55 Years Ago This Month Our Club Started
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7 – GENERAL MEETING
Wear Something 50’s – poodle skirts, bobby socks, black leather, etc.
Knights of Columbus Hall, 103rd & Oklahoma Ave.
55 years ago this great club that has probably had 20,000 or more members over the years was founded. How it has changed the lives of its
members is virtually impossible to calculate, but countless wonderful things have certainly happened. When the Anniversary Waltz is played
about 9:15, dance with someone whom you met and became attached to because of the Vagabonds. Then enjoy the music of 1958 and other
50s goodies from our DJ Alan Graveen.
Special Food Choices: chicken breast in cream sauce, oven-browned potatoes, veggie, dinner roll, coffee, just $7. Or, chicken salad sandwich,
chips, pickle, coffee, only $4.50. Drink specials: Vagabond (Alabama) Slammer (Southern Comfort, Sloe Gin, Orange Juice,) $4; White Wine, $4

If your birthday is in August, we wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and will sing “Happy Birthday” to you at our meeting. We also ask those
with birthdays this month to bring a treat to share – DESSERT ITEMS ONLY: cookies, cake, brownies. Please place them on the Treats
counter in the meal room so that all can enjoy after the meeting at 9 o’clock.
Holistic Health Treatments and Alternative Methods
Wed., August 7, , Roundtable, 5:30-6:40 pm, KC Hall
Most people wait until they are sick or in
pain or acquire a disease before going to a
doctor. The potential remedy then might
involve prescription drugs with numerous
side effects, hospitalization, and maybe
surgery and a lengthy recovery. But what if
you could find holistic and alternative
treatments or preventive measures to keep
you from getting out of sorts in the first
place? Come hear Dr. Jose Vargas, a
former MD from Mexico who has now
become a holistic, alternative treatment
specialist at the Health & Energy Center
here. He will talk about alternative ways to
reduce or eliminate pain and handle
sickness, disease, and other maladies –
along with what to do to help prevent
having such problems in the first place.
You’ll be amazed to see and hear about the
new methods of treatment and prevention
that are now available through Dr. Vargas.
Questions? Ron Sonntag, 414-788-4907,
or ron@rspr.com. Dinner will be served
from 5 pm, so eat while listening.

Five Years Later and
Still Going Strong
t was five years ago on August 21, 2008,
that we held a Reenactment of the Founding
of the Vagabond club at the very location (the
Milwaukee Yacht Club) where our Vagabond
club began 50 years earlier to the day!
Present were 19 Charter Members from that
first year of our club’s existence. A grand
celebration of the 50th followed in September.
Some may have wondered if the club could
keep going and if it could keep up a
membership of well over 1,000 members.
Well, here we are, five years later, still with
over 1,000 members and still with a super,
dynamic, and vibrant club that members love
and new people want to be part of. Yes, the
club is still THE club, and now let’s join
together, celebrate, and toast another five
years of this great club being alive and well
for all of us to enjoy. At our August 7th
meeting, we’ll pay a special tribute to many
from our club when we play the Anniversary
Waltz and have those present who met their
wife, husband, significant other, or loved one
who’s also there come out and dance that
song together. Then we’ll celebrate more on
Aug. 9th at the Seven Seas’ Vagabond Fish
Fry, more yet at the August 21st Over The
Hump (our actual 55th anniversary date) and
culminate our celebration with our big 55th
Anniversary Dinner/Dance at Silver Spring
Country Club with a nostalgic and fun
program, meal, video memories, and lots of
visiting and camaraderie. All of you (singles
and couples) sign up because this is going to
be especially fun for everyone. After that,
we’ll get back to our everyday fun and
activities of the greatest club in the country,
setting the stage for another celebration in five
more years. Why? Because this great club
and its wonderful members deserve to be
celebrated. That’s YOU, so pat yourselves on
your backs, because you’ve made it this way!

55th Anniversary Dinner/Dance Celebration
Now Open
Friday, September 13, Silver Spring Country Club
The gala 55th Anniversary Dinner/Dance Banquet, as the highest
point of our 55th Anniversary Celebration, is now open. Cocktails start
at 5:30, dinner to follow, along with a wonderful, memory-filled
program. Then music by the large 19-piece Command Performance
Orchestra and dancing and visiting until near midnight. The evening
will also feature a dramatic return to yesteryear with an appearance by
the famous Greyhounds’ men’s singing group that became so popular
years ago on Vagabond bus ski trips (with the group actually named
after that famous bus company), and the singing of that famous
Hamburg song by Past President Lyle Thompson. Tickets for this
memorable evening are $45 per person (the same as was for the 45th
and 50th anniversary dinners). Send your checks, made out to
Vagabond Ski & Social Club, with a self-addressed, stamped return
envelope, to Lou Grubich, 1505 S. 124th St., #6, New Berlin, WI
53151. Enclose a note with your dinner entrée choice: Roast Sirloin
of Beef, Chicken Wellington, or Herb Crusted Tilapia Filet. If the event
is full, your check will be returned to you.
Vag 55th Anniversary 55-Mile Bike Ride
(or 27.5 shorter one)
Sat., Aug. 10, 9 a.m.
It’s the Vagabond 55th Anniversary this year, so to commemorate the
occasion, (why not,) a 55-mile bike ride (or half of that, 27.5 miles, for
others). Grab your bike, pack a lunch and drinks, and join the fun ride
along the new Interurban Trail from Mequon to Thiensville to
Cedarburg to Grafton to Port Washington, and a little further. Then we
turn around and come back. Shorter ride? Go 13.75 miles and return
to make 27.5. We’ll take off from Spanky’s Hideaway, 5208 W.
County Line Rd. (two blocks west of Green Bay Rd.), at 9 am. Bring a
bag lunch and some beverages. After the ride we’ll return to Spanky’s
or a nearby place for a bite to eat and celebration. Contact Event
Leader Ron Sonntag for more info, 414-788-4907.
