Alumni Success Stories Rick Bayless: From running a football to running a software company, 30 years later You could call Hugo native Rick Bayless the Moonlight Graham of football. Archie “Moonlight” Graham was a character from the 1982 novel “Shoeless Joe,” written by W.P. Kinsella, which was later made into the movie “Field of Dreams.” Graham was a young minor league baseball player who, in 1922, was brought up to the major leagues by the New York Giants right before the last game of the season. In that game, Graham saw one inning of play in the outfield but never got a chance to bat. The following season he was sent back down to the minors. Rather than try to work his way back up to the majors, Graham quit baseball and eventually became a doctor in his home town of Chisholm, Minn. Years later - according to the novel - in an Iowa cornfield that became a baseball field, Graham put to rest his lifelong regret of never having batted against a major league pitcher. In 1983, another small-town Minnesota kid found his own “field of dreams” in Iowa. It was called Kinnick Stadium. 2 Rick Bayless was a Forest Lake High School football and track star, but he was not recruited by many Division I college scouts. Rather than letting his dream of playing big-time college football fade away, he decided to attend the University of Iowa and, without a scholarship offer in hand, walked-on as a freshman. He was redshirted his first year, but by the time he was a junior Bayless was the Hawkeyes’ starting halfback. That year he became only the third running back in Iowa history to rush for 1,000 yards and the fourth ever to lead his team in both rushing and receiving yardage. He finished the 1986 season second in the Big Ten in rushing and was named Team MVP, First Team All-Big Ten and Honorable Mention All-America. His senior season was essentially lost to a knee injury, yet Bayless ended his career as Iowa’s 10th leading all-time rusher. He went undrafted in the 1988 NFL draft and, after ACL surgery, was forced to sit out the entire year. In 1989, the Minnesota Vikings took an interest in him and he was picked up as a free agent. Bayless spent five weeks on the Vikings’ active roster that year but - like Moonlight Graham - took the field only once. On Nov. 12, 1989, in Tampa Bay, Bayless entered the game as a special teams player. That was his only appearance on the field that season. The next year, he was invited back to training camp. He now had a big decision to make. “I had to think about how football was beating my body up and everything else,” Bayless said. “I didn’t feel that my opportunity was there for sports. I had just had a son, started a family, and all the other stuff, and I had to weigh it all out and see what was important to me.” Instead of returning for the 1990 season, Bayless - who had been plagued by injuries for much of his career - hung up his cleats, never having had the chance to carry a ball as an NFL running back. In the 30 years since his graduation from Forest Lake High School, Bayless has found success in a different career. No, he is not the famous chef named Rick Bayless. This Rick Bayless has taken advantage of his computer science degree and has been working in software development. Today, he is chief operating officer of Jaryba, a company located in Reno, Nev., that manages software that runs on modern super-computers. Local Partnerships: Joining together as a community Third annual Lake Fest features a full week of fun and graduation-related events What once was a two-day weekend celebration before the high school’s graduation ceremony has grown into a full week of community events. Lake Fest 2013 marks the third summer that Forest Lake Area Schools, the city of Forest Lake and the Forest Lake Area Chamber have teamed up to present a fun-filled collection of events from May 31 to June 6. Most of the events from last year’s highly-successful Lake Fest will be returning, including the popular “Build-A-Boat Challenge”, as well as the Bald Eagle Water Ski Show. Fishing Tournament The First Annual Grace Haines Memorial Fishing Tournament will be held during Lake Fest on June 1 from 8 a.m. - noon on Forest Lake. Rockin’ Hollywoods In the past, the Movie in the Park event was the Friday night kickoff to Lake Fest. Movie in the Park will continue, but this year it will follow a performance by the popular rock band The Rockin’ Hollywoods, held earlier in the evening. New events this year include a fishing tournament, a Friday performance of the Rockin’ Hollywoods and an exhibit by the Forest Lake Historical Society. Historical Society Exhibit The Forest Lake Historical Society will be promoting its new museum by displaying an exhibit at Lake Fest that features local schools in the Forest Lake area from 1850 until the 1980s. Hall of Fame Inductions New members will be inducted into both the Forest Lake Area Schools District Hall of Fame and into the newly-named Forest Lake Area High School Arts & Athletics Hall of Fame. The Arts & Athletics Hall of Fame will still include sports players and coaches, but now students and advisors who were standouts in other Minnesota State High School League sanctioned activities such as speech, debate and music will be included as well. A reception to honor both new and current hall of fame members will be held on June 4 at Forest Hills Golf Club at 6 p.m.. More information on Lake Fest is available at www.FL-LakeFest.com 3 The 2012-2013 School Year Success in and out of the classroom Outstanding achievements by students Students at Forest Lake Area Schools once again earned the pride and admiration of the community for excelling in the classroom and through a wide range of extracurricular activities.
