WFO The official newsletter of the World Federation of Orthodontists VOLUME 17, ISSUE 1 - 2012 First articles of the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists are now online at www.jwfo.org The first articles of the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists (JWFO) are now available at www.jwfo.org. The JWFO is offered exclusively online, and WFO members have complete access to the peer-reviewed journal’s content as a membership benefit. Elsevier, the world’s leading provider of science and health information, is the publisher and is managing the journal website. WFO members need to register and activate their subscriptions to gain access to the full-text articles. At the top of the home page, select the “Register” link. In the pull-down menu, select the link “Register and Activate Your Subscription.” After registering an account, members must return to the login/registration page and select the link “Claim Online Access to Full-text Articles.” The full issue of the JWFO will be published online in the coming weeks and should be available by the end of April. To receive an e-mail notification when a new issue is published, select the “New Issue Alert” on the website. “The initial reaction of the world orthodontic community to the launch of the JWFO was excellent,” said Dr. Jorge Faber, editor-in-chief of the JWFO. “All members of the editorial board enthusiastically accepted the invitation to be part of this team (see the related sidebar on this page). This has a special meaning since they are all among the best in the world in their fields of expertise. We have received several manuscripts from different continents, and many were accepted for publication. I believe that the WFO members will enjoy reading the articles that are online and will approve the multimedia content that we are developing for the journal.” WFO is expanding its online presence with a newly redesigned website Dr. Faber is now looking ahead to the next issue and encourages WFO members to submit manuscripts, especially those that relate to skeletal anchorage. Interested authors can review author guidelines and submit articles via Elsevier’s submission website for the JWFO: http://ees.elsevier.com/jwfo. The authors of the best two articles published in the JWFO in 2012 will receive priority consideration by the scientific committee of the 8th International Orthodontic Congress (IOC) for possible inclusion in the “Rising Stars” program that will be offered at the IOC in London, England, in 2015. The WFO is on the verge of launching its newly redesigned website. The site, www.wfo.org, will feature a new look, reorganized content and expanded offerings to better serve WFO members and WFO affiliate organizations. By the time WFO members receive this WFO Gazette, the site, most likely, will be live. “The new website will help bring together all orthodontists from around the world,” said Dr. Amanda Maplethorp, who, as a member of the WFO Executive Committee, coordinated the redesign of the site. “This is just the first step in our efforts to establish a strong online presence and improve communication with members and affiliate organizations. We are always looking for ways to better serve the membership.” The user-friendly site will offer a members-only section that will allow WFO members to update their membership information, access the new Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists, renew membership dues and purchase WFO merchandise. JWFO editor-in-chief selects editorial board • Case Reports: Dr. Elliott Moskowitz of New York University, USA • Clinician’s Corner: Dr. John Monticello, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA • Dental Materials: Dr. Shin-Jae Lee of Seoul National University, Korea • Oral Biology, Growth and Development: Dr. Guoqiang Guan of the State University of New York at Buffalo, USA • Multimedia Content: Dr. Flavia Artese of Rio de Janeiro State University, Brazil • Scientific Method in Dentistry: Dr. Adam Qingsong Ye of James Cook University, Cairns, Australia WFO affiliate organizations use social media to disseminate news to members, the public on a regular basis With social media outlets, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Google+, continuing to grow at an astronomical rate, several WFO affiliate orthodontic organizations are taking advantage of social media to communicate with their members and the public. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) created its member Facebook page in 2009. The AAO’s Facebook presence now includes pages for the association’s general membership, the public, those interested in the Annual Session, and those individuals who are AAO resident communications liaisons. Both the AAO’s member website, www.AAOinfo.org, and the public website, www.mylifemysmile.org, feature links to the Facebook pages, as well as the other social media sites. Within Facebook, search for the American Association of Orthodontists or AAO to find the various pages. “The AAO wants to communicate with our members in every feasible way,” said Dr. Michael Rogers, president of the AAO. “Facebook has the largest audience, it is free and a future safe bet. In addition, it fits into all of our marketing plans. Through this outlet, the AAO posts videos, has written communication, as well as timely articles about orthodontics.” Burt Bollinger, senior manager of communications/marketing for the AAO, maintains the majority of the AAO’s pages, as well as the association’s presence on Google+ and YouTube. “My goal is to create a place on Facebook, where our very busy members already are, so that when they log in, they will find AAO member information right there waiting for them.” Dr. Greg Jorgensen, a member of the AAO’s Peer-to-peer Social Media Cohort Task Force and chair of the AAO Committee on Information Technology, appreciates this strength of social media the most. “The information comes to you; you don’t have to go looking for it,” he said. “It is ‘inbound marketing,’ and those who receive it are only those who have indicated interest.” The AAO member Facebook page, which is open to anyone who “likes” the page, has approximately 5,000 followers. “Our daily active users range from 500 to 1,500 per day,” Mr. Bollinger said. “This is the number of people who have interacted with or viewed our page or its posts on a daily basis.” To keep the pages fresh, Mr. Bollinger will post information two to three times a week. “I feel very strongly about not bombarding our members and those who ‘like’ our page with too much information. There is a fine line between being helpful and being annoying. I’d prefer to give less information than more, as I don’t want people to ‘unlike’ or block our page from their feeds.” He also responds to posts in 24 hours. “Response time is very important when it comes to social media,” he said. For those organizations considering the creation of a Facebook page or a Twitter account, Mr. Bollinger encourages them to get started today. “This is easier than many would believe,” he said. “It should not be difficult to find content; it can be as easy as pulling articles from your newsletter. I would also stress the importance of video. Get a camera and some editing software and take your message directly to members. CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 The site will feature expanded sections on the WFO affiliate organizations and the governance of the WFO. WFO members will also find links to the upcoming 8th International Orthodontic Congress, a reorganized news section and the online directory. In addition, orthodontists and orthodontic organizations interested in joining the WFO can download the appropriate application. "Since the WFO launched its website in the late 1990s, much has changed with how society interacts online,” said Dr. Roberto Justus, WFO president. “A great percentage of the WFO members now have access to the Internet. It is crucial for an organization, such as the WFO, to have an intuitive, well-organized and informative website. We believe the new WFO website has all of these attributes, and we will strive to build upon this foundation. I encourage all WFO members to visit the site and to also take part in our newest online resource, the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists." The BOS is offering an innovative debenture package to WFO members (including WFO student members) ONLY. The debenture package provides unique privileges to those who sign up. Specifically, participants qualify for a significantly reduced congress rate and may spread the registration payments over a four-year period. The 8th IOC will bring together the world orthodontic family for four days of education, entertainment and enjoyment. It will be held in London’s premier conference venue, ExCeL, which is located in an area of the city that is undergoing a renaissance in preparation for the Summer Olympics in 2012. With excellent conference facilities that can cater to over 10,000 delegates and exhibitors and brand new transport links that can whisk attendees into the center of London in the blink of an eye, ExCeL is the ideal venue for the world’s greatest orthodontic meeting. The British Orthodontic Society has a track record of organizing spectacular meetings and conferences, and, by offering a debenture package, the BOS is encouraging delegates to sign up early at a reduced rate, spreading the cost over four years. “By the time 2015 arrives, debenture holders will hardly have to pay a thing and can save their money for enjoying their stay in London and the UK,” said Dr. Jonathan Sandler, chair of the 8th IOC. Visit http://wfo2015london.org/ to register now and to learn more about the 8th IOC. WFO president to attend several 2012 orthodontic meetings on behalf of the World Federation of Orthodontists Every year the WFO president and the Executive Committee representatives attend WFO affiliate organization meetings and other orthodontic continuing-education events to foster support for the WFO. For 2012, Dr. Roberto Justus, president of the WFO, has been invited to attend several meetings as a keynote speaker. In all, he has attended or will attend the following meetings1: • 1st International and 2nd National Orthodontic Conference of the Bangladesh Orthodontic Society Jan. 26-28, in Dhaka, Bangladesh • American Board of Orthodontics’ Clinical Examination Feb. 17-22, in Dallas, Texas, USA (Dr. Justus served as an examiner) • 5th Congresso Paulista of the Associação Brasileira de Ortodontia e Ortopedia Facial April 20-24, in São Paulo, Brazil • 112th Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists May 3-9, in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA • 88th Congress of the European Orthodontic Society June 18-23, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain • American Board of Orthodontics’ Clinical Examination Aug. 23-26, in St. Louis, Missouri, USA (Dr. Justus will serve as an examiner) • Multidisciplinary Meeting of Craniofacial Alterations Sept. 13-15, at Monterrey University in Monterrey, Mexico • 11th Annual Session of the Chinese Orthodontic Society Sept. 19-23, in Beijing, China • 12th Panhellenic Orthodontic Congress of the Greek Association for Orthodontic Study and Research Sept. 28-29, in Athens, Greece • 47th Indian Orthodontic Conference and the 8th Asian Pacific Orthodontic Conference Nov. 29-Dec. 2, in New Delhi, India. On May 29, Dr. Justus will give lectures to the residents of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA, as the 2012 Kokich-Shapiro Visiting Scholar. 1 The above dates reflect when Dr. Justus was or will be in attendance at the various events. These dates do not necessarily correspond to the official meeting dates. WFO encourages affiliate organizations to participate in the study on specialty By now, presidents of the 109 affiliate organizations of the WFO should have received an extensive questionnaire designed to collect data on the current characteristics and standards of the orthodontic specialty worldwide. In 2011, the WFO commissioned a follow-up study to one it conducted more than a decade ago in an effort to gather extensive information on the global orthodontic community. The original two-year study, which began in 1997, investigated how the specialty is practiced, as well as the methods used by professionals in different countries and regions to deliver orthodontic care. This new study will build on the data collected previously. Dr. Neil Kessel, a second-year orthodontic resident at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC), is coordinating the follow-up study on behalf of the WFO. This project is the basis of his master’s thesis. Dr. H. Garland Hershey, UNC professor of orthodontics and former vice chancellor of the university, is serving as an advisor to Dr. Kessel on this project. The questionnaire is similar to the original 14-page survey, which covered regulations and definitions, legislation, education, human resources, orthodontic practice environment, and characteristics of the WFO affiliate organizations. Additional questions address new aspects of the specialty that have developed over the past 13 years. The questionnaire was sent by e-mail to the affiliate organizations. If you are a president of an affiliate organization and have not received the e-mail or have questions about this survey, please contact the WFO Secretariat at wfo@wfo.org. AAO to sponsor breakfast reception for WFO affiliate organization presidents The WFO has invited WFO affiliate organization presidents, or their representatives, to attend a breakfast reception May 6, 2012. The breakfast reception is sponsored annually by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) in conjunction with its Annual Session. The AAO will hold its 112th Annual Session May 4-8 in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA. Members of the WFO Executive Committee, including President Dr. Roberto Justus and Secretary-General Dr. William DeKock, will report on the WFO’s recent activities. Look to the next issue of the WFO Gazette for details on this event. WFO Affiliate Organizations Use Social Media CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Brief video clips have become one of my favorite ways of spreading information to our busy members. It’s fast, direct and to the point. As time passes, video will become a preferred method of communicating with new and younger members.” Mr. Bollinger uses Vimeo to host the AAO’s videos and then shares the link on the member Facebook page. “Members can watch the videos without ever leaving Facebook,” he said. Mr. Bollinger notes that an association’s members may vary in how they use the social media sites. “Every membership group is different,” he said “One group may be less ‘active’ than another, but that should not discourage you. The goal is getting out good and timely information on a platform that your members are using. For the AAO, Facebook and Twitter are that platform.” The Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society (APOS) also created a Facebook page in 2009. Its page focuses on the APOS publications — the APOS News and APOS Trends in Orthodontics. Like the AAO, the APOS has a link to the page on its website, www.apospublications.com. The page can also be found within Facebook by searching for APOS Publications. While the AAO’s pages are open, the APOS has chosen to create a closed page, and interested individuals must request to join in order to gain access to the page. To date, the APOS Publications page has more than 500 members. Dr. Nikhilesh Vaid, editor of the APOS publications, hopes the page exceeds 1,000 members by year-end. “The advantages of a closed group are being able to monitor comments and information,” Dr. Vaid said. “We want it for fraternal and scientific interaction between orthodontists and not used for commercial enterprises. We are also sensitive about non-orthodontists posting or joining the group, especially if they aren’t members or aren’t eligible to be members of the specialty organization of the country they belong to.” Dr. Vaid, who posts to the page every other day, offers conference reports and programs through the page and encourages clinical discussions. He also posts upcoming events, product information and achievements of members. “It helps in quick dissemination of information and knowledge and provides a common platform for fraternal interactions and bonding in an informal manner,” he said. The Philippine Board of Orthodontics (PBO) and the Association of Philippine Orthodontists (APO) also have official Facebook pages, which are listed under the name of each organization. The organizations’ websites, www.pbo.ph and www.apo.com.ph, have links to the Facebook pages as well. “Like the APO, the PBO has its own Facebook page to become more accessible to society that relies on this social medium for news and connections,” said Dr. Robert Eustaquio, chairman of the PBO. “We’ve had our website for more than five years and have been on Facebook since last year.” These are just a few of the organizations using social media. Log in to Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube to search for other orthodontic societies. 3 WFO fellow’s movie and photographs capture interest of Korean museum officials, public An orthodontist’s passion for photography and film has resulted in the preservation of rare color photographs and movie footage of Korean villagers pursuing daily life during a time of war. Sixty years ago, Dr. Charles Burstone, now a WFO fellow and professor emeritus at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, was serving as a captain in the United States Air Force. For eight months, he was stationed at the K-9 Air Base in the Suyeong district of Busan in South Korea toward the end of the Korean War. While there, he provided dental care to the troops and the local villagers. This is the bridge to the K-9 Air Base. The base housing and runways are visible in the distance. The man in the foreground uses a bamboo pole to balance the weight of his heavy load. Although he was on call seven days a week, Dr. Burstone would take daily walks around the base and surrounding area, usually during his lunch break or at the end of the day. Armed only with his Konica camera and Kodak 8-mm movie camera, he captured villagers going about their daily tasks. He photographed peaceful images of children playing, men fishing and villagers at the local market, among many other pastoral scenes. The end of the K-9 Air Base runway was situated near the Korea Strait of the Pacific Ocean. Koreans would picnic near the water and fish for seafood. “Many times we’d also visit the British, Australian and Italian troops,” Dr. Burstone said. “We would take an ambulance, but we were never armed” so as not to attract the attention of guerillas. When he returned to the United States, he developed the film and created a movie of the images, carefully labeling many of the scenes. With his service in the Air Force complete, Dr. Burstone embarked on his career in orthodontics, completing In 2008, Dr. Park shared the film with the National Folk Museum of Korea in Seoul. By this point, Dr. Burstone had transferred the movie to DVD. The museum officials were interested in the material — so much so that the museum sent a delegation to interview and film Dr. Burstone at his Connecticut home in 2010. Dr. Burstone donated his original film footage, as well as 79 color photographs to the museum. From all of this material, the museum curators developed an exhibit, documentary film and book, entitled Korea 1952. This is the market in Tongnae, Korea, in 1952. At that time, Tongnae was a small town of 500 people and was well-known for its hot springs. Today, it has a population of more than 1 million people. his master’s degree in 1955. That same year, he became an assistant professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Indiana University. As the years passed and his academic career progressed, Dr. Burstone continued to photograph and film his travels. His collection grew, and he frequently showed his colleagues his movies. In 1984, Dr. Burstone, then professor and head of the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Connecticut, showed the movie from Korea to his orthodontic colleague Dr. Young Chel Park of Seoul, Korea. Dr. Park, at the time, was a visiting professor at the university. Currently, he is a professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Yonsei University College of Dentistry in Seoul and president of the World Implant Orthodontic Association. Dr. Charles Burstone attends the special exhibit Korea 1952 at the National Folk Museum of Korea in Seoul, Korea, in September 2011. “It was a pleasant and unexpected surprise to find a bit of home while abroad,” said Dr. Park, who is a WFO fellow and a past president of the Korean Association of Orthodontists. “1952 was an important year in modern Korean history as it is the year that the Korean War came to an end. At the time, any record of the war in the form of photography or film footage was quite rare. This is why Dr. Burstone’s films are so special; they are color movies that accurately portray the living conditions of Koreans following the war. The viewer is able to see what everyday life was like for Koreans, as well as what the cities and countryside looked like at the time.” Dr. Charles Burstone donated his original movie footage and photographs of his time in Korea in 1952 to the National Folk Museum of Korea in Seoul, Korea. The museum’s special exhibit ran from June 22 to Sept. 5, 2011. News of his contribution became widely spread when most of the Korean television stations included a segment on the documentary film during the primetime news. “I think all of us take pictures, and they get thrown out or put away,” said Dr. Burstone, who recently returned to the United States after teaching at the University of Western Australia in Perth. “It was nice that this has been done. The collection is part of the museum’s permanent collection, and research scholars will use the materials.” Last year, the Korean government invited Dr. Burstone to visit Korea as part of the initiative Korea Revisit, which is offered to American Korean War veterans as a thank you for their service. Dr. Burstone accepted the invitation and traveled to Korea in September. While there, Dr. Burstone met with his colleagues at the National Folk Museum of Korea and saw the exhibit in person. He also visited orthodontic colleagues and gave a lecture at Yonsei University. In addition, he and other veterans from the Korean War participated in a special remembrance ceremony. “My respect for Dr. Burstone reached new heights as I saw this project come to fruition,” said Dr. Park, who had the honor of attending the exhibit with Dr. Burstone as his lifelong student. “He was able to capture his affection and curiosity for Koreans and their lifestyles at the end of the war into his movies. He has been able to make a priceless contribution to modern Korean history by providing a window to the Korean War.” WFO exceeds 8,400 fellows and members, 100 affiliate organizations More than 8,400 WFO fellows and members now enjoy the membership benefits of the WFO. The WFO offers four categories of membership: fellow, academic member, student member and retired member. WFO fellows and members receive the following benefits: • free subscriptions to the WFO Gazette and the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists (JWFO), • a listing in the WFO online membership directory, and • reduced registration fees for major orthodontic conferences. “WFO fellows and members stand out as bona fide orthodontists worldwide,” said Dr. Roberto Justus, president of the WFO. “The fellows and members all meet stringent qualifications that ensure they are specialists in orthodontics.” To date, the WFO has 109 affiliate organizations, including eight regional affiliate organizations. As a result, the WFO has representation in more than 100 countries around the world. When Dr. Justus travels to various orthodontic conferences around the world, he encourages the orthodontists to join the WFO. “Increased membership strengthens the corresponding affiliated societies,” he said. The Macedonian Orthodontic Society (MOS) most recently joined the WFO as an affiliate organization. “We decided to join the WFO because it is the mother of all societies from the world,” said Dr. Radmila Dimovska, general secretary of the MOS, who is encouraging the 123 members of the MOS to join the WFO as fellows. The organization joined the WFO in January 2011. At this time, the following affiliate organizations have the largest number of WFO fellows: • • • • • American Association of Orthodontists – 1,266 fellows, Chinese Orthodontic Society – 919 fellows, Japanese Orthodontic Society – 516 fellows, Korean Association of Orthodontists – 398 fellows, Associação Brasileira de Ortodontia e Ortopedia Facial – 296 fellows, • Australian Society of Orthodontists – 259 fellows, • British Orthodontic Society – 242 fellows, • German Orthodontic Society – 215 fellows, • Sociedad Española de Ortodoncia – 213 fellows, • Asociación Mexicana de Ortodoncia – 208 fellows. The WFO online directory offers a complete listing of all affiliate organizations. Go to www.wfo.org to access this resource. The WFO has also posted applications for all member classification categories on its website. WFO azette 4 Association of Philippine Orthodontists receives accolades, recognition in 2011 Throughout 2011, the Association of Philippine Orthodontists (APO) received several accolades, beginning with recognition from the Philippine Professional Regulation Commission’s Board of Dentistry (PRC-BOD) in January. The PRC-BOD accredited the APO, an affiliate of the Philippine Dental Association (PDA), as the official specialty society for orthodontics in the Philippines. APO representatives attended the ceremony Jan. 26, 2011, at the Manila Hotel in Manila, Philippines. The APO, founded in 1980, has 135 members. “The greater challenge for the APO, I believe, is not only to be THE recognized orthodontic specialty group in the Philippines but also to keep up with the international standard of providing orthodontic care,” said Dr. Roberto Tan, president of the APO. “Meeting this challenge will ensure the highest standards of orthodontic service and practice in the country, thereby protecting the public and the profession. Our role as a specialty organization can only be realized when we can truly be of service to the community, to the organization and to our profession. “With this recognition, the APO also continues its commitment to the upliftment of orthodontic education in the Philippines, both in the undergraduate and postgraduate programs,” he said. Recently, the APO has been furthering this commitment to the postgraduate programs through the Philippine Board of Orthodontics (PBO), the examination and accreditation arm of the APO. Of the four existing university-based postgraduate orthodontic programs in the Philippines, the PBO, at this time, has accredited the programs at the Centro Escolar University and the University of the Philippines. As of 2012, APO graduate student membership status is granted only to those full-time students enrolled in the PBO-accredited programs. In January 2012, three of these students passed the PBO Written Examination; upon their graduation, they may apply for membership in the APO. “Through the accreditation, the PBO seeks to partner with the orthodontic graduate programs so that their graduate students can integrate their orthodontic education with the PBO examination process,” said Dr. Robert Eustaquio, chairman of the PBO. “This would streamline their certification process as part of their professional career growth. Ours is a work in progress, and we aspire to follow the WFO Guidelines for Postgraduate Orthodontic Education. “It is my hope that participation in the PBO examinations will be a sought-after ‘rite of spring’ and professional distinction as part of the orthodontist’s career and personal growth,” he said. In November 2011, the PDA recognized the APO as the Most Outstanding Specialty Affiliate Chapter during its 2011 Awards Night. The PDA also recognized Dr. Tan as the Most Outstanding Specialty Affiliate President. “Truly, 2011 was a very busy year for the APO, and we are The Philippine Dental Association (PDA) recognized the Association of Philippine Orthodontists (APO) as the Most Outstanding Specialty Affiliate Chapter in 2011. The PDA also recognized Dr. Roberto Tan, president of the APO, as the Most Outstanding Specialty Affiliate President. Here, Dr. Tan (center) accepts the awards from PDA representatives. The PDA Awards Night was held Nov. 20, 2011. so blessed,” Dr. Tan said. “While we bask in the goals achieved and requirements met in 2011, we cannot help but wonder what is in store for us in 2012.” To learn more about the APO, go to www.apo.com.ph. The website for the PBO is www.pbo.ph. Flooding interferes with Thai Association of Orthodontists’ 2011 Scientific Meeting In 2011, Thailand encountered months of heavy rains. Late in the year, flooding in northern Thailand had reached historic levels. By October, the city center of Bangkok, Thailand, was threatened. Faced with uncertainties caused by this growing natural disaster, the Thai Association of Orthodontists (ThaAO) postponed its 2011 Scientific Meeting in November to Feb. 13-15, 2012. The ThaAO made its decision Nov. 1, 2011. “We were very fortunate that all invited speakers, our members, trade exhibitors, the hotel, etc., all understood the situation,” said Dr. Somchai Satravaha, president of the ThaAO, noting that the meeting venue, the Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Center at CentralWorld, in Bangkok was not flooded. “We were then able to take necessary measures and got through this situation without much difficulty.” The meeting drew 265 attendees and featured several international speakers, including Dr. Mauricio Gonzalez-Balut; Dr. Guillermo Perez Cortez; Dr. Kenneth Kai; Dr. Rebecca Poling; Sarah Pompa, RDA; Dr. Mogan Rogers; Dr. Christopher Roncone; Dr. Glenn Sameshima; and Dr. Ray Sugiyama. To assist others who were affected by the flooding, the ThaAO members also donated to the Thai Red Cross. Dr. Satravaha reported that some of the ThaAO members’ homes and/or offices were flooded. The organization reached out to those members living in the flooded areas, but none requested help from the ThaAO. “Most of us were on high alert, monitored the situation and did what we thought would be best to prevent or to minimize the damage that might be caused by the flood,” Dr. Satravaha said. “We are very fortunate that things are now, more or less, back to normal.” In December 2011, the ThaAO was able to resume its volunteer program that assists cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients in northeastern Thailand. On a monthly basis, ThaAO volunteers travel to the CLP care center at the Maharaj Hospital in the province of Nakhon Ratchasima to provide orthodontic care to the CLP patients. Due to flooded roads, the orthodontists could not travel to the hospital during the months of October and November. “The children were very happy to see us again (in December),” Dr. Satravaha said. “They surely missed us! We missed them, too." The ThaAO will hold its next Scientific Meeting July 16-18, 2012, at the Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Center at CentralWorld, in Bangkok. The theme of the meeting is “Celebrating the ThaAO’s 30 Years in Style.” To learn more about the ThaAO, go to www.thaiortho.org. Excessive flooding in Bangkok, Thailand, forced the Thai Association of Orthodontists (ThaAO) to postpone its November 2011 Scientific Meeting until February 2012. The conference program included several international speakers. Pictured here, from left, are Dr. Opas Wiwatworakul, Dr. Guillermo Perez Cortez (speaker), Dr. Narumol Taweesedt, Dr. Rebecca Poling (speaker), Dr. Kenneth Kai (speaker), Dr. Somchai Satravaha, Dr. Ray Sugiyama (speaker), Dr. Tanan Jaruprakorn, Sarah Pompa (speaker), Dr. Prinya Pathomkulmai, Dr. Tasanee Wangsrimongkol, Dr. Pornkana Asavanamuang, Dr. Nicolas Salesse, Dr. Thanatpiya Somsuk, and Dr. Nisa Chittiwatanapong. Scientific journal of the Japanese Orthodontic Society celebrates 80th anniversary The Japanese Orthodontic Society (JOS) published the first issue of its official scientific journal in 1932, six years after the founding of the JOS. Eighty years later, the journal, now known as Orthodontic Waves, continues to flourish and is now published in both English and Japanese. From the beginning, the journal offered articles that pertained to both orthodontic clinical and basic research. In 1998, the JOS renamed the journal Orthodontic Waves (ODW). Since 2004, the ODW has been divided into two separate issues — an English version and a Japanese version. The English edition is published four times a year, and the Japanese edition is published three times a year. “The role of an official journal of academic societies is crucial to providing news of latest technologies and developing trends in relevant fields,” said Dr. Isao Saito, editor-in-chief of ODW. “Keeping this responsibility in mind, ODW would also like to provide as many invaluable and informative articles as possible for subscribers with a view to serve as the leading orthodontic journal, especially in the Asian market. For the past four years, manuscripts have been submitted from various places outside Japan, such as the United States, Brazil, England, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Yemen.” Eight associate editors serve on the ODW Editorial Board, and 11 orthodontists from the United States, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan, Korea and Japan serve on the International Advisory Board. The journal was cited in MEDLINE from 1965 to 1990, but was accidentally deleted, said Dr. Saito, who is also the professor and chair of the Division of Orthodontics at Niigata University Graduate School of Medical and Dental Services in Japan. He expects that the journal will apply to be reinstated in the MEDLINE citations in 2014. 5 APOS publications honor global, regional orthodontic leaders Two years ago, the Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society (APOS), an affiliate regional organization of the WFO, founded two online publications ― APOS Trends in Orthodontics, a scientific journal, and APOS News, a newsletter. To mark this milestone, the editors of the APOS publications honored Dr. Roberto Justus, president of the WFO, and Dr. LOH Kai Woh, president of the APOS, for their service to the orthodontic specialty.
