Barbara Jean Hillhouse Barbara Jean Wilson (Hillhouse) was the first Rodeo Queen for Los Alamos County in 1955. Competition to earn this title started one summer evening in June of ‘55, and pitted nine girls against each other for riding ability. Ultimately, two girls were selected - Wilson, and one of her good friends Polly Richardson. The decision was made that whoever sold the most tickets to the rodeo would become the Rodeo Queen. Polly’s parents sold tickets on her behalf in the LANL Tech Areas, and Barbara Jean’s parents sold tickets from their business, The Pastry Shop, which was located in the Community Center. Competition was nip and tuck, but Wilson won.. Wilson received her crown during the rodeo, where she also showed her horse, a Palomino Arabian named Tony. Tony performed the cake walk, in-place trot, and the bow. New Mexico Governor Dempsey performed the crowning, which required Barbara Jean to bend down at the waist, since she was a tall 6’1”, and the Governor was barely 5’ tall. That fall, Barbara Jean represented Los Alamos County at the State Fair. Barbara Jean remembers how it poured rain during the riding competition and one of the interviews held in the arena. Los Alamos County Rodeo Sweetheart Janey Michel is proud to be the 2015 Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo Sweetheart. She is a third generation Los Alamos County resident and the proud daughter of Kellie and James Michel. Janey got started at a young age with horses and rodeos with her palomino horse Cody. She enjoys running barrels and doing pole bending in the rodeo community. Rodeo Queen’s Court runs in the family, as her sister and aunt have also been past rodeo royalty. Janey attends Aspen Elementary school in Los Alamos, where she will be entering the 6th grade this fall. In Janey’s spare time, when she isn’t working with horses, she also enjoys playing softball, camping, and spending time with her family and friends. She would like to invite everyone to come out to the Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo this year, and she looks forward to seeing you there! Most of the vendors are full-time artists making a living from their art. About two-thirds of this year’s group were here last year and look forward to returning. When asked what they like about our fair, many will comment on how our fair still has a friendly community atmosphere like arts and crafts fairs of yore. After the Rodeo Parade passes by in the late morning the spectators head back into the park, so it’s a great social event as well. The 39th Annual Summer Arts & Crafts Fair runs from 9am until 4pm on the lawn behind Fuller Lodge. The Art Center booth in the center of the lawn will offer ice water along with seating for tired shoppers and people watchers. Many favorite artists are returning for the Summer Arts & Crafts Fair as well as a great number of artists new to Los Alamos. For indoor/outdoor look at Dave Merriman’s statement size sonorous wind chimes or Pea Garvanian’s exotic solar lights in her “Leftovers” collection. For the younger ones there are sock monkeys (Sandra Frentzel’s Cotton Alley Crafts) and beaded animals (Jaqueline Lopez). Of course you can find the most beautiful handmade jewelry, from silver or gold with precious stones to intricately beaded works to pieces including living air plants (Gasinee Pitakkan’s Sathi Designs). This year there will be 100 different artists sharing their unique hand crafted work at the Summer Arts and Crafts Fair. Let’s show them that Los Alamos loves the arts!
