Interview with Beppe Spadacini.
How did you and Yamamay start working together?
(He laughs)
“It was 1982, and Yamamay did not even exist.
I had just published Tropical Two, a book with airbrushed images
where there were some drawings of toucans.
One day I went to Milan and I saw my drawings on display in a
shop on beach towels! I got my lawyer to write to the company,
that kindly replied that it would have looked into it…
In the end, we discovered that someone had taken photos of
my designs in the book and resold them! When I met Luciano
Cimmino for the first time, he said that he was in love with the
prints, so I replied: << Excellent! Come to my office, because
this is what I do in life! >> And that’s how it all began!”
What did the designer who copied your prints say?
(He laughs out loud)
“I remember that he wrote to my lawyer saying: << But after all,
Mr. Spadacini did not invent the toucan! >>”
How would you define your drawings?
“My approach to drawing is similar to my approach to cooking.
I love cooking. I never follow a recipe, I create wonderful mixes
of all kinds. That is how I make my prints, they are a “fusion”, a
métissage of many styles and different subjects”.

FAMOUS. AFRICA, INDIA, INDONESIA, POLYNESIA, MALAYSIA, HAWAII, CENTRAL AMERICA, THE
AMAZON, THE CARIBBEAN, SRI LANKA AND THE SEYCHELLES. BEPPE’S DESIGNS ARE THE
RESULT OF FIFTY YEARS OF TRAVELLING, AND REPRESENT TROPICAL DREAMS AND MAGIC.
HE HAS PUBLISHED NINE BOOKS CONTAINING HIS TROPICAL IMAGES, THE FIRST IN 1982.
His affinity with Yamamay started long ago, before the company existed. Not just a working relationship, but a deep bond
of affection. Because, as Beppe told us in an interview, he only works with people with whom he has an affinity.
And if he doesn’t?
“Nothing!”
Where did the Tropical dream of Beppe Spadacini begin?
“I started working at the age of sixteen in a small company here in Como. After four years, I realised that I was very limited in
my work, I couldn’t offer more. So I said to myself: << This isn’t right, I have to do something about it >> and so I opened my
own studio. And so my travelling began. My first journey, when I was twenty-three, was in Africa. I remember coming home
with loads of material. I take photos, I take them in different ways, and then using them as a starting point, I begin to design.
I have millions of photos, I do not know where to put them…”

Can you tell us something about your books?
“My first book ever was: “Tropical”. It was published in 1982. At the time,
there were no books on the subject. There was nothing inspiring to be
found if you want to. That is how the project started and I am still continuing it…”
When you are in Italy, how do you live without your Tropical world?
(He laughs)
“I have created my own Tropical paradise in Cernobbio! My back garden
is becoming a forest…
I have started growing palm trees, banana trees, I have six or seven kinds
of palm trees…”
Our interview comes to an end and we say goodbye. Before we go, we cannot
help but ask for a gift from Beppe Spadacini. He gives us one of his amazing
original drawings. Thanks Beppe, coming to Como today has been a very

The soul of a Brazilian bikini is comfort. A feeling of

Amir, tell us about your new range designed especially
for Yamamay…
For this new collection, I thought I would bring back the
Brazilian vibrancy and coolness of the 70s. I have mixed
geometric designs with patterns that alternate black
and white with bright colours such as pink and orange.
The highlight of our new collection is the briefs:
characterized by a perfect cut, they give comfort
and at the same time, they enhance your figure.
Ruffles, simpler prints and geometric cuts are the elements
that I have developed in this amazing new collection.
This summer’s must-have for a woman with a
Tropical soul?
I reckon that this summer’s must-have is the brief that is
cut away at the back in the colours black, white, orange
or pink.
A word of advice to women who worry about trying
their bikinis on in summer?
In my view, the beach, pools and holidays are places
and times of the year when we should feel more free
and comfortable than the rest of the year.
A feeling of comfort and femininity is what every bikini
should give a woman.

When I won the first thing that I thought about is my country.
Colombia has waited for a second Miss Universe more than
50 years, so I really prepared myself to give them that joy.
When I heard my country’s name I felt so satisfied and
blessed that all my hard work paid off.
How important is it for you to be called “the most beautiful
in the universe?”
Every time I hear this question I laugh! It is impossible to
be the most beautiful woman existing. Every woman I have
met in my life has left me with a little piece of their beauty.
Can you describe yourself with just one adjective?

I love the bright color swimsuits. All the suits with prints and
cool details. But I’m very classic too. So the basic swimsuits

Let’s talk about food… which (tropical) fruit could you not
live without?
I can’t live without mango!
The Colombian dish you love most?
My favorite Colombian dish is “Arepa Con Huevo”.
Delicious!
How do you keep in perfect shape?
I try to eat protein every day and stay hydrated. You can
always find a bottle of water in my bag. I usually work out
3 times a week, but with my new schedule sometimes that is
hard to maintain, but I have learnt several new workout tips
to take on the road.
