8:15 am EARLY ARRIVAL ON WALK
TO SCHOOL DAY! We encourage all of
our Walker families to walk to school on
Wednesday, October 7th, at 8:15 am, and
then join us for some additional exercise as
we walk laps around the school building
until the school bell rings. Students who
walk to school will have their hand stamped
as they arrive and receive a sticker. It
would be great if every child at Walker
School earned a sticker by walking to
school!
Walk to School Day is an
international event that promotes physical
activity, walking safety and the community.
See attached flyer.

NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT NURSE:
Head lice are an extremely common problem among both girls and boys. It is not a
disease and not dangerous. All people are susceptible to head lice. Since children
between the ages of 3 and 11 are affected most often, we recommend all parents
routinely check their children’s heads for evidence of head lice and nits. It only takes a
few minutes. While the nits (lice eggs) look similar to dandruff, are small, and adhere
to the hair follicle near the scalp, nits will not fall off when flicked like dandruff.
Become suspicious if your child complains about itching or is observed scratching the
head frequently. Please notify the school nurse if you need a second opinion in
determining if your child has head ice or if you have treated your child for head lice.
Your child’s privacy will be maintained. The nurse will check your child upon
returning to school after treatment and again in 7 to 10 days. You will be notified if
there is an active case of lice or nits within 1/4 inch of the scalp. Additional
information is available on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website:
http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/
MILEAGE CLUB (Grades 1-5)
Exercise is a great way to get the brain ready for learning. If you’d like to
sign up your child for AM Mileage Club, please read the attached flyer
for more information. Return the Permission Slip to school by
Friday, 9/25/2015, to participate in this six-week session
beginning Wednesday, 9/30/2015 at 8am in the gym.
Don’t forget to send a water bottle!
GYM SHOES
If you have not sent a pair of gym shoes to keep at school with your child, please do so.
In order to keep each child safe and to keep the gym floor free of mud, it is important
that everyone keep a pair of mud-free gym shoes in their locker. Mrs. Marshall and
Mr. Kolar will be sending home notes with those students who do not have gym shoes
at school in their locker.

Dear Parents,
Walker students in grades 1 through 5 are invited to participate in Mileage Club.
Students will jog or walk a mile to earn a toe token. This is a great opportunity for students to
not only have fun but to improve their cardiovascular fitness as well. As many of you know,
exercise is a great way to get your brain ready to learn. We are excited to offer morning Mileage
Club to help our students get ready to learn again this year.
The morning session sessions will meet on Wednesdays from 8:00-8:30 on 9/30, 10/7*
10/14, 10/21, 10/28 & 11/4. This session will not be cancelled due to inclement weather. We will
meet in the gym. *We invite families to join their Mileage Club runner on October 7 outside to
help celebrate walk to school day with the rest of school.
Students will be given the opportunity to run 1-2 miles during each session. It is also
recommended that your child bring a water bottle to Mileage Club.
If you would like your child to participate, sign and complete the permission slip below.
The completed permission slip is due to Mrs. Marshall by Friday, September 25.
Sincerely,
Melissa Marshall (Ext. 7115)

Clarendon Hills Park District
Grades 2-5
The PARCC exam (Replaced the ISAT exam Spring 2015) takes advantage of technology by administering the exam on laptops. Some sections of the exam will require the student to provide summative answers. This translates to students TYPING their answers in some sections. Is your child prepared for this aspect of the exam? Clarendon
Hills Park District has partnered with Smart Starters, Inc. to offer Keyboarding Kids at Walker School. The class introduces students to true
keyboarding using downloaded documents, weekly assignments and
progress reports. Your child will develop the typing skills necessary for
academics and beyond.
