12 years, MDS system, $20M Eng. & 12 installations
6 years - IADC electronic Daily Drilling Report, 97 - 98
6 years, Driller’s Display, 40 systems in operations
5 years, Global Reporting System, 1998 - 2000
3 years, IT rig services and systems integration
2-3 years, Maurer Tally Sheet, Pocket PC for the drill floor
2 year, eDrill … remote eqt support and monitoring
… Drillers will have to share more with other players

More Recent IT Challenges for Drillers
• Mergers, G/SF, T/SF/RBF …
• 5th Generation rigs, Deepwater and Harsh environment,
more technology demanding
• Performance Analysis & Tracking to Reduce DT
• Enhance delivery and enlarge services
• Higher Costs & Higher Competition
• Not anymore only a rate for each day on contract:
– Incentive programs, higher day rates justifiable by performance,
Deeper waters, Dual activity rigs, new drilling technology
• High turn over, Nationalizations, Know how collection
• KM & Lateral Learning
Calgary – 29 April 2004
Page 21
WITSML for Drillers …
• Drilling industry is conservative, more than oilfield
• IT involvement in drilling is very recent, early 90’s
• As our industry starts to see the need to exchange for
better rig management and integration as well as
enhanced service delivery
• WITSML is seen as an important initiative by some
• Drillers move will depend on Operators requirements
• IADC will follow and support
