AROUND ASIA Project name: Niagara Industrial Equipment Corp. Building, Philippines Founded in 1968, Niagara has more than 30 years of experience in making quality fans and blowers. Architect: Eduardo S. Casares Architects and Associates, Philippines Niagara has a wide range of ventilation products which are suitable for various applications ranging from general ventilation, kitchen exhaust system and building ventilation requirements; to various industrial processes like dust collection, painting booth exhaust, fans for ovens, high pressure blower for combustion air, for burner systems and even fans suitable for corrosive applications. Terracotta is manufactured from 100% natural raw materials. As we look more towards environmental protection and sustainability, this is a building material that will certainly contribute towards a more green and sustainable environment. Products: 1. NBK Architectural Terracotta Facade 22mm Tile 2. Baguette 50 x 50 The rainscreen and sunscreen components of the NBK Architectural Terracotta panels provide major benefits in the thermal performance of buildings due to their UV resistance and "back ventilation" properties, which assist in maintaining a dry cavity that relieves buildup of hot air. Year of completion: 2015 One of the latest project to be clad in terracotta is King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in the newly-developed town of Thuwul, Saudi Arabia. Covering 6.5 million square feet, KAUST is the largest project to be clad in terracotta."It was important to me that a public building in a public place ages gracefully," said Architect Ernst Mayr. "Therefore materials such as sheet metal and granite were ruled out from the start. Terracotta offers several advantages. Although the building is self-contained and also highly monumental, the use of terracotta means that the overall visual effect is not brutal. I also didn't want a building in grey, but a colour that radiates warmth and friendliness. In this case, the light terracotta colour is ideally suitable." The 26-building campus was developed by multiple design teams at globally renowned architectural firm. Description: Niagara Industrial Equipment Corporation is a leading manufacturer of commercial and industrial fans and blower in the Philippines. Alex Hilario, Country Head, Philippines Rep Office, added, “NBK Architectural Terracotta facades have opened up a completely new dimension in façade design and has been embraced by architects around the world for outstanding versatility, design flexibility and building performance characteristics.” Its longevity and sustainability, along with its energy-related and environmentally friendly characteristics guarantee Terracotta a secure position in the construction sector 1 1 In this issue we would also like to introduce an innovative solution that combine our QuadroClad® honeycomb and NBK Architectural Terracotta ventilated façade systems with the new, ultra-efficient AirFlow™ technology to save energy, reduce capital costs and to improve indoor air quality to exceed green building standards. 1 So open your mind, and RE-EXPLORE and RE-IMAGINE the possibilities of terracotta and build a greener and more sustainable environment for all! The surrounding brick buildings have a certain depth and we wanted to pick up on that by creating a cladding system with bespoke extrusions that would create different effects – we didn’t want a flat surface.” - Maurits van der Staay, Project Architect with Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW) Located between Oxford Street and Covent Garden, Central Saint Giles, a London commercial and housing scheme designed by Renzo Piano, has been attracting attention ever since its glazed ceramic facades in tiles of red, orange, yellow, green and grey began to appear back in May 2010. The project team comprised Stanhope, Legal & General and Mitsubishi Estate as developers; RPBW as architects, Fletcher Priest as executive architects and Arup as structural, services, fire and transport engineers. The ground floor glazing parts were built by Seele, whilst the ceramic and glass facades were built by Schneider Group. NBK supplied the terracotta elements. Central Saint Giles is not a completely new construction, but a large brownfield redevelopment. The land was formerly occupied by a dull Ministry of Defense building. The new mixed-use space includes 40,000m2 of offices and 9,500m2 of housing - 100 apartments – set around a new public square filled with cafes and restaurants. The transparent ground level of the building adds a feeling of permeability at street level, allowing passersby to see through and into the site, accessible by five pedestrian entrances leading into the public piazza. Renzo Piano has designed 20-set multi-story front facades, in bright coloured planes set at angles, which create a stunning play with colours. Rarely a place for working and living was accompanied with so much architectural vitality. Office space in the project won the British BREEAM "Excellent Class" rating. BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology), first published by the 20 • Make A Difference ASIA Make A Difference ASIA • 21 Building Research Establishment (BRE) in 1990, is the world’s longest established method of assessing, rating, and certifying the sustainability of buildings. More than 250,000 buildings have been BREEAM certified, many in the UK and others in more than 50 countries around the world. Design Goals The original building was a very humble building, being occupied by the Ministry of Defence. Through a strong visual of colours, it was hoped that this neglected area of central London could be regenerated and prosperity be once brought to this region. The main design objectives include : ● To strengthen the potential of the area through a two prong approach of strengthening its local presence as well as importance to the city ● Intensive locale activities, reasonable distribution of the buildings, respecting and complementing the neighbourhood ● Through utilisation, improve the surrounding public spaces ● To elevate the surrounding environment through a careful selection of colours and detailing ● The building must not only meet current living standards but must be future-proof and sustainable as well. Stale air. Sick building syndrome. These are some of the problems typically faced by developers, building owners and consultants. Rear view of AIRFLOW Panel exploded axonometric will also help to reduce the capacity hence cost of the air conditioning system by between 7 to 10%. Breathe Fresh - The AIRFLOW Panel helps to improve the indoor air quality by eliminating most of the mould-forming moisture. Front view of AIRFLOW Panel exploded axonometric “Not anymore,” declared Mr. John E. Breshears, President and CEO of Architectural Applications. Mr. John E. Breshears is a registered architect and mechanical engineer in the Unites States. He is the inventor of the AirFlowTM Panel. The newly developed green building product, AIRFLOW Panel, was funded by the prestigious ARPA - E program of the US Department of Energy with collaborative support from ARUP, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and the ETH - Zurich. The AIRFLOW Panel works as an Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) membrane-based heat and moisture heat exchanger. It is integrated within the NBK terracotta and QuadroClad honeycomb walls’ ventilated rainscreen cavity. Stay Healthy - As the mould-forming moisture is eliminated, this will help to reduce sick building syndrome and improve the building occupants’ health. Sustainability - AIRFLOW panels help to meet green building energy codes and certification standards like USA’s LEED certification and Singapore’s BCA Greenmark certification. Increased Leasable Area - The use of AIRFLOW panels enable building owners to reclaim leasable floor space due to a reduction in the centralised ventilation pathways. “What we have done is to take two existing facade lines from Hunter Douglas, namely NBK terracotta and QuadroClad honeycomb ventilated facade systems, combine each system with the Airflow technology, to create two new building system solutions, each based on either NBK terracotta and AIRFLOW panels or QuadroClad and AIRFLOW panels.” 24 • Make A Difference ASIA Benefits of using the NBK Interior Wall Panel System include: - Each panel is individualised and can be removed and changed individually, making it easier for maintenance - Appearance is neat with joint gaps of only 5mm complete with integrated black PVC central spacer - The support system is fully adjustable to suit site installation - The tiles are able to withstand impact and can dampen vibration due to integrated EPDM rings - Fixing clip includes stopper hook to prevent panel uplift / drop off during vibrations (e.g. moving trains), - New fixing clip accommodates for 2 x panels reducing number of fixing clips required - Cavity gap behind allows for concealed services and easy accessibility for maintenance - Open ventilated joints allows for moisture / humidity from substrate to expel from cavity To see how the panels can be integrated into the buildings’ common spaces, please contact our offices in Asia. How AIRFLOW Panels work A polymer-based membrane permeates moisture and conducts heat between the incoming and outgoing ventilation airstreams. Integrated within the wall panels, these membrane exchangers have a large surface area for ultra-high performance without taking valuable floor space. Key Benefits and What It Means for the Users Save Energy - The Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) membrane-based heat and moisture heat exchanger is designed to remove heat and humidity before the air enters the HVAC system. This will help to save between 25 to 50% on the air conditioning energy. The AIRFLOW Panel Traditionally, NBK terracotta panels have been designed for outdoor usage. Expanding its use indoors, NBK Interior Wall Panel System is a new attractively priced patented glazed terracotta system developed exclusively for the interior walls in pedestrian walkways and areas such as MRT, underground stations, airports and shopping centres.
