The 9th China Hotel Investment Conference (CHIC2013) organized by HVS lived up to its reputation once again as The Most Influential Hotel Investment
Conference in China. The three-day event saw a record turnout of 820 leaders of hotel and tourism industry from over 20 countries. The conference centre
of the Grand Hyatt Shanghai was brimming with delegates networking, sharing ideas with one another and boosting multilateral coorperation.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Themed “Vision and Strategy for Success in a Changing World”, the 9th China Hotel Investment Conference (CHIC) organised by HVS Global Hospitality
Services recorded a turnout of over 820 delegates and high-profile speakers.
The event which took place from 17 to 19 April 2013 at the Grand Hyatt Shanghai brought together leaders of the hotel and tourism industry from over 20
countries. Some of the distinguished speakers include Dai Bin – President, China Tourism Academy; Mark
Hoplamazian – President & Chief Executive Officer, Hyatt Hotels Corporation; Abid Butt – Chief Executive
Officer, Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts; Michael Glennie – President and Chief Operating Officer,

Robin Bew, Chief Economist & Editorial Director
of the Economist Intelligence Unit, delivered his
insights on China’s growing influence on the global
economy and an update on the global economic
situation and how China could weigh in on
opportunities in new frontiers.
The regional and global CEOs took the stage, led by David Ling, Chairman of HVS China and Southeast
Asia, to share their views on some of the expansion strategies international hotel companies can
undertake and how they could differentiate their
products.
Stephen Rushmore Jr., President and Chief Executive Officer of HVS Global Hospitality Services, delivered
an address on the global hotel market trends and predictions for 2017. He shared his views on some
of the hospitality trends and values in the global and Asian markets and noted that there is room for
growth in the mid-scale sector, as the luxury sector begins to become oversaturated. In large economies
such as China and India, there remains enormous opportunity in the mid-scale segment.
For all to understand most updated China Tourism Policy, Mr Liu Xiao Jun, director of policies and
regulation department from China National Tourism Administration delivered his further understanding
of government policy movements versus marketing practices.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The plenary session “New Sources of Capital and Partnerships in Domestic and International Markets”
received large turnout as the high-profile speakers shared their insights and first-hand experiences in
obtaining financing for hospitality projects. The plenary speakers included David Blumenfeld – Senior
Partner, Paul Hastings; Gaurav Bhushan – Chief Development & Investment Officer, Accor Asia Pacific;
Jim Abrahamson – Chief Executive Officer, InterState Hotels & Resorts; and Jill Hellman – Managing
Director, Thayer Lodging Group – China.
During the event, to appraisal and recognise outstanding individuals and companies that contribute
to the industry, China Hotel Investment Conference (CHIC) Organising Committee and Advisory
Boardtogether with senior industry executives across the region were involved in the nomination and
selection process to come out 6 different awards. With over 30 years contribution to the hospitality
industry, Mr Yang Weimin, CEO of Shanghai Jin Jiang International Hotels (Group) won the Lifetime
Achievement Award; Mr Wu Hai, CEO of Orange Hotel, who created the first concept of “Design Hotel” in China won the China Hotelier of the Year Award;
Mr Mark Hoplamazian, President & Chief Executive Officer who leading the Hyatt Hotels Corporation was the winner of International Hotelier of the Year; For
China Hospitality Excellence Award,it is no doubt belongs to Greenland International Hotels Group, which has over 60 hotels in operation or under construction
in China and overseas, with total assets size of 20 billion RMB, becoming one of the largest hotel owner and operator company in China; The International
Hospitality Award went to IHG who marks 30 years of doing business in China and has more than 180 opened hotels and 170 hotels in the pipeline across more
than 100 cities today, making it the largest International hotel operator in the country with the longest history in the market and a deep understanding of
Chinese consumers. Last but not least, Sheraton Huzhou Hot Spring Resort which owning by Shanghai Feizhou Group and managed by Starwood Hotels and
Resorts with its amazing design got the prize for Hotel Development Excellence Award.
As the traditional and most popular activity for the three days conference, Shanghai Leading Real
Estate Project Showcase gave all delegates another fantastic experience. The 5 routes tour covered
most typical luxury and boutique hotels as well as famous service apartments. For instance, the new
Twelve at Hengshan by Starwood, Banyan Tree Shanghai on the bund, etc..This tour has not only
helped delegatesbuilt upa vividly concept for their future projects but also brought out the whole core
of having this conference –Be Seen. Be Connected. Be on a journey to learn, to grow and to success in
the future!
At the end, CHIC Organising Committee expressed its gratitude and appreciation to all partners,
