Six-year-old Tyler Frank, of Chicago, visited The Works on Wednesday with his sister, Addy, and grandparents Elaine and Andy Starinchak, of Westerville. He took home the top plaque for his age category and was planning ADVERTISEMENT on purchasing the car he'd built. Although he's more of a Lego fan than K'NEX, he said, he was pleased his car had made a speedy debut. "This has been the best fun," his grandmother said. Kyleigh Clark, 4, of Newark, was the runner-up to Tyler. She used large wheels to construct her car and "kept testing it and changing it" until she was satisfied with the design, said her mother, Krista Clark. "It was pretty easy for me," Kyleigh said. In the older age category, winner Shaylin Wills, 10, of Newark, said she, too, had undergone several trial-and-error sessions before constructing the ideal car using four small wheels in a rectangular configuration with a heavy back end. "It kept on breaking," she said, adding that a volunteer from The Works helped her hone the design to its final winning form. It was her first time competing in Spring Break Nationals, she said. Her runner-up was 11-year-old Alex Curtis, of Newark. The event's supervisors were pleased with the turnout and even admitted to being thankful the snow had kept the young spring breakers indoors. "It was a pretty good crowd this time," Layton said. Abbey Roy can be reached at (740) 328-8546 or amroy@newarkadvocate.com.
