18 INTERESTING ITEMS
1. ROBERTS, DAVID THE HOLY LAND, SYRIA, IDUMEA, ARABIA,
EGYPT & NUBIA. After lithographs by Louis Haghe from
drawings made on the spot by David Roberts R.A. with
Historical Descriptions by the Rev. George Croly,
LL.D.[and William Brockedon, F.R.S] London Day & Son
1855.
First quarto edition, 29.2 x 20.5cm. Six volumes bound in three
physical volumes with 250 tinted lithographed plates, including
frontispiece portrait in Volume I, title-pages, and 2 maps (the maps are
not tinted). Plates have the original tissue guards.
David Roberts (1796-1864) had established himself as a topographical
artist of note when in 1838 he planned a visit to the Near East. He
departed in August 1839 for Egypt and spent the rest of the year visiting
numerous tombs and sites in and around Cairo. Early the following year
he set out for the Holy Land visiting Suez, Mount Sinai, and Petra on the
way. He spent several months visiting Biblical sites throughout Palestine
including a considerable period in Jerusalem. He returned to England at
the end of 1839.
The three volumes have been rebacked, the spines are leather with gilt
titles and decorations. The boards are cloth. All edges are gilt. Some
foxing throughout.
This is the quarto edition of the gargantuan folio edition of the same title
from which the plates were photographically reduced in size. In the
words of one critic, “The fidelity of his accurate pencil, his skilful
adherence to truth of costume and surroundings, his attention to
characteristic effect in architecture and landscape, won immediate
recognition and praise.”

3. JUDISCHES MUSEUM NIKOLSBURG. Nikolsburg circa 1936/1939
Portfolio of Illustrations published by the Jewish Museum of Nikolsburg
22 illustrations, including one duplicate. Ex library 23 x 17.5 cm.
Includes a letter on headed paper from the Jewish Museum of
Nickolsburg dated 20th March, 1936 addressed to Maksymiljan Goldstein
a noted researcher and collector of Jewish art.
These objects originally belonged to the Jewish community or were in
the possession of the
many synagogues and
institutions of learning in
Nikolsburg. As the
importance of the town
faded, the items were
gathered together and
eventually put on display
in the Central Jewish
Museum for MoraviaSilesia which opened in
Nikolsburg in 1936. After
the occupation of the
town by the Nazis, the
contents of the museum
were confiscated for an
"ethnological" museum
which the Nazis hoped to
set up as part of their
"final solution". As a result they were not destroyed, and after the war
they were
collected
together in
the Jewish
Museum in
Prague,
where they
remain today.

Gen Website.

Hebrew with a German translation, illustrated by Otto (Natan) Geismar.

ITEM 8
The Haggadah with Geismar’s illustrations was initially published in
Hebrew. In 1928, two separate bilingual editions – one in German, and
one in Dutch - with the original text and a translation were published.
Geismar’s early style has been characterized as ‘minimalist’ and
‘expressionistic.’ His Haggadah illustrations are marked by bold
typography, radically simplified lines, freedom of treatment of
traditional themes (e.g., the illustration for the song Had Gadya) and
humour (the wicked son as a mocker who thumbs his nose at the wise
one; the Plagues of Egypt; a child overcome by the wine and festivities at
the end of the seder banquet, etc.). Geismar’s optimistic ‘logo’ can be
seen at the end of the book: a little bird chirping in a tree next to an open
cage, with the Hebrew initials Aleph Gimel = Otto Geismar. See
