Dear Parents, Students, and MPHS Community:
Spring Break has come and gone and three-fourths of the school year has been completed. Our students and staff have
accomplished many remarkable things and brought many honors to our campus. Two of our students achieved National
Merit Finalist status, Cole Barber and Jessica Zhu. This honor places them among the top 1% of all graduating seniors across
America. Six other students achieved National Merit Commended status, Spencer Elliott, Bobby Hakimi, Lucas Hunter, Tim
Leach, Lauren McDonald, and Swaroon Sridhar. The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) notified us that MPHS
senior Caitlon Hartzel and junior Ashley Mutchek have been selected for membership. The Flinn Foundation has announced
this year's Flinn Scholarship winners and our two semi-finalists, Spencer Elliott and Swaroon Sridhar, made it to the very
top of the list. Spencer is a scholarship winner, one of only 20 in Arizona, and Swaroon is one of the top alternates selected.
Congratulations to all students on these honors.
Our dedicated MP staff leads our students to excel in the arts, on the athletic field, in the classroom and in many community
service activities. Congratulations to English teacher Christine Vanderpool who was selected the Educational Mentor of the
Year at the Ahwatukee Chamber Day of Champions. Fine Arts teacher Kim Bonogofski was honored by KNIX and Fulton
Homes as a Teacher of the Week and had her play selected to perform at the Arizona Thespian Society Junior Festival. Three
MP staff members are finalists for Diablos Educator Awards, Pete Rupp (Achievement), Suzanne Idler (Innovation) and Rosalie
Acuna (Class Act). Sponsor Julie Zahara and her hard working Key Club members exceeded their goal and collected 101
pints of blood with the help of United Blood Services. This potentially saves 303 lives. The Advanced Marketing Class taught
by Shauna Demers recently donated over $1900.00 to the Sandy Hook Elementary Fund from their Bonfire. In another effort
to help our environment the Sustainability Club is working with Phoenix Fibers to collect used clothing. These clothes are
used to help the needy. The clothes that cannot be donated are recycled to make insulation. The next drive will be held April
8th -22nd. Our campus celebrated the signing of student athlete letters of intent in football, baseball, lacrosse and swimming.
Senior Brantley Bell was crowned Mr. Pride at the annual junior class sponsored man-pageant that raises funds for the Child
Crisis Center and the prom. The Diversity Assembly featured guest speaker Alonzo Jones from ASU and many student
performers celebrating both the diversity and unity of our Pride Family, reflecting the hard work of sponsor Natasha Alston
and the student leaders of the Black Student Union.
Spring Break marked the end of the third quarter of 2012-2013 and you should be receiving report cards. It is extremely
important that you contact your son/daughter’s teachers if they have any grades that are not satisfactory. With 9 weeks
remaining, and final exams, students still have approximately 60% of their grade yet to earn. Reminder: Parentvue is a
great way to monitor your son/daughter’s academic progress. Our goal is that every student has a successful experience at
Mountain Pointe High School. If needed, please reach out to access one of the
many support services we offer, whether it be academics (ac lab and TOTEM
Tutoring) or social emotional (guidance support and help groups). In today’s
world the sky is the limit for our students, let’s all work together to keep
encouraging them to reach for the sky. As we continue to move forward this year
keep in mind our mission; Purpose, Pride, and Performance.

Incoming Freshman Parents Invited to
MPHS “Keys to Success” Workshops
Mountain Pointe is seeking to address the successful transition of
8th graders to the freshman year of high school. Research tells us
that this is a documented “pivotal time” for students. It is during
their freshman year that:
4the highest dropout rates are recorded.
4students are asked to make academic choices that launch them
on a four year plan to college, some other form of post- secondary
education or successful entrance into the workforce or military.
4students make important lifestyle choices that can lead them toward
self sufficiency.
4students are starting to make important transitions: middle school
to high school; adolescence to young adulthood; dependency to self
sufficiency.
In order to help every student reach their potential in this crucial
freshman year, Mountain Pointe has created a parent handbook,
PowerPoint presentation and communication workshops for the
parents of our incoming 8th graders. Principal Bruce Kipper worked
with outstanding faculty leaders to create this innovative program
that started in 2007. This information comes from our Guidance
department, Gifted Program and includes "keys to success" in our
core subject areas.
Each workshop is led by Assistant Principal, Mary Keller, with a
panel made of administrators and teachers who answer questions
from the 8th grade parents. There are five workshops scheduled
this spring for incoming freshman parents to select from:

H.U.M.A.N. Healthy Vending
Machines Visit Campus
Attendance Procedure
Mountain Pointe students were treated to a taste test for healthy
vending snacks on January 25th. H.U.M.A.N. stands for Helping
Unite Man And Nutrition and is a new vending program that features Clif bars, Pop Chips, Kashi snacks and juices, milk or water.
The machines use up to 50% less energy and have 40% more
capacity to hold products. Students at both lunches gave their
opinions on their favorite choices. Two new machines will join
campus in the spring.
The following is a summary of the Mountain Pointe Attendance
procedure:

Earn College Credit
While in High School !
The benefits of Dual Enrollment include the following:
 Earn an AA Degree before you graduate from high school.
 This is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to
take a college level class taught by college-certified high
school instructors. These instructors utilize college level curriculum and textbooks so that students simultaneously
earn both high school and college credit for the class.
 Credit is awarded immediately after passing the course. Go
to the AZTransfer website to check credit transferability to
in-state colleges and universities at: www.aztransfer.com.
 Students are more engaged in their courses
and better positioned to succeed in college.
 Transfer credits allow students to graduate
from college in 2 – 3 years.
 Families can save $$$ in college tuition fees.

Keep the Beat Going
MPHS Band Spring Semester Project
Mountain Pointe High School Band Program and Booster Organization is currently involved in a community service project for the
spring semester 2013 with a goal of raising $5000 to help replace
music supplies for a K-8 public school in New Jersey that our band
program has adopted. The New Jersey school sustained irreparable
damage in late October when Hurricane Sandy hit and completely
flooded their first floor under 7 feet of water. Among all the losses
the school sustained, all music supplies (instruments, rhythm sticks,
music stands, percussion instruments, sheet music, etc.) were lost
and some students even lost their personal instruments as the
storm surge flooded the school.
We have had a very successful start to this project. We have met
one third of our $5,000 goal. Donations directly to the school's
music program and for our silent auction have come as far away
as Iowa, Pennsylvania, California and the Phoenix area.
Fundraisers have included a Dine-In/Take Out Restaurant night at
Florencia's on February 20th and a car wash at Burger King on February 23rd. Another Dine-In/Take Out Restaurant day will be held
at Streets of New York on April 11th from 10:30 am–9:00 pm, and
ending our fundraising efforts will be a Silent Auction on April 11th
from 6:00 pm–9:00 pm during our Wind Ensemble and Ahwatukee
Foothills Concert Band combined concert. In addition, stay tuned
for another Krispy Kreme donut sale before school in March.

Spirit of Community Bon Fire
for Sandy Hook Elementary
On December 14th 2012, tragedy struck the nation when a lone
gunman opened fire inside Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing 26 and injuring others. At the beginning of the school year,
our Advanced Marketing class was given the task of planning,
organizing, and executing a service project that would benefit the
community in some way for our DECA service project. So, after
much deliberation, our class decided we would plan a community
bon fire at our school whose proceeds would be donated a local food bank. But, after the shooting we decided that this tragic
event was our opportunity to show the true American spirit of
coming together and helping those in need. From there forward,
we developed our bon fire into a memorial for the victims of the
Sandy Hook Shooting. Our goal was ultimately to raise money for
the community in order to help fund the building of a memorial
and/or scholarship in the name of one of the victims, as well as
hold a memorial for the victims at the end of the event. In the end,
nearly 400 members of the school and community attended the
event helping raise over $2,000.

MP junior Sara Abrams coordinated a project called "Hearts for

serving our country. In partnership with "Packages From Home"
the first two weeks of January, Sara set up a table during lunch and
collected valentines and provided supplies for students to walk by
and create a note or card.
Packages From Home president Kathleen Lewis sent a certificate
of thanks to Mountain Pointe on behalf of Sara’s project and stated,
“With Patriots like you we can provide the most needed of comfort items to our deserving troops who are serving in harms way
every day.”
Congratulations to the following Performing Arts Academy students who
were selected for the West Region Honor Band, Choir, and Orchestra. These
students auditioned along with approximately 1,500 students from our Region
and were chosen to perform last month at the Honor Festival. This select
group of musicians will be eligible to audition for the All-State Honor Festival
to be held at NAU in Flagstaff in April. Please congratulate these students
wish them luck!
Jacob Rak-Kinonen Wants your Jeans!
Over the last three years junior Jacob Rak-Kinonen has been collecting Jeans for Teens. It started at Centennial when he found out
about the program through Aeropostale and Do Something.org.
He collected at school and church and ended up with 800 pairs
of jeans his first year. By year three it was almost 7000. Jacob
got involved because the jeans go to help homeless teens and the
Haiti earthquake victims. After the first year, he was hooked and
continues to do whatever it takes to get those jeans…and to make
a difference in the world.

Annual Women’s Mentor Day
Inspires MP's Young Ladies
On Friday, February 1st, 2013 DECA and the Business, Family, and Culinary
Academy at Mountain Pointe High School hosted a very unique event for 81
deserving young female students. This event is our annual Women's Mentor Day.
The purpose of the day is to inspire and motivate our young ladies to reach for
their dreams, pursue their interests, and invest in their futures.
Twelve professional women role models who are willing to meet with our young
ladies to discuss opportunities for women in the workplace, tackling life's challenges, and the importance of education serve as mentors for this event. The
format of the day offers students four, small 40 minute workshops presented by
our volunteer professional women mentors. During the workshops, these mentors will summarize their careers, college experiences, and how they confronted
the challenges of their personal and professional lives. These women will share
their stories of how crucial it is to be persistent and achieve one’s goals. Then,
the mentors give the students the opportunity to ask questions and have group
discussions. The day also includes two brief general
sessions, breakfast, and lunch.
The strength of this event is that it draws on the
experience and expertise of local professional
women fulfilling their roles as mentors. The day
provides an important link to the community
especially for female students of backgrounds
where support and encouragement of pursuing higher education may not be common. The
women representing DECA, Business, Family, and
Culinary Academy are strongly committed to this
program. They want the girls to see the number
and diversity of women in the work force.
Activities
Inspiring and motivating our young ladies to reach or their dreams,
pursue their interests, and invest in their futures.

Black Belt Tutors Train with
Mesa Community College
Jacob Rak-Kinonen
Wants your Jeans!
Black Belt Tutors are the specialists for a new AIMS / SAT / ACT
tutoring program at Mountain Pointe. Using a specialized curriculum developed by Mesa Community College professor Gene
Fazio – the Black Belt Tutors are trained to help students who want
to score higher on the AIMS and standardized testing for college.
The tutors earn a college credit and a chance at scholarships for
taking more college hours. Tutors work during Academic Lab on
Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursdays in the
cafeteria. Funding for the program was
provided by Mesa Community College.
Over the last three years junior Jacob
Rak-Kinonen has been collecting Jeans
for Teens. It started at Centennial
when he found out about the program through Aeropostale and
DoSomething.org. He collected at school and church and ended
up with 800 pairs of jeans his first year. By year three it was almost
7000. Jacob got involved because the jeans go to help homeless
teens and the Haiti earthquake victims. After the first year, he was
hooked and continues to do whatever it takes to get those jeans…
and to make a difference in the world.
Future tutors or interested tutees
can speak with Ms. Goolsby
about getting involved.

the spring tests.
