Now…let’s get started building your HexTreme! Assemb blyConfig gurationChoices At this point, you have e a choice in aassembly conffigurations. YYour HexTrem me can be either built in a + or X configurration. The p practical differences are relatively minoor in terms of how your HeexTreme flies and operates; however, the e assembly in nstructions arre different ennough to warrrant two disttinctly differeent assembly sections in th his manual. The + con nfiguration haas three landin ng gear and h has one of thee six arms pointing straigh ht ahead like aa +. This configuration is exxtremely good for aerial photography aand videograp phy because yyou won’t have an w when shootting pictures or video. You u will, howevver, annoying motor arm directly in your field of view m in your “firsst person view w” (FPV) cam mera as you flyy. This can bee somewhat most likely see this arm mary use for fllying your HexTreme is forr sport and yo ou aren’t shoo oting photos or distracting if your prim our HexTreme e comes equip pped with lon ng landing geaar legs – perffect for moun nting a GoPRO O or video. Yo similar camera + gimbaal to your HexxTreme. Tarot T‐‐2D GoPRO Brushless Camera Gimbal HexTreeme Assembled in the + Configu uration The X con nfiguration haas four landingg gear legs and has “openn space” pointing straight ahead in the center line of the copter as there arre two arms o on either sidee of the “open n space” – like an X. This configuration is go ood for “sport” flying where you will bee primarily ussing your “firsst person view w” (FPV) cam mera to fly you ur HexTreme. In this confiiguration youu will not havee a highly disttracting moto or arm in your field of vie ew. This configuration, how wever, mightt not be best for aerial pho otography or phy since you might have tthe front two landing gearr directly visib ble in your sho videograp ots. See diagrram below annd note that tthe diagram d does not show w the electronicc speed contro ollers (ESCs) ssoldered to th he power distrribution boarrd. Use the flat head screw wdriver to hold the nylon sscrew in placee and flip thee frame over o on its back an nd slide a nylon spacer ovver the screw. Then put th he power disttribution boarrd on the fram me passing th he remainingg screw area tthrough one of the holes o on the powerr distribution board. Attach a nylon nutt to affix the p power distribution board tto the frame – – hand tighteen at this poin nt just enough h to keep the nut in place but leave enou ugh room to w work with the e remaining sscrews, spaceers and nuts. Do the samee procedure e for the remaining five nyylon screws, sspacers and nnuts – therebyy attaching th he power distributio on board to the frame at ssix points. After you have aall six nylon sccrews, spacerrs and nuts attached, tighten the n nuts firmly bu ut do not overr tighten or y ou will strip tthe nylon threeads. See pictture below: Here is a cclose up imagge of how you u will attach tthe power disstribution boaard to the frame – again please note that the image do oes not includ de the wires o or the ESCs. NOTE: Th here IS a top aand bottom to o the power d distribution bboard. You w want the botto om of the pow wer distributio on board facing outward. The bottom o of the power r distribution board is side that has the heavy gau uge black and d red battery w wires soldere ed to it. Insurre that none o of the motor arm wires geet trapped u under the pow wer distributio on board whe en you tighteen the nuts. R Remember th hat these are nylon nuts and sscrews and if you over tigh hten these nu uts you WILL sstrip the nylo on threads. B Be sure to tigh hten the nuts ssnugly but do not use exce essive torque.. We have fo und it much eeasier, after aattaching thee first screw to aattach the seccond screw directly oppossite the first. After these two screws arre attached, tthe remainingg screws, spaccers and nutss are quite easy to install. U Use diagonal cutters to cu ut off the exceess threads of the nylon sccrews. This is a mandatoryy step or the bbattery comp partment will not mount correctly. Step3:Electron nicSpeedControlle er(ESC)C ConnectionsandW WireClean nUp What you u will need fro om the kit: Partially A Assembled Fraame from Ste eps 1 and 2 ab bove 5.5” Cable e Ties (55CT) Required Tools: None electronic spe eed controlleers (ESCs) have three blackk wires coming out You will notice that each of the six e of one sid de and three ““bundled” wires (brown, o orange and yeellow) comingg out the otheer side ‐ alongg with the b black and red wires comingg out the sam me side and sooldered to the power distrribution boarrd. The “bund dled” wires w will connect to o your flight ccontroller. Thhe black wiress coming off o of the ESC will connect to the corresp ponding three e black wires coming out oof each motorr arm. You will notice thatt the he ESC is a fem male connecttor and the black wire com ming out of the connector for each blaack wire on th motor arm m is a male co onnector. It d does not mattter which blaack wire of thee ESC conneccts to which b black wire of th he motor arm. Essentially, the three blaack wires goinng down the motor arm arre a kind of “extension cord” connecting each EESC to each m motor. Go ahead and connectt the each of tthe three blacck wires from m each ESC to a correspond ding set of three black wire es from each motor arm. NOTE: Maake sure that you connect the three blaack wires from m a specific ESC to a corressponding set of three blacck wires for a specific moto or arm. In other words – IINSURE that yyou do not acccidentally cross connect aa black wire frrom an ESC to o a black wire e on a differennt motor arm m. Each of thee six ESCs will control exxactly one mo otor. It is up to you how you u will route th he “bundled” wires to yourr flight contro oller. You can n use any avaailable wires to the m main upper pl ate. opening to route the EESC bundled w On the maain lower platte you will no otice a flat recctangular areea between eaach motor arm. This flat aarea is where yyou will attach each ESC to o the frame. You can eitheer do this with the supplieed 5.5” cable tties or you can n use strong d double sided tape. We reccommend thaat you use the supplied caable ties because you can th hen neatly tie e the three black wires into o the space bbetween the m main upper and lower plattes. See picturre below: NOTE: W When you conn nect the blackk wire from th he ESC to thee motor arm b black wire you u might noticce a small gap of exposed ccopper in the middle of the e connectors where they m mate. Be sure that when yyou cable tie tthe three blacck wires together that you u avoid havingg these expossed areas of eeach of the th hree wires in close enough p proximity to ttouch or you could have a n electrical sh hort. You can n either use aa small piecce of electricaal tape to elecctrically seal tthe gap or yo u can simply offset the connectors wheen you wire ttie them. See e picture belo ow. Also note, that you migght want to aavoid running the six ESC ““bundled” wirres that go to o the flight controllerr through the center hole iin the main upper and low wer plates beccause typically you will waant to position yyour flight con ntroller there e (precisely in the middle oof your HexTreme) and wirres running up through this hole will m make this diffficult to do. In nstead, simplyy run the bun ndled wires up through any of the other available ope enings in the main upper aand lower plaates. Below is aa picture of th he HexTreme with the ESC Cs mounted too the main lower plate. Step4:MotorsA Attachment u will need fro om the kit: What you Partially aassembled fraame from abo ove steps (6) Brushless Motors (M M980S) or mounting sscrews – 2 scrrews from each motor kit accessory plaastic bag (12) Moto Required Tools: Small Philips Head Scre ewdriver Loctite Th hreadlocker Blue 242 or eq quivalent Scissors to o open plasticc bags Remove aa motor and aaccessories baag from the m motor cardbo ard box. Opeen the accesso ories bag and d find two of the e larger Philip ps head screw ws. You will usse three of thhe smaller Phiillips head scrrews to attach the propeller mount to eacch motor in aa later step. W We will be atttaching the m motors at two points on each or on top of th he motor arm m with the mootor shaft basse sitting in th he large moto or motor. Hold the moto he motor arm m. Align two o of the screw h holes on the m motor with co orrespondingg screw holes on hole on th the motor arm. While holding the m motor in placce flip the HexxTreme over and pass a Ph hilips head screw had the screw w heads dippe ed in Loctite TThreadlocker Blue through h one of the laarge motor arrm that has h screw hole and fasten the screw to the motor. D Do the same ffor the other motor attach hment screw.. Repeat th hese steps forr the other fivve motors. Se ee picture bellow: You can, aat this point, connect the tthree motor w wires to the tthree motor aarm sockets sshould you ch hoose to do so. Remember, h however, thaat you will mo ost likely havee to change w which motor w wire goes to w what motor wirre socket during flight controller calibraation to insurre that the mo otor spins in tthe proper direction as dictated by the flight co ontroller requ uirements. Thhis usually sim mply involvess swapping tw wo of the three wires in their sockets due e to the nature of three phhase motors.
