BRINGING BACK AMERICAN LUXURY. 341 Bayside Dr. Newport Beach, CA 949.673.1771 www.BlackStarrFrost.com Travel Tips to Ensenada • The border crossing construction from US to Mexico is complete and it is efficient and quick. • The road from the Border to the Toll Road is complete and it bypasses downtown Tijuana completely. • The road from La Fonda to Ensenada is a two lane nondivided highway that takes you inland through some small towns and hills and valleys of farms and pastures. The road is well maintained and shows much recent activity, new paving and guard rails. It is a very pleasant drive. The Mexican officials have asked all unnecessary truck traffic to stay off this road to reduce traffic and delays. The detour takes about 15 or 20 minutes longer than before. There is a video of the detour at: http:// www.hotelcoral.com/alternateroute. • The detour brings you back to the highway before Ensenada so you will enter along the ocean as before. • On the return to the US additional border check lanes continue to open to make the crossing faster and more efficient. 5L^WVY[)LHJO :HU+PLNV ;PQ\HUH <:( 4,?0*6 9VZHYP[V 7(*0-0*6*,(5 ,UZLUHKH Map: Newport Beach to Ensenada 6 OFFICIAL RACE EVENTS Sunday, April 13, 11 am – 4 pm . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . HUNTINGTON BEACH LAGUNA BEACH MONARCH BEACH NAPLES NEWPORT BEACH LONDON HONG KONG PARIS NEW YORK PALM BEACH Maritime Adventures For all Youth of Orange County The Newport Sea Base is a place where sunlight, sailboats and sea lions are part of the day. With a commitment to developing character, their mission is to inspire a love for the marine environment in the hearts of youth of Orange County. Since 1937, the Newport Sea Base has provided fun and valuable educational maritime-based programs to all youth. Year-round, girls and boys learn oceanography, marine biology, environmental science, boating safety, dinghy and keelboat sailing, canoeing, kayaking, motor boating, and other aquatic-related subjects. Located on 400 feet of beautiful waterfront on Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, the Newport Sea Base provides easy access to the bay, ocean, and beaches and creates an ideal marine educational setting. youth programs Most people know that the Newport Sea Base provides fun, educational and accessible programming to youth and have done so for the past 77 years. But, what they usually don’t know is that it is open to the public, to girls and boys, to scout and non-scouts, a sailing, aquatics and educational facility for all. Sea Base programs are offered to the general public and are intended to Shana Bannert is the Executive Director of the Newport Sea Base, located at 1931 West Coast Highway in Newport Beach. 8 increase understanding and appreciation for the marine environment by directly involving participants in thoughtprovoking and dynamic hands-on activities. The Newport Sea Base offers classes that run all year round. Some popular classes include “Take a Kid Fishing!,” “Kayak Krusin’,” “Family Stand Up Paddleboarding,” “Family Sailing,” “Seamanship” and “Spinnaker Sailing.” SEA SCOUTS Sea Scouting is designed for young men and women, who have graduated 8th grade through 20 years old. This life-changing opportunity allows youth to sail the California coastline and farther, make friends that will last a lifetime, build leadership abilities and resume, become a steward of the ocean through community service, and compete in skills competitions and sailing races. Newport Sea Base is home to three Sea Scout Ships: the coeducational Tritons and Renegades, and the all-male Del Mar as well as the Chapman University Crew Team, Chapman University Sailing Team and Corona del Mar High School Sailing Team. SCHOOL FIELD TRIPS By being a “scientist for a day,” students learn about the species that live in the harbor, how they have adapted for survival, and how they are affected by their environment. Each grade experiences two different rotations of activities. Every year they return they have an entirely unique experience. The program is based on State of California Content Standards. A hands-on environmental education program will immerse your students in a fun-filled day of science activities and enable them to enjoy the wonders of the Newport Bay waterfront. The site is provided courtesy of the Orange County Board of Supervisors and operated by the Orange County Council, Boy Scouts of America. A shining example of what a privately funded and publicly accessible facility can do, the Newport Sea Base counts an overall attendance of more that 20,000 per year. The success of the Newport Sea Base has been made possible through the generous contributions of many dedicated donors. The Newport Sea Base office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Summer programs are offered Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Weekend programs take place Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. newportseabase.org Light Air Sail Trim Unlocked It doesn’t matter if you are a world champion or a total beginner. We can all learn a little more about sail trim. Every Newport to Ensenada Race (N2E) is going to be sailed in light air at some point… so grab a drink of some sort, sit back and soak up a few tips from Ullman Sails that you may find useful this year. Light Air 2 – 8 Kts Light air upwind sailing is something that is commonly overlooked in preparation for the N2E. Something that seems unlikely as we all dream about flying spinnakers all night towards Ensenada. The reality is though that a southerly breeze is likely at the beginning of the race and also in the early morning hours. Knowing how to maximize your speed during these times can be the difference between being on the podium and watching from the peanut gallery. The most important thing to remember is there are no hard and fast rules. Whatever works for you and your boat will not be the same for everyone. The only thing that remains the same is that boat speed makes you look good. We can all point straight up wind and not go anywhere but in light airs the people who move are the people who win. Sail choice is the hardest part. Do you want your 155% genoa or drifter? Usually if boat speed is over 2kts then you want your Genoa up. Adjustments should be made gently, the aim is to improve the flow. Not to stop it and start it again once the sail is set. Keeping crew weight low and forward is the norm in these conditions but try to keep it compacted together as well. Most hull designs will have a lower wetted area with this weight forward approach. Boat speed makes you look good! We can all point straight up wind and not go anywhere but in light air the people who move are the people who win. Many helms like to drive from the leeward side in these conditions. Sitting low by the water can mislead you into thinking you are going fast. It can help the driver keep the bow down though and this is a fantastic technique in the N2E. Headsail 1. Backstay Eased. This allows the forestay to sag inducing more fullness in the headsail. 2. Luff Tension. eased allowing the sail to sit as full as possible to its design shape. Typically some small creases may form in the luff. Don’t worry, this is fast ... 3. Jib Car. The relationship between car and sheet is imperative. Moving the car forward makes the sail fuller in the lower section. The sheet tension will control the twist in the leech. In light air you are looking for shape low and twist in the leech to keep air flowing onto the mainsail. Mainsail 1. Backstay Eased. Mast as straight as possible making the main full. 2. Luff Tension Eased. Again some small creases are nothing to worry about. 3. Outhaul Eased. Typically you should be able to get your hand easily between the boom and the sail. 4. Leech. The aim is to keep the telltales flying to keep flow across the mainsail and therefore drive. Tensioning the leech will allow you to point but may lead to stalling the main. Keep it on the fast side of too tight is our advice. The Newport Harbor Yacht Club was host of the first race, called at the time, the Governor’s Cup. A total of 117 boats competed in the first 125-nautical mile race on April 23, 1948. With winds estimated at 25–35 knots, only 65 boats finished the race that year. Fast-forward to 2014, and the Yacht Race remains one of the most popular and coveted regatta races on the West Coast with hundreds of worldclass vessels competing for the more than 40 trophies and awards. With an Photo: Jim Collins emphasis on camaraderie as well as competition, the cup was later renamed the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race and quickly began to attract thousands of well-known racers, fun-seeking novices and celebrities from around the world. People such as movie producer Milton Bren, well-known actors Buddy Ebsen and Humphrey Bogart, Walter Cronkite, comedienne Vicki Lawrence and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Paul Conrad have raced alongside worldclass skippers like Dennis Conner, Bill Ficker and Dave Ullman. In 1983, a record 675 boats entered the race, and with 400 to 500 boats competing every year, the colorful race has earned the title “world’s largest international yacht race.” In 2009, the race started before spectators on Balboa Pier instead of just outside the entrance to Newport Bay. The benevolent breeze allowed Doug Baker’s Magnitude 80, an Andrews 80 from Long Beach, to set a race record for monohulls of 10 hours 37 minutes 50 seconds—7 minutes 3 seconds faster than the record of 10:44:54 set by Roy E. Disney’s Pyewacket III, a Reichel/Pugh 77, in 2003. The multihull record of 6:46:40 set by the late Steve Fossett’s 60-foot Stars and Stripes catamaran in 1998 remains intact as the only boat ever to finish before sundown. In 2013, less than 2 minutes separated winners of the Maxi class. Tom Aiken, of the St, Francis Yacht Club in Sausalito, CA, led his crew and his bright blue Reichel/ Pugh 52 vessel named “Meanie” to win both the President of United States and President of Mexico trophies for Maxi class. Meanie was not the first Maxi to reach Todos Santos Bay in Ensenada. Bob Lane’s “Medicine Man” finished less than 10 minutes ahead of Aiken, but the Andrews 63 yacht hailing from Long Beach was handicapped six seconds a mile due to the fact that Medicine Man had won the President of United States Trophy in 2012. After the corrected time, Meanie finished with a time of 15 hours and 29 seconds, and Medicine Man finished 15 hours, 2 minutes and 14 seconds. Watch as history will be made once again as the 67th Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race launches its 125-mile race from the Balboa Pier in Newport Harbor to picturesque Todos Santos Bay in Ensenada, on Friday, April 25. romero’s mexico service Required Port Entry & Insurance • Boats & Autos – Required Mexico Documents • Crew List • Fish Permits • Temporary Import Permits • Mexico Liability Insurance • Up-To-Date Information 124 Tustin Ave., Ste 107 • Newport Beach, CA 92663 (949) 548-8931 • romeros@pacbell.net www.marinersins.com Setting Sail in Newport Beach By Deirdre Michalski W ith lovely weather as its beacon, and ten miles of pristine coastline, posh Newport Beach is a flurry of activity year-round. Hill, II MAYOR PRO TEM Edward D. Selich COUNCIL MEMBERS Keith D. Curry Leslie J. Daigle Nancy Gardner Michael F. Henn Tony Petros As Mayor of the city of Newport Beach, I would like to extend my whole hearted endorsement and support to the Newport Ocean Sailing Association (NOSA) for the 2014 Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race. For the last 66 years, this race has been an integral part of our city’s rich and colorful history. Race enthusiasm along with the number of entries continues to be strong and we anticipate approximately 300 boats, 2,000 racers and more than 5,000 spectators participating in this year’s race. The race provides a wholesome, family activity for both spectators and participants alike, increasing tourism, promoting friendly relations with our Mexican neighbors and bringing additional revenue into the city of Newport Beach. This historic race attracts coverage from local, national and international media. In the past years, both ESPN and OLN have featured the race as one of the premier regattas on the West Coast, garnering national television recognition. The race has also been featured on NBC Nightly News. Targeting more than 30,000 affluent sailing enthusiasts and business professionals, NOSA creates additional positive exposure for the City through direct mail, local and national print media, signage, publications and pre-race events. I would like to also recognize and thank the many sponsors of the world’s largest international yacht race, and I look forward to many more years of classic ocean racing with the Newport Beach to Ensenada International Yacht Race. Sincerely, The Newport Ocean Sailing Association (NOSA) was founded in 1947 and has grown to become the organizer of many of Southern California’s traditional boat races. The organization has a rich history of race sponsorship under the stewardship of its presidents and committees. 2014 NOSA OFFICERS Commodore: Chuck Iverson Vice Commodore, Race: Jerry Moulton Vice Commodore, Administration: Dave Shockley Junior Staff Commodore: Jim Jackman Chief Financial Officer: Joe Baiunco Chief Marketing Officer: Peter Bretschger Corporate Secretary: Nina Manning 2014 NOSA DIRECTORS Julie Albright Joe Baiunco Peter Bretschger Doug Campbell Gator Cook Bill Gibbs Toby Jackson Tom Kennedy Jerry Shandera 2014 COMMITTEE CHAIRS Jerry Moulton, Race Chairman Patty Cook, Race Operations Susan Heinz, Start Line Carlos Avila Escoto, Honory Staff Commodore and Mexican Liaison Judy Foster, Executive Secretary Joe Biaunco, Headquarters Chairman Toni Baiunco, Hospitality Co-Chairman Lynn Drury, Hospitality Co-Chairman Mark Townsend, PRO Kim Kymlicka, Protests Lloyd Clauss, Packets Peter Bretschger, Entry Chairman Peter Glick, Finish Line David Garcia, Trophy Leslie Richter, Photography Toby Jackson, IT Laurie Morrison, Public Relations Peter Bretschger, Marketing Ralph Rodheim, Sponsorships Newport Ocean Sailing Association PO Box 7485 | Newport Beach, CA 92658 info@nosa.org Phone: 949.644.1023 | Fax: 949.266.8540 newporttoensenada.com 17 Letter from the Mayor of Ensenada Letter from the Ensenada Chamber of Commerce President Ensenada, B.C.
