he Tigard Area Chamber of Commerce (TACC) is a nonprofit private business organization of over 300 fun,
friendly, business savvy, member businesses and growing.
We have four major goals:

STRENGTHEN OUR LOCAL ECONOMY
A believer in building and promoting the local economy in Tigard,
the Tigard Chamber has engaged at a variety of levels to impact
Tigard’s economy. These include:
• Promotion of the local business community and shopping
local through the annual Tigard Chamber Business Directory &
Community Guide (10,000 copies) and partner events with the
Westside Economic Alliance and City of Tigard.
• Acquisition of the Tigard Farmers Market in 2012 and its
relocation in 2013 into the Downtown Tigard Core. Most

recently the Tigard Chamber and the Tigard Farmers Market
landed a $73,000 USDA grant that will be spent locally to
drive more visibility, engagement and awareness of the Tigard
Farmers Market overall and its EBT, SNAP and WIC programs.
• Bringing Symposium Coffee to Downtown Tigard – Through
thoughtful and purposeful dialogue at a board level, the Tigard
Chamber chose to target impactful retail for an anchor tenant
in the Tigard Chamber building, reaching out and partnering
with Symposium Coffee (founded in Sherwood) to open their
second retail location in the heart of Downtown Tigard.
• Key Partner role in the Tigard Downtown Alliance (TDA) - The
Tigard Chamber is a founding Stakeholder and Board Member
in the burgeoning Tigard Downtown Alliance, a non-profit
group whose mission is to represent the interests of a wide
range of Downtown stakeholders, while guiding the changes
needed for a vibrant and thriving Downtown for the benefit of
the entire community.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
The Tigard Chamber provides more than 80 face to face
business networking opportunities annually through: Good
Morning Tigard (weekly a.m.), Tigard Young Professionals
monthly educational breakfasts and Cheers monthly after hours
networking, Quick Connections (Speed Networking), numerous
Government & Public Policy Advocacy events and four annual
chamber events.
Members can also market/connect/be seen/learn through:

PROMOTING THE COMMUNITY
The Tigard Chamber and its members promote the local
community through coordination of the annual Tigard Shining
Stars Community Awards Celebration (scholarships, volunteer
and business awards), our seasonal (May-October) Tigard
Farmers Market, donations to non-profits, coordination of
annual Street Fair, Trick or Treat Main Street and Holiday Tree
Lighting on Main Street, Tigard-Tualatin Relay for Life and other
events. A community focused section of our biweekly eNews,
a Community/Visitor guide within our annual Tigard Business
Directory, a dedicated community/visitor section of the Tigard
Chamber website and a walk in Visitor Center that contains
an interactive digital kiosk and hundreds of brochures, maps,
business information and more ensure that the Tigard area
is promoted to both residents and visitors to our community.
Shopping local is a constant mantra.

A Place to Call Home.
T
igard, Oregon is a suburban community located just
eight miles southwest of downtown Portland. The city is
largely residential, and is home to a mix of office space,
industry and commercial and retail businesses. Tigard has
preserved its unique character, but it faces big city demands
for infrastructure. With residents totaling 50,000, the daytime
population approaches 100,000 including inbound employees
and customers of local businesses.

Tigard is home to over 3,000 businesses. Approximately 85
percent of Tigard residents commute outside the city for work
each day. Likewise 92 percent of workers employed by Tigard
businesses commute into the city from other parts of the region.
The convergence of Interstate 5 and Highways 99W and 217
makes Tigard conveniently located for business but also home
to some of the highest traffic volumes in the state, especially
during peak commute times. Approximately 330,000 vehicles pass
through Tigard along these thoroughfares on an average day.
In a recent community attitudes survey, 99 percent said they are
satisfied or very satisfied with Tigard as a place to live. The city’s
park system has approximately 452 acres of parks, greenways
and natural areas.
Bond rating agencies increased Tigard’s rating in 2011 showing
Tigard’s sound fiscal decisions and sense of stewardship with
public funds. The city continues to seek creative solutions,
including partnerships, technology, and targeted revenue sources,
to address infrastructure and service delivery challenges.
EDUCATION & SCHOOLS
The Tigard-Tualatin School District* is the 9th largest
school district in Oregon and the 5th largest in the Portland
metropolitan area. They are large enough to provide a
comprehensive academic program for their students and small
enough to maintain close connections with their staff, students,
parents and community.
Their two high schools, one alternative school, one online school,
three middle schools and ten elementary schools serve the
communities of Durham, Metzger, King City, Bull Mountain as
well as Tigard and Tualatin. They have kept pace with the steady
growth of these communities over the last 30 years by opening
new schools and expanded classroom facilities.
Their K-12 reading intervention program and their response
to intervention initiative for identifying struggling students are
nationally recognized.
STRONG COMMUNITY
PARTNERSHIPS AND VOTER
SUPPORT FOR EDUCATION
Generous community support and responsible financial
decisions are providing quality educational programs and
facilities for all students. In May 2011, voters approved a $20
million bond measure to buy new textbooks and computer
technology and to complete facility improvements district-wide.
New school buildings and classroom additions have been
constructed throughout the district since 2004 thanks also to a
bond measure overwhelmingly approved by voters in 2002. In
November 2014, voters also renewed the district’s Local Option
levy to provide additional operating dollars to fund classroom
teachers. Donations to the Foundation for Tigard Tualatin
Schools have provided funds for support staff, innovative
classroom projects and fine arts programs during the 2013-14
school year.
Because of conservative budget planning, district music, P.E.,
counseling, electives, activity and athletic programs will generally
remain intact in 2014-15 and all Tigard-Tualatin students will
have a full 171-day school year.

The City of Tigard is broken down into 13 discrete geographic
areas, each of which has its own blog maintained by a volunteer.
Visiting these neighborhood blogs can give you a unique feel for
each of these areas.

to Live Laugh Love Glass, and for a day of natural beauty, they’re
just a short drive away from some of the best trails in the state
at Mount Talbert Nature Park.”

Movoto Real Estate ranks cities by state in terms of best places
to live starting with the top 50 in population then grades them
based on the following criteria.
The neighborhoods closest to central Tigard were built in the
1960-1980”s and provide traditional family homes, usually on
generous lots. Tigard is not laid out in a traditional grid pattern
due to hills and a more country atmosphere, so many Tigard
neighborhoods enjoy curving streets. Due to in-fill building, you´ll
find well-planned town home developments tucked into many
neighborhoods. Apartment living is also available. Many of these
neighborhoods are fairly well treed with old-growth evergreens
towering above the homes.

start with the latter. The median household income here is a
healthy $62,000—34 percent higher than the state’s average.
What can residents do with all that extra cash? Well, they can go

Newer developments can be found throughout Tigard, with
most near the southwestern end of Tigard, including those
near Interstate 5. Bull Mountain has spectacular views and
there you will find a wide variety of planned developments and
neighborhoods including executive estates. Many homes situated
in Tigard hillside neighborhoods enjoy views of Mt. Hood or the
coastal mountains. Neighborhoods near popular Cook Park
including Picks Landing are popular with families as well as the
neighborhoods surrounding Summer Lake Park.

communities supporting walking, hiking, biking and dog friendly
activities. You will find something to suit every taste within the
breadth of neighborhoods within Tigard.

SENIOR LIVING
HISTORY
Tigard has a host of communities and activities for those over
55. The Tigard Senior Center is a bustle of activities with clubs,
classes, music, trips and more. The Center is also rich in civic
programs noting that the lunch program for seniors serves
more than 40,000 meals annually. The Meals on Wheels
program also is available to those confined to their homes.
A buddy program matches volunteers with homebound
residents for lunch chats on a regular basis.
Tigard (pronounced TY-gerd) is located in Washington County in
the lower Willamette Valley, a region that for thousands of years
was the territory of the Atfalati Kalapuya, a band that nineteenthcentury settlers called the Tualatin. The Tualatin resided in
permanent villages during the winter and spent the remainder
of the year roaming the valley to hunt and gather. In the early
1830s, a deadly malaria epidemic struck the band, decimating it
and killing as much as 97 percent of the population.
Tigard is home to several 55+ and senior communities that
offer golf, swimming and clubhouse activities to their residents.
These include Summerfield Retirement Estates* and King City*.
Incorporated King City is a community of more than 2,000
residents that includes its own nine-hole golf course, town hall,
shopping center, convalescent center and lawn bowling rink.

HEALTHCARE
Legacy Meridian Park Medical Center*, a modern full-service
facility, is located just five minutes from Tigard. Expanding
areas, such as the Family Birth Center, continue to meet the
growing needs of the community. Providence St. Vincent
Hospital is located just north of Tigard and also provides
emergency medical services to our community.
The Providence Newberg Medical Center in nearby Newberg,
is one of six hospitals in the nation and the only Oregon
hospital to be named a “2009 Best Place to Practice Award” –
recognizing top performing hospitals that sustain the highest
level of physician satisfaction. Additionally, it is the first Gold
LEED certified hospital in the country. Newberg is a short 10-15
minute drive for those residents living in the southern parts of
Tigard/King City.
Wilson Tigard was not the first pioneer to settle in the area, but
within a year of arriving he had helped establish the first school
in the new community. He bought his claim from another settler
in 1852; it was one of a collection of isolated farms that made up
the area originally known as Butte and East Butte.
By the early 1850s, William Graham, John Hickin, and George
and Soloman Richardson had established Donation Land claims
in Butte. A new East Butte school was built in 1869, and the
Butte Grange organized in 1874. Still, the community remained
without much of a focal point until Charles Tigard, Wilson’s son,
opened a general store and meeting hall in 1880. The store was
located along the Portland-Salem Road, a route that passed
along the eastern border of his father’s claim. Seven years later,
Charles Tigard’s store began operating the area’s first post office,
which was named Tigardville in honor of his parents.
CHARLES F. TIGARD HOME
The opening of the Oregon Electric Railway’s Tigard station in
1908 connected the town with Portland, Salem, and Eugene.
For the first time, Tigard was “minutes away” from Portland.
To avoid any potential confusion with the railway’s Wilsonville
stop, the Oregon Electric named the local stop Tigard. When
the rail station was built in a section of town called North
Tigardville, about a mile from Charles Tigard’s store and other
businesses, commercial development shifted to the area
around the new station.

TIGARDVILLE GENERAL STORE & POST OFFICE
The Oregon Electric Railway also helped Tigard become a
residential destination for people working in Portland. In 1909, a
real-estate developer platted the Burnham Tract, a subdivision
with nine lots. In 1927, a larger subdivision called Morin’s
Addition was platted with thirty-five lots. Tigard continued to be
primarily a farming community, but it was slowly transformed
by growth after World War II. New highways were constructed
through Tigard as automobiles replaced trains and trolleys. The
completion of Oregon Highway 99W and Interstate 5 during the
1950s and 1960s brought more people to the area.
As existing residential services became strained, the Tigard Area
Chamber of Commerce began advocating for self-rule, and an
incorporation measure was placed on the ballot in June 1958.
The measure failed by two votes.
A second election for incorporation narrowly failed four months
later. Only after the perceived threat of annexation by the City of
Portland three years later did voters barely approve incorporation.
The City of Tigard was created on September 11, 1961, more than a
hundred years after pioneers first settled the area.
Within ten years of incorporation, the City of Tigard’s population
and geographic size more than doubled. In 2014, the city’s
population exceeds 50,000, and there were over 3,400
businesses. Despite this remarkable growth, reminders of Tigard’s
past are still visible throughout the city. One of Tigard’s many
historic homes is the John Tigard House, a Carpenter Gothic
Victorian house built in 1880 by Wilson Tigard’s eldest son.
Local governments, school leaders, citizen groups, business
and individuals work hard to build upon Tigard’s significant
community attributes as the city enters the 21st century.

Washington County Visitor Association’s network of Visitor
Centers. As such, we provide information to local, state,
national and international visitors about our area and our local
companies and attractions. In partnership with the City of Tigard,
we provide free WIFI service to the entire Tigard downtown

maps and other information on the local area accessible during

The Tigard Historical Association saved the house from
demolition and restored it in the late 1970s; it was listed in
the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Annual familyoriented events include the Festival of Balloons in June and the
Explore Downtown Tigard Street Fair in August.

igard is home to the 22 year old Tigard Area Farmers Market
(TAFM) Featuring 47 vendors, local cooking demonstrations,
and partnerships with local service agencies and community
gardening projects, the market is poised to become the
centerpiece of the neighborhood, creating a safe and inviting
community space. Owned by the Tigard Chamber since January of
2012, the TAFM is focused on bringing farmers, community and
non-profits together in a way that benefits all.

Wednesday Market from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Tigard Grange

weekly non-profit booth space gives all the opportunity to give back.
Our ongoing commitment is to bring fresh, locally produced fruits,

We have exciting news for the upcoming season! As a 2014
USDA Grant recipient we will be able to improve access and
awareness of healthy food for low income families, children and
the Tigard Community.
The TAFM is pleased to be able to accept EBT/SNAP cards for
market token purchases and further to provide a match for
patrons using those cards due to a generous grant from New
Seasons. The matching program starts the first Sunday in July
and runs till funds are exhausted. Many of our participating
farms also accept WIC and fruit and veggie vouchers.

beginning Mother’s Day through the end of October from 9 a.m.
to 2 p.m. in the Public Works parking lot near the corner of Hall

hether you want to skate, bike, run, walk, kayak, fish,
picnic, play with your kids and/or your dog, or more,
Tigard’s got you covered with 452 acres of parks,
greenways and natural areas. Pick from three dog parks, a skate
park and 21 more parks scattered throughout Tigard. On the
banks of the Tualatin River, the 79-acre Cook Park is the largest
park in the City and has something for everyone. Whether
baseball, basketball, volleyball, softball, or soccer is your sport,
you can burn up some energy on the many courts and fields
available. Cook Park also offers horseshoe pits, a fishing dock,
small boat ramp for easy water sport access, playground and
several walking trails and bike paths (over two miles of hard
surface trails and 1/2 mile of soft trails).
INDOOR/OUTDOOR
Whether visiting or a resident, Tigard offers easy access to
numerous indoor and outdoor activities. A 75-90 minute drive
gets you to the scenic Oregon Coast or picturesque Mt. Hood.
If you have never seen a volcano, then a three hour drive into
Washington State takes you to Mt. St. Helens and its trails and
interpretive centers.
Closer to home, you can hike, bike, bird, picnic, smell the flowers,
relax and more in numerous locations including:

Park and Summerlake Park shelters can be made in person or
online through the City of Tigard.

BONITA PARK
Milton Court at Bonita Park
Bonita Park is a small 3.5-acre neighborhood park located
on Milton Court off Bonita Road in south central Tigard.
The major features at Bonita Park are a play structure,
small picnic shelter, basketball court, wetland restoration,
portable rest rooms and open lawn play areas.
EASTEBUTTE HERITAGE PARK
103rd Avenue and Canterbury Lane
This park is located at 103rd Avenue and Canterbury Lane.
The Historic John Tigard House is located on the park
grounds. Future development will include trails, a small
play structure, picnic tables and interpretive signage.
ELIZABETH PRICE PARK
13001 SW Bull Mountain Road
This 2.5-acre park is built on top of a water reservoir on
Bull Mountain Road. The park has a small play ground and
an interpretive trail on top of the reservoir.
FANNO CREEK PARK
Just south of Burnham Street between Hall
Boulevard & Main Street
Near downtown Tigard, Fanno Creek Park has trails that
run near Tigard City Hall and the Tigard Library. The park
is a 31-acre linear park along Fanno Creek dedicated
to green space and trails. Future plans for this park include
a plaza and gathering area near downtown, storm water
gardens, a reintroduced creek meander, new bridge
crossings and trail connections, and educational and
recreational opportunities.
JACK PARK
12420 SW 127th Avenue
This hidden 8-acre neighborhood park is tucked away in
north central Tigard. The park has a ball field, play
structure, and basketball court. Future development will
allow parking and trail access from the TVFR station on
Walnut Street.

14250 Northview Drive
Located on the west side of Tigard, Northview Drive is the
setting for this 3.5-acre neighborhood park. Amenities
include a small shelter and play structure.
SENN PARK
9852 SW 74th Avenue
Located on 74th Avenue in the northeast part of Tigard,
future development of this .2-acre pocket park will include
a play structure and a small shelter overlooking the
undeveloped Senn green space.
WOODARD PARK
10155 SW Johnson Street
This quiet 10-acre neighborhood park is located in central
Tigard on the Fanno Creek Trail south of Tiedeman Avenue.
The park features large pine and oak trees, an elementary
age play structure, a tot-lot play structure and a small
picnic shelter.
COOK PARK
17005 SW 92nd Avenue
The largest park in Tigard’s system (79 acres) is on the
Tualatin River. Cook Park offers the Tupling Butterfly
Garden, wetland viewing gazebo, large parking area, play
structures, rest room facilities, concession stand, boat
dock, hard and soft trails, and an on-site park maintenance
staff. The park’s sports fields and picnic shelters can be
reserved. A portion of the Fanno Creek Trail runs through
Cook Park and across the Tualatin River pedestrian bridge
to Tualatin.
SUMMERLAKE PARK
11450 SW Winterlake Drive
Summerlake Park is a 27-acre community park in
the north part of Tigard. The main features include the
Sorg Memorial Rhododendron Garden and an off-leash
dog park. The park also features two playgrounds, hard
and soft trails around the 7-acre lake, restrooms, a picnic
shelter that is available for reservation, tennis and basket
ball courts, a small baseball field, and off-street parking.

roadway Rose Theatre Company* has been entertaining
audiences with big Broadway musicals, comedies, and
revues since 1992 and is proud to be Oregon’s premier
musical theater company.
Broadway Rose’s mission is to create unparalleled musical
theater experiences that invigorate audiences and enrich our
communities. The company offers six main stage shows, two
children’s theater productions, and a teen workshop production
each year. In addition, Broadway Rose boasts excellent
educational outreach programming including drama camps,
technical internships, and original educational musicals in
partnership with the Tigard/Tualatin School District.
As Washington County’s only professional musical theater
company, Broadway Rose plays an important role in enriching

The Foundation’s Art in the Burbs brings a diverse range of

will be awed by talented Tigard-Tualatin students as you stroll
through the student art gallery and entertained by student
musicians performing throughout the weekend.
20% of artist sales will be applied to support performing and fine
