Ford has proudly announced that it has sold more than 1-million F-150 pickups with segment-exclusive EcoBoost engines in the United States. In the Canadian market, Ford has
sold nearly 200,000 EcoBoost F-150’s, which is just as impressive when you consider the
U.S has nearly 10 times the population we here in Canada have. Currently, the F-150 is
the only truck in its segment offering turbocharged direct injection engines which is a move
the competition is expected to start copying in the near future. First going on sale back in
2011, the original 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine offers V8-like power and claims best-in-class
towing numbers, while the 2.7-litre EcoBoost, which was introduced for the 2015 model
year, is selling at an ultra-high pace. The 2017 version of the F-150 is expected to go on
sale this fall and will include the second-generation 3.5L EcoBoost engine that will produce
450+ lb-ft of torque, which is best in class for a V6-powered pickup.

FCA Foundation and Jeep Return to
Vancouver to Celebrate Canada Day
with Wrangler Canstruction
The Jeep brand, FCA Canada and the FCA Foundation once again celebrated Canada Day
in Vancouver with non-profit organization Canstruction Inc. and together built a life-sized
version of the 2016 Jeep Wrangler out of canned-goods at the waterfront Canada Place
celebrations. Building on its Vancouver debut last year, the Canstruction Jeep Wrangler was
on display at the largest Canada Day celebration outside of the nation’s capital. The lifesized model was built using 5,000 full cans of non-perishable food which will be donated to
provide more than 3,500 meals to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. The structure
took approximately 12 hours to build and was partially assembled by local-area students
and scouts. The main purpose of the display was to highlight Canstruction and the FCA
Foundation’s goal to raise awareness for hunger and poverty through community service.
To further spread the word, the public was encouraged to join the fun and take a photo with
the Wrangler Canstruction and use the hashtag #Jeepselfie when posting on social media.
Collectively, through the Canstruction partner events that started in 2013, FCA Canada and
the FCA Foundation have donated approximately 59,500 cans of food.

2017 Silverado HD to Feature
All-New Intake System
The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD trucks will feature a patented air intake system that is
able to drive cool, dry air into the engine for sustained performance and cooler engine
temperatures under even the most demanding driving situations. The system is marked
by a dramatic hood scoop and will provide 60 percent of the air to the Duramax diesel engine from an inlet at the front of the hood. Therefore, the air provided to the engine is very
close to the outside ambient temperature and much cooler than the air under the hood.
This cooler air will help the engine run better under load and allow it to maintain full power
and vehicle speed for capable trailering in the toughest conditions. Additionally, there is
a ram-air effect from the incoming air at highway speed that helps pack more air into the
engine, and the air filter housing draws 40 percent additional air from a dry location in one
of the front fenders.
All-New Ford F-Series Super Duty
Raises Takes Towing, Hauling and
Engine Power to Next Level
PICK UP LOCATIONS
The all-new 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty is set to go on sale later on this year and
Ford has already claimed that it will have the most towing and hauling capability and most
horsepower and torque of any heavy-duty pickup truck currently available. The combination of high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy and high strength steel help reduce the
weight of the truck up to 350 pounds, a savings which allowed Ford to invest in more robust
components in key areas to provide more towing and hauling capability than ever before.
Additionally the Super Duty has undergone foundational improvements such as an all-new
fully boxed frame that is more than 95% high-strength steel and up to 24 times stiffer than
the previous frame. Maximum conventional towing for the new model is increased to 9,526
kg (21,000 pounds) while maximum gross combined weight rating for truck and trailer now
tops out at 18,960 kg (41,800 pounds) which is more than half the maximum weight of an
18-wheeler. Maximum payload for the new Super Duty is 3,461 kg (7,630 pounds) which is
yet another best-in-class figure. Finally the second generation 6.7L Power Stroke V8 turbo
diesel puts out an impressive 440 horsepower and 925 lb-ft of torque.

FEATURE: JEEP 75th ANNIVERSARY
Celebrates 75 Years
Wranlger Hits Milestone of its Own
Story by Russell Purcell,
photos courtesy of FCA Canada
I
t’s hard to believe that Jeep has been producing vehicles for
75 years, and even more surprising that the Jeep Wrangler
is celebrating a milestone of its own, that being its 30th anniversary. The venerable all-terrain utility vehicle replaced the
earlier CJ models back in 1986, and three generations on, has
established itself as a capable on- and off-road vehicle in a class
of its own.
The Wrangler’s architecture is similar in concept to that of its
forebear - meaning it is a relatively simple body-on-frame design,
1984 Jeep Cherokee
and many of its styling elements were carried over including the
near-vertical folding windscreen, removable doors, beefy roll
cage, and convertible top. However, with the move to the Wrangler platform, the design team elected to improve its ride quality
and level of refinement by borrowing the suspension, drivetrain,
and even interior elements from the company’s popular Cherokee
model of the period.
First-generation Wranglers carried the YJ nomenclature in the
Canadian market, and when they were revised a decade later, the
second generation models were tagged as TJ. Third-generation
Wranglers arrived for model year 2006 (JK), and the decision
was made to finally market the ever popular SUVs north of the
border under the Wrangler name.
The initial wave of YJ models was
manufactured in Brampton, Ontario,
before production moved to Toledo,
Ohio in 1992. You can spot the YJ model
by the fact that it featured rectangular
headlights, but later TJ and JK variants
feature round units like the CJ before
them.
The YJ may bear a significant resemblance to the CJ, but the reality is that
it was an all-new design that had been
engineered to offer consumers a Jeep
that would be more comfortable on
paved roads, in an effort to make it more
feasible as a daily driver. To accomplish
this, the YJ has a wider track and a little
less ground clearance than the CJ, but

hood and longer fenders which give the
vehicle a more aggressive look.
The roll cage was extended in 1992 to
allow for rear shoulder belts, and antilock brakes were added as an option the
following year. An automatic transmission
option for 4-cylinder Wranglers was added
to the menu in 1994, along with a standard
centre high-mounted brake light.
The YJ could be ordered with a soft-top
fitted with half doors with plastic zipper
windows, but full-frame doors with conventional glass windows were available
as an option. For those looking for more
protection from the elements and improved
security, a hard top (complete with rear
wiper and a defroster element) was a
common upgrade in Canada.
One thing that really sets the Jeep Wrangler
apart from other sport utility vehicles is the
it still retained a leaf spring suspension design to maintain its
rugged disposition when the pavement came to an end.
Early YJ models derived their motivation from a 2.5-litre inline
four-cylinder engine, or a 4.2-litre inline six, both AMC designs.
However, by 1991, the latter engine was replaced with a more
powerful 4.0-litre fuel-injected inline six-cylinder. Transmissions
included a 5-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic.
Other revisions during its decade-long production included the
addition of an ABS brake option, as well as the extension of the
roll cage to accommodate rear shoulder belts.
A host of significant changes were made to third-generation models, as the nose of the JK features an angled grille, whereas early
models had a flat face. While the JK still sports the Wrangler’s
signature seven-slot grille design, it does benefit from a shorter

variety of trim and option packages offered.
Special edition YJ models included the Islander, Sport, Sahara, Laredo, and the very
distinctive Renegade. These variants offered
distinct colours, graphics, and trim elements,
a trend that Jeep continues to this day.
1997 Jeep Wrangler TJ
The Wrangler continued to evolve and in
1997, the TJ rolled into showrooms with
improved ride and handling characteristics
garnered from its use of a coil-spring suspension design derived from that of the Jeep
Grand Cherokee. The 4.0-litre straight-six
engine was retained, as was the 2.5-litre base
offering, although the latter was replaced by
a 2.4-litre DOHC unit mid cycle.
There were a rather large number of special
models available during the reign of the
TJ platform, but the real gem here was the
arrival of a more extreme off-road variant
known as the Rubicon, a name derived from
the legendary Rubicon Trail in Californian’s
Sierra Nevada Mountains. The Rubicon
landed in 2002 to appease that portion of the
company’s loyal following who felt that Jeep
was losing its way and was catering too much
to “Yuppie” commuters. This robust model
featured front and rear air-actuated locking
Dana 44 axles, the Rock-Trac transfer case,
uprated shocks and springs, diamond plate
rocker panels, and big 16-inch alloy wheels
wrapped in aggressive Goodyear tires.
The next step for Wrangler was the development of a long-wheelbase version to allow
for four doors, a vastly improved passenger
cabin, and increased towing capabilities. The
Wrangler Unlimited rolled into showrooms in
late 2004.
Jeep Wrangler TJ
The Wrangler was completely redesigned

for 2007, emerging as the JK, which was wider, longer,
and way more refined in every department. However,
Jeep’s design team was very careful to ensure that the
new platform still retained the Wrangler’s legendary
prowess off-road. Welcome additions to the equipment
list included stability control for the first time, as well as
off-road tuned ABS brakes and a traction control system
with electronic limited slip differential.
The JK platform finally brought the Wrangler into the modern age with regards to its computer-operated systems,
safety and equipment, and as a result it is more efficient
and practical as a daily driver. Wranglers finally had
power windows and remote operated power door locks,
and a navigation system appeared on the options list.
The new JK sported a convertible soft top as standard
kit, but the majority of Canadian buyers seemed smitten by the new three-piece modular hardtop which was
available as an option. This innovative design allowed
the user to remove the panel segment above the front
seats to allow for an open air driving experience with
very little effort.
Jeep Wrangler JK
The Wrangler has continued to evolve with regards to
its arsenal of accessories and equipment, and items like
Hill Start Assist became standard, a Trailer Sway Control
system became available, as did tech upgrades in the
infotainment department. A revised soft top design made
it easier to manipulate, and the look and feel of the interior
has been moving upmarket with each passing year.
In 2012, the Wrangler received a heart transplant when
the Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 engine was slid into the engine

latter vehicle is part of a brand promotion
to celebrate 75 years of Jeep vehicles,
and the company is celebrating this
milestone by offering 75th Anniversary

interiors and premium features.
The fourth-generation Wrangler is expected to be on the horizon in the near
future, perhaps as early as 2017, but its
design is more likely to be evolutionary
rather than revolutionary. The reality is
that there is no reason to mess with a
recipe that seems to be working, as given

5-speed automatic transmission is available. Most models feature the proven

In recent years, Westin Automotive expanded its product

LED upgrades, interior accessories and soft tops are both common

Bestop® recently launched Sunrider, an all-weather replacement

features a patented folding design that lets owners flip the panel

original hardtop. This product, an attractive option for any Jeeper, is

features easy installation that an average DIYer can tackle.
Exterior styling options like fender flares, steps, slides or rails are
easy bolt-on installations that deliver a customized appearance. “As
a brand, we are working to enhance our presence in the product
categories that we currently offer such as recovery, lighting and
body protection by continuing to innovate both functionally and

the needs of the Jeep consumer spectrum, from hardcore off-roader
to weekend grocery-getter. Overall, quality is the common thread in
everything we produce,” said Jane Donnelly, Marketing Director of
FX Products, which includes brands like TrailFX® and FX Wheels.
Cargo management options such as roof racks account for extra
storage both on- and off-road. Front and rear bumpers with winch
integration, rock slider protection, dependable recovery items, as
well as sway bar, skid plate and performance upgrades are essential
for those crawling through rugged terrain. “The 07-16 Jeep JK Elite

T
he Chevrolet Silverado has been the ugly sister to the GMC
Sierra the last few years. For whatever reason the bow tie
front clip just wasn’t doing it. That all changes in 2016 with
the Silverado 1500 LTZ Z71 4x4 Crew Cab. With colour-coded
grille and handsome LED lighting package, this truck makes

the statement that it isn’t looking to be pretty. Not quite sporting everything that the fully-loaded High Country offers, this
truck is still loaded minus a few hard features.
Once you climb into the well-finished interior, you quickly
realize that it is a lux truck and very quiet. MyLink fires up on
the eight-inch display as soon as you open the door for entry.
Comfortable leather-stitched seats match the dash to give the
interior a sophisticated feel.
Chevy has remained with the
column shifter where the other
big two have gone in different
directions. I personally like that
they have stuck with tradition
here. There are big captains’
chairs and a big centre console with integrated charging
mat. It does feel a little open
and could do with a sliding
cover to protect the goodies.
Convenient phone stands are
designed in, but I wonder if it
isn’t too much temptation. Considering how luxury this truck
is, I was surprised that there is
no keyless entry or push button
start. How can that be? On the
plus side, the tailgate has been

This 2016 model sees a MyLink upgrade. The Silverado LTZ now features an easy-to-use infotainment

use and hands-free phone integration. There is some
duplication with CarPlay and the built-in Navigation,
but who doesn’t like options. With built-in wireless
charging, OnStar 4G LTE and wifi are very handy
for keeping the kids connected and submitting a last

safe to change up your music and if you find something to your liking; turn up that volume. I do find the

RV-ING: GULF STREAM VINTAGE CRUISER 19ERD
Looks Great,
Feels Great
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
R
V reviews typically focus on the function, convenience and value
features of a unit, be it any kind of trailer or motorized RV. Certainly,
that is the critical eye I use to scan a new product when I’m doing a
review. I am looking for what’s done right, what’s well-designed, and I try
to decipher how the manufacturer chose to spend its build money – sort
of reverse engineering. This visual review process takes hundreds of
features and their inter-relationships into account. Then I write about
my impressions. In the end, the best units are the ones where value,
great design and good workmanship gel together nicely. This then is
the story model for a typical RV review .
However, occasionally, a fourth factor comes into play - fun. Sometimes
a unit can simply be defined as first and foremost being fun. And that’s
what my first impression of Gulf Stream’s Vintage Cruiser was when
I took it out for a drive on a sunny afternoon in central Ontario’s lake
country.
Perhaps the best description of the Vintage Cruiser (one style but three
floorplans) is the line used in the brochure. “The fun and style of the
1950’s and the technology of the 21st century.” While this is certainly
marketing-speak, it’s pretty accurate.
I first saw this travel trailer at this year’s Louisville RV Show. It struck
me then the same way it did the day I took it out for a test drive – fun.
Put another way, the colour scheme, whimsical design cues and overall
look made me smile. And, it seems, I’m not the only one who has had
this reaction. The dealer I borrowed the trailer from told me that an
owner’s club has already been organized right here in Ontario, and
these units have only been available for a few months.
The colours and build cues are what strike you first when you look at
this trailer. In truth, much of what you react to comes from automotive
designs. Two-tone colours – both bold single tints and aqua-hues.

Inside happy print curtains billow over rounded, pleated cushions that
have that ’57 Chevy front seat look. Moulding edges, the fridge front
and outside graphics all carry that “Happy Days” theme.
Here, I think Gulf Stream is on to something. This look is certainly meant
to evoke nostalgia, but these images have and continue to be used in
pop culture of all kinds, so folks of every age react to them. You didn’t
have to live through the ‘50s to be smitten. Frankly, it’s better it you
didn’t; nostalgia is more about the heart than the head, after all.
Alright, so the fun factor certainly overshadows the fact that this is a very
conventional trailer. A single axle, one-box design, it can be considered
a light-weight. It has a GVWR of 4,133 lb, so it can be towed by a variety
of vehicles, minivans, even the new Honda Ridgeline.
At 22’11” long, it uses a spread-out-the-sleepers design. A large
bedroom is in the front and the fold-down booth dinette is across the
52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2016
full width of the trailer at the back. Toilet, shower, refrigerator and stove
are set amidships right over the single axle. This centralizes the weight
and shows in how it feels stable going down the road.
That fold-down dinette table will sleep two, and the bed in front is a
queen-size with an aisle on both sides and soft door for privacy. A
second privacy mode in this central hall design works with the toilet
door left open to block the hallway to the kitchen/dinette area. With
that door open, the toilet, sink, vanity and shower across the hallway
become part of the bedroom space with its built-in wardrobes. Lots of
room and privacy for anyone’s morning or nightly routine.
In fact, I noted right away that the size of the shower and the separate
toilet enclosure in this unit is very modern, to say the least, and a
good example of Gulf Stream’s product tagline – “technology of the
21st century.” A true ‘50s trailer design put much less emphasis on
bathroom size.
Having thought about that last phrase a bit, I looked around for what
else buyers can enjoy in this 2016 travel trailer that they never would
have in 1956. Think about it; we often wax poetic about the “good old
days,” but consider what you’d have never found in a trailer of this size
in the ‘50s (or ‘60s and even ‘70s).
For instance: air conditioning, thermostatically controlled propane
heating, microwave oven, LED lighting (inside and out), powered
a powered range hood and sufficient cupboard and
drawer space. The flooring is hard-wearing vinyl in a
dark wood board motif. There is no carpet and that’s
good in a small trailer – much easier to keep things
tidy without it. The rear dinette also gets some love
with enough space for four “real” people to sit at;
when this doubles as a bed, it’s also bigger than
some. As for storage, there is a single pass-thru at
the front and a few other inside spots – but it’s not a
lot. Outside hookups, fill nozzles and dump valves
are well-positioned and clearly marked. In many
ways, if this trailer wasn’t being called “Vintage,” it
would simply be a well-built, decent, small trailer that
suits a small family or a couple with friends who visit
occasionally.
Here is where Gulf Stream’s idea will pay dividends.
Say you’re looking for a decent smaller trailer - the
Cruiser is that. Now why not have a trailer that is fun
too. It has this sense of whimsy with its cute design
motifs; after all, camping is supposed to be fun, so
why not?
awning, lightweight design incorporating aluminum and high-strength
steel, radial tires, undercoating, powder-coated frame, powered
tongue jack, checker plate stone guard, polyurethane battery and LP
gas tank cover, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, flat-screen
TVs, prewired cable and satellite up-hooks, double sinks, AM/FM/CD
radio, large capacity 3-way refrigerator/freezer, 30amp (or greater)
shore power hookup, seamless, smooth exterior surfaces. That’s just
a partial list, as I looked around and through the unit. This is what you
have to love about modern nostalgia – all the aahhh moments without
the bother of last century technology.
Overall, the trailer shows good balance, space-wise. The design gives
the kitchen area just enough importance to make it compact and usable.
It features a twin-burner stove, deep double sink with gooseneck faucet,
On the road the unit tows easily, feeling light overall. My tow vehicle
for this test was a 2016 Ram R/T pickup. It’s a Regular cab, short-bed
2WD truck that in some ways is also displaying a nostalgic look, yet with
all the modern automotive conveniences including a 5.7-litre Hemi V8
with an eight-speed transmission. To set off the powerful stance of the
truck, Ram has put 22-inch factory chrome wheels on the truck. This
model also has the Ramboxes built into its flanks, which offer easilyaccessed lockable storage. A factory tonneau cover also creates lots
of storage for the stuff that won’t fit in the trailer. Towing with this rig
was effortless – another reason why I mention that many less-powerful
vehicles will also manage the Vintage Cruiser competently.
A fun trailer hooked to a very eye-catching fun truck. Some days I
love my job.
