Local companies add their stroke to the history of the game.

T
he golf we know today evolved
from sticks or primitive clubs used
to hit pebbles along a sandy dune
by the seashore or rabbit runs in Scotland’s
Kingdom of Fife. Since the ole’ stick and
ball games of yore, the technology of the
game has changed exponentially.
Tradition stepped aside in the 1850s,
when sticks were replaced with iron-headed
clubs and the introduction of steel shafts
in the United States. Advancements in the
game itself began as early as the 1930s,
when the United States Golf Association
set standards for the weight and size of the
golf ball. These standards impacted the
way the game was played, which, in turn,
impacted the technology of the ball and
ultimately the club.
Graphite became popular in the 1970s
because of its lightness and strength, and
the movement of the first metal “wood”
18
FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
prompted further developments. Metal has
now completely replaced wood—making
wood club sets a nostalgic collectible for
antique dealers and museums.
Technology such as graphite shafts
and lightweight titanium heads have
also changed the size of the club head.
The strength of these once space-age
materials now allow the face of the club
to be thinner, increasing the spring-like
effect of the clubface on to the ball and
the distance the ball will travel. In fact, in
an effort to maintain the challenge of the
game, the USGA has recently limited the
spring-like effect, known as the coefficient
of restitution (COR), to .83 and the
maximum club head size to 460-cc.
A pioneer in golf technology, Richard C.
Helmstetter began his career as a billiard
cue designer, and later became chief club
designer for the Callaway Golf Company
at its headquarters in Carlsbad. With the
help of Glenn Schmidt, the company’s
master toolmaker, the company developed
the original Big Bertha driver using a large
volume (190-cc) steel club head. The Big
Bertha grew to 290-cc in 1997. Through
the Big Bertha, Callaway contributed to a
page in the history of the swing.
The local company continues to
develop technology that changes the
game. Available this month, the RAZR
Fit Xtreme Driver is the newest product
in Callaway technology. Headlining the
adjustable driver is a powerful new Speed
Frame Face Technology that optimizes
stiffness and stress distribution across the
face for more efficient energy transfer.
“The RAZR Fit Xtreme Driver is
worthy of its extreme designation,” said
Dr. Alan Hocknell, SVP of research and
development at Callaway Golf. “We
January 2013
worked tirelessly to improve on the best
distance characteristics of our longest
drivers, and the result is incredibly fast ball
speed off the Speed Frame Face, plus the
lowest CG of any adjustable driver in golf.
It will not be matched.”
Speed Frame Face Technology is a
combination of VFT and Hyperbolic Face
Technology, resulting in stress distribution
across the titanium face for a larger,
more consistent sweet spot and increased
ball speed. It also saves weight that is
redistributed in the clubhead to improve
the center of gravity (CG) and maximize
inertia, which leads to optimized ball
flight and forgiveness. Also featured is a
tighter bulge radius than its predecessor,
providing a more preferred look at address,
along with more consistent sidespin and
dispersion.
The crown of the RAZR Fit Extreme
is a forged composite of more than seven
million turbostratic carbon fibers, which
is lighter than titanium. Its OptiFit Hosel
technology now allows one to manually
adjust the shaft, grip and loft on this driver.
Callaway maintains that the personal
adjustment on the face angle—open,
closed or square—improves the accuracy
and trajectory of the shot from either the
tee or the fairway. The OptiFit Weights
can also be adjusted to shift the clubhead’s
CG to promote either draw or neutral
ball flights. Golfers now dial in their ideal
settings and hit drives like never before.
The RAZR Fit Xtreme features two tourgrade shafts as stock offerings. The primary
shaft, the Aldila Trinity, combines Aldila’s
three patented design technologies—RIP,
S-Core and Micro Laminate—into a
single shaft design. A secondary offering,
the Matrix 7M3 Black Tie, is a heavier,
lower launching, lower spinning option for
higher head speed and higher spin players.
Neither shaft will be modified from the
product available in the aftermarket.
So in effect, changing your driver will
amend a bad swing, which proves yet again,
technology may soon surpass human
ability. Mary, Queen of Scots—who legend
has it was a huge fan of golf—would have
given her head for this driver.
Another respectable authority on golf
technology also headquartered in Carlsbad
is TaylorMade-Adidas, which continues
to offer stiff competition in the market.
Gary Adams, the inventor of metalwood,
founded TaylorMade in McHenry, Ill., in
1979, acquired by Adidas in 1997.
Via a global webcast on Oct. 23, Mark
King, current president and CEO of
TaylorMade, officially introduced what
he calls the biggest iron innovation to
FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
19
TECH DRIVE | Luxury | Lifestyle | Living
date: the RocketBladez. These irons
boast a new technology that promotes
high-launching, long-straight and quickstopping performance for golfers of all
abilities.
The key technology is its “speed pocket,”
which was inspired by the distanceenhancing benefits of the RocketBallz
fairway woods and Rescue clubs.
Altogether, the RocketBladez set consists
of 11 individually designed clubheads,
each tailored in size, shape and feature to
maximize distance and control.
“Metalwoods
have
advanced
tremendously
since
TaylorMade
introduced the first one in 1979,” King
said. “There hasn’t been a significant
advancement in irons since the perimeterweighted cavityback, which was introduced
more than 50 years ago.”
The speed-pocket advantage is especially
effective on impacts made low on the
face. TaylorMade studies indicate that 68
percent of iron shots by amateur golfers
20
FINEsd.com | facebook.com/FINEmagazines
are mishits below the center of the face.
The speed pocket helps to increase ball
speed and distance on those low-face
mishits significantly. Tour professionals will
also benefit from the RocketBladez Tour
model also being offered.
“We created RocketBladez irons for
amateurs, but when our Tour Staff pros
tried it, they wanted it,” King explained.
The RocketBladez also boasts an ultrathin clubface with improved inverted
cone design. The speed pocket is filled
with specially formulated polyurethane
developed by 3M that quiets vibration
without slowing or inhibiting the flex
of the pocket. It also keeps debris out.
Both models consist of strong, maraging
stainless steel. Not only is it 11-percent
thinner, but it adds up to 10 COR points
to the face compared to Burner 2.0 irons
and promotes less drop-off in ball speed
on impacts low on the face, where the
majority of iron mishits occur. That means
the COR low on the face is higher than it
January 2013
has ever been in a TaylorMade iron.
Both
amateur
and
professional
RocketBladez models have low and
centered CG location and external and
internal hosel-bending notches. The irons
have now been fine tuned to a lower CG by
2.5 mm and centered location on the face
by shortening the hosel to save weight and
then redistributed to all the strategic areas
within the head. Also featured, is a distinct
external notch on the outer, rear side of
the hosel and internal notch inside that
together makes it easy to bend the head to
change the lie angle.
On the Apollo 14 mission on the moon in
1971, Alan Shepard fitted a six-iron head
to the handle of a lunar sample collection
device and launched two golf balls over
a mile into the distance. A similar shot
on earth would hang in the air 25 to 30
seconds, and travel just 900 yards. But
with the improvements created every year,
today’s technology may soon overcome the
lack of atmosphere on the moon.

Good Will Hunting
The search for resale fashion goes beyond thrift.
By Whitney Butler | All photos used with permission
O
nce upon a time, people turned up their noses at resale
fashion. But in this era of style- and eco-consciousness,
the discerning have learned that prejudice against
consignment is simply a crime against fashionistas.
Gently worn clothing and accessories are by no means done
making statements after just one memorable wear. A vintage pink
Chanel pleated skirt paired with a leather jacket and heels looks just
as chic today as it did on the previous owner, who may have worn it
with a white cashmere sweater and pearls. It’s a fun and affordable
trend that has taken the runway by storm.
So, where does one discover such stylish savings? The National
Association of Retail and Thrift Shops reports there are more than
25,000 resale and consignment stores across the United States, and
more developing online. Consignment and resale boutiques have
enjoyed growth over the economic recession, as stylish consumers
seek creative means to stretch their spring wardrobe budget. Resale
is a multi-billion dollar industry, and it’s easy to see why: Designer
brands at enormous savings.
“There are two huge advantages to consignment,” said Marie
Green, regional merchandise manager and director of training for
The RealReal, an online consignment boutique. “People can easily
gain room for their new fashions, while making money clearing out
their closet.” Since the therealreal.com opened in June 2011, it has seen
tremendous growth, celebrating its first month of seven-figure sales
last year. The secret to its success is its unique white-glove customer
experience.
“Our clients here in San Diego have fabulous closets, great style
and take advantage of our strict designer list,” Green said. “Some
of our clients carry this list with them as they shop for new clothes,
so later, the clothes can easily be consigned on The RealReal.”
Green’s clients are making money and keeping style pace by
selling their gently-worn designer fashions with a level of customer
service parallel to none in the industry. Not only does The RealReal
provide home consultations to eligible consignees, it also handles all
of the products and photography, and markets the goods with up to
70-percent cash return after the online sale.
It’s great for consigners, but it’s even better for bargain hunters.
“Every Friday, women on the West Coast get up extra early to
score great deals in our Friday handbag sale,” Green said. Since

she began working for the company in
early 2012, Green notes that the quantity
and quality of items being sold online has
greatly improved.
If shopping online isn’t your fancy, San
Diego is home to an array of consignment
and resale boutiques detailed to various
tastes and budgets. But if we’re talking
the crème de la crème of designer brand
names, look no further than the showroom
floor at My Sister’s Closet in Pacific Beach.
One of three original founding sisters,
Tess Loo is both a devoted consignment
shopper and the chief fashion stylist for My
Sister’s Closet. Founded in Phoenix more
than two decades ago, this consignment
boutique specializes in designer fashion for
men and women, as well as accessories and
furniture.
“It’s a Cinderella experience,” said Loo,
describing customers’ excitement about
finding one-of-a-kind pieces at tremendous
savings. “A decade ago, people had an
attitude towards recycled fashion… People
are more open-minded these days, and
more conscious of their spending.”
My Sister’s Closet awards up to 50
percent on consigned pieces, and boasts
two seasonal blowout sales with up to
70 percent savings. The store will also
be cleaning out its closet this month, as
it departs from winter wear and looks
forward to new designer spring fashions.
Classic style is never defined by the
amount of money it takes to get there. A
mix of contemporary and vintage fashion
requires intention and perhaps some luck,
but it is always affordable. Men and women
looking for great style know that a fabulous
wardrobe doesn’t have to translate into full
price. Discovering and hand selecting each
piece transcends the typical department
store convenience and replaces it with an
exciting hunt for the perfect little black
dress from Versace, Missoni or Chanel.
It’s more than just an opportunity to save
money—it’s a closet of endless possibility,
worn with a unique confidence won only
from the hunt.

he fresh start a new year brings
often inspires changes to improve
health and better nurture mind,
body and spirit. It’s as if the annual change
turns on an inner light that illuminates just
how fragile and beautiful life can be. And
sometimes a little light is all it takes.
Located in the heart of North Park,
Casa de Luz, or “House of Light,” is an
exceptional place that follows the tradition
of macrobiotics, a dietary regimen. While
this San Diego location opened in 2011,
Casa de Luz got its start in Austin, Texas,
as far back as 1991. And the background
of its program goes back even further.
“Our community center at Casa de Luz
has a history that dates back to the ancient
Far East, and then through Hippocrates
as a way to universal health and longevity,
which encompasses the largest possible

view of not only diet, but also all the
dimensions of human life, natural order,
cosmic evolution and our interaction with
all things,” said Eduardo Longoria, the
center’s steward. “Community building
is our objective, not only with people, but
a whole connection with nature and the
universe.”
More similar to a church than a
restaurant, Casa de Luz offers patrons
a dose of healing organic, vegan and
gluten-free meals through a conscious
and meaningful dining experience. Guests
are encouraged to dine more than once,
and even take some cooking classes to
experience the true benefits of eating in a
holistic and sustainable manner.
“We are not simply about a diet, though
that is the first step and usual introduction
to this way of life for many people,”
Longoria explained. “We embrace
behavior, thought, breathing, exercise,
relationships, customs, cultures, ideas and
consequences, as well as an individual and
collective way of life found throughout the
world.”
On a mission to educate, the cooks at
Casa de Luz source, prepare from scratch,
and serve only the very best locally grown,
organic, whole-food and plant-based meals
designed to heal and optimize wellness.
There is never a trace of chemical
fertilizers, pesticides or preservatives. From
the local organic farmer who delivers its
food, to the staff members, chefs, teachers
and guests, every one is part of a family
who learns from one another and shares
in the excitement of each opportunity to
support optimal health and wellbeing. “We

the humanity health care crisis,” Longoria
said. “I believe the closer people get to the
earth, starting with the microorganisms
in the soil to the water and minerals, the
happier they will be.”
Having great relationships with local
organic farmers, Longoria says that the
more perishable the produce, the more it
needs to be grown close to home. “Grains
and legumes can come from further away
because they can last a long time,” he
explained. “Our location in Austin gets much
of its produce from California, since Texas
cannot supply them with enough organics.
We are fortunate to have such a remarkable
growing climate, soil, and most importantly,
great farmers.”
Simple can be delicious, and with more
than enough community seating on the
lower level, guests will feel a sense of kinship
while getting a dose of what Longoria
calls “high vibrational healing foods.” The
menu changes daily with fun cuisine themes
during the week that include Italian on
Mondays, Asian on Tuesdays, raw foods on
Wednesdays, Latin on Thursdays, Chef ’s
Choice on Fridays and Saturdays, and South
American on Sundays.
Favorable choices for breakfast include
brown rice cakes with strawberry-tahini
sauce, Anasazi beans with hominy, or a tasty
veggie sauté with sweet potato, zucchini and
parsnips. For lunch, opt for the miso soup or
the organic mixed greens with beets, radishes
and carrots topped with walnut balsamic
dressing. For dinner, the zucchini fettuccine
is an excellent choice, coated with a creamy
cashew Alfredo sauce and roasted garlic
lentils. Or try the veggie tacos served with
bok choy, red onion, sweet potato, zucchini
and crimini mushrooms in a pepita cilantro
green sauce. Desserts range from muffins,
cookies and truffles, to pudding, raw mint
bars, apple crisp and even a silky berry
cheesecake made with nut cream. Beverage
choices include exotic teas, a refreshing juice
bar, beer and sake, organic wines, and a
rotating selection of smoothies including
flavors of Leafy Green, Chocolate Ginger
and Pumpkin Harvest Pecan.
“Delicious is a point of view crafted by your
habits,” Longoria said. “People that make
the decision to eat this way may not like it at
first, but will eventually come to only want to
eat this way.”
The illumination comes from the mix of
flavors. “Our offerings are about the dance
between the different flavors, colors and
textures, and once people get what we are
all about, they will appreciate the whole
symphony,” Longoria said.” One could
say that the violin or the French horn is
their favorite instrument of the orchestra,
but when the music is played, there is the
splendor of wholeness.”

said Damian Pascuzzo, lead architect and designer
in charge of the $50-million renovation.
The Torrey Pines golf courses have also have
taken a place of prominence within the greater
golfing community. All 36 holes on the Torrey
Pines syndicate were designed by master architect
William P. Bell, and were finished by his son,
William F. Bell, in 1957. Built on the site of a
World War II military camp, Torrey Pines is split
into two sections: the north and the south. High
up on the bluffs, the North Course boasts a clear
ocean view from the greens and fairways. The
South Course, redesigned by Rees Jones in 2001,
borders the cliff line along the sea for the fourth,
fifth and sixth holes.
The South Course is the bread and butter of the
Torrey Pines golf experience. Host of the Farmers
Insurance Open and chosen as the site of the 2008
U.S. Open, the course is known as an exceptionally
scenic—and an exceptionally difficult—round

ocean, all of the greens have a corresponding
downward slope. The sixth hole, which borders
the ocean and has little to no protection from the
strong winds that blow onshore in the afternoons,
can be particularly challenging to most golfers,
though it is unquestionably beautiful.
Fortunately, the difficulty of the weather
conditions is mitigated somewhat by excellent
course maintenance. The fairway is laid with
Kikuyu grass, overseeded with rye. Kikuyu is
a very thick and sticky species of grass, which
allows players to comfortably overcompensate on
shots where some degree of spin is required. The
grass is also renowned for providing surprisingly
good lies on the rough, when it is not burying the
ball altogether. The whole course represents an
excellent balance between accessibility and a good
solid challenge.
And since the bite of winter in San Diego is a
toothless one, there will be nothing to keep you
away from the challenge of conquering a worldclass course.

uring the winter season, Coachella Valley becomes a worldclass golf destination. It has a feel—a vibe that draws the golf
enthusiast to its playground. With more than 120 courses, all
donning mountain and desert views, there are more than enough to
satisfy golfers of all skill levels.
The desert continues to astound visitors with its spectacular setting,
near-perfect climate and extraordinary golf. Its proximity to Los Angeles,
Orange County and San Diego make it a drivable destination in a few
hours time. Some of the resorts even offer stay-and-play packages,
including JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa, which hosts the
Palm and Valley courses; Westin Mission Hills Resort & Spa, a Gary
Player and Pete Dye course, and the Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa,
which boasts 27 holes. Hyatt and Esmeralda hotel guests can play the
Players and the Celebrity courses at the Indian Wells Resort. La Quinta
Resort & Club guests play either the Mountain or Dunes courses.
Some of the courses not to miss on your visit open to public play are
Desert Willow in Palm Desert, with its two testing layouts, the Firecliff
and the Mountain. Palm Springs has three public venues that offer
outstanding golf with mountain views: Indian Canyons Resort allows
you to play both the North and South courses, Cimarron Golf Resort
boasts a Long and a Short course, and Escena Golf Club has a Jack
Nicklaus design with some of the best mountain views in the valley. Just
off Interstate10 in Palm Desert is the Classic Club, a desert gem that was
the home course to the Bob Hope Classic for three years.
Travel further east to La Quinta and the courses of PGA WEST wait
with classic designs by the likes of Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold
Palmer, Tom Weiskopf and Greg Norman.
Before or after golf, there is plenty to do, both in the sunshine and after
dark. Some of the top entertainers come to town during the winter season
and the shopping is second to none. It’s a world-class golf destination,
just over the hills.

The PGA
is Coming to Town
Two local golf tournaments draw the
best to Southern California.

T
he PGA Tour kicks off in January
with two of its most popular
stops: The Humana Challenge
played in Coachella Valley and The
Farmers Insurance Open played in San
Diego at the fabled Torrey Pines North and
South Courses. With a promise of good
weather and an exciting field of pros, both
events draw large crowds.
Scheduled for Jan. 17 to 20, this year’s
Humana Challenge (humanachallenge.com)
marks 53 years of this desert tournament,
formerly called the “Bob Hope Classic.”
Several changes were made to the
tournament format by the new Humana
group, and all were well received by the
playing pros. The biggest change was going
from a five-day format to a four-day, and
having the pros play with only one amateur
partner instead of four.
The tournament has a long and rich
history, starting in 1960 as the Palm Springs
Golf Classic, marking the first of five wins
Arnold Palmer claimed at the meet. After
the tournament name changed to the “Bob
Hope Desert Classic,” several San Diego
professionals were victors: Billy Casper in
1965, Phil Mickelson in 2002 and 2004,
Charlie Hoffman in 2007 and Pat Perez in
2009.
The week is all about good golf, good
fun and raising a lot of funds for local
charities. Desert Classic Charities, the
local non-profit entity representing 40
Coachella Valley charities, received more
than $2.1 million in donations last year.

This year’s event will be played over three
of the desert’s most challenging venues: the
Palmer Private, the Nicklaus Private and
the La Quinta Country Club.
The biggest buzz at last year’s tournament
was the participation of former President
Bill Clinton. The week began with the
Clinton
Foundation’s
Health
Matters
Conference, which attracted some of the
nation’s top health and fitness experts,
drawing in some of the best crowds in
years. This year proves to be equally
exciting, with Phil Mickelson beginning
his PGA Tour season at this the Humana
Challenge.
Every year, the Century Club of San
Diego brings the Farmers Insurance Open
(farmersinsuranceopen.com) to town. Set
for the early-in-the-year dates of Jan. 24
to 27, the PGA pros are eager to test their
skills—and this tournament always makes
for an exciting finish. Last year’s winner,
Brandt Snedeker, won in a play-off with
Kyle Stanley.
The tournament, as always, is played over
the North and South Courses of Torrey
Pines in La Jolla. Fans back East and in
the Midwest love catching the event on
television, because of the storybook course,
hang-gliding and views of the ocean not
seen at other events. And locals can take it
in—in person.
The Golf Channel is scheduled to cover all
four days of the tournament. Local favorite
Phil Mickelson is scheduled to play along
with several other familiar names. Since
1968, the Century Club and its affiliated
corporate title sponsors have combined to
generate more than $22 million to nearly
200 local charities.
Get out and be a spectator at these two
classic events, or at least settle yourself in
front of your television to watch some great
golf and see some celebrities having great
fun. Who knows? You may even pick up a
few tips for your own game.

The Evolution
of Beauty
Advancements in cosmetic procedures have us pondering
the age-old question: What is beautiful?
By Whitney Butler | All photos used with permission
T
he ancient Egyptians were obsessed
with beauty and cleanliness—not
just in this life, but also in the
next. They believed that cosmetics had
healing, if not magical, powers. Clay and
kohl were applied to the face in a uniquely
ornamental way, and often left in tombs as
burial offerings to the deceased. Today’s woman doesn’t have time to worry
about incense, Henna tattoos or assuring
these things make it into her afterlife.
Modernity has helped define beauty by
manufacturing youth through a series of
products and procedures that are both
changing faces and the way people feel
about their appearance from the outside in. At some point, every woman becomes
aware of her appearance and the gift of her
temporal youth. She will learn to wear an
underwire bra, put on makeup and judge

her reflection with criticism: learned rituals
that play part in the cerebral experience and
social development of the feminine in our
modern time. Thick lines of kohl painted
across the eyes may not be ritual today,
but whether Egyptians began a popular
beauty obsession or not, even Cleopatra
herself would be amazed at the procedures
performed by the medical professionals
injecting, sculpting, lasering, sucking and
synching beauty on women—and men—
one procedure at a time.
The hallmark of past beauty trends can
be seen throughout distinct decades of
profound transformation that have shaped
women’s bodies, fashion, faces and parts
that are left unseen. And thanks to iconic
celebrities and pop-culture saturation, the
quest for beauty marches on, with beauty
demigods Kim Kardashian, Blake Lively,
Kate Beckinsale and CoverGirl princess
Taylor Swift singing the war cry. From the
Lesley “Twiggy” Lawson waif craze of the
1960s to current trends in uber-white dental
veneers, the evidence of beauty evolution is
apparent. But what is beauty—and where
do cosmetic procedures fit in?
“The decision to consider cosmetic
enhancements is a very personal one,” said
Dr. Amir M. Karam of Carmel Valley
Facial Plastic Surgery. “If there is a feature
or aging-related change that troubles you, it
may begin to impact your self-image, selfconfidence and actually cause problems in
your life.”
And unlike previous generations, we have
access to procedures that can actually turn
back the clock. If Cleopatra wasn’t dead
already, she would have died to try some of
these procedures.
January 2013
“We live in exciting times for facial
improvements and rejuvenation,” Karam
said. “It is now possible to change features
that bother you…even better, it is now
possible to have procedures that prevent
your face from aging.”
Though alternatives to invasive beauty
enhancements are increasing, recent
statistics reported by the American Society
of Plastic Surgery reveal no slowing of
invasive cosmetic procedures. Breast
augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty, eye
lifts and facelifts are still among the most
common plastic surgeries on the menu.
While choice has always been an
advantage, it can be confusing when
it comes to beauty. Are my breasts big
enough? Should my inner thighs touch? Is
my smile perfect? These are questions that,
when left to society, reveal brutal scrutiny.
Who decides what’s beautiful?
Doctors throughout San Diego have
provided amazing results for patients who
are ready to take control of their beauty
with innovative procedures and products to
assist in answering these complex questions.
But even doctors caution the physical
perception of beauty as self-improvement.
“Looking wonderful is a great thing, feeling
wonderful is everything,” said Dr. Stuart
Kincaid, a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Today’s advanced procedures are not as
crude as they may seem juxtaposed against
ancient practices. Many mimic customary
beauty rituals that have been practiced
for centuries. Microdermabrasion, or
chemically peeled skin, is non-invasive and
promotes a youthful glow.
But cosmetic dentistry is an altogether
new kind of beauty. A beautiful straight
smile is quickly becoming the mark of good
health, beauty and status. Injectables of
several varieties are now available during
a lunch break, with new creams and elixirs
available to complement and deliver an
endless fountain of youth. And beauty
trends have created specialized beauty
practitioners such wax estheticians, who
establish a new frontier of beauty on our
most private parts. Even LASIK surgery,
a procedure performed on the cornea to
correct astigmatism, has become a place of
pilgrimage for those seeking near-perfect
vision and an unencumbered appearance.
“LASIK makes an enormous difference
in the lives my patients,” said Dr. Manoj
Motwani of the Motwani LASIK Institute.
“By enhancing their sight, work and lifestyle,
LASIK eye surgery gives patients a sense
of freedom and liberation they didn’t have
before the procedure. Besides making them
look better, they feel better too.” Beauty will undoubtedly change as
perceptions in culture shift from one
generation
to
the
next.
Today,
the
emphasis on beauty is clearly influenced
by the advancements of medicine and our
tendency to hyper-accentuate imperfections
in the media. While self-improvement
remains an introspective journey, cosmetics
and beauty enhancements strive to improve
the lives of patients from the outside in.
Though questions of beauty still exist, it is
important to remember that it’s not all there
is in life. The pharaohs and queens of old
inevitably met their mortality. With gold,
jade and rubies adorning their tombs, they
could only hope that the beauty they lived
in this life would follow them to the next.

O
ur face is our most important
physical feature. It is, by
far, the part of the body
that people look at the most. It defines
our appearance, image, and the first
impression we make on others.
The influence that our face plays on
our self-confidence and attitude cannot
be overstated. Looking our best feels
good!
When
something
feels
“off,”
whether from genetics, age, accident, or a
previous cosmetic procedure, we become
preoccupied and self-conscious because of
it. Even if others do not notice it, we do,
and this awareness has a deep impact on
our lives.
Tired of living with a feature on your face
that makes you unhappy? You don’t have

to! You can change the shape of your nose,
lips or eyes, or turn back the clock to return
to your youthful appearance. In fact, these
days you can opt for a range of procedures
that can prevent your face from aging!
San Diego’s Dr. Karam is a unique
cosmetic surgeon. Instead of focusing
on one type of surgery or procedure, he
focuses on one part of the body: the face.
Dr. Karam offers an array of surgical and
non-surgical procedures, all designed to
help men and women find confidence and
happiness in their appearance.
“The number one reason that people
come to Carmel Valley Facial Plastic
Surgery in San Diego is for the natural
looking results,” says Dr. Karam. “If a
procedure is done well, from a minor one
BEFORE

like a Botox injection, all the way to a nose
job or a facelift, no one will be able to tell
that you’ve had something done. People
will ask you if you’ve done something with
your hair, or if you had a good night’s sleep.
They will know that you look better, but
won’t know exactly why. This is the sign of
a successful cosmetic surgery. It’s also why
our patients are so happy, and why so many
of our new patients come to us through
referrals.”
With so many cosmetic procedures available
today, Dr. Karam believes that his patients
should understand their choices before
deciding on a procedure. To help educate
everyone with an interest in cosmetic
procedures, Dr. Karam has written many
books and papers about facial rejuvenation,
including his newly completed book that
will be released in the spring -- Refreshed: 50
Secrets to a Naturally Younger Looking Face.
Dr. Karam says, “When it comes to
procedures for aging, the new trend in
cosmetic surgery is procedures that prevent
aging. “If you begin earlier – before others
even notice that you are aging, the results
can be spectacular. Instead of correcting
signs of aging, you can prevent aging to the
point where others believe that your face
never changes!”
Dr. Karam enjoys helping others find
confidence in their appearance, whether
it’s through rhinoplasty (a nose job), a
minor procedure like Botox, or cutting edge
procedures that most people have never
heard of, such as a facial fat transfer.
“When a procedure takes self-consciousness
away, the results are amazing! I have seen
people walk out of my office – even after
a minor “lunch-time” procedure – with
a completely different attitude. Cosmetic
procedures can have profound positive
effects on our social, professional and
personal relationships, even our own
personal happiness,” he added.
“The best part about cosmetic surgery
is that there’s no hurry. Do your research,
understand the different procedures and
find the right doctor. Make sure it feels right
before moving ahead,” says Dr. Karam. Questions for Dr. Karam? Visit his website

reating thousands of patients by
helping them regain their vision
through LASIK vision correction,
Dr. Manoj Motwani, has been performing
laser vision correction in San Diego since 1999.
Building one of the best known laser eye surgery
practices over the last 14 years, the doctor’s
professional reviews are outstanding and a large
percentage of his practice, according to Dr.
Motwani revolve around referrals. ‘Referrals
have proven to be our best source simply
because people who are looking for something
as important as having their eyes corrected
ask friends and family where they had the best
experience’, he says. Dr. Motwani understands
the anxiety and fear associated with LASIK
surgery. ‘After all’, he says, ‘it’s their eyes, and
they need to have a lot of trust and confidence
in the surgeon who is performing the procedure
and the laser.’
‘As a surgeon’, he says, ‘you’re always on the
lookout for what’s best for your patients and
your practice. However, with all the gimmicks
and competing claims out there, it can be hard
to get to the truth.’
Dr. Motwani’s center is in UTC-La Jolla, and
visitors remark not only on the warmth and
beauty of the office, but also on the friendliness
of the staff. “I feel strongly that a patient should
not only be treated with warmth and care, but
should also have the opportunity to learn
as much as they want about this procedure.
My center is an expression of my personal
philosophy.”
Having used many of the lasers and
refractive equipment in the United
States over the past decade and a half,
Dr. Motwani has chosen everything he
uses carefully. One of the lasers at his
center is the Alcon Wavelight Allegretto
Wave Eye-Q 400 system, which is widely
considered to be one the best available.
“The Allegretto is one of the fastest and
most accurate lasers we have in the world,
and it really makes the procedure easier
for the patient and the surgeon” says Dr.
Motwani. “What I do is select procedures
for each patient myself, based on what I
believe they need, and what will work best
for them. I see myself not only as a healer
and an educator, but as someone who
has the opportunity to make each of my
patient’s lives better and richer by giving
them great vision and the ability to see
better than they ever have before.”
His center usually advises patients to
come in for a complimentary consult, and
even patients who have been told they were
not candidates before often can be treated
now. “There is a lot of misinformation out
there about LASIK, and I feel my job is to
cut through the confusion and help people
to understand what’s possible for them.
Hyperopia, Astigmatism, Myopia, and
even the need for reading glasses can be
helped, and with the new devices we have
it’s often easier than ever for the patient.”
Dr. Motwani also recognizes the need
for affordability in these Great Recession
times. “I’m not the least expensive, but I
make sure I’m not the most expensive. I
want everyone to be able to afford the
wonderful gift of vision” he says, and his
center offers interest free financing to go
along with complementary consults.

just because the journey is long, doesn’t

Aspen
Aspen Mountain’s famous black-diamond
terrain has kept the city on the map since
1947. The mountain features 64 miles
of trails and eight lifts—and there are no
bunny slopes here. Guests of The Little Nell
(thelittlenell.com)—Aspen’s only five-star,
five-diamond hotel—enjoy coveted ski in/
ski out privileges to this historic mountain.
“When San Diego travelers are looking
for luxury services and unparalleled access
to America’s most famous mountain town,
The Little Nell is the perfect getaway,” said
John Speers, the hotel’s managing director.
“Our cosmopolitan-yet-intimate ambience
makes for a fantastic vacation in Aspen.”
It’s the service that makes The Little Nell
legendary. From babysitting and carwash
services to helicopter skiing and in-room
massages, there is no shortage of amenities.
Even your pet can enjoy the lap of luxury,
from gourmet biscuits to dog walking and
grooming—and a Puppy Jet Lag Kit, if
necessary. The legendary hotel offers a
Ski Concierge team that handles slopeside services, from equipment waxing to
boot warming, as well as inter-mountain
ski transfer to Buttermilk, Highlands and
Snowmass.
Perhaps the only thing that tops a day
on the slopes is the après-ski. The hotel’s
famed Montagna restaurant just underwent
a remodel, re-emerging as Element 47.
Guests can choose from a menu separated
into four distinct “elements”: garden, sea,
sky (poultry) and field (beef and game). Each
quadrant includes appetizers, sharable items
and entrees. Colorado agriculture is the
focal point of Chef Robert McCormick’s
menu, which draws from local produce and
livestock, as well as sustainable seafood from
both coasts.
Lake Tahoe
From families to world champions, Lake
Tahoe offers something for everyone. Seven
resorts surround North America’s second
largest alpine lake, allowing you to weave
through trees, hit the terrain parks or fly
down challenging steeps.
The discriminating will want to stay at The

With a mile of vertical rise, summit
glaciers and more than 200 trails, Whistler
and Blackcomb offers thousands of acres to
explore. Both mountains get plastered with
more than 400 inches of snow each year,

novice alike. The two Canadian mountain
peaks are connected by a smooth 11-minute
ride on the PEAK 2 PEAK, the world’s
highest and longest gondola. With so many
options, the hardest part is deciding where
to go first.
