About Us
The Clay Shed stocks over 50 clay bodies and an extensive
range of glazes, colours, tools, brushes, refractory materials
and studio equipment.
Cameron Hess and Tania Matheson have been owner/
operators of the Clay Shed since 2009.
Cameron is a second generation potter with over 20 years
experience, acquiring skills and knowledge during his early
years as a production potter at Yarra Glen Pottery in
Brisbane, and later across many parts of Queensland,
including Byfield and Montville, and Northern New South
Wales.
Tania is involved in many of the operational aspects of The Clay Shed and enjoys
dabbling in clay play in her spare time.
Everything for the beginner through to the experienced potter.
The Clay Shed offers it all!

Note: It may be necessary, under some conditions, to add from

needed.
The clear glaze used should mature at the glaze firing temperature and be compatible with the base glaze.

SOME NOTES REGARDING THE SHELF LIFE
OF CESCO UNDERGLAZES
Cesco underglaze colours contain a binder system to allow easy
application. The binder will deteriorate with time. The shelf life
is affected by a number of factors but would normally be expected to be greater than two (2) years. Unfortunately once the
binder has deteriorated, it is not possible to safely restore its
properties.
CODE
(Colours marked * can burn out at stoneware temperatures)
 May be fired on greenware or bisque either under or over
glaze
See the full colour chart at
RECOMMENDED TECHNIQUES
www.clayshed.com.au
DECORATING
1. Apply the underglaze by brushing the dry clay ware with 1 to 3
coats.
2. Bisque fire.
3. Apply suitable clear glaze (brushing, dipping, spraying).
4. Glaze fire.
Note: If the undercoat is too thick, “crawling” may occur. No. 12
Ebony Black and No. 19 Royal Blue give best results when applied
thinly. Alternatively, underglazes may be applied to bisqueware,
but it is then preferable to use a brush-on clear glaze.
We recommend the following to ensure the maximum usable life
of Cesco underglazes:
 Always keep the container lid firmly screwed on.
 Stir underglazes only with a clean dry blade before use.
 If some underglaze is decanted into a working container, do
not return any excess to the original particularly if water has
been used.
 Purchase quantities of underglaze relevant to your usage rate.

LUSTRES
for application to glass and glazed ceramic
For best results the lustre should be applied evenly to clean glazed surfaces with a flat camel hair or sable brush. A
much thinner application should be used if firing on glass. Too heavy a coat will blister or flake. Uneven coats may
cause variations. Thin, even applications of lustres are a must. If a deeper colour is desired, then reapply the material being used and refire. Never pat a spot, but go over the entire area and refire. Lustres can be applied over one
another as long as you fire in between.
Work in a dust and draft free area. Dust and moisture are the two most detrimental elements in working with lustres. Clean the surface of the glaze with a cleaner to remove any dust, finger-paints, or grease-like coatings sometimes found on the ware after glaze firing.
Lustres vary in viscosity and workability. Those that appear thick and tacky can be conditioned by adding a few
drops of Lustre Thinner. Lustres may be also thinned further and applied by spraying.

Patch A Tatch (118ml (4oz)) $8.95
APTII Ceramic Enhancer (59ml (2oz))
$20.10
Quality ceramic cement to attach or repair greenware or
bisque. Apply and refire to ensure pieces are attached to
one another.
1. Gently scratch crisscross lines on areas to be joined.
2. Using a soft brush, moisten scored areas or broken
edges with water. Use the same brush to apply a
good coat of Patch-A-Tatch to these areas.
3. Quickly attach or fit the pieces together and hold
securely for a few seconds.
4. Brush a little Patch-ATatch over the joint and,
when set and thoroughly
dry, scrape, sand, sponge
or otherwise finish, and
the piece is ready for
decorating and firing.
5. Clean up with water.
APT II Ceramic Enhancer is an acrylic emulsion
additive that is food safe and non-toxic. It
cleans up with water and has an indefinite
shelf life. APT-II Ceramic Enhancer will thicken
all brands of slip and clay bodies, which
enables attaching, mending and creating
surface decorations on greenware, bisque or
finished glazed pieces.
APTII Porcelain and Stoneware Enhancer
(59ml (2oz))
$23.10
Mends and attaches bisque, glazed &
greenware pieces. Provides smoother

The Three Cone System
While a single cone may be used on a shelf to “witness” the firing, it is recommended to use three different cones.
The group consists of a Firing Cone - the desired cone for the ware being produced; the Guide Cone - one cone number cooler; and the Guard Cone - one cone
number hotter than the Firing Cone.
These cones need to be set deep in the kiln, yet should be visible through the
bung hole.
When the Guide Cone
starts to bend, the ware is
approaching maturity.
The bending of the Firing
Cone indicates that the
firing is at its correct stage.
If the Guard Cone has bent,
the firing has passed its
best
time-temperature
window.
