GURU CYCLES L ike many custom frame manufacturers, Guru Cycles was founded by a passionate cyclist. With the belief that he could build a better bicycle than what was on the market, Tony Giannascoli set out as a pioneer in TIG welding steel frames, while his competition was still building lugged brazed steel frames. Tony's frames were much lighter, and had a unique ride quality that quickly gained a following in the cycling community. In 1993 Guru Cycles was founded, employees were hired, and production was ramped up. T oday, Guru Cycles is renowned as a premier manufacturer of high-end bicycles in carbon fiber, titanium, and steel in both stock and custom geometries. Our approach to making frames is based on Tony's original idea of combining cutting edge technology delivered by hand with an old school attention to detail. In our ultra modern manufacturing facility just north of Montreal, Canada, our passionate employees embody our ideal of quality craftsmanship. Guru Cycles engineers, designers, and production staff challenge themselves daily to produce the best frames in the industry. Each frame is brought to life through a high tech process where every detail is analyzed and perfected. New, innovative methods are continuously explored and developed to build highperformance bicycles, and the end result is a product of incredible craftsmanship, innovation, and quality. Guru Cycles has continuously been at the forefront of bicycle design, manufacturing, and materials. Welcome to the Guru family and we look forward to serving your passion for our sport for years to come. Tony Giannascoli President/Founder Guru Cycles GURU CARBON STORY Guru Cycles' carbon program has continuously been on the forefront of technology and innovation. The ability to manufacture carbon frames inhouse from conception to completion in our Canadian factory shortens process times and provides us with the freedom and accessibility for our entire team to work directly with our production staff. Machining our own molds eases the production of prototypes, and allows us to maintain complete control over the process. MANUFACTURING PROCESS MILITARY GRADE CARBON FIBER Guru Cycles carbon frames are manufactured with a blend of UD M46J and M30S fibers, which are cut to perfection to minimize unnecessary overlaps. The quality of carbon that we source is only available in small quantities, and is the same grade that is used in CF-18 combat jets used by the Royal Canadian Air Force. CARBON WRAPPING One of the most critical layers in the carbon frame construction is the layup around the tube junctions of the frame. Carbon technicians work closely with the R&D Team to create the optimal fascia in order to achieve the characteristic toughness required in the joints. Carbon is cut into strategic pieces and is wrapped around the junctions. This is the final attachment of the tube-to-tube frame construction. Our ideology of building a bike to fit you, and not fitting yourself to a bike, is the cornerstone of our entire custom carbon program. More than just custom geometry, we have the ability to tune your frameset and adapt the stiffness and toughness of each tube. Our laminates combine high modulous and intermediate modulus carbon fiber and are the result of a headlong engineering journey which culminates in cuttingedge ultra light framesets; hallmarks of the Photon Series. An impressively stiff and responsive yet compliant ride quality is the signature essence that we strive for in the Photon Series; a feat which is not easily replicated today by our peers in the trade. All too often, stiffness comes at the expense of compliance and is made to serve marketing claims and not the rider. At Guru Cycles, the focus behind all engineering is to exceed in the details and deliver a cutting edge product with a most refined ride quality. Before launching a new model, our frames undergo intensive testing that more TUBE CONSTRUCTION TUBE-to-TUBE MANUFACTURING Carbon fiber pieces are strategically cut and are hand wrapped around a tube-specific bladder. This bladder molding process results in flawless exteriors and wrinkle-free interior tubes; a benchmark that is unachievable with open mold manufacturing. This technique leads to uniform parts with zero folds or creases, avoiding stress concentration points. This method also affords us pinpointed precision in defining ride specific characteristics for each tube. The curing cycle calibrates time, temperture and pressure, while cutting edge mold design ensures that our hallmark 70-30% fiber to resin ratios are maintained. The effect that a high fiber ratio has on ride quality cannot be understated and provides the classic liveliness to all Guru frames; a feature all too often lost in mass production, low fiber/high resin frames. Tubes are mitered to the exact length and angle required. Each tube is inspected and placed in a precision jig, ensuring proper tube alignment and zero gaps. The custom geometry is then set. The tubes are attached with a light epoxy compound which creates tangency between the tubes and contributes to the moment of inertia of tube junctions for proper load transfers. The compound cures for a day and is sanded smooth to the exact desired shape. PAINT PREPARATION PAINT Every carbon frameset undergoes a multi-stage and detailed sanding process to achieve a smooth and flawless finish. The paint is laid on by hand in a multiphase process, with your choice of colors and gloss or matte clearcoat; delivering a consistent high quality finish. All details are painted, no decals are found on Guru frames. than exceeds industry standards. Fatigue and impact tests are performed on all new models prior to being launched and results are compared and repeated to ensure a consistency across our offerings. In tandem with our onsite research and development department, our ability to test our frames in-house and on the road, ensures quality and innovation, allowing us to remain ahead of the competition. Frames are also randomly removed from production and tested to ensure quality. Every carbon frameset that leaves our factory is a true work of art, imbued with unique characteristics to reflect your unique riding personality. PHOTON SERIES The Photon HL is the lightest custom frameset in the world, weighing sub-650 grams for a 54cm frame. Using our proprietary QCC technology, Guru engineers have pushed the envelope again, and achieved an even lighter and stiffer frame. The stiffness to weight ratio increases by 5%, which is the result of reducing the weight of the frame while maintaining stiffness. Manufacturing a frame in the sub-700 gram category is a true feat of engineering excellence. Decreasing frame weight at this level by even 5 grams is a tall order and a challenging task. This year's Photon HL boasts a reduction of 20 grams. Among the list of engineering and design improvements, the Photon HL features a tapered headtube. The benefits of a tapered fork can be felt in every aspect of the ride. Combining the Photon HL with a tapered fork increases power transfer, facilitating cornering and control upon descents. Building our frames in-house to the customers' exact dimensions gives us the ability to mold tubes using an innovative hollow mandrel molding technique. This allows us to remove a significant amount of structural glue and create parts with increased synergy. Riding this frame will change the expectations that every cyclist demands from a bike. D Y N A M I C W I S H B O N E S E A T S T A Y S The integration of engineering, design, and craftsmanship as a global platform for the development of high-tech innovative framesets. A symbiotic methodology that pushes forward the best aspects of design and engineering to deliver the ultimate ride. The asymmetric backbone (Chainstay - Down tube - Seat tube) of the frame is engineered to maximize power transmission to the back wheel. Seatstays are built with a double s-bend to dissipate road shock, which allows the use of an smaller, lighter brake bridge. O P E N A R C H I T E C T U R E D R O P O U T S This innovative internal routing system provides for easy installation or conversion of mechanical or electric transmission without having to use dedicated parts. The IAR system positions the cable stops at optimal locations on the frame to ensure crisp shifting and responsive braking. The incorporation of the tapered 1⅛ - 1½ head tube increases the front triangle stiffness to deliver razor sharp handling, super stable high-speed descents, and rock solid braking. The new seat post rail system provides an unlimited front to back adjustment range. This range allows for the triathlete to be in the most ideal position for ultimate power transfer and is UCI compatible. The tube junctions are made with a unique layup that staggers the carbon layers to avoid stress risers and evens out tube deformation. The totally redesigned full carbon dropout is notably lighter, stiffer and stronger than previous generations, enabling crisp and precise shifting. Each tubeset made by Guru is produced with an attention to detail and a level of craftsmanship guaranteed to deliver the best ride characteristics for each given size. The frame is designed so that the rider can achieve the most aggressive position that can be sustained comfortably. Stronger & stiffer dropouts, allow the adaption from 130mm to 135 mm spacing, can convert to horizontal or 142x12 through axle slots and adapt to single speed or internal gear hub. Eyelets for rack/fender also available. A S Y M M E T R I C D I A M E T E R C H A I N S T A Y S Non-driveside chainstay is significantly larger in diameter. When coupled with a 22mm driveside chainstay the stiffness is increased by 25%. F U L L D I A M E T E R C H A I N S T A Y S Non-drive side chainstay is not flattened, retaining side-to-side stiffness. Drive-side chainstay is formed from a round diameter to oval between the tire and chainring. #guruforlife Connect with us on Social Media @gurucycles 2460 RUE MICHELIN • LAVAL • QUEBEC • CANADA • H7L 5C3 t: 450 687 6644 toll free: 877 755 4878 www.gurucycles.com
