For best results the lustre should be applied to very clean surface (wipe over with a cloth dipped in methylated spirits) and brush in even strokes. If the lustre is applied too heavily it may blister or flake. If application is too light the lustre may burn away. If your lustre is thick and tacky, thin by adding a few drops of thinners and remember to wash your brush out in the thinners also. Keep your brush for use with lustres only. The firing of lustres should be well ventilated (I find the spider and insect population decreases dramatically after a lustre firing of my kiln!) Please allow sufficient time for the ordering of these lustres as I only keep a small amount of gold, platinum and mother of pearl in stock. It is advisable to keep your lustres and thinners in the fridge to avoid evaporation and theft! They are fully intermixable and can produce a variety of rainbow colours Potters Needs for all clay, materials, workshops, gallery, kiln repair and sound technical advice. (We can also calibrate and repair your dead pyros) Wheels and Kilns We are often asked “do we stock second hand wheels and kilns?” We are happy to put you in touch with anyone we know who might be selling, but we don’t have the room to hold second hand stock. We ARE distributors for Woodrow kilns and Venco wheels so call us for a price on new ones. A good way to source a second hand wheel or kiln is to look in the trading post or on E-Bay. Good questions to ask is: “What type of firings has the kiln done?” ie: china dolls/porcelain you know it will reach 1300c. “Is the kiln a brand name or homemade?” “What is the condition inside?” “Is the insulation in good condition?” “Is it 3 phase, single or two phase (if electric)” “Can I test fire it first?” “Do I have the necessary power to fire it in my studio?” When purchasing a second hand wheel check to see the motor runs and there are no vibrations in the wheel head. Preferably try it out first! For wheels that don’t run, the motor may need to be replaced or rewound. This cost is approximately $ 450.00 For any queries you’re welcome to email Ian photos of the kiln you’re thinking of purchasing. This way you won’t be buying a lemon! info@pottersneeds.com.au Potters Needs for all clay, materials, workshops, gallery, kiln repair and sound technical advice.
