A couple of times a month, my Nonno would take the bus and then walk several kilometres to till the soil in my mother’s garden. He spent hours picking weeds, planting flowers and tending to our vegetables. Stretched out like an emerald carpet, we had the nicest lawn on the block. My sisters and I were allowed to play out front but we were forbidden to walk on the grass. When Nonno was around, we’d run and tumble and inch along the perimeter of the lawn like we were walking a tightrope. One minor slip of the foot and he stopped and glared or shook his fist. I’d peek around corners and watch as he crouched, suspenders stretched across his sleeveless undershirt as he tended to a patch of grass or tamed the roses to crawl up the side of the house. By mid-summer, seven-foot-high tomato plants were surrounded by beds of lettuce and pears, cherries and plums swayed in the fruit trees. The backyard was a feast for the senses with the heady scent of sweet pea pods and tomatoes warm from the sun. It was a labour of love and an art that I’ve come to appreciate over the years. Even now, the crunch of a sweet cucumber or a salad with tomatoes still warm from the sun brings me back to those heady summer days. Advertise in our Fall Issue & get noticed! Give YOUR BUSINESS the benefit of premium exposure to our extensive targeted readership! B BARBECUE SEASON IS UPON US and I cannot wait to get started! The flower boxes are planted, the patio furniture is out, now we will keep our fingers crossed that Mother Nature sends some love our way. This summer we have decided to test our green thumb and plant some vegetables. Last year we were given a cherry tomato plant in a pot. It was such a success and required very little maintenance that this year we are going to try a few more edibles. I have scoured the Internet looking for appropriate vegetables to grow in pots for our zone, and now we are ready to take the plunge. How hard can it be, right? A few peppers, beans, tomatoes and of course, herbs. Hopefully, we can stay on top of the watering and they will produce some nice bounty. We will keep you in the loop. But in the meantime if you have any great tips, send them our way! One of our favourite things to do when summer rolls around is to spice up our décor. I change out the curtains to a light-weight linen, throw the heavy blankets into storage and bring out a couple of pretty throws. I also change up my pillows with fresh spring colours, storing the wool and velvet ones for the winter months. Decorating touches can make a world of difference, without having to spend a lot. If you are thinking of making any changes to your home, or simply upgrading with a few accessories this summer, think local. We love to shop local to support those in our community. Take a look at our resource directory to find everything you need. There are so many great places to visit, let us know if we have missed anyone you would like us to feature. Cheers! We liked the open space and the bigger property. We had a nice lot in our old home but we wanted more privacy.” A A friend recommended Belmonte Homes, and after connecting with owner Fausto Savonarota, they knew they had found a builder they could partner with. Luisa Maringola and partner Marisa Lupo, owners of Lumar Interiors first met the family over 20 years ago. “She called on us to help her with all the custom drapery for the home she was living in at that time. Over time, we eventually designed and provided custom furnishings, upholstery and drapery for every room in her home. We developed a wonderful working relationship,” says Luisa. When the family embarked on their new-build journey, they called on Luisa once again to assist in the design and furnishing of the new 10,000 sq. ft. space. “I like traditional and things that don’t go out of style,” says Virginia. “Modern can be beautiful, but I don’t want to replace things every year. I love neutral colours and things that are timeless.” Together, Virginia and the Lumar Interiors team discussed colour and style preferences and came up with a traditional look and feel for the home. “We were involved from the ground up,” says Luisa. They spearheaded choices on colours, finishes, custom drapery and furnishings, floor plans and accessories while taking into account the family’s lifestyle and how they’d be using the space. “The goal is to always help the client achieve the vision they have for their home.” Continued on page 20 ourhomes SUMMER 2014 | 19 home & builder After working with Virginia for many years, the design team was able to anticipate what colours, fabrics and styles would largely appeal to her, making the selection process virtually seamless. One of Virginia’s largest concerns was making sure the colours coordinated throughout the home. “There was a running joke with Virginia and her family while we were working on the design of her home,” says Luisa. “If Virginia wasn’t sure about something, her kids and husband would say ‘Call Luisa.’ I took that as a compliment, knowing she trusted the advice and guidance we offer her.” Virginia also says their symbiotic relationship with the builder helped achieve the beautiful end product they had envisioned. “Fausto was also very good when he suggested things,” she says. “He’d point out 20 | ourhomes SUMMER 2014 what was in and what might work. He’s a nice gentleman to deal with.” From the magnificent exterior, an oversize, solid wood door from Doorland Group Inc., opens and grandeur awaits. Inside the spacious entryway, elegance abounds with high ceilings and large marble tiles from Interstone Marble & Granite Ltd. laid on a diagonal by Global Tile & Contracting Inc. The entrance is flanked with a spacious living room and dining room. Rich gold details in the intricate mirror, custom drapes and glass coffee table blend with a fireplace mantel by Multi-Cast Design Inc. In the dining room, layers of millwork in the ceiling trim and deep crown moulding create a luxurious space to dine and entertain. A staircase with open risers leads to the upper hallway. ASK A DESIGNER OUR HOMES speaks to Luisa Maringola and partner Marisa Lupo, owners of Lumar Interiors. What do you love about design? We love working with beautiful fabrics, patterns and materials. When we get new samples, it’s like Christmas! We truly believe your environment affects you emotionally and psychologically. Making it comfortable and beautiful is important. Why do we wait for a two-week vacation to enjoy some beauty? We should smile every time we walk through the door. Our homes are havens. Let’s make them beautiful. What is the best part of starting a new project? The excitement the client feels when we start showing fabrics, colours, furniture selections – that is the best part. We always show two to three options or combinations of materials and we love seeing our clients get excited about one of them. Then, we build on that until it comes together. >ÀÃ>Ê>`ÊÕÃ> Chestnut-coloured hardwood from Weston Flooring Ltd. runs throughout the home and warms the space with a vintage and timeless look. The spacious kitchen, one of Virginia’s favourite spaces in the home, was custom designed by Villa Kitchens & Fine Cabinetry and houses everything a culinary aficionado can think of. Task lighting, funky red stools tucked into a granite-topped island and lots of space to store pretty kitchen treasures make it beautiful and functional. Candelabra-style chandeliers add elegance. Windows throughout the home from Ostaco Windows and Doors provide plenty of light, especially in the family room where the ceiling soars and the windows enhance the height and dimension of the space. The stately master bathroom gleams with roman columns, a large soaker tub, and finely honed marble and mosaic tile. Red window treatments throw a splash of colour into the mix. “My bathroom is just so beautiful,” says Virginia. Plumbing throughout the home was done by Riva Plumbing Ltd. Though Lumar Interiors is one of the most long-standing interior decorating companies in Richmond Hill, they started as a home-based business offering custom window treatments and eventually evolved to offer a full range of services. “We can provide as much or as little as the homeowner needs to complete their decorating project,” says Luisa. With a large library of decorating resources in York region, clients can find anything they need to suit their taste and budget. “We have established a loyal client base as we believe in building long-lasting relationships with our clients.” The result of their latest collaboration with Virginia speaks for itself. Although grateful for the growing inventory and 21st century layouts, many homeowners in these subdivisions lament their newly built homes lack personality. Sondra Manchisi, co-owner and design consultant at Woodbridge’s gift and home décor store, Arti & Mestieri, suggests no house has to be mediocre. “A builder’s house doesn’t have to be something just out of the box, something boring,” Sondra says. “You don’t always have the budget to own a custom-built home, but you can still make your place look different and unique.” Soon after moving into their four-bedroom, 3,000 sq. ft., newly constructed Woodbridge home eight years ago, Sondra and her husband, Robert, began the task of converting their generic, suburban house into a welcoming, one-of-a-kind space for their growing family. “We took most of the finishes the builder put in and removed them,” Sondra says. “We actually had the builder not put in some of the vanities. So they left them in the basement, and we’ve used them for the laundry room.” Sondra’s years of studying art, her training as a photographer and running a home décor store with her sister, Rosanne Valitutti for the past 17 years have all combined to foster her keen and creative eye. She encourages her customers and anyone interested in making their home unique to stretch their imagination. “I designed this shelf for this space because it’s a big hallway,” she says, pointing to her favourite feature in the home – a magnificent, custom-built, floor-to-ceiling bookcase. “We designed it and had a carpenter build it for us to hold books and collectables. People don’t always think to do something like this. They think they’ll put in a bench, put a table here, a mirror there, not usually bookshelves. Don’t be afraid to break some rules.” Standing in the wallpapered family room amongst coffee table books, throw pillows, vases, an area rug and a decorative mirror over the fireplace, Sondra demystifies the steps necessary to customize any home. “It’s not about hanging some pictures and you’re done. It’s about layering with carpets, artwork, wallpaper and trying to make it closer to what you are looking for, making it cosy and warm. All the lighting, draperies, wallpaper, furniture and accessories in my home came from our store, Arti & Mestieri.” Continued on page 32 ourhomes SUMMER 2014 | 31 feature TOP:Ê/ÀÊ>ÞiÀÃÊÌ iÊÜ ÌiÊ `}ÊÀÊÜÌ Êë ÃÌV>Ì°Ê ABOVE:Ê/ iÊ«Ü`iÀÊÀÊ Ü>ÃÊVÕÃÌâi`ÊÜÌ Ê>ÊiÜÊ Û>ÌÞÊ>`Ê} Ì}°ÊRIGHT: / iÊV iÀÀÞÜ`ÊyÀÃÊÀÕÊ Ì ÀÕ} ÕÌÊÌ iÊë>ViÊvÀÊ VÌÕÌÞÊ>`Ê>``ÊÜ>ÀÌ ÊÌÊ Ì iÊLÀ} ÌÊÌV i° 32 | ourhomes SUMMER 2014 Sondra considers lighting an important design detail and has paid particular attention to her choices for each room – even the mudroom. “Most people don’t put a high-end light fixture in their mudroom,” she laughs and indicates the room’s light fixture, “But we did. It’s a part of your home, so why just think of it as a mudroom and a place to dump your shoes and bags?” An easy way to add a striking touch to any room is to switch out the original lighting and incorporate chandeliers, pot lights and picture lights throughout. Marble tiles installed by Romari General Contracting and Jatoba Brazilian cherrywood hardwood from Frontier Flooring Inc., carry through the main and second floors providing continuity to Robert and Sondra’s home. White wainscoting, crown moulding and cabinetry against Benjamin Moore’s Acadia White walls offer an airy, monochromatic look. “I love whites and creams,” Sondra admits. “It makes a space look bigger, and you can’t go wrong with white. I find if you keep everything consistent, your home will flow nicely.” White kitchen cabinets from KCC Chooka Cabinets replace the builder’s cabinetry and have been further customized and enhanced with distinctive hardware, under cabinet lighting and pot lights inside the glass cabinet doors. A white subway tile backsplash, marble mosaic tiles above the stove and kitchen window and limestone countertops by Marble Trend are additional ways an otherwise average kitchen can be made to look extraordinary. “I didn’t want to simply stop at the stove, so we carried the mosaic tile around the perimeter of the kitchen window. That brings another special feature into the room.” Sondra suggests even small details will elevate an uninspired space and give it a look of sophisticated elegance. “People tell me they would never display their dishes,” she says. “Mine aren’t expensive, but I buy beautiful plates and beautiful cups and then I use them. If everything inside the cabinet is pretty, you don’t have to worry about hiding it. My dishes are all simple and white.” Continued on page 34 ÞÊÀi«>V}ÊÌ iÊLÕ`iÀ½ÃÊÌV i]Ê-`À>ÊÜ>ÃÊ >LiÊÌÊVÕÃÌâiÊÌ iÊë>ViÊÜÌ ÊÃÌÀ>}i]Ê `iÃ}Ê>`Ê>ÀV ÌiVÌÕÀ>Ê`iÌ>ÃÊÌ >ÌÊÌÊÞÊ Ê}`ÊLÕÌÊvÕVÌÊÜiÊvÀÊ iÀÊv>Þ° ourhomes SUMMER 2014 | 33 feature LEFT:Ê/ iÊÃvÌ]Ê `Ài>ÞʵÕ>ÌÞÊ vÊÌ iÊwà iÃÊ VÌÕiÃÊÊÌ iÊ >ÃÌiÀÊLi`À°Ê BELOW:Ê iÜÊ yÀ}]ÊVÕÌiÀÃÊ >`ÊÜ`ÜÊ ÌÀi>ÌiÌÃÊ VÕÃÌâiÊÌ iÊ >ÃÌiÀÊiÊÃÕÌi°Ê BOTTOM LEFT: ÊÌÌiÊ}À½ÃÊÀÊ ÃÊ>`iÊ«ÀiÌÌÞÊ ÜÌ ÊLi>`L>À`]Ê >ÊÕ« ÃÌiÀi`Ê i>`L>À`Ê>`ÊÃvÌÊ «Ê`À>«ið The couple upgraded the home’s bathrooms by replacing the existing flooring with marble tiles and adding higher end vanities, mirrors, lighting and fixtures to each space. Wall panels add depth and dimension in the foyer and hallways to provide yet another custom detail that makes this home stand out. A large framed painting set off with a picture light in the stairway draws the eye upward. Outfitted with collectables, artwork, custom drapery and chandeliers from her store, Sondra and Robert have also incorporated beadboard and custom shelving to create magical bedrooms for their two young daughters and a relaxing retreat for themselves in their master bedroom suite. A house, whether a new build or not, will only acquire a personality once the homeowner has added their individual touch and style to the space. Not being afraid to break a few design rules and using the resources at her fingertips, Sondra has created a distinctly unique home now bursting with personality. STO RY AN D PH O TO G R APH Y MEL AN I E R E K OL A A Attracting butterflies, bees and hummingbirds to gardens across North America, its colourful, fragrant flower heads are held high upon sturdy stems. Though its foliage is somewhat weed-like, going against my usual rule of thumb, the masses of eye-catching blooms vindicates its place in most garden circumstances. Just be sure to hide that weedy vegetation with some nice foliage companion plantings such as dwarf daylily, coreopsis or sedum. Coneflower Facts Commonly known as purple coneflower, and possibly Canada’s most popular native wildflower, Echinacea is simple to cultivate. Indigenous to the central plains of North America, it performs best in full sun but also adapts to partial shade situations. It is drought tolerant after it establishes. Most varieties are considered large by perennial standard, about 36-inches tall and 24-inches wide. But bear in mind, the plant’s height when blooming varies widely by 36 | ourhomes SUMMER 2014 Echinacea Purpurea “Raspberry Truffle” cultivar and can range anywhere from 12 to 40 inches. Echinacea petals are edible and can be made into a savory spread, added to fruit salad, or sautéed with onion to add to various recipes. Coneflower is a strong and resilient plant resistant to deer destruction and damage from most garden variety pests such as aphids, caterpillars, grasshoppers, Japanese beetles and whiteflies. The only exception is the Leafhopper. Though Echinacea is impervious to most sickness, Leafhoppers transmit a disease called aster yellows, which often causes the flowers to form abnormally and remain green. Echinacea are also susceptible to powdery mildew. Remedy For The Common Cold? Frequently cited for its medicinal attributes, it was aboriginals who dubbed Echinacea “snakeroot,” because its thick, black roots were used to treat snakebites. First Nations also used Echinacea as a cure-all for a wide range of other illnesses. UÊ Echinacea Purpurea “Raspberry Truffle”: This is a short and sturdy selection of coneflower with salmon pink blossoms held upon thick chocolate stems. I often prefer the shorter varieties, including Echinacea “Kim’s Knee-high” and “Echinacea Red Knee-high” as they take up less room and can be placed towards the front of the perennial border. Tomato Soup Since then, the healing properties of Echinacea as treatment for cold and flu viruses have become recognized world wide. Although the cure to the common cold seems forever elusive, and although the herb’s countless advocates claim that it possesses anti-viral and immune-boosting properties, there has been little scientific evidence to substantiate these claims. So Many Varieties To Choose From! The genus Echinacea was named after the Greek word “echinos,” which means hedgehog or sea urchin and refers to the prickly, spiky central cone of the flower. The old garden standby, Echinacea purpurea had proved to be very easy to hybridize. Recent cultivars produce a rainbow of delicious flower colourations and types consisting of single, double or quilled varieties in hues of magenta, orange, pink, purple, white, green and yellow. Some varieties even boast petals that change colour over time. Continued breeding breakthroughs will surely follow to keep up with the demand for these ever-popular garden perennials. Below are a few of my favourites. Melanie’s Plant Picks UÊ Echinacea purpurea “Magnus”: Though common, this original heritage favourite still makes my cut. Its magenta petals are held horizontally, making the blooms appear even larger. And with its rusty-orange centre, who says pink and orange don’t go together? Its showy blooms have a rose-pink centre with magenta, daisy-like surrounding petals. It’s another shorter, sturdy variety of coneflower that is easy to place, even where space is limited. UÊ Echinacea “Big Sky Sunrise”: Large and architectural, this elegant butter-yellow coneflower is a beauty to behold. Its five-inch blooms have an orange centre with petals that fade from yellow to cream with age. UÊ Echinacea “Tomato Soup”: Tomato Soup is a bright, tomato-red coneflower whose five-inch-diameter flowers feature slightly drooping petals with rounded, dark yellowish-brown centres. Tomato Soup is also one of the larger varieties of the coneflower family. As with all perennials, be bold and plant in groups with repetition throughout your garden to get maximum impact from this marvelous statement plant. Keep your Echinacea looking its best by deadheading regularly to extend its blooming period, and bring a Echinacea purpurea bouquet inside as they also make an excellent cut flower. In fall, leave your Echinacea standing as the seed heads provide winter interest to the often barren landscape. Plus they provide a food source for local songbirds. And if you haven’t yet already, why not experiment with the immune enhancing properties of this famous herb the next time you contract a cold. Science fantasy or science fact; you be the judge!
