A Communi K-12 from
Library Media Services
A new addition to the databases provided to FNSBSD
students and staff this year is Culturegrams. This product
includes four modules with “concise, reliable, and up-todate reports on more than 200 countries, each U.S. state, and all
13 Canadian provinces and territories.” There is the Kids
Edition with country information targeted at elementary;
the States Edition providing information on the United
States for K-12; the World Edition, which has country
information geared more for secondary; and the Provinces
Edition providing resources for K-12 about our neighbor
Canada.
Included for teachers is a 162 page Training Activities
download with ideas broken down into grades K-5, 6-8 and
9-12. A feature of the database well worth investigating is
the Graphs and Tables Tool, where students may build
their own comparison charts of data they select either
about one or multiple countries or states. The extensive
collections of videos, slideshows, interviews and recipes
are delightful adding considerably to the information about
each culture represented.
If you want to access this product from home, log in to the
district web page and then go to the LMS Homework Help
page for Culturegram login and password, which we are
required to keep behind the firewall. Enjoy!!

Word Clouds
Teaching Channel has visual warm-ups
to introduce academic vocabulary prior
to a unit study. Create a word cloud of
that vocabulary. Watch the video
(about a minute) and TRY IT! The
idea is not limited to science; social
studies, English, or even a foreign
language class can have fun with this
literacy strategy.
