TR The future is bright for the Precinct with design work commencing on Stages 1 and 2 of the Mainstreet Precinct Master Plan, more signage to be installed in the Northern end of Ocean Street, as well as the continuation of events like Santa’s Cave and New Year’s Eve celebrations which bring the Precinct to life. S2 Held at the National Wine Centre on Wednesday, 8 October 2014, the Awards recognised the great work done in mainstreets across the State, highlighting the importance of mainstreets and their role in the local community. “With one of the state’s lowest mainstreet vacancy rates and a number of exciting projects in the pipeline, Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct is well placed to capitalise on the success of this Award.” Mainstreet Coordinator’s Message (Page 2) “It’s also important to recognise the important contribution of the volunteers who tend the garden beds and remove graffiti, members of the community who support the Precinct, event organisers and various community groups. Santa’s Cave Santa will be very welcome again this year in Ocean Street. A cave will be available to him for the week beginning Monday 15th through to Saturday 20th December 2014. Welcome to the spring edition of our Streetchat Newsletter. By now I am sure you would have heard the exciting news that our Mainstreet was named the “Best Regional Mainstreet” at the 2014 Mainstreet SA Awards. This award is something that you should be extremely proud of as your constant support and willingness to get behind events and activities was an instrumental part of the success! Congratulations to you all, this award is a reflection of your hard work and dedication. Since the last edition of this newsletter there have been some fantastic events in the precinct including the 2014 Easter Hunt, which drew in a record crowd and had kids lining the street, bringing vibrancy, happy faces and general awareness of many businesses in the precinct. We also enjoyed our first Mainstreet networking night which was very well received. An achievement that I am personally proud of, which has taken quite a bit of time to produce, is the Mainstreet Business Directory brochure. This brochure has been designed as a tool to help all businesses within the precinct and encourage more people to the area. You can find the brochure at the Visitors Information Centre, Council front desk and most shops in the precinct. It has also been distributed to various real estate agents to go into various holiday homes, hotels and motels, caravan parks and doctors surgery waiting rooms. The brochure highlights just how many businesses we have in the Mainstreet Precinct of Victor Harbor. It also encourages people to “shop local” instead of travelling away from the town to buy that next pair of shoes or birthday present for a friend. Visit the Mainstreet first!! Everyone has a choice where they want to shop, what we need to do is encourage their choice to be here in the Mainstreet Precinct. As you will see in this newsletter we have more new faces in the street which is really exciting! Did you know that Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct currently has a vacancy rate of 3.6% with only four vacancies out of 110 tenancies? Only one of the premises has been vacant for more than six months. As a comparion Jetty Road Glenelg, King William Road Unley and the Norwood Parade have vacancy rates of 6%, 12% and 8% respectively. Even Rundle Street has six vacancies and with a vacancy rate of 5.66%.1 Lastly please don’t forget to vote in the 2014 Council elections. All the best! Kirsty Forbes 1 Reference “Savills, Spotlight Adelaide Suburban Retail report” 2 The initiative received extremely positive feedback from all who visited last year. Parents commented that they were extremely grateful for the generous donations made by various shops and it encouraged them to spend more time in the precinct and enjoy the shopping experience. Please contact Kirsty to discuss this years event if you would like to be involved… The more the merrier ho ho ho!!! FACADE GRANT SCHEME UPDATE By now most of you would be aware of the Mainstreet Precinct Façade Grant Scheme. Council is committed to supporting and improving the Mainstreet as an integral part of the areas economic and tourist potential; to demonstrate this commitment the Façade Grant Scheme was created. O KS Having three stages, increased numbers of show cars, outside dining and more interstate visitors than ever before added to the atmosphere within the festival precinct. B RE A REC Cars, dancing bands and record crowds are becoming a trademark of the Victor Harbor Rock n Roll Festival. Further details available from www.rocknrollfestival.com.au or via Facebook. 3 MAINSTREET PRECINCT MASTER PLAN MOVES AHEAD The proposed plans to revitalise Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct continue to progress with Council adopting the Mainstreet Precinct Master Plan as a guiding document for the transformation in May 2014. The Traders Networking Evening, held in March, was a great opportunity for the project team to present the draft plans to around 70 representatives from Mainstreet businesses for their comments and feedback. In addition to presenting to Traders, a public exhibition was held in the RSL and was attended by more than 150 people. 4 Council received almost 170 submissions from businesses and members of the community, and while the majority were supportive of the plan, there were a few common issues raised which included landscaping and planting options; vehicle/traffic parking and circulation (including the right hand turning lane closures into the Precinct from Torrens Street); and the need to upgrade private buildings, premises and façades. The issues raised will be addressed during the design and documentation phase of each stage of the Master Plan. Council is currently undertaking the detailed design and documentation for stages 1 and 2 of the Mainstreet Precinct Master Plan. This process will result in the completion of construction ready plans by the end of 2014. These plans will be used to leverage grant funding opportunities to deliver onground works. A summary of the consultation results and further information about this project is available at www.victor.sa.gov.au/mainstreet. These plaques mark locations of heritage significance and are a part of Council’s Heritage Interpretive Plaque project. Christmas Pageant 15 - 20 DECEMBER Santas Cave Thirty-two plaques have been installed so far and more will be rolled out in the coming months. The plaques reveal the story and history behind a selection of significant State and Local heritage buildings in Victor Harbor. Content for the plaques was compiled by Pat Uppill, member of both the City of Victor Harbor Heritage Advisory Committee and National Trust. Pat spent many hours touring, inspecting and researching buildings around the town centre in consultation with Council’s Heritage Advisor and the State Heritage Branch. Work has commenced on the next set of plaques which are due to be installed this financial year. The next part of the project will then be to develop a heritage trail within the town centre that links the buildings and places together. Next time you are out and about in Victor Harbor, take a moment to read the blue plaques and find out about the rich and diverse heritage of our area.
