Can We Have a LGBT Community Center in
Savannah? Yes, We Can!
For more than 15 years, the leadership of FCN has
dreamed about and informally discussed the establishment
of a LGBT Community Center. Over the thirty years of
FCN’s existence, no central meeting place/focal point has
been available. All groups affiliated with FCN: Savannah
PRIDE, StandOut Youth, PFLAG, LGBT AA/NA group,
and even the FCN Board, meet in public or donated space,
in homes and churches; none of which provide privacy.
There are no confidential HIV testing sites other than the
public health department, no private space for transgender
people to meet for support and comfort, and no safe
place for questioning LGBT teens and young adults to go
for support and, when necessary, a respite from familycentered emotional abuse or worse. HIV and AIDS support
groups are meeting wherever they can. Irreplaceable
LGBT historic items and equipment is stacked in storage
units. Not having a ‘home’ contributes to a lack of
common direction and mission, joint fundraising and even
something like the difficulty of establishing an events
calendar among the various LGBT groups.
So, needless to say, there is an immediate need for a
community center in Savannah.
An LGBT Community Center will enrich the quality
of life for ALL citizens by inspiring a sense of pride,
wellness, responsibility and community among individuals
and organizations in the LGBT population. Practical
advantages include increasing coordination, eliminating
duplication, and establishing a common mission
and direction for the LGBT community. Outside our
community, it will increase public awareness, acceptance,
visibility, and understanding of the LGBT community,
including providing opportunities for learning, open
dialogues, and forums for discussion. Enhancing access
to resources by serving as the focal point for LGBT
information and referrals to local organizations will be
another major benefit—and all in an inclusive, welcoming,
and safe environment.

FCN Commentary
Chair’s Report: Discuss and Cuss
By Billy Wooten
Your new FCN board recently held its annual retreat, where
members “discuss and cuss” in a free-flowing forum. The
topics were varied and included new committees, possible
changes to the FCN newsletter, engaging new volunteers,
fundraising for the proposed LGBT community center,
and, despite no crystal ball, the future of FCN and LGBT
organizations in general. The LGBT world has certainly
changed, with full marriage equality, social websites, and a
younger generation that more readily accepts and appreciates
us. But there are still major issues in the workplace, houses of
worship, state houses, and schools that have to be overcome.
With your help and support progress will be made against
bullying, job discrimination, rogue legislation, and religious
indifference. But it takes all of us working together in an
ongoing effort to educate, repudiate, and advocate. Join us at
a meeting, volunteer, contribute to the newsletter; there are
many tasks that could use your help.
Letter to the Editor
Happy November Folks!
Pride season has come and gone. I want to take a
moment to thank the hard working folks on the Pride
Board 2015. Michael Wedincamp, Maria Waller, Regan
Drake, Rev. Dale Worley, James Farringer, Rob McCoy,
Alex Cheves, Jeff Gerstenblatt and Molly Talbot, I can’t
thank you enough for what you do and for putting up
with me one more year.
We had an extraordinary great time putting it together
and connecting the dots this year. It isn’t an easy
project folks. That is my most honest assessment of the
festival I can make. We all have jobs that put bread on
our tables and lives. The board members listed above
sacrifice time and energy to present a festival that the
entire Savannah LGBT community can be proud of and
be proud to bring their friends and family to.
We are very grateful for our sponsors, Bud Light, Don
Callahan Real Estate, Family First, Club One, Creative
Approach, Barefoot Wine, and Wells Fargo Bank.
These folks help us set a foundation that we can grow
from and with their support allow us to plan the event.
I hope you were pleased and proud of what we have
done.

I would like to recognize the volunteers that came early
morning to help setup, stayed late until the last cigarette
butt was picked up, and who worked non-stop through
the day, I am humbled by your smiles and generosity.
The entertainment was pretty all local, with the
exception of just a few. We did not reach out and bring
in a “headliner”--a leap of faith but it worked. We
knew we had eight strong entertainment groups and
they rocked the park all day long. Their love for the
festival and their support is reflected in the show that
they provided. Thank you!
This year the Pride Festival was recognized by the
mayor and city council. We were presented with a
proclamation recognizing the importance of the Pride
Festival to Savannah. Very humbled that in just 16
short years, we have grown into the third-largest
festival event in the city and that Savannah Pride has a
very strong relationship with the City of Savannah. The

Felicia Once Again Takes
Club One’s Center Stage
by Orlando Montoya
Like a lot of people in Savannah’s LGBT community, I
didn’t know anyone named Neal Scott before his August
passing.
But I knew of Felicia Hall (Felicia Adams when she
was married), a longtime Savannah drag show performer,
bartender and operator of Felicia’s nightclub in the late
1990’s.
The man and the woman were one in the same.
This September,
scores of people
who knew Neal
and Felicia,
gathered to
remember the
person, him and
her, at Club One,
where she often
performed.
“I thought she
was absolutely
one of the best
entertainers I’d
ever seen,”
said Club One
co-owner Cale
Hall. “She took
a lot of time and really looked the part and put a lot of energy
into the show.”
Cale Hall met Felicia in 1984 when she came to work for
the club. She also worked at the long gone Who’s Who
on Bay Street. She briefly fulfilled a lifelong dream when
she had her own club in the space that’s now The Distillery
restaurant on Liberty Street. Cale Hall described Felicia as
crazy and sassy, a true Southern diva who made people laugh.
Drag performer Gia Hall shared houses and apartments
with Felicia on and off for 34 years. Gia Hall said she was
working as a cocktail server at the Who’s Who when they
met. The pair became best friends, roommates and “drag
sisters.”
She remembered Neal, her roommate, an Armstrong
nursing school graduate and a man from the little country
town of Sylvania, as a quiet and calm person, someone who
was reserved and hard to get excited.
“That was her black and white, night and day because
when she was on stage, she was very commanding,” Gia Hall
said. “Her wildest number was a song by Mother’s Finest
where she’d come out in a black cat suit and crawl the
runway. Fire would be involved.”
All of this came as something as a shock to Neal’s family
out in rural Screven County. Neal’s younger sister, Heidi
Scott Harsha, said Neal started dressing as a woman before
he was 18. She thought it was fun. But others in the family
apparently didn’t.
“I don’t even think that
he realized just how
many people loved
and respected him,”
she said. “This here
tonight, this is just a
small sampling of his
friends and extended
family.”
Or as Gia Hall said,
“He would often tell me that family were those people in
your life who elevate you to be the very best that you can be
and always accept you for who you are.”
In that case, Neal had a very large family in
Savannah. Indeed, Neal had a son, Amari Adams, who
came to the Club One remembrance.
Neal’s “work family” also came. Neal was a nurse. Gia Hall
says it was only recently that he had come into some financial
means with a job as a nurse manager at Urological Associates
of Savannah on DeRenne Avenue. He loved it.
“He was excellent at connecting with people,” said coworker Buffy Boyd. “He always was able to find some
common ground to connect with them on. He was always
positive with patients. He always smiled at them. But that
was Neal.”
The Club One memorial was a cross-section of everyone
who knew Neal a.k.a. Felicia. I can’t fit in everyone’s

story. So perhaps I’ll close with an ordinary moment,
like the ones we share with people each and every day. It
comes from drag performer Dawn Dupree.
She remembered Felicia most from those moments before
a show when the performers were backstage at Club One
enjoying a calm moment before the lights shone on them.
“They always had a small television back there. And
Felicia and all of us would gather together and watch
the Golden Girls together before we’d go on for
the performance,” Dupree said. “Those are the kinds of
things that I remember most about her, laughing backstage
with her, doing shots together, just laughing and having
fun.”
It’s obvious that for many in Savannah, the words of
that show’s theme song, written by Andrew Gold, ring true
of Neal Scott (1965-2015). “Thank you for being a friend.”
FCN Business Member TailsSpin Chosen Pet
Retailer of the Year
Pet Product News International has chosen TailsSpin as
“2015-2016 Pet Retailer of the Year.” Born in Savannah,
TailsSpin has expanded to four stores in Savannah, Pooler,
Macon, and its newest location on Whitemarsh Island.
Jusak Bernhard and Jeff Manley, owners of TailsSpin,
attended the Awards Ceremony July 21 in Las Vegas.
“It’s an amazing honor to be recognized by our peers in
the industry” said Bernhard. “As TailsSpin is Savannah
born, we are doubly excited. For us, participating in our
surrounding community and providing excellent customer
service are the key reason of our continued success.
TailsSpin supports the community by raising funds for local
pet rescues and other non-profit organizations such as FCN,
as well as by working closely with the local government on
pet-related programs, such as the creation of dog parks.

Events
October First Saturday Social a Delightful Evening
It was a night fitting for a
Halloween kickoff - misty,
cool, a slight breeze stirring
up the ghosts and ghouls in the
eastside neighborhood of Scott
West. Also stirred up were the
attendees, talking about the
city elections and other great
un-pleasantries. The music of
Melvin Dean on the steel drums
also floated about, providing a
background for the fine food,
fellowship, and free-flowing
drinks. Joining the 90+ in
attendance were several of the local candidates, including G.
Lyn Taylor, David Self, and Travis Coles. See the photos on
Pages 16 and back page of this issue.
Always the “host with the most”, Scott shared tales of treasures
found at yard sales and entertained with stories from some of
the hundreds of events he helps plan and coordinate. He has
proven himself to be a true supporter of a better community
through a higher quality of living, contributing to that goal in
ways both small and large every day. You too can contribute.
Have you considered hosting a social or volunteering for a
FCN committee? We need more folks like Scott, willing to get
involved. Think about it!

“Diverse programming for a diverse community” is
more than a mantra, because the Savannah LGBT
Community Center programming WILL be diverse,
offering participation and volunteer opportunities for
the entire LGBT population. Imagine some of the many
possibilities:
• LGBT youth and young adult support groups,
spanning junior high, high school, technical school,
and college ages
• Support for LGBT homeless and those at risk of abuse
• Support for LGBT senior adults and those at risk;
LGBT Senior Center
• Minority and immigrant LGBT support
• Legal support and information unique to our
community
• HIV/AIDS testing and counseling/health initiatives
• Weekly/monthly social and educational activities
• Year-round planning/activities for PRIDE and other
LGBT festivals
• LGBT Small Business Group and LGBT Chamber
meeting space
• LGBT Visitors Center/welcoming site for LGBT
tourists; LGBT heritage tourism
• Archive. library, and and/or museum of LGBT history
in our area
• Relationship/marriage counseling
• Volunteer opportunities with LGBT organizations and
the broader community
So how can you help make an LGBT Community Center
a reality? Well, we are raising money to match a challenge
gift. A prominent local couple has made a substantial
pledge of $25,000 provided we match the gift and develop
a solid business plan for the community center. We have
begun to quietly reach out to friends and supporters to
determine their level of interest. To date, everyone we
have asked has agreed to consider a donation; several
have already indicated they will help meet the challenge!
To join that list of donors, please fill out the form on Page
X inside this issue, or to have a private meeting with
the FCN Chair or any member of our board about our
community center project, call 912-547-4543. Together,
we can do this!
