PHOTOGRAPHERS’ BRIEFING
PLEASE READ THIS INFORMATION CAREFULLY
The safety lanes are dangerous zones in which it is very dangerous to circulate or stop.
Safety rules remind all those people to watch out and insofar as possible stand behind an FIA
fence.
1. TABARDS
All media working at the trackside or in the pit lane must wear a tabard with an ID number.
Tabards must be worn. Do not attach them to your belt.
Tabard Numbers must be visible at all times. Photographers must not wear camera backpacks or put
their own photo vests over the tabard.
2. SAFETY LANE ACCESS (Bugatti track)
Access only by:
 Park E (on the right-hand side of the track to the north of the pits)
 Sector 35bis (opposite the Module Sportif on the left-hand side of the track)
 Sector 35 (on the left-hand side of the track before the Ford corner)
3. CIRCULATION ON THE SAFETY LANES
Reminder: the Highway Code applies within the circuit.
- Helmets must be worn by drivers/riders/passengers (including the safety zones).
- Speed limited to 30 km/h on safety lanes and 10 km/h in the paddock area.
- Parking: it must be done in such a way so as not to hinder the passage of safety vehicles.
Herringbone parking against the fences is forbidden.
All 2-wheel vehicles circulating on the safety lanes must have an Organisation – All safety zones 2016
card for the event. Bicycles, motor bikes and quads are forbidden on the safety lanes.
Parking scooters and motorbikes, except those of the organisation, is forbidden in the FG parking
space (at the foot of the Module Sportif). Unauthorised vehicles will be removed immediately.
19
4. RED ZONES
There are several Red (forbidden) Zones on the Le Mans 24-Hours circuit. These are indicated on the
map page 17 (also available in the media centre). Please consult this map to familiarise yourself with
the location of these forbidden areas.
The red areas are transit areas. Stopping is forbidden.
They are shown by a painted line or barrier tape.
If a photographer is caught photographing in a red zone in a stationary position during the Test Day
or the race he/she will be immediately excluded from the circuit and will never again be accredited
for the Le Mans 24 Hours.
Even if an area is not classified as a Red Zone, you must make your own assessment of whether it is
safe to stand in that area or not. You must also obey the marshals’ instructions.
The Race Director can add Red Zones at any moment if he deems an area to be unsafe.
Photographers are asked not to congregate at a fixed point, which could cause problems in case of
emergency clearance.
20
5. WORKING TRACKSIDE
a. Safety barriers
YOU MUST HAVE A BARRIER BETWEEN YOU AND THE TRACK AT ALL TIMES WHEN THE TRACK IS
LIVE.
Touching, leaning on, or over the barriers are forbidden. You may not cross these barriers, or place
your cameras on them.
You cannot stand behind these barriers without prior authorisation.
In both these images the photographers in the green tabards are not obeying the above
instructions.
b. Earphones / ear plugs
During the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours, when the first Audi crashed, a photographer was seen who was
completely oblivious to what was happening behind him (we now know the identity of this
photographer). You must be aware of your surroundings at all times.
EARPLUGS: If you wear earplugs while working trackside you must ensure that you are aware of
your surroundings at all times.
RADIO: If you are listening to the commentary on a radio, use only one ear piece, not two.
The use of iPods and MP3 players while working trackside is strictly forbidden.
21
c. Stay behind the barriers at all times while the track is live.
During the same accident at Le Mans several photographers were seen in the gravel trap taking
pictures of McNish emerging from the wreckage of his Audi while the other cars were under the
safety car regulations. The track was still live! If any photographer is seen doing this during the Test
Day or the Le Mans 24 Hours, he/she will be instantly excluded from the circuit and will never again
be accredited for the Le Mans 24 Hours.
22
6. PIT LANE
The pit lane is a working area, and can be dangerous.
PIT LANE PASS: You may only access the pit lane if you have a PIT LANE pass.
Wear sensible clothing. You are advised not to wear shorts, skirts and open-toed shoes while
working trackside: these are banned when you’re working on the pit lane.
The pit lane is a working area and a dangerous environment and all media must wear fireproof
overalls and a helmet.
FIREPROOF OVERALLS MEETING THE FIA 8856-2000 STANDARDS ARE MANDATORY IN THE PIT
LANE
Anyone seen working in the pit lane wearing inappropriate clothing will have his pit lane access
withdrawn for the Le Mans 24 Hours.
No championship’s or sponsor’s logo shall appear on the clothing (it must be covered) apart from
those of the Le Mans 24 Hours and the FIA WEC. The name of the agency, TV station or publication
are allowed.
HELMETS MUST BE WORN IN THE PIT LANE
Helmet must be worn in the pit lane.
Avoid gathering around the same car. Remember that the drivers want to leave the pits as quickly as
possible after a stop. Bear this in mind and get out of the car’s way immediately!
Remain alert at all times. If someone is waving a pit board in front of you, a car is almost certainly
coming up behind you. Get out of the way!
Checking your photos - If you feel the need to check your photos on your camera please do so in a
garage. Do not look at your screen in the pit lane with your back to the traffic.
Tripods are not allowed in the pit lane. Monopods are.
7. WORKING TRACKSIDE
Be aware of your surroundings
8. PARC FERME
The Parc Fermé is out of bounds to the Media.
9. VIDEO
A photographer’s pass only grants you the right to take still photos; you cannot film without
permission.
23
10. SERVICE LANES
All service lanes must be kept clear at all times: they are emergency vehicle routes. If you have a
scooter pass do not park your scooter on the service lane. TV Camera Tripods must not block the
service lane accesses.
11. MARSHALS
Obey all instructions from the marshals and officials: they are there for your safety. In case of
problems, please do not attempt to solve them yourself. Report them to the Media Delegates.
12. START OF THE RACE
12:25 to 13:45: access to the pit lane for all media card holders (entry at bottom of pit lane, park F/G
- Module Sportif, or park E, or top of the pit lane). Access ends at 13:15.
13:00 to 13:45: access to the track for all people wearing bracelets whatever the card (entry at
bottom of pit lane, park F/G - Module Sportif, or park E, or top of the pit lane).
Access ends at 13:15
13:45: complete evacuation of the track.

all the others must evacuate the pit lane.

24
