Skills All levels contain activities that cover the four essential skills for second language acquisition: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. In terms of reading, most of the activities are related to comprehending the plot and script of the play. The aim is for students to organize and identify the correct sequence of events (e.g., introduction and conflict). In regard to writing, students will be able to express their own feelings, imagination or creativity, using vocabulary from the play and appropriate grammatical structures for the corresponding skill level. With respect to listening, all activities are focused on the songs of the play. We recommend working on them before watching Freya to acquire specific vocabulary and deeper information about the characters and their motives. Finally, concerning speaking, oral activities are suggested. Most of them can be solved in pairs or small groups of three people. These will help students put the language into practice and know other students’ opinions and feelings on the play, as a way to reflect on emotions and experiences. Freya, A Viking Story A raging storm of wind and snow falls upon a little medieval village. We find Freya, a brave young girl, alone at home and struggling to protect her house from the menacing weather. At the same time, three Vikings are also trapped in this cruel storm. The fierce twins, Ragnar and Runa, can’t find their way through the heavy snow. Accompanying the brother and sister is Erik, a sailor in pursuit of his long-dreamt adventures at sea. Seeking shelter, they arrive at Freya’s house and beg for her help. She is hesitant to receive these strangers but overcomes her fears and welcomes them into the warmth of her home. Erik is mesmerized by Freya’s beauty and kind heart, making him rapidly forget about the storm. Ragnar and Runa, on the other hand, are eager for the storm to end so they may resume their journey. Ragnar soon notes an old precious item amongst Freya’s belongings, and can’t be more excited with his finding: The Kraken’s Dagger. An old legend talks about the Kraken, a dreadful monster that lives in the Northern Seas. No one who hears, feels or sees the beast is able to survive. Only the one who possesses The Kraken’s Dagger can escape alive from the tentacles of this vicious creature. But for Freya, the great value of this little blade is very different in nature. The dagger once belonged to Freya’s father, and is therefore a way to keep his memory alive in her heart. Once the storm is over, Ragnar, Runa and Erik decide to continue their journey. Erik and Freya, who have now become close, are sad to say goodbye. They can only hope for their paths to cross again in the future. The three leave, but Ragnar comes back into Freya’s house and, without being seen, he steals The Kraken’s Dagger. Alone once again, Freya is devastated upon discovering that her father’s dagger is missing. In addition to the theft itself, she is also heartbroken by the suspicion that Erik may have been responsible for it. Determined to recover what was taken from her, Freya embarks on an adventure, barely armed with her noble heart and a fear-inspiring legend. She is on her own, and in the times of Vikings, the dangers are many. THE STORM Lightning striking, Strong wind blowing, Thunder roaring, Grey clouds, Announcing the break of the storm. With its breath it can rip your sail, It’s as strong as a giant whale. Here’s a dagger of a special kind Forged long ago in a mysterious land. It’s the only weapon on earth That could threaten the Kraken’s life. The Kraken! One! It’s roaring to let you know it’s near. The Kraken! Two! Its tentacles are sticky, long and quick. The Kraken! Three! Its breath smells like rotten fish. The Kraken! Four! Its eyes are fire in the night. The Kraken! Five! It’s here. The Kraken! One, two, three, four… Bye bye! The Kraken! One! It’s roaring to let you know it’s near. The Kraken! Two! Its tentacles are sticky, long and quick. The Kraken! Three! Its breath smells like rotten fish. The Kraken! Four! Nothing in life is just black or white, This legend has more than one side. The Kraken can sense if you own a kind heart And will protect you from evil and harm. Who Were the Vikings? The Vikings were people who lived in Norway, Sweden and Denmark more than a thousand years ago. They traveled by sea, looking for new lands, and settled in places where they found food and good living conditions. Follow the directions given below and complete the map. ⦿ Draw some arrows showing the sea routes Vikings took: From Norway to → Ireland From Sweden to → Scotland From Denmark to → England Discovering the Story These are scenes from the play, but they are mixed up. Look at the drawings and put them in the correct order by writing the number (1, 2, 3, or 4) inside the box. 1- Ragnar, Runa and Erik arrive at Freya’s house. 2- The three Vikings tell the Legend of the Kraken to Freya. 3- Ragnar steals the Kraken’s Dagger. 4- Freya starts her adventure looking for the dagger. The Legend of the Kraken A legend is a story that has been passed on from person to person and has important meaning or symbolism for the culture in which it originates. A legend usually includes an element of truth, or is based on historical facts, but with “mythical qualities” that may be somewhat unrealistic. ⦿ First, listen to the song “THE KRAKEN.” Then, write the legend of this mysterious sea-creature.
