Active in the ceramics sector since 1942, Eczacıbaşı launched its first modern production plant dedicated to vitrified ceramics in 1958. Not only a pioneer in its domestic market, the new plant was also the germinating seed of what grew into a globe spanning industrial powerhouse. Five decades on, VitrA is a top global contender in its sector in terms of product portfolio, production capacity and distribution channels. With a total of 25 production facilities in Turkey, Ireland, Germany and France, VitrA supplies millions of pieces of sanitaryware each year to over 75 countries on five continents, not to mention ceramic tiles, bathtubs and faucets, as well as bathroom furniture and accessories. Eczacıbaşı Building Products continues to grow with new investments and acquisitions. As the flagship brand, VitrA supplies the main driving force behind this bold growth strategy. A pioneer since its inception, VitrA is the only brand in global markets offering every component of the bathroom, combining design intelligence with the total bathroom concept. 5 6 VitrA Tiles Covering The World VitrA Tiles is a leading European manufacturer of professional and premium wall and floor tiles. Eight modern plants in Turkey, Ireland, Germany and France (Russia 2010) having an annual production capacity of 35 million m2, produce ceramic and porcelain tiles, 60 percent of which is sent to major international markets around the world. VitrA Tiles has sales offices and showrooms in Atlanta, Dublin, Arklow, Cork, Moscow, Cologne, Sofia, Orleans and a wide product portfolio that includes ceramic wall tiles, ceramic and porcelain floor tiles, mosaic and glass mosaic tiles, swimming pool tiles and complementary pieces. The first producer of mosaic tiles in Turkey, VitrA Tiles has two extensive tile ranges – VitrA Rezidans and VitrA Arkitekt – providing a broad array of styles varying in size between 1 x 1 and 60 x 120 cm. VitrA Rezidans offers aesthetic designs and a wide variety of indoor and outdoor tiles for living areas. VitrA Arkitekt offers professional tiles designed primarily for industrial and commercial establishments. VitrA Tiles has an inhouse design team developing products for all kinds of living spaces, from bathrooms to kitchens and living rooms, terraces and pools. It also works with prominent international designers like Defne Koz, NOA and Ross Lovegrove to create special collections. Always the innovator, VitrA Tiles launches numerous new design concepts every year that reflects global design trends. The most recent designs including stylish and highly durable porcelain tile series, mosaic tiles for every taste and other new products incorporating advanced surface technologies like VitrAclean, VitrAantibacterial and VitrAprotect. 7 8 Mission: Creating Bathroom Culture Influenced by the culture that gave birth to the sociable, luxurious Turkish hammam, VitrA elevates daily cleansing to make it a welcome ritual. In essence, VitrA creates contemporary hammams by applying superior aesthetic concepts and sophisticated technology to every touchpoint in the bathroom – while drawing inspiration from the art and craftsmanship of Anatolian traditions in ceramic art. Thus, our relationship with water is constantly refined and redefined, as it was centuries ago with the introduction of the hammam, to create new Bathroom Culture. Practical, comfortable and high-design, a VitrA bathroom is a complete, contemporary living space. It’s as inviting – though more private – as a living room or kitchen. In it we can restore balance to our lives through rest, recreation, indulgence in personal care and countless other revitalizing activities. As a result, the often overlooked space of the bathroom becomes a core chamber that improves not only our homes and our businesses, but also the flow of our daily lives. 9 10 History: An Utter Success from The Start Like most global brands, VitrA’s success story began at a local Ievel. In the 1940s Turkey faced huge shortages. To satisfy the demand for earthenware products, a ceramic manufacturing workshop was established in Kartal, Istanbul with an eight-man workforce. Post-war, the company grew and began to focus on ceramic sanitaryware – a novelty in the marbledominated Turkish market. Ceramic’s versatility and affordability made it a complete success domestically. The first production plant came on line to answer demand in 1958. Launching the “VitrA” brand in 1966, the Eczacıbaşı Group gradually extended its capacity to include the full range of sanitary products. Clockwise from left Left to right: Celal Bayar, Adnan Menderes, Nejat Eczacıbaşı, Ferit Eczacıbaşı at the opening of the ceramic factory, 1958 Nejat Eczacıbaşı The VitrA Kartal factory, circa 1960s VitrA’s first exports were made to Germany in the early 1980s. Soon after, VitrA began to establish itself as a global brand. To better serve its expanding foreign market, VitrA launched a manufacturing plant in Ireland in 1999. The recent acquisitions in Germany is further testament to VitrA’s global outlook. Engers, a major player in the German wall tile market, was taken over in early 2006. The following year, in March, the Division acquired 51% share and full management control of the highly prestigious Villeroy&Boch’s tile operation. And in 2008, VitrA in its fiftieth year in bathroom design acquired the German burgbad Company, the European leader of the luxury bathroom furniture market. 11 12 Production: Full Capacity and High Technology Worldwide, VitrA is the sixth largest manufacturer in its sector. In fact, its output of 5 million pieces of ceramic sanitaryware a year is greater than that of the entire ceramic sanitaryware industry of Germany. However, output alone is not the only reason VitrA’s manufacturing capabilities are significant. While answering growing global demand, these cutting-edge factories and plants allow VitrA to produce sophisticated designs and maintain extremely high standards. VitrA Plant Sites BOZÜYÜK, BİLECİK 5,000,000 pieces of ceramic sanitaryware, 3,000,000 faucets, 2,500,000 bathroom accessories and 18,000,000 m2 of tiles are produced yearly. Established in 1977 but completely overhauled in 1995, this mega-complex is one of the world’s top sanitaryware production facilities in capacity, technology and quality. Advanced technology includes: high-pressure casting, rapid-drying moulds, fettling robots in casting shops, and barcode follow-up. The Bozüyük tile plant produces wall and floor tiles, porcelain floor tiles, swimming pool products and complementary pieces. A separate plant in the complex produces building chemicals. Also in another factory bathroom accessories, shower systems and faucets are produced. TUZLA, İSTANBUL 3,000,000 m2 of tiles are produced annually. This is the reason why the studio can approach such a wide variety and scale of work, ranging from hotels to coffee cups, with endless originality and vitality. Thun has designed Water Jewels for VitrA, a collection with an imaginative use of different materials. ROSS LOVEGROVE (top right) Everyone needs bathrooms. VitrA’s quest is to create complete, satisfying bathroom environments. This means transforming often overlooked spaces into something more than a necessity of modern life. It’s about creating an enjoyable experience by changing our perception of and thus our interaction with the bathroom. To realise this ambition, VitrA employs a large inhouse design studio and collaborates with a world-class array of acclaimed industrial designers. These talented individuals not only improve bathroom aesthetics, but functionality as well. In 2006 alone, VitrA garnered four prestigious design awards. The İstanbul Collection by Ross Lovegrove won the Wallpaper Design Award for Best Bathroom, a Good Design Award and a Red Dot Design Award, while in 2007, the same design continued to win Elle Decor International Design Award in the bathroom category. Distinguished designer Defne Koz and her stunning Iznik Collection were also recognized with a Red Dot Design Award. One of the most fascinating designers of the 21st century and recipient of countless awards, Ross Lovegrove creates sculptural and organic shapes using sophisticated technology and materials. His design concept ‘organic essentialism’ is inspired by elements from the natural world which are then reshaped into futuristic forms. VitrA and Lovegrove collaboration has produced 3 ingenious designs; İstanbul, MOD and Freedom. From the outset, VitrA has been closely involved with the Eczacıbaşı Sports Club, which has trained some of Turkey’s top athletes since its creation in 1966. The club is currently focused on its women’s volleyball team; winner of 25 National Championships and five National Cups, finalist in eight European Cup Finals and Champion in 1999. VitrA also contributes to İstanbul Modern, Turkey’s first privately funded museum of modern art and founded by the Eczacıbaşı Group. VitrA furnished the washrooms for internationally acclaimed museum. 18 VitrA is also the proud sponsor of the VitrA Ceramic Arts Studio. Founded in 1957 by the Eczacıbaşı Group, the studio has opened its doors to a large number of young and talented ceramic artists. The VitrA Ceramic Arts Studio hosts regular exhibitions, slide shows, workshops and conferences. Aiming to create a bathroom culture with modern technology and contemporary design, VitrA believes that children of Turkey deserve higher quality facilities for education. Based on this motivation, in collaboration with ÇYDD (The Association in Support of Contemporary Living), VitrA takes on the responsibility to offer the healthy and hygienic environment that should be provided in YİBO’s, (Regional Primary Boarding Schools) located in deprived cities of Turkey. Unfortunately these schools lack sanitary conditions as a result of unfavourable urban infrastructure. VitrA is supporting this project by not only donating sanitaryware, but also developing the architectural solutions for the school buildings as well as hygiene and toilet training for children.
