But when the Mid-Cape Highway was built in 1950-1959, that splendid isolation was starting to end. The Cape Cod National Seashore Park 1961 -2011 It took the extraordinary vision of the communities of the Outer Cape and a young senator from Massachusetts in Washington D.C. to realize that this part of the Cape was on the threshold of irrevocable loss of natural and human habitat unless something big could prevent it. That something big was the Cape Cod National Seashore Park, a revolutionary step for the U.S. Department of the Interior to create a park which included protection of private property as well as wilderness. This year is the fiftieth anniversary of that historic effort and the resulting legislation signed into law in 1961 by then President John F. Kennedy. Today almost three-quarters of the Town of Provincetown is managed by the National Park Service which has successfully balanced traditional local use of the Provincelands with a mandate to grant universal public access to this fragile and spectacular National Park. The Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies 1976-2011 Fifteen years after the Park was created, Dr. Charles ‘Stormy’ Mayo, returned home to Provincetown with a new wife, the late Dr. Barbara Mayo, and plans to manage the family guest house while building a traditional wooden schooner to seek adventure in the tradition of his seafaring family. That adventure turned out to be the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies. Along with mentor Dr. Graham Giese of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Mayo’s brought together a vast synergy of concern about the fate of the Outer Cape shoreline and the wildlife of its waters. index 2011 CALENDAR 4 WHERE TO STAY 7 HOW TO GET HERE 11 WHERE TO EAT 13 WHERE TO SHOP 15 WEDDINGS 15 ARTS/MUSEUMS 17 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES 17 LOCAL SERVICES 19 COMMUNITY 21 Without research vessels, the fledging Center was confined to shore until Stormy worked out an arrangement with Al Avellar, the enterprising charter boat captain of the Dolphin Fleet who had just started including trips out to Stellwagen Bank not to fish, but to see whales. While Stormy taught the passengers about marine mammals, he used the decks of the Dolphin boats to collect data and photograph whales for identification and research. Thanks to these efforts Stellwagen Bank is now a National Marine Sanctuary and whale watching is a global phenomenon. The Provincetown Chamber salutes the Center and the National Seashore Park on their anniversary years. You both have done more than your share to preserve what is special about Provincetown and its unique coastal environment. If armies travel on their stomachs its safe to say the same is true for tourists. No one has ever gone hungry visiting Provincetown. The real surprise for our visitors is the diversity and quality of our food - from local, ethnic ‘fast food’ to outdoor cafe fare to the gourmet cuisine served in elegant dining rooms of historic mansions. Fresh local seafood is readily available — steamer clams, oysters, scallops, mussels, squid, bluefish, tuna, swordfish, and lobster, served in a variety of styles, most notably Portuguese.
