Benefit4Kids recently held our annual June
Fundraiser “The Pig Pen Ranch’s 12th Annual
Amy Pray Benefit4Kids Outdoor Weekend” on
June 13th & 14th 2009. This event started out
with the threat of rain, but that held off, and
the weekend turned out to be better than
ever! Although attendance seemed to be
down some from past years, which can be
contributed to many factors, this did not stop
the energy and enthusiasm of those there to
support our cause!
We would like to thank each and everyone of
you that had any part in making this years
“Outdoor Weekend” such a success! We don’t
want to miss anyone,
so we will group everyone under the general
term
of
“Volunteers”,
and
sincerely hope that
you know who you
are and/or what you
did to help kids at this
fundraiser! While it
takes alot to put on
this event, everyone
came together and
did their part to make
it the success that it
was. Thank you to all
the volunteers who
helped with various
parts of the weekend, from the planning
stages all way up through clean up late Sunday night! It takes the involvement and support from everyone that attended, and lent a
hand in any way, to make this and any event
Benefit4Kids holds or attends a success!
We would also like to thank the numerous
sponsors, donors, businesses, and organizations that helped us achieve a positive outcome to help the numerous kids we have
awaiting an “Outdoor Wish” right now! Without all of this, there is no way this fundraiser
would be a success, and still going strong 12
years after it first started!

Al Baggett and Steve Hearing made the trip to join the
West MI Fishing League for
their Dream Weaver Salmon
Fishing Tournament in Muskegon. Once again this group
pulled off a great event.
There were 44 boats entered
and 42 actually fished, with
many limits of fish caught and
everyone having a great
time. When all said and
done from registration, general donations, raffles ticket
sales, and merchandise sold,
we were given a total of
$5,666.00 from this event.
This group of fishermen are
amazing and once again,
despite the economy, guys
showed up and spent money
while having a great time
fishing to help Benefit4Kids!
Everyone there knew what the
reason was that they were
fishing for that day and everyone had a smile on their
face, even the one boat that
didn’t land a single fish!
Over in Bay City, there was
the Annual Pig Gig Festival.

As I sit down to write this, I am thinking back over what has taken
place in 2009, and I am overwhelmed at the generosity and tremendous support we have received. This has been one of our
busiest years! Benefit4Kids is thankful for the many fundraising
efforts in 2009, and are pleased to again have helped so many
wonderful children.
This year, to date, B4K has sent 4 kids on their Outdoor Wishes,
and we have another 6 scheduled to go. We will carry over into
2010 with six more trips already in the works, and the applications just keep coming! We are honored to be able to provide
these wishes! However, with the average trip cost now being
$3500.00, we are in need of your support and fundraising ideas
in order for us to continue. As we have said over and over, B4K
is nothing without your support and contributions. Our Board, of
all volunteers, are becoming a bit overwhelmed with the mounting duties required to keep this organization going - We need
your help!!
“How can I help?” you may be asking yourself. We need people all over this country to spread the word about B4K, introduce
our programs to your communities, and to help make sure we
have adequate funds to grant every approved wish that we receive.
Would you please consider becoming active in our fundraising
efforts? This can be accomplished in many ways: contact your
local sportsmen clubs, church groups, outdoor related organizations, and plan a fundraiser to benefit the Outdoor Wish Program. A few examples of fundraisers that can help Benefit4Kids
are: Shotgun/Archery shoots held at sportsmen’s clubs, fishing
tournaments, employer provided payroll deduction programs,
charity programs, memorial events (runs, walks, etc), the list is
endless….. Benefit4Kids could certainly use your help, and appreciates your consideration to become an active volunteer.

30th 2010. This event sells out every year, so please get your
tickets early! I am looking forward to seeing everyone at Perch
Point, our great host for the banquet, and wish you all a happy

Wish Kids Update
Kaitlyn Hadden from Ohio – Kaitlyn suffers from Tuberous and Sclerosis. Kaitlyn
has always wanted to swim with the dolphins, and B4K made that possible in mid
July 2009 with a trip to Discovery Cove, in
Orlando Florida!
Dalton Smith from Illinois – Dalton has
Chronic Kidney Disease & also had a kidney transplant in December 2008. Dalton
and his mom traveled to Buena Vista Colorado in late July 2009 to go white water
rafting in the Rocky Mountains with The Adventure Company.
The North West Town’s Sportsmen’s Club,
along with Ron Salee and his group of volunteers, from Illinois sponsored this trip.
Kevin Hertz from Michigan – Kevin suffers
from an inoperable brain tumor and has
had many recent surgeries. Kevin’s wish
was to go salmon fishing in Alaska and B4K

made this request a reality in early August
2009, with the help of supporter and volunteer, Tami Murray from Alaska. Tami was
B4K
awesome, and also secured another trip for
one of our wish kids this year. This trip included a stay at Early’s Fishing Lodge on the
Kenai River, a visit to the Alaskan Sea Life
Center in Seward, and a Prince William
Sound boat tour!
This trip was sponsored by The West MI
Fishing League, through their 2009 Dreamweaver Salmon Fishing Tournament and Dr.
Paul Chuba.
Daric Rupp Jr. from New York – Daric
suffers from a severe form of Cerebral
Palsy. Daric’s dream was to go Antelope
hunting out west, and with our help, that
dream became a reality for Daric in late
August 2009! Daric traveled to Routier
Outfitting in South Dakota to hunt with
Randy Routier with a crossbow!
Daric’s trip was possible with the help of
Routier Outfitting and Ten Point Crossbow;
they donated a hunt and a Titan crossbow
to B4K, which Daric used on his trip.
Tanner Lindberg from Illinois – Tanner has
been diagnosed with Perthes, which is a hip
disorder affecting his overall motor skills.
Tanner loves to hunt, and his dream was to
go bear hunting out west. With the help of
Ridgerunner Outfitters in Idaho, B4K made
this dream come true in late September
2009!
This trip was made possible by Ridgerunner
Outfitters, and sponsored by Ron Salee,
and his team at The North West Town’s
Sportsmen’s Club
Alanna Hendrix from Michigan – Alanna
has a rare form of T-cell non- Hodgkin’s
lymphoma. Alanna has always loved the
water and dolphins, and her wish was to
interact with them. Alanna will be traveling
to Discovery Cove in Orlando, Florida to
swim with the dolphins in early October
2009.
Hunter Rogers from Tennessee – Hunter
lives day to day with arthorgyrposis, scoliosis, kyphosisi, and asthma. Hunter would
love nothing more than to swim with the
dolphins, and B4K is making this possible
for him in mid October 2009 also at Discovery Cove in Orlando, Florida.
Tanya Strong from California – Tanya
suffers from brain and spinal tumors and
has a big interest in Falconing and would
love to experience this first hand. Although
a vegetarian herself, she understands the
chain of command in the animal kingdom.
B4K is more than happy to make this possible for Tanya, and she will be traveling to
Michigan in mid October to do just that!
Tony Bonofiglo from Michigan – Tony has
cerebral palsy, and is unable to walk, and
uses a key pad from his wheelchair to com-
municate with people. Tony would like to go
swimming with the dolphins as well, and
B4K will make sure that he and his family
travel to Discovery Cove in Orlando Florida.
This trip will be taking place just prior to
Christmas 2009.
Future Trips in the works…..
Kyle Harris from Michigan – Kyle is currently in remission after battling Hodgkin’s
Lymphoma for most of his life. Kyle loves to
hunt and has always wanted to go after
big game, and specifically a brown bear!
B4K is currently working on securing a trip
for Kyle sometime in the fall of 2010.
Eric Bean from New Hampshire – Eric suffers from Cerebral Palsy, seizure disorders
and respiratory distress. Eric loves the water and the idea of swimming with the dolphins! B4K is currently working with the
family on dates to send Eric to Florida to
experience his “Outdoor Wish”, and will
make this all possible once these few details
can be determined!
Suji Durci from Michigan – Suji has Moebius Syndrome which is a neurological disorder. Suji loves to fish and is thinking about
a deep sea fishing trip down south. B4K
will see that Suji lives her outdoor wish, once
she makes her final decision.
LeeAnn Magnan from Michigan – LeeAnn
suffers from a brain tumor. LeeAnn loves
the water and dolphins, and has always
wanted to interact with them. She is going
late October to Orlando, Florida to Discovery Cove.
Johnny Neville from Michigan – Johnny
has Cerebral Palsy, with major learning
disabilities and seizure disorders. He is
going late December to Orlando, Florida to
Discovery Cove .B4K

Northwest Towns Sportsman’s
Club is a social organization,
formed and participated in by
sportsman with common interests in hunting, shooting, fishing, and boat related activities.
Meetings are the first Tuesday
of every month at the American Legion Hall, Post #208 in
Arlington Heights, IL. Meeting
programs take a variety of
forms. Guest speakers cover
such timely topics as dog training, boat safety, hunting, fishing, and shooting. Meetings
also feature special attractions
from time to time: steak fry,
holiday dinner, fish & wild
game dinner, smelt fry. Most
important, meetings are a time
to see friends and enjoy camaraderie and stories. A popular
segment of each meeting is the
time when members share
hunting and fishing success
stories.
Annual trips organized by club
members consist of a variety
of fishing trips, trap and sporting clay shoots, and a wide
selection of different game
species hunts. Other annual
events members look forward
to are the Anniversary Diner
and the Father Son/Daughter
Christmas party.
Believing in the “pass it on’’
philosophy, NWTSC not only hosts
shooting and fishing clinics for
teens and young adults, but
also taken some out for their
first hunting or fishing experience. The neediest of those
are terminally ill children and
children with life-altering illness. Thus, we have partnered
with Benefit4Kids to raise
money to send kids on outdoor
trips of a lifetime.
NWTSC also sponsors Boy Scout
Eagle projects dealing with
conservation along with other
projects aimed at improving
the environment and habitat
for fish and game. NWTSC members participate in the Northern Illinois Conservation Club’s
Annual Youth Event teaching
rifle shooting, shotgun shooting,
and archery.

In March 2008, while watching
an incredibly moving TV show,
I found myself thinking about
my Sportsman’s Club. In the
club, there is a very diverse
group of good people that,
with the right guidance, could
do some really great things. I
spent the next few weeks formulating a plan and made a
presentation at our next board
meeting. My original thought
was to start our own organization to help terminally ill children. However, during our
discussion, the board felt that
looking into other organizations already doing valuable
work would aid us in reaching
our goal.
At the original
board meeting, the board also
gave me permission to start
raising money.

Volunteers and Fundraisers Needed
As Benefit4Kids continues to grow we find
ourselves busier and busier with just not
enough time to get everything accomplished. In order to continue meeting the
demand, we are in need of volunteers to
not only spread the word about Benefit4Kids in their area which will allow us
to reach out to more and more kids, but
we also need others with the dedication
and motivation to organize and run a
fundraiser with proceeds raised being
donated to Benefit4Kids, or work in conjunction with your local connections
(sportsmen’s clubs, church groups, co
workers, state hunting/fishing organizations, etc) to raise funds via any legal
method and donate the proceeds to
Benefit4Kids which will allow us to continue granting the “Outdoor Wish’s” of
terminally ill and/or life limited children
nationwide!
Examples of what has been done in the
past:
-Fishing League in West MI hosting a
large fishing tournament 2 years in a row
now, with proceeds going to Benefit4Kids.
Over $10,000 has been donated in only
2 years from this event
-Sportsmen’s Club around Michigan hosting shotgun shooting events or archery
events at their clubs with proceeds going
to Benefit4Kids. About $8,000.00 has
been raised total from various events such
as this in the past few years alone.
-Golf Outings set up and held by others,
with proceeds raised being donated to
Benefit4Kids.
$6,500.00 has been raised in only 2
years through these types of events.
-Various businesses and corporations allowing employees to donate a percentage of their paychecks into funds which
are set up for charities.
About $3,500.00 has been donated
through various programs like this
-Memorial fundraisers set up for someone, in which a percentage is donated to
charities like Benefit4Kids.

$2,500.00 has been donated through
these types of programs
The ideas are endless, but the fact is, we
desperately need your help in making
sure we always have adequate funds to
continue granting the “Outdoor Wish’s” of

I found an organization out east, filled
out an application, and sent it to them.
After five or six weeks with no answer, I
started looking elsewhere. During that
time, I went to a good friend, Jerry
Tepps, at Gander Mountain Kenosha and
explained what we are working toward
and where the money would go. Jerry’s
help was over whelming. Not only were
they willing to help with discounts on raffle items, but they were also willing to let
us raise funds in the store. They gave us
permission to either cook and sell lunch
outside or set up an in-store raffle. We
chose to set up the raffle. To begin with,
we bought a Winchester X-3 and raffled
it at regular club meetings. One hundred
$20.00 tickets was our set goal, and,
after a couple of meetings and events,
we were sold out of tickets. We made
around $1,350.00 on that one gun alone.
At that point, we were off and running.
The club member who won the X-3 was so
thrilled with his new gun that he donated
a once fired year old Mossberg with two
barrels. The stage was set for raffle
number two!
At the regular meeting, we had a sign up
for those who wanted to become committee members. At our first committee
meeting, we discussed who we were going to work with and the need to search
for other groups. One of our committee
members gave me information on Benefit4Kids. Several days later, I found a
phone number and called what I thought
would be an answering machine for me to
leave a message. To my surprise someone actually answered.
It was Al
Baggett, President of B4K. We had a
great conversation, and we talked about
our goals with Northwest Towns Sportsman’s Club, Benefit4Kids, and where we
could work together. I felt we both left
the initial conversation feeling very optimistic about our future together. Al also
invited us to the annual Amy Pray event,
which I was able to go to along with
three of my children. All four of my children have learned at an early age how
rewarding it can be to volunteer to a
worthy cause. During this first year, I
have had some very special moments with

With them at the event, they were given
use of a pellet gun range. Along with this
and some raffles, they were able to raise
$479 for B4K. A big Thank you to John
Gehringer, Scott & Lisa Paige, Dean Piggot, Lenny Wojtyna, Melanie, Whitney,
Ryan, & Ray Jacobs, Bob Kochanny,
Steve Gary, Jerry & Kim Stevens, Kim's
Mom, Austin Butterfield, Lisa Gehringer,
Kennie Stevens and of course Andy Gehringer.
In downtown Linwood, again Linda and
her crew attended the Pickle Festival.
each of my kids that I never would have
experienced had we not become involved
with B4K. We were very moved by what
we saw at this event and left there knowing that we could help. Al filled us with
brochures and a DVD showing success
trips to start our in-store raffles. Upon
our return, I contacted B4K’s printer and
ordered a banner that we would put on
the front of our raffle table. We purchased a Browning Gold shotgun and a
range finder and started our in-store
raffles. We try to get someone to the
store every weekend, and it is going
great! The employees have all become
good friends with us, and they support
what we are doing with their hearts and
wallets.
Over our first year, we have worked on
many different ways of raising money.
At all our special events, we are able to
work in a raffle, silent auction, or a card
blitz. The members have been extremely
supportive in all aspects of this endeavor.
We have had members donate items,
give back items won, and continue to buy
raffle ticket after raffle ticket. The support at times can be over whelming. You
know you are doing the right thing when
you get this kind of support!
We returned to the annual Amy Pray
event this year with a small surprise. As I
recalled our first visit, I remembered
watching Al surprise many people. This
time, I felt it was fitting to turn the tables.
The kids and I brought a six-foot check
for $ 7,250.00.
You might think that that brings us full
circle, but in all honesty that is only half
the trip. When we started this journey, I
was very reluctant to look for children in
need until we had a foundation of funds
behind us. I soon learned that we had a
strong, confident group in B4K that had
that “bring them on” attitude. This gave
us the confidence to start the search.
However, in all the thousands of people
that I have talked to at Gander, I have
never had someone recommend their son,
daughter, nephew, or neighbor for an
outdoor experience. That genuinely surprised me.

with people wanting to know more about
B4K since having Michigan Out of Doors

committee who have needed surgery. We
had contacts at our respective hospitals,
and through those contacts we came up
with our first two “wish kids”. The first
child was Dalton Smith. Dalton wanted to
go white water rafting, and B4K made it
happen. Our second child was Tanner
Lindberg. About two months ago, Tanners trip out west started to fall apart,
and I asked Al if we could be of help.
He responded YES! I called my brother,
Lee SaLee, and asked him to contact the
outfitter he used on his last trip out west.
I contacted another member, Wayne
Wagner, and asked him to do the same.
I then contacted the Rocky Mountain Elk
Foundation. They were able to put out emails to several dozen outfitters that
might have been able to help. Within 48
hours, I received a call from Dick Anderson at Ridgerunner Outfitters in Idaho.
Dick had wanted to help a child for a
long time but had not found the correct
avenue to do so. We were prepared to
give him that opportunity. To be able to
find, set up, and present Tanners trip to
him at our fund raiser “Picnic in the Park”
was a great thrill. Tanner leaves in ten
days, and I am so excited, that you would
think I was the one going on the trip.
To be involved in a project like this, from
conception to success, is very difficult to
put into words. Here success is measured
in smiles and tears to those who truly deserve it.
Thanks to those that have helped, to those
that will help in the future, and those who
care. We can all make a difference; we
just need to get involved. B4K

Benefit4Kids - Our Mission
Benefit4Kids was founded in 1998
with its' primary mission to grant
the outdoor wishes of children with
life threatening and life limiting
illnesses. We also work to involve
today's children in the outdoors
and the many activities it offers
them. Many of today's children are
denied the opportunity to experience the outdoors because of costs,
lack of available mentors and a
limited amount of facilities offering
an all around outdoor experience.
Benefit4Kids works to help these
children experience the outdoors
through several children's programs. Benefit4Kids also works
closely with several children's
camps designed to work with injured and ill children. Instructors at
these camps are experienced in
medical procedures necessary to
work with these children. They are
also experienced in archery,
camping, outdoor cooking, hiking,
nature and many other facets of
outdoor activities. In working with
these and several other children's
camps Benefit4Kids will continue to
assist many less fortunate children
enjoy our great outdoors and help
them to learn the morals and family values that are so often lacking
today.
Benefit4Kids is a 100% Volunteer Organization. We all have jobs and do this in our spare time out of the kindness of our
hearts. This allows 100% of your donations to go straight to supporting the kids.
