After the acquisition of Sierra MGM Transformer Company manufactures transformers in eight major categories: Transformer Company in 1982, MGM introduced liquid units to its product line. By 1990, MGM Transformer had grown to become the largest independent transformer manufacturer west of the Mississippi. To continue the growth of products within the transformer world, MGM Transformer Company opened a 125,000 square foot satellite manufacturing plant in 1991 for the production of 600V Special Design Dry Type Transformers: 9kVA to 10MVA 1- and 3-Phase 600V to 34.5kV K-Factor Ratings Retrofit Applications Dry Type Substation Transformers: 500kVA to 10MVA 5kV to 34.5kV Indoor and Outdoor Primary Load Interrupter Switch (optional) class general purpose lighting transformers. Presently, there are warehouse operations in major cities throughout the continental United States. The last two decades saw a significant growth in the SCR/VFD drives industry, as users have looked for ways to improve efficiencies to reduce power costs. MGM Transformer Company Liquid Filled Substation Transformers: 500kVA to 10MVA 5kV to 34.5kV Indoor and Outdoor Primary Load Interrupter Switch (optional) Dry Type Drives Isolation Transformers: 6, 12, 18, and 24-Pulse 15kVA to 10MVA 600V to 34.5kV Indoor and Outdoor has responded to this new demand with an engineering staff that specializes in the application and design of these sophisticated systems. Consequently, the company has become an established leader of drives isolation transformers. Located on a five-acre site just southeast of metropolitan Los Angeles, the manufacturing plant encompasses 120,000 square feet. Adjacent to the manufacturing plant is a separate 20,000 square foot facility, housing offices for administration, engineering and sales. Liquid Filled Drives Isolation Transformers: 6, 12, 18, and 24-Pulse 200kVA to 10MVA 5kV to 34.5kV Indoor and Outdoor 600V Class General Purpose Transformers: 9kVA to 1,500kVA, 3-Phase 10kVA to 500kVA, 1-Phase Special Design Dry Type Transformers Section wound Disk wound The section wound style is rarely used in industry due to higher cost vs. barrel or random wound. MGM as a standard uses this style on all 5kV class above 45kV BIL and 15kV class to Barrel wound 1,000kVA, and 60 to 110 kV BIL. Continuous disk or pancake wound style is very costly and not widely used. Due to its superior design criteria, MGM uses this method on 15kV class, above 1,000kVA and 60 to 125 kV BIL (150 kV BIL non-UL) The barrel wound style is the most common method in the industry for 600V and 5kV applications. MGM only uses the barrel wound method for 600V class and 5kV class, 45kV BIL maximum. Studies sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show that the typical loading of low voltage (600V and below) drytype distribution transformers averages around 35% of the transformers full load rating over a 24 hour period. NEMA TP-l established minimum efficiencies for 600V-class distribution transformers at 35% of the transformer’s full load rating. At 35% load, when compared to standard transformers, NEMA TP- I transformers are the most efficient transformer. The EPA adopted the minimum efficiencies set forth in NEMA Standard Single-Phase Efficiency Rated Capacity (kVA) Minimum Efficiency (%) 15 97.7 25 98.0 37.5 98.2 50 98.3 75 98.5 100 98.6 167 98.7 250 98.8 333 98.9 TP- 1 and incorporated them into their highly successful Energy Star® Program. The EPA estimates that the payback period for the difference in price between a standard 150˚C rise model and the NEMA TP-l model is only 3 to 5 years. The 7 Energy Star ® S everal agencies and local governments have mandated the use of NEMA TP-l compliant or Energy Star® labeled transformers. Section 161 of the Energy Policy Act of 1992 encourages federal agencies to procure energy efficient products. Additionally, Executive Order 12902 and FAR Section 23.704 direct agencies to purchase products that are in the upper 25% of energy efficiency. Many states have passed laws mandating the installation of NEMA TP-1 transformers as well. Massachusetts and Minnesota were the first to pass such laws. Recently, New York State adopted changes to its Energy Code that mandate installation of these transformers. California has likewise adopted legislation, Title 20, which requires all low voltage dry type distribution transformers manufactured on or after March 1, 2003 to meet the minimum efficiency levels set forth in NEMA TP-1. More states will surely pass similar legislation in the near future in anticipation of the passage of the 1992 Energy Act (House Resolution 776) which will require distribution transformers across the country to meet the NEMA TP- 1 efficiency standards. NEMA Standard TP-1, as well as most state and federal legislation, specifically excludes a broad range of transformers classified as "specialty transformers". Among the products excluded from the NEMA standard are: transformers rated less then 15kVA, drives transformers (Type MD transformers), autotransformers, non-distribution transformers (such as UPS transformers), transformers designed for high harmonics (such as K-factor rated transformers), machine tool transformers, sealed and nonventilated transformers (encapsulated transformers), transformers rated other than 60 Hz, and retrofit transformers. Check the specific legislation in your area for exclusions that are incorporated in your area. As an Energy Star® partner, MGM Transformer Co. is a leader in the marketplace with solutions that save on electricity costs while at the same time help to protect the environment. MGM Transformer Co. offers a complete line of both single-phase and three-phase dry type distribution transformers that meet or exceed NEMA TP-l efficiency levels. Models that comply with this standard bear the TP1 and Energy Star® symbol. The same options and modifications are available for NEMA TP- I transformers as are for the standard transformer offering; copper windings, special primary and or secondary voltages, 150˚C, 115˚C, or 80˚C temperature rise, stainless steel enclosures, low sound, etc. 8 NEMA TP-1 Standard Energy Efficiency Primary Voltage 34,500 Volts and Below Secondary Voltage 600 Volts and Below Voltage Liquid Rating Single Phase Dry Rating Single Phase 10-833 kVA Three Phase 15-2500 kVA Three Phase 15-2500 kVA Single Phase Efficiency kVA 10 15 26 37.5 50 75 100 167 250 333 500 667 833 98.4 98.6 98.7 98.8 98.9 99.0 99.0 99.1 99.2 99.2 99.3 99.4 99.4 kVA 10 30 45 75 112.5 150 225 300 500 750 1000 1500 2000 2500 Dry-Type kVA 15 25 37.5 50 75 100 167 250 333 500 667 833 Medium Voltage Low Voltage <60kV >60kV BIL BIL 97.7 98.0 98.2 98.3 98.5 98.6 98.7 98.8 98.9 — — — 97.6 97.9 98.1 98.2 98.4 98.5 98.8 98.9 99.0 99.1 99.2 99.2 97.6 97.9 98.1 98.2 98.4 98.5 98.7 98.8 98.9 99.0 99.0 99.1 kVA 10 30 45 75 112.5 150 225 300 500 750 1000 1500 2000 2500 Low Voltage 97.0 97.5 97.7 98.0 98.2 98.3 98.5 98.6 98.7 98.8 98.9 — — — 98.1 98.4 98.6 98.1 98.2 98.3 99.0 99.0 99.1 99.2 99.2 99.3 99.4 99.4 Medium Voltage 96.8 97.3 97.6 97.9 98.1 98.2 98.4 98.6 98.8 98.9 99.0 99.1 99.2 99.2 our satisfied customers.
