Guidelines
Employment Opportunities
Now that you are part of Kelly’s global network of professionals,
we will work to find opportunities that match your skills and
interests to our customers’ job requirements. Our goal is to find
the right opportunity to best suit your employment needs. You
can choose from the following:
Contract/Temporary assignments—These opportunities vary
in duration and allow you the flexibility of working according to
your schedule, interests and desired location. Some positions
may be project-based with established start and end dates. Other
positions supplement the customer’s staff and may be openended. You will have the opportunity to build your skills, gain work
experience at leading companies and increase your marketability.
Temporary-to-hire opportunities—This arrangement gives both
you and our customer the opportunity to evaluate your fit before a
full-time hiring decision is made.
Direct-hire opportunities—For these positions, customers use our
expertise to identify qualified employees whom they hire directly.
Contract/temporary opportunities may be available while your Kelly
representative pursues the appropriate direct-hire position.
As these options demonstrate, our goal is to find the right
opportunity that best suits your employment needs. For some
positions, our customers require a resumé or interview. Your
Kelly representative will coordinate resumé submissions and
interview appointments.
What is Expected of You
When you accept an assignment, you represent Kelly to our
customers. We expect you to be professional, conscientious and
courteous. Doing a great job and projecting a positive image go
hand-in-hand.
It is important to note that Kelly is your employer, not the
customer to whom you’re assigned.
Kelly will provide you with the details of any assignment
you accept. If the customer significantly changes those
responsibilities, notify your Kelly representative. Your Kelly
representative will also advise you of the appropriate attire for
your assignment. Dress appropriately and professionally, and
avoid extremes in hairstyles, clothing and jewellery.
When reporting to work on the first day of an assignment, leave
early to allow yourself plenty of time in case you encounter heavy
traffic or have difficulty finding the customer location. You may
also be required to park in a designated area, report to security to
obtain a badge or participate in an orientation program.
• R
esponsibility—Once you accept an assignment, we expect
you to fulfil your obligation. Please give us advance notice if
you are unable to do so.
• D
ependability—Honour your commitment to be at work on
time every day, and to finish the tasks assigned to you.
• E
fficiency—Verify the accuracy of your work. Take initiative
when appropriate, and regularly inform the customer of the
status of your work.
• P
rofessionalism—Keep your work area neat and organized. Do
not use the customer’s equipment and supplies for personal
use, and do not take any items that belong to the customer
(e.g., notes, calculators, office supplies). The solicitation of
employees and the general distribution of literature, products
or services is not allowed.
• P
ersonal Communication—Keep personal phone calls
(including cell phone calls) to a minimum. Refrain from
exchanging personal e-mail and instant/text messages at work.
• Discretion—Do not disclose any proprietary or confidential
information of any Kelly customer. Protect the customer’s
confidential information and materials by maintaining and
storing them properly. Also, pay rates are confidential and
should never be discussed with the customer or co-workers.
Working With Your Kelly Office
You are expected to maintain communication with your Kelly
office when the following situations occur:
• Y
ou are going to be late or have an emergency that prevents you
from reporting to work. Do not call the customer. We will inform
them of your situation and make the appropriate arrangements.
• You are injured at work or the work environment seems unsafe.
• Y
ou are unable to complete an assignment. In this situation,
contact your Kelly representative, not the customer. We will
inform them and make the appropriate arrangements.
• Y
ou are not satisfied with your work assignment. Do not speak
with the customer. Instead, contact your Kelly representative to
discuss possible solutions.
• Y
our work duties are different or have changed from those
originally described by your Kelly representative.
• T
he customer asks you to work overtime, or you work a series
of assignments totalling more than the provincially legislated
work week.
When interacting with customers, remember the following:
• T
he customer offers to hire you directly, either during or after
your assignment is complete.
• B
e friendly—Introduce yourself with a handshake and a smile.
Create a positive first impression.
• Y
our availability changes or you have commitments that will
keep you from being available.
• C
ommunicate effectively—Be clear and precise. Avoid
using slang.
• You plan to take time off for a vacation or holiday.
• A
sk questions—Seek clarification if you need more information
about your job responsibilities.
2
We expect you to be the best. This means exhibiting the
following attributes:
• Y
ou have moved or your phone number has changed. We must
have your correct phone number and address to ensure we
can contact you about job opportunities and you receive your
paystubs, Record of Employment (ROE), T4s, etc.
• Your e-mail address has changed.
• Y
ou feel you are being harassed at work by a customer
supervisor, co-worker or anyone in the workplace.

delay the delivery of your paycheque. We recommend that you
participate in our Direct Deposit and ePaystub Programs.
Completing a Time Card
A sample of a correctly completed time card is shown below.
Ensure that you have submitted your time to your local Kelly
branch at the end of your work week no later than 12:00 p.m.
(Eastern Time) on Tuesday following the week worked. Time
received in the Payroll Centre after noon (Eastern Time) on
Tuesday may not be paid that week.
Note: This list is not all-inclusive. There may be additional reasons
to call your Kelly office. Please use your best judgment.
Attendance
If you are going to be late or absent from work, you must
contact your Kelly office. Provide adequate notice for anticipated
absences, such as vacation.
In the event of illness or personal emergency, provide a minimum
of four hours notice whenever possible. Being late or absent
without calling is unacceptable.
Getting Paid
One of our highest priorities is paying you quickly and accurately.
As long as you submit your time promptly and accurately at the
end of your work week, expect your pay to be processed by
Friday of the following week.
Usually, you will be paid an hourly rate based on the skills required
for each assignment. You will be supplied with a unique reference
number for each assignment and you are responsible for promptly
and accurately submitting your time.
Report only the hours you worked—no more and no less. Never
report time for another employee. Overtime must be approved
prior to working extra hours. Also, do not record holiday or
vacation hours. If you meet the qualifying criteria for statutory
holiday pay, you will receive it automatically.
Kelly Services and their customers may use a variety of timekeeping
systems (e.g., paper time cards, swipe card systems or web-based
systems). Please follow the instructions for submitting your time
outlined below. Instructions for using Kelly Web Time are in the
next section.
As your employer, Kelly deducts required federal and provincial
taxes, Canada/Quebec Pension Plan, Employment Insurance (EI)
and other legally required deductions (e.g., garnishments and tax
levies) that have been served to Kelly.
Call 866.KELLY4U (866.535.5948) or complete the Payroll
Support Hotline online form available on myKelly.ca for all of your
payroll inquiries.
Submitting Your Time
When submitting time, you must enter hours worked for each
day of the week. Please keep in mind that statutory holidays,
inclement weather conditions and seasonal mail volumes may
Note: Make sure to round daily hours to the nearest 15 minutes
(i.e., 0, 15, 30, 45) before summing the column.
An incomplete time card may result in a delay in processing your
pay. Common errors include an incorrect reference number, week
ending or SIN.

available on payday (the Friday following the week worked). For
your records, a copy of your paystub is mailed to you, or available
through the ePaystub Web site if you have signed up for the
ePaystub Program.
Enrolment in Kelly ePaystub is voluntary. Once you have received
your first paper paycheque, you will receive an e-mail from Kelly
inviting you to enrol in Kelly ePaystub. Visit myKelly.ca for more

WHMIS OVERVIEW
(For remote hiring)
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
During the remote hiring process, an employee may not be able to view the WHIMIS video in a
Kelly branch. As an alternate the remote hire candidate should follow these steps to complete
WHMIS training and evaluation:

WHMIS OVERVIEW
(For remote hiring)
Transcript of the Video
WHMIS stands for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. WHMIS was
introduced across Canada in the late 1980’s by a combination of Federal and Provincial
Legislation.
WHMIS was created to reduce injuries, illnesses and deaths associated with working with
hazardous materials in the workplace.
The system requires the classification of hazardous materials into one or more of six classes
and only applies to materials that meet specific hazard criteria that is set out under Federal law.
These hazardous materials that come under the umbrella of WHMIS are also referred to as
‘controlled products’.
Any controlled product that is used must be appropriately labelled, must have a corresponding
Material Safety Data Sheet, or MSDS, and must be used only by people who have been
properly trained. This training must not only enable people to recognize class symbols, but, just
as importantly, it must also give people the ability to read and correctly interpret labels and
Material Safety Data Sheets.
Classifications of Controlled Products
As we have already said WHMIS requires controlled products to be classified into one or more
of six classes. These classes are:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Class A – Compressed gas
Class B – Flammable and combustible material
Class C – Oxidizing material
Class D – Poisonous and infectious material
Class E – Corrosive material
Class F – Dangerously reactive material
Now, each of these classes is represented by a symbol with the exception of Class D which is
broken into three divisions and each division has its own symbol. So, we have a total of 8
WHMIS symbols, all of which we need to be familiar with.

WHMIS OVERVIEW
(For remote hiring)
Danger Symbols
The first symbol, the symbol for Class A controlled products looks like this. This
symbol must appear on all compressed gas cylinders, and simply indicates that the
cylinder may contain a gas under pressure. If subjected to heat or severe impact the
cylinder may explode or act as a projectile.
The symbol for Class B controlled products, which are material that are flammable
and combustible looks like this. These are materials that may catch fire they are
exposed to a heat source or to an ignition source such as a spark or a flame. Class B
controlled products can be gases, liquids or solids. Examples include,
gases such as:
•
•
liquids such as:
hydrogen
and propane
•
•
gasoline
and kerosene
and solids such as:
•
•
magnesium
and potassium
The next symbol is for Class C materials. These are oxidizing materials and in simple
terms these materials present a fire or explosion risk when near other flammable or
combustible materials. They also have potential to cause burns to the skin and eyes.
These Class C materials must be stored in designated areas, be kept away from
ignition sources and should only be handled with appropriate personal protective
equipment.
Examples include:
•
•
•
nitric acid
hydrogen peroxide
and chlorine
Class D comprises materials that are poisonous and infectious. All the materials in this class
must be handled with extreme caution, and safe work practices and procedures must be strictly
adhered to. As we have already said, this Class is divided into three divisions, each with its own
hazard symbol.
Division one, is for materials which can cause immediate and serious toxic or
poisonous effects and is represented by the universally recognizable skull and cross
bones. A single exposure to any of the materials in this division can be fatal.
Examples include:
•
•
•
sodium cyanide
carbon monoxide
and sulphuric acid

WHMIS OVERVIEW
(For remote hiring)
Division two is for the materials that have toxic or poisonous effects but not effects
that are immediately life threatening. Repeated exposures to these materials may
however lead to death or permanent health damage. Skin irritations, allergic,
reactions, organ damage, and cancer are all possible outcomes from exposure to
these materials. Examples include:
•
•
•
•
benzene
asbestos
lead
and mercury
Division three, is for materials that are biohazardous and infections. A biohazardous
infectious material is a material that contains organisms, which can cause disease.
Included in this division are viruses and bacteria.
The effects of a single exposure to these materials could result in a serious illness or
disease, which may ultimately be fatal. A good example would be a contaminated
blood sample containing the Hepatitis B virus.
Class E are corrosive materials and are represented by this symbol, which clearly
indicates that they can corrode metals and cause serious injuries to body tissues.
Inhalation of vapours from corrosive liquids or the inhalation of corrosive gases can
cause respiratory system damage.
Included in this Class are such materials as:
•
•
•
sulphuric acid
sodium hydroxide
and ammonia
Class F is for dangerously reactive materials and uses this symbol. These materials
can react violently if exposed to water or different energy sources such as light, heat,
vibration and extreme temperature. The results can include fire and explosion and/or
the release of toxic gas. Examples include:
•
•
styrene
and benzoyl peroxide
It is important to be able to recognize all of the eight symbols we have just looked at and the
hazards they represent, as at least one of them will appear on every WHMIS supplier label.

Labels
The containers of controlled products must be labelled to clearly indicate and identify the
contents and the hazards of the material.
A WHMIS label can vary from a mark or sign to a sticker or wrapper. The label can be attached,
imprinted, stencilled or embossed on the controlled product itself or its container.
In the workplace, there are two different types of WHMIS labels used most often that you should
be aware of. They are the supplier label and the workplace label.
The supplier label, an example of which you can see here, is on the product and when it is
received on site. It must contact the following information:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
The name of the product
The name of the company that supplied it
A reference to a material safety data sheet
The hazard symbol or symbols
The risk phrases, which are words that describe the main hazards of the product
The precautionary measures, which is how to work with the product safely
The first aid measures, that is, what to do in an emergency
The text must be in English and French
The label must have a distinctive WHMIS border
The other common WHMIS label is the workplace label. It must appear on all controlled
products manufactured in the workplace and on controlled products that are transferred from the
suppliers’ container to a work site container.
This label can also be used to replace a supplier label that has been damaged or is no longer
legible.
A workplace label must have at least the following information:
•
•
•
the name of the product
information for the safe handling of the product
a reference to a material safety data sheet
It is important to note that in a few special cases, any form of clear identification, such as the
name of the product, or a colour code or numbering system, may be used instead of a
workplace label.
These cases include controlled products in pipes, reaction vessels, ore cars and on conveyor
belts.
They also include products that are transferred into work site containers for use by one person
only, and are used up during the shift on which the container was filled.

Material Safety Data Sheets
A Material Safety Data Sheet must be available on site for every controlled product that is either
used or produced at that location.
These Material Safety Data Sheets must be readily accessible by everyone.
Typically, an MSDS is made up of at least nine sections. The following sample form shows the
nine required sections that must be present although not necessarily in the order shown.
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
The first section contains product information. It includes the name of the product, the
manufacturers and suppliers’ names, their addresses and emergency phone numbers.
Section two details the hazardous ingredients and describes the chemical composition of
the product and the concentration of each chemical.
The third section is the physical data, and covers such things as whether the controlled
product is a solid, liquid or a gas and what it smells and looks like.
Section four indicates the fire and explosion data such as how flammable the substance
is and the explosive properties of the material.
Section five, records the reactivity data such as the chemical instability or the product
and the substances it may react with.
The sixth section covers the toxicological properties, that is, the health hazard data such
as the routes of entry into the body, the exposure limits and the effects of being exposed
to the product.
Section seven, the preventative measures include the safe handling, use, storage and
disposal of the product, and what personal protective equipment is required to handle it.
The eighth section covers the first aid measures, which include what to do in case of an
emergency involving the product, such as poisoning, or direct contact with the
substance.
The final section which is the part that includes the preparation information. This section
identifies who is responsible for preparing the MSDS and the date it was prepared.
A Material Safety Data Sheet can often be quite a complicated and demanding document that
requires an understanding of many physical and chemical terms and concepts.
If you an unsure about any of the information contained in a MSDS that is applicable to your
work make sure you discuss it with the appropriate person in your organization.
A fire or explosion is one of only three ways that we can become injured or ill when dealing with
controlled products.
The other two ways are by having direct physical contact with controlled products and by having
controlled products actually entering the body.
Direct physical contact means contact with the skin, face or eyes. This contact can occur with a
controlled product in any physical form, be it a solid, liquid or a gas.

WHMIS OVERVIEW
(For remote hiring)
Direct physical contact will obviously not necessarily lead to harmful effects but can result in a
variety of problems including burns, tissue damage, dermatitis and allergic reactions.
The wearing of appropriate personal protective equipment such as full-face shields, gloves
aprons and boots is often required when the possibility of direct physical contact exists.
The most common problem, and frequently the most serious, when using controlled products in
the workplace, is when the products actually enter the body.
And, this can only occur in one of four ways:
•
•
•
•
by absorption of the substance through the skin
by injection of the substance most commonly via a needle
by ingestion, most frequently as a result of bad hygiene and contaminated food
by simply breathing in the substance
Of these four ways inhalation is by far the most common route of entry into the body.
Dust, vapours, mists, sprays, smoke, fumes and gases could all be potential sources for
controlled products to enter the body.
Adequate ventilation and or the requirement to wear appropriate respiratory equipment are the
two most frequently used methods of controlling airborne contaminants.
The workplace hazardous materials information system that we have just looked as is just that.
It is an information system. It supplies us with access to the knowledge about controlled
products that we use. It does not in itself mean that these substances will be used safely.
Fortunately, most job tasks in the workplace that require the use of controlled products also
have established safe work procedures in place.
Following these procedures is the best way we can avoid accidents, injuries and illnesses
associated with the use of hazardous materials.
And remember, it could be argued that there is no such thing as a safe chemical, but…it would
be hard to argue that there is not a safe way of handling and using all chemicals.
