliver practically every XS crane according to detailed customer specifications. This brochure helps you to
find the right XS crane for your needs.
The full name of each XS crane is derived from its particular model
number/capacity, link system, boom system and control system. The
main features of each of these key crane components are detailed
over the following pages.
Every choice you make effects the performance and characteristics
of the crane, including its lifting capacity, speed and precision. To
simplify your selection, we are introducing a rating system which
compares the qualities of each control system – the centre of the
XS crane.

Tailor-made cranes
What is XS?
Crane size vs. Capacity
A HIAB XS loader crane stands out from all other
cranes on the market. Inspired by the needs of crane
operators and driven by our passion for excellence and
innovation, the XS is a crane that delivers unsurpassed
performance and flexibility. The XS range breaks free
from conventional thinking in crane architecture to give
you more freedom to specify requirements than ever
before. This results in a crane with capacity, features and
functions that are perfectly matched to the jobs you want
it to do – a purpose-designed crane, setting new standards
in productivity.
The three-digit crane model number, divided by ten,
gives you an idea of the capacity in tonne metres. But
each crane model has its own capacity range – the exact
capacity depends on the control system.
Control units (p. 32)
Your crane can be controlled in basically two
different ways, directly via levers or by remote
control. Levers can be positioned either at
the base of the crane or on a platform or at a
high seat. The remote control unit is always
where you are, comfortably attached to a belt
around your waist, or placed in a bracket at
the control platform or high seat.
Intelligence systems (p. 28)
A large number of electronic functions, for
safety as well as for productivity are available
for your Hiab crane. These are all managed by
a system called SPACE which is a computer,
devised to discretely assist you in operating
the crane. The SPACE electronics are housed
in a 100% weather-proof casing and are
extremely reliable and easy to use.
VSL
Thanks to the VSL function drivers can give
their full attention to driving the crane. The
crane’s intelligent system (SPACE) automatically takes care of the stability – something
that improves safety for you and those
around you.

Link systems (p. 16)
Boom systems (p. 14)
Innovative mechanical links developed with
the aid of advanced computer design help to
optimise the crane’s performance. The outer
boom link improves the crane’s manoeuvrability, while the inner boom link increases its
lifting capacity.
Your crane is available with a choice of different boom systems. Each boom type is a highly
efficient all-rounder, capable of handling all
kinds of jobs. Some boom systems however,
are optimised to provide enhanced performance for specific tasks. Depending on crane
model, you can choose up to nine extensions.
An optional jib gives improved flexibility to
reach in to confined spaces, it also extends
the maximum lifting height of the crane.
Hydraulics (p. 20)
The main valve is the hydraulic heart of the
crane. All Hiab valves can handle very large
amounts of oil per minute and still give you
superb fingertip feel and precision while
operating the crane.
Control systems (p. 36)
The control system has a major impact
on your crane’s performance in terms of
lifting capacity, precision, speed, safety and
comfort. Depending on crane model, you
have a choice of five control systems: Classic,
Duo, HiDuo, Pro and HiPro.

Crane size vs.
Capacity
The crane name only tells part of the story
The three-digit number in the crane name gives you a
pretty good idea of a crane’s capacity – but not the entire
picture. Most crane models cover a capacity range. But the
exact lifting capacity depends on which control system
you specify.
In fact, a smaller crane model can have a higher
capacity than a larger one. In the 13-tonne metre range,
for example, a more advanced version of the HIAB
XS 122 lifts more than the lead-in model in the HIAB
XS 144 range. Generally, when faced with this option,
there is a lot to be gained by selecting the lighter, more
advanced crane.
Hiab provides a total of five different control systems,
which one you can choose for your crane depends on the
crane model. Whilst each system ensures outstanding
cargo handling performance across the full range of
applications, each step up the range provides increasingly
advanced features.

Mechanics – Boom systems
Choosing the right crane geometry
for your application
Hiab offers a range of boom systems featuring different
inner and outer boom lengths‚ different numbers of
extensions‚ and different geometries. Each system endows
the crane with its own special characteristics. The one
that you choose will largely be dictated by the main
applications for your crane. So‚ whether you mostly do
high or low lifts‚ work close to the vehicle or at a distance‚
or do a bit of everything‚ there’s a Hiab boom system that
is ideally suited to your needs.
Unless otherwise specified‚ your XS crane will be
equipped with our A-boom system. With its regular boom
lengths and normal characteristics‚ it delivers solid allround performance. Built to incorporate as many as nine
extensions for maximum outreach‚ the A-boom system is
suitable for a wide range of applications. It’s the perfect
choice if you do different types of jobs from day to day.
But if you want your crane to perform more specific‚ more
demanding tasks‚ more often‚ you’ll need a boom system
that is optimised for the challenge. On these pages we
describe some of our most popular solutions.

Foldable boom systems
A-boom
A-boom
The A-boom is an all-round boom, well suited for doing all
kinds of jobs. It can be delivered with up to nine hydraulic
extensions on selected models. The boom is designed to
be very stable and rigid, making it suitable for even the
toughest of jobs. Also, it can be equipped with a jib providing yet another load-handling degree of freedom.
P-boom
P-boom
The P-boom has up to five extensions. Each extension
is slightly longer, giving you a greater outreach than a
conventional A-boom. This also gives you the benefit of
lower weight, thereby increasing the maximum lifting
capacity. The P-boom system is ideal for handling heavy
bulky loads, such as precast concrete and containers.
S-boom
S-boom
The S-boom system features a short outer boom. This
facilitates higher lifts close to the crane base, allowing
you to load a second-layer pallet close to the crane base
without removing the adjacent pallet. You can also park
the crane, even on a short tipper, without detaching the
bucket. The short outer boom increases lifting capacity –
especially at close range, and saves weight.
Non-foldable boom systems
K-boom
K-boom
L-boom
The non-foldable K-boom system has geometries that are
ideally suited for meeting the demands of the buildingmaterials industries. It has an extra-long inner boom
and a shorter outer boom. The long inner boom provides
faster moves from close in to far out. On the K-boom
system, the two outer boom extensions come out at the
same time, driven by only one cylinder and a chain connection. This doubles extension speed, thus giving a very
fast overall load cycle speed.
L-boom
This non-foldable boom system has geometries that are
ideally suited for meeting the demands of the buildingmaterials industries. It has an extra-long inner boom and
a short outer boom and extensions. The long inner boom
provides faster moves from far out to close in, giving
greatly improved load-cycle speed.

Mechanics – Link systems
How a small piece of steel can make a big difference
A mechanical link is quite simply a piece of steel. But it
does remarkable things to your crane. Hiab’s optional
link systems consist of two different combinations of
links mounted on the crane boom. These are the D-link
and the E-link systems, each of which offers a number of
significant performance advantages.
For those who simply want a solid, all-round crane with
an outstanding reach and without compromising an inch
on quality, cranes without links, the B-link system, remain
an excellent investment.
No link (B-link).
Double link (E-link).
The difference in capacity range
between a crane with a B-link and
one with an E-link.
16
PF-XSC-EN-OS_NY.indd 16
2011-12-08 10.47
B-link
B-link
The B-link system is actually a boom without links. This
configuration is used on the most basic cranes. In practice
the term B-link is only useful when comparing cranes
with and without links. The primary benefit of the B-link
solution (no links) is keeping down weight.
D-link
D-link
The D-link system is an outer boom link, which provides a
lever connection between the inner and outer boom. The
main function of the D-link is to enable the outer boom to
move at a constant speed, resulting in smooth and precise
performance. The system absorbs peaks and shocks
during excavation work, making the crane easy to work
with. In addition the D-link does not protrude below the
boom, ensuring it does not interfere with load positioned
under the boom.
E-link
E-link
The E-link system comprises both an inner boom link
and an outer boom link. The E-link system significantly
increases the crane’s lifting capacity in high boom positions, especially when working close to the column. It
is ideally suited on scaffolding by delivering heavy loads
with a straight boom system, all the way up to the crane’s
maximum reach. The outer boom link does not protrude
below the boom and thereby does not interfere with load
placed under the boom.

Hydraulics
The heart of the crane
Valve 91
The main valve is the hydraulic heart of the crane. The
valve is always adapted to the specific capacity and functions that the crane should be able to perform. To put
things simply, the higher performance the larger oil flow
required. All Hiab valves can handle very large amounts
of oil per minute and still give you a direct and precise
control of the crane.
The Hiab Valve 91 represents the pinnacle of hydraulic
valve technology. It is load-sensing and pressure-compensated which improves both speed and precision. It
features a wide range of top class features, one being that
the same control lever movement always produces the
same crane response, irrespective of whether you are
using one function or more, with a light or heavy load.
Valve 91 also ensures Pump Flow Distribution (PFD)
which keeps the crane operating independently of
the oil flow available. This keeps lifting, hoisting and
other crane functions running simultaneously at the
same relative speed. Valve 91 enables your crane to be
controlled with finger-tip precision regardless of how far
out the crane boom tip is. This, of course is invaluable in
confined spaces.
Valve 80
The Hiab Valve 80 is a top-of-the-line open-centre valve
based on well-proven technique which gives superb
reliability. It features very good dynamic characteristics
and performs with ease while slewing and handling
numerous operations at the same time. When stressed to
the max, other valves on the market produce vibration in
the hydraulic system. This is all a thing of the past for the
Hiab Valve 80. It can handle large oil flows, distributing
great power to the cylinders and all other hydraulic functions, and yet it can be controlled with high precision.

Electronics – Safety features
Electronic safety functions
Hiab has developed a number of safety features designed
to monitor all crane movements. These are designed
to act with as little interference as possible with the
operator’s way of handling the crane. If the operator starts
moving into a sector that is unstable, or risk overloading,
the system will alert the driver discretely. If needed, the
system will take the particular movement to a nice and
gentle stop. The safety systems are active at all time in
the background, and when using the crane normally the
systems are not to be noticed by the operator.
Operator Protection System (OPS)

Stability in slewing sector
Over Load Protection (OLP)
High boom warning
Pioneering standards of safety are built into every single
crane that bears the Hiab name. Our electronic Over Load
Protection (OLP) system is at the leading edge of crane
safety technology. It is designed on the principle that no
crane should be brought to a halt without good cause, but
equally there should be no compromise in operator safety.
Each and every movement is monitored by the OLP
system. A movement is only stopped when there is a real
risk of exceeding the crane’s limits by continuing with
that movement. Other movements however, are allowed
to continue as normal.
The presence of OLP is extremely reassuring for you as an
operator. It protects from dangerous overload situations
and the real danger of the truck tipping over. OLP is also
very discrete, remaining invisible to the operator unless
and until the system senses a potential problem. The
system allows work to proceed even as the operator is
approaching an overload situation. But when the crane
reaches 90% of its maximum capacity, the operator is
alerted, enabling him to take corrective action and carry
on working.
In the rare situation where OLP does not allow any
movement at all, it can be temporarily disconnected
for five seconds. The operator can then move out of the
overload situation, without restarting the crane. If a jib
or hoist is being used, OLP controls their position and
movement as well. Only a Hiab crane, equipped with OLP,
allows you full freedom in all situations.
When the pressure is on and you need to get to the next
job fast, mistakes can happen. For example, if a driver
forgets to park the crane, the consequences could be
serious. In these situations, you’ll appreciate a safety
function like high boom warning. The SPACE system
continuously monitors the boom position. If the crane is
left in its upright position, an indicator lamp in the cabin
will alert the driver before driving away.
Stability in slewing sector
Whatever truck/crane combination you have, Hiab will
calculate the working area available to the front of the
truck cabin as well as the slewing angle and capacity that
can be used in this traditionally unstable sector. The crane
can then be adjusted accordingly after installation on the
vehicle. This means that the crane operator can now slew
360° around the crane base, with only slightly reduced
lifting capacity when working in front of the vehicle cabin.
Operator Protection System (OPS)
The Operator Protection System (OPS) is designed to
protect the operator when controlling the crane. This is
achieved by defining a “virtual safety cage” that the crane
is restricted from moving into. The size and position of
the virtual safety cage can be easily adjusted to fit the
vehicle-crane combination of your choice. The system is
activated as soon as the operator steps onto the platform
and deactivates as soon as the operator steps down
from it.

Electronics – Productivity features
Increasing your productivity in
unique and innovative ways
The Hiab name has always been synonymous with innovation. No other crane manufacturer invests more time,
money and effort in research, development and continuous improvement. And no other manufacturer does more
to add value to your crane.
We have developed four systems, each unique to Hiab,
that provide extra capacity, improve operating efficiency
and ultimately increase your productivity. They are Automatic Duty Control (ADC), Manual Speed Control (MSC),
Automatic Speed Control (ASC) and Pump Flow Distribution (PFD).
Other productivity increasing functions are Automatic
Dumping of Oil (ADO) and Automatic Damping
System (ADS), adding even more value to your crane.
Each system is designed to self-activate smoothly and
automatically, without operator intervention, ensuring
that the task is completed efficiently. Which of these
advanced functions are available to you depends on your
choice of control system..
26
PF-XSC-EN-OS_NY.indd 26
2011-12-08 10.48
Automatic Duty Control (ADC))
Manual Speed Control (MSC)
Automatic Duty Control (ADC), patented by Hiab, is the
only fully automatic duty control function on the market.
ADC will automatically boost the maximum capacity of
the crane with around 10% during regular operation. If
the crane registers upward pressure on the boom tip – as
is the case when digging or auguring – the capacity will
return to normal level. The ADC-function is active in
the background at all times – leaving the operator free
to fully concentrate on the job at hand, thereby increasing productivity.
MSC increases the capacity of the crane up to 10% in
one step. When the crane reaches its regular maximum
loading limit, the MSC function will really make a difference. MSC automatically boosts the capacity by slightly
reducing the speed of the inner and outer boom. This
means the operator can focus totally on the job at hand.
MSC delivers greater capacity when you need it most.
Automatic Dumping of Oil (ADO)
Automatic Dumping of Oil (ADO) serves to bring the oil
straight back from the pump into the tank when the crane
is running idle. By doing this the oil keeps its cooling
and lubricating properties for a longer time. This will
significantly decrease wear on the hydraulic system, lower
maintenance costs and fuel consumption.
Automatic Damping System (ADS)
The ADS consists of a damping and load-holding valve
mounted on the slewing mechanism. It proves mostly
valuable on cranes with more than three extensions as
it gives gentle damping even if a control lever is released
hastily. In applications where slewing is frequently
used, e.g. bucket operation, loading and unloading at
long outreaches etc., ADS gives increased precision and
higher productivity.
Pump Flow Distribution (PFD)
Hiab cranes can handle the highest oil throughput in the
market. But skilled crane drivers, able to operate several
functions at the same time, want even more from their
crane. And Hiab delivers, with PFD. In situations where
the operator is working at the limits and using multiple
functions simultaneously, even the largest pump may not
be able to supply enough oil. This can result in the crane
acting unpredictably, but not if your crane is equipped
with PFD. This innovative system distributes the available
oil in proportion to the operator’s lever movements. All
functions will continue to work just as expected with no
disturbances or surprises, although you require more oil
flow than available. Once full oil flow is restored, it is full
speed ahead once again.
PFD has proven extremely useful in practice. Even at an
oil flow of 100 l/min, the system activates three times per
load cycle during normal use. If you demand maximum
convenience and productivity from your crane, you
should not settle for less than a crane equipped with PFD.
Automatic Speed Control (ASC)
ASC gives a stepless increase in lifting capacity of up to
10%, all in one smooth, continuous motion. This feature,
unique to Hiab, engages automatically, which means that
the operator does not feel or notice a thing. The function
activates as you reach the regular capacity limit, meaning
that you can still lift the load where other cranes would
have come to a complete stop. To compensate for the
capacity boost, the speed of the inner and outer boom is
slightly reduced. Capacity ceiling, safety and efficiency are
significantly increased by this feature.

Electronics – Intelligence systems
Intelligence systems
SPACE 3000
All electronic functions are managed by the SPACE
system, which is a computer devised to intelligently assist
you in operating your crane. The SPACE electronics are
housed in a 100% weather-proof casing and is extremely
reliable and easy to use. On the front of the casing a
number of indicators clearly show vital information to the
operator. As an example, the pressure in the two cylinders
is displayed continuously. Observing these indicators
proves very useful when positioning the booms for lifting
loads at maximum capacity.
The SPACE intelligence system is available in three different configurations, each one with an increasing number of
advanced and productive functions.
All configurations benefit from the highly advanced Over
Load Protection (OLP) system. Productivity functions in
the system are Automatic Duty Control (ADC), Manual
Speed Control (MSC), Automatic Speed Control (ASC)
and Pump Flow Distribution (PFD). These functions can
be used separately or in combination. A valuable feature
for service personnel is that fault code indication and load
cycle data is also stored in the system. This can be used for
analysis and feedback to the customer as to how he or she
uses the crane.
SPACE 3000 is the basic intelligence system and then
follows the SPACE 4000. Finally the SPACE 5000 system
provides you with a productivity and safety solution that
is second to none, and of course, all four configurations
include OLP.
The SPACE 3000 can be delivered with Automatic Duty
Control (ADC) and Manual Speed Control (MSC) for
increased productivity.
This system is a part of the CL, Duo and Pro
control systems.
PF-XSC-EN-OS_NY.indd 28
SPACE 4000
The SPACE 4000 system features Automatic Duty
Control (ADC) and the Automatic Speed Control (ASC)
function. The ASC function boosts capacity in a smooth,
stepless motion and thus gives an edge in load handling
and capacity that proves very valuable.
The SPACE 4000 is a part of the HiDuo control system.
SPACE 5000
The SPACE 5000 system features Automatic Duty
Control (ADC) and the Automatic Speed Control (ASC)
function. The later function boosts capacity in a smooth,
stepless motion and in addition to this Pump Flow
Distribution (PFD) ensures super-smooth operation at
all times.
The SPACE 5000 is a part of the HiPro control system.

Control units
Side controls
The manual way of operating your crane is through
levers placed at the crane base. The control levers can as
an option be positioned at other positions on the crane,
see further information in the optional control solutions section.
Operating your crane by remote control
One of the benefits of Hiab’s remote control units is that
the crane operator can be positioned at the best possible
location when operating the crane. This leads to more
efficient, comfortable work and also increases safety.
A further spin-off effect is that you can be your own
loading assistant positioning yourself next to the load, or
wherever the loading assistant should be standing. Tasks
will be completed faster and at lower cost.
XSDrive
The Hiab XSDrive remote control unit is focused on
giving maximum ergonomic advantages as well as
function. It features two-way communication with the
crane using radio or cable. The XSDrive controls up to
24 proportional functions, and in addition to that it also
incorporates up to seven easy to reach on/off functions.
The robust design makes the XSDrive very durable and
also easy to operate wearing working gloves.
The weight of the XSDrive is approximately 1.8 kg.
CombiDrive2
Operating your crane by remote control
With the Hiab CombiDrive2 you can benefit from
information, precision, feel and function – to a higher
degree than with anything else on the market. Three
active displays give access to vital information from your
crane. A live symbol indication function ensures that the
correct lever symbol is shown at all times – no matter
what function is currently running on each lever. The
lever response is outstanding, enabling load handling with
finger-tip feel and precision.
The weight of the CombiDrive2 is approximately 2.3 kg..

Optional control solutions
Depending on the control system and crane model‚ you
can choose between the following options for controlling
your crane:
• Cross-controls Cross-controls incorporate the same control
lever sequence on either side of the truck, minimizing the
risk of human error.
• High seat A high seat provides an excellent view allowing
the operator to track the boom-tip through the entire slewing
sector, minimizing the danger resulting from blind angles.
Once in the high seat the operator is also at a very safe position. The levers are mounted directly onto the control valve
which gives a superb feel for the load. If your crane is remotely controlled there is a bracket at the high seat to place your
control unit in.
• Control platform A control platform, including a range of
safety options, offers extra convenience and enhanced visibility of the operating area. The control platform is very easy to
get on to, ensuring fast loading and unloading when needed.
If your crane is remotely controlled there is a bracket at the
platform to place your control unit in.
XSDrive
Control platform
Manual control levers are situated at the
control platform on a crane with the CL, Duo
or Pro control system. For cranes with the
the HiDuo or HiPro control system there is a
bracket to place the remote control unit in.

Control systems
Control systems
By combining choices of electronic, hydraulic and control
unit components, a control system package is brought to
life. The control system determines the crane’s performance in terms of its lifting capacity, precision, speed,
safety and comfort.
Hiab offers five different control systems: CL, Duo,
HiDuo, Pro and HiPro. Each of these systems embodies
the advanced technology, superb quality and unrivalled
reliability for which Hiab is renowned. However, with
each step up the range, you benefit from additional or
enhanced features that provide incremental improvements in key aspects of the crane’s performance. The
more advanced the control system, the greater the
productivity of the crane.

Your quick guide to choosing
the right control system
There is always a Hiab crane matched to your specific
requirements, and selecting the right one for your
business has never been easier.
Our rating system offers a quick guide in order to make
the right decisions even more comfortably. It gives you a
comparative overview of Hiab’s control systems, based on
their impact on lifting capacity, precision, speed, safety
and comfort.
The rating system provides a unique set of comparative
data, along with definitions of each quality.
It is subject to change as new technology is introduced;
a ‘5’ today may well rate as a ‘3’ tomorrow. On our web
site, www.hiab.com, you will always find a complete and
up-to-date list of control systems and rating data and the
latest ratings.

• Capacity The capacity rating indicates how much the
control system increases the crane’s actual lifting capacity
(in tonne metre). In general, of course, a larger crane has a
higher capacity than a smaller one.
• Precision The precision rating is a measurement of the
control system’s contribution to the crane’s precision; more
specifically the correlation between lever and crane movements. High precision means that the control system allows
the crane to be operated smoothly even at high speed and
heavy load, and that the operator can set down the load
gently even at long range from the truck.
• Speed The speed rating refers to the crane’s load cycle
speed, which in turn depends on the available oil flow and
its distribution to the different functions that are being used.
There is also a link between precision and load cycle speed:
The more precise the crane movements, the easier it is to
place the goods, and the shorter the load cycles.
• Basic/optional safety The safety rating describes the
crane’s overall protection against personal injury and
damaged goods. It includes functions ensuring stability and
safe crane motion, as well as alerts preventing crane-related
driving accidents. Basic safety refers to functions included in
the control system, whereas Optional safety refers to extra
functions. Even a control system rated lower on optional
safety meets every regulatory safety requirement.
• Comfort Comfort is a “soft” performance indicator, determining the general manoeuvrability of a crane, as well as the
crane’s ease of use and the ergonomics of the controls. For
example, a radio remote control adds to the comfort rating
of a control system.
