It Just Takes One BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA ANNUAL REPORT 2006-2007 One Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania Annual Report 2006-2007 It Just Takes 1 D o you believe that the world has become a complicated place and that a simpler time has passed us by? Maybe it has for some, but the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania is full of hope and opportunity for over a thousand children in our community. It is a place where children can play, have fun, explore their own interests and learn about themselves and the larger world they live in. Our safe, positive environment also provides kids with the opportunity to define, clarify and develop their values; to establish a sense of what is important and what is right and wrong. Even more importantly, young people need someone to be there to help make a difference in their lives; to instill hope and opportunity into their view of the world. Staff at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania makes a positive difference every day. We hold our youth to high expectations. The commitment and availability of caring adults lay the foundation for relationships built on mutual respect and trust. These positive relationships give youth the confidence to look up to staff and even pattern their lives after them. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania utilizes a time-tested Youth Development Strategy that promotes and enhances the development of boys and girls by instilling: • a sense of competence, the feeling there is something they can do well, • a sense of usefulness, the opportunity to do something of value for others, • a sense of belonging in a setting where youth know they fit in and are accepted and • a sense of power and influence by giving them a chance to be heard and to make decisions. Besides your parents, who made a difference for you in your childhood? Was it a favorite teacher? A coach? A neighbor? Or someone else who guided you and taught you about life? You can be the one to make a difference in the life of a child by providing him or her with a safe, secure and stimulating environment through our Boys & Girls Clubs. We need the financial support of caring people like you to help us reach the children who need us most. Your investment gives the Boys & Girls Clubs the chance to develop a generation of Americans who are productive and caring citizens. They will become our community, national and world leaders, exhibiting strong character and integrity to build a better life for themselves, better communities for their fellow citizens and a stronger America. A myriad of kids depends on our Boys & Girls Clubs. We must continue to reach out to additional children to offer programs that provide a future for ALL kids. Your financial investment is essential to ensure that our Club continues to offer programs and activities for young people throughout our community. It just takes one person to make a lasting difference in the life of a child. Are you the one? It just takes one person to make a lasting difference in the life of a child. Will you be that one? Dear Club Supporters: It just takes one person to make a lasting difference in the life of a child. This is quite a statement – but one we know to be true. Over and over, throughout the year, we see many examples of how one person can have an enormous impact on the life of a child. This year’s Annual Report is filled with examples of how individuals came forward and generously donated the financial resources we need to run our life changing programs. In 1899, the Reverend Dr. Rogers Israel, rector of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, started a youth group for boys named the Boys’ Industrial Association. This fledgling organization joined a growing national federation of youth organizations in 1906 which later went on to become the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dear Friends of the Club: Thank you for another successful year. Your support enables the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania to continue to be the “Positive Place for Kids”! The financial resources the Club receives continue to be employed in providing for our mission – Youth Development. Serving, educating and improving the lives of children in our community is truly our only passion. The past year was marked by the continued success of our annual campaign, “It Just Takes America. From its inception, the organization was non-sectarian and inter-racial in membership and administration. Our Club has been in continuous operation, serving the youth of this community for 108 years. Conservatively it has been estimated that over 80,000 children have been members during this period of time. This grand history of service and achievement was made possible through the vision of one dedicated and caring individual with a dream. The Boys & Girls Clubs welcome ALL young people who want to be part of something special. Membership is open to everyone, ages 6 through 18. There are no income guidelines or special requirements. The Boys & Girls Clubs build character through everyday leadership and guidance in behavior and attitude. Young people of all nationalities and races come together in wholesome recreation and companionship. The hallmark of the Boys & Girls Clubs is that we offer each and every child who comes through our doors a warm, safe haven; life enhancing programs; a relationship with caring, trained adults; and a sense of hope for a future of bright possibilities. We provide our members with a supervised and nurturing environment in which to learn and grow into productive citizens of our community. Every day, children come through our doors and receive something of great value. Whether it is homework assistance, a hot meal or participating in one of our social, educational, athletic or recreational programs, they leave the building having been enriched for that day. Their lives are changed forever because you reached out to help. One person can truly make a difference. Your continued support makes a real difference in the lives of over 1,000 children in our community. Children are our greatest hope for tomorrow; we thank you for giving them a bright future. It takes just one person to make a lasting difference in the life of a child. Are you the one? Mary Ann Dziak Executive Director One”, 7th Annual Golf Tournament at Glen Oak Country Club, and 14th Annual Champion of Youth Reception at Glenmaura National Country Club honoring the following champions: Messrs. Henry Belin, IV, Jerry Klein, John M. Hennemuth and John P. Mesko. Financial support from friends of the Club both public and private is our lifeblood. Your on-going financial support provides the programming to make a difference in the life of a child. Programs that are offered in a safe, positive environment that aide in instilling a sense of confidence, usefulness, belonging and general empowerment that a child needs to define, clarify, and develop values and become a productive and responsible citizen. On behalf of our organization, I want to express my gratitude to the City of Scranton, Lackawanna County, Prudential Foundation, TJX Foundation, Tomorrow Leaders Today/Scranton Area Foundation, Keystone Sanitary Landfill, M&T Bank, PNC Bank, LR Costanzo Construction, Diamond Auto Glass, Gertrude Hawk Chocolates, Kost Tire & Auto Service, Patsel’s Restaurant, A. Rifkin Co. and the many other companies and individuals for providing the funding necessary to support our children. Thank you for your support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Your support matters and so do the kids. Yours truly, David P. Rudis, CPA, CVA, CFP® Board President 2 Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania Annual Report 2006-2007 Jeremiah Milbank Society 3 M r. Jeremiah Milbank gave of himself generously to Boys & Girls Clubs of America and others. His extraordinary lifelong concern for youth and those less fortunate has changed the lives of millions and is the inspiration for The Jeremiah Milbank Society. The Jeremiah Milbank Society is designed to engage leading donors by strengthening their understanding and support of the Boys & Girls Clubs, and by recognizing their deep commitment to the children of their community. For a donor to be admitted into The Jeremiah Milbank Society, an individual must have made an annual unrestricted donation of $10,000 or more to a local Boys & Girls Clubs through the ONE Campaign. Club Names First Jeremiah Milbank Society Members T he Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania are proud to announce its first two Jeremiah Milbank Society members. Eugene Donahue was our first Jeremiah Milbank Society member. He states, “The community has been good to me, and I think it’s only right to give back.” Gene sees a different world today then that of years ago. He sees a greater need for services for the children in our communities. He references that in many cases, with two parents working, the Club is there to give youth the opportunities for training, homework help and more. Gene states, “The ONE Campaign is long overdue. It is the type of campaign that should have been started years ago.” Gene has been a Board Member of the Club for eighteen years. He is the founder and past owner of PDQ Print Center in Scranton. He is currently retired and spends his winters in Florida golfing. Ken Levine, owner and President of Diamond Glass Companies, was the second to come forward as a Jeremiah Milbank Society member. Ken states, “I see a great need in our community for the services provided by the Club. I also see need for local businesses and individuals to give unrestricted donations to the Club.” Ken has been on the Board of Directors of the Club for two years now. He was approached by his good friend, Joe Migliorino. Joe told Ken of all the good work the Club does in both Lackawanna and Luzerne counties. Ken was very interested in being a part of what the Club does. A long time donor of the organization, Ken joined the Board of Directors without hesitation. Ken agrees with Gene, “The ONE Campaign is long overdue. Non-profit organizations need to be financially independent and campaigns such as this are a way to achieve that goal.” Recognized as One of the Fifty Founding Clubs in the Country T he Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania have recently received an honor from Boys & Girls Clubs of America. To commemorate the Centennial of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania was recognized as one of the fifty founding Boys & Girls Clubs in the country. Founded in 1899, joined the movement in 1906, chartered in 1916 and incorporated in 1927, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania have been in the forefront of youth development activities, working with young people from a variety of economic, social and family circumstances. The primary mission of the Club is to “inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.” “We are thrilled to receive this recognition,” stated Joe Migliorino, Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Vice President. “We are officially a part of Boys & Girls Clubs history.” David Ross, Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Northeast Regional Service Director, came to the Club’s Central City Unit in September of 2006 to make the presentation.
