In order to receive this service on your TV, you must have a digital TV with an internal Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) tuner. Most (but not all) TV’s made after 2007 will include an internal QAM tuner, since the FCC mandated that all televisions support digital channels beginning in that year. “What the heck is a QAM tuner and how do I know if I have one?” A QAM tuner allows your TV to tune to the digital or HD cable channels that Time-Warner is sending out. Most, but not all, TVs that were made after 2007 have a QAM tuner built in. Most Samsung, Sony, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Vizio models have a built in QAM tuner. Brands like Westinghouse, Element, or other lower-end brands often do not have the QAM tuner. You can search online by make/model of your TV or reference your TV's owner’s manual for specific model information related to what type of tuner is present. An example of what the manual may say if the TV has a QAM tuner: • “Built-in digital tuner (ATSC/QAM)” • NOTE: An ATSC tuner alone will not work with QAM. It MUST say “QAM” or “Digital QAM Tuner” Additionally, if your TV remote has the (.) or (-) symbol button for easy tuning or is able to display channels with a (.) or (-) as in 74.1 or 74-2, your device likely has a QAM tuner. NOTE: This is general information regarding integrated QAM tuner enabled TVs. We advise that you always refer to the manufacturer’s website or examine the “technical specifications” section of the owner’s manual to determine information on the QAM tuner. “What if my digital TV doesn’t have a QAM tuner or I have an old analog TV?” Analog TVs will not work with the campus digital HD service and must be upgraded. If your digital TV does not have an internal QAM tuner, for best results, you should update your television. If you are unable to do that, submit a service ticket to the IT help desk at https://helpdesk.catawba.edu. Please specify in the ticket the make and model number of your TV, and approximate year of purchase, so that we can verify its QAM status. IT is working on acquiring some external QAM tuners to loan to students with digital TVs that do not include an internal QAM tuner. “I’ve heard I need to get a converter box from Time-Warner – is this true?” No. You do not need a separate converter box from Time Warner. A converter box from Time Warner will not work with our oncampus QAM network. Those converter boxes are strictly for residential Time Warner TV service. “How do I set up my TV to work with the College’s Time Warner Cable ClearQAM service? It is important to perform a channel scan on your TV to ensure you are viewing all the available channels. Exact details on how to auto program or auto tune digital TVs vary based on manufacturer and model. For best results, refer to the owner’s manual. What follows are general instructions that should work on most TVs. Note that TVs take between 20-45 minutes to complete this function. 1. Connect one end of the coaxial cable to the TV wall jack and the other end to the input connector on your TV. If your TV has more than one input connector, select the one which is typically labelled "CABLE IN", "CATV", "ANTENNA", or sometimes "RF IN" or “VHF IN” on your television. Do not connect to the “UHF IN” on your television. 2. Power the TV on. 3. Using the TV remote, select “Menu”, then “Set Up” 4. Select “Antenna”, then “Cable”. 5. Select “Auto Program/Auto Tune/Channel scan” then “OK” . Make sure you are running a DIGITAL CABLE scan, not an “air” or “antenna” scan. 6. The TV will automatically begin searching to identify all available channels. 7. After this auto search is complete, there should be 70+ channels available for viewing (see pages 1 and 2 for complete channel line-up). “What if I do the above steps and my TV still isn’t working?” 1. If you’ve verified that your TV is a digital TV with an internal QAM tuner, and it isn’t working after doing the above steps, then there may be an issue with either the coax cable connecting your TV to the wall jack or with the wall jack itself. Visit the IT help desk on the ground floor of Hoke to get a new coax cable and repeat the above steps. 2. If the TV still doesn’t work, submit a service ticket to the IT help desk at https://helpdesk.catawba.edu.
