INDIANA INDIANA UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY–PURDUE UNIVERSITY UNIVERSITY FORT FORT WAYNE WAYNE 1 2015 DEDICATION AWARD HONOREE DOROTHY KITTAKA Dorothy Kittaka exemplifies the image of a woman who has shown positive aspects in all areas of her life. Her lifelong dedication to community arts makes her a role model for women throughout northeast Indiana and across the world. Her storied journey began during one of the darkest times in American history. When she was just two years old, Kittaka and her family were among more than 120,000 other Japanese-Americans sent to American internment camps during the height of the Second World War. It was in a camp that Kittaka experienced her very first memory of music from a lone, soulful trumpet player. This moment of providence would stay with her all her life, compelling her to devote her life to music. Kittaka co-founded the Foundation for Art and Music in Education (FAME), a non-profit organization of art, music, dance, and drama educators that fosters and encourages an appreciation for the arts in education of elementary and middle school age children throughout northern Indiana. FAME has reached over 4,500,000 children with the arts in 28 years. Additionally, she co-founded the Cherry Blossom Festival in Fort Wayne and organized and served as the first state chair for Circle the State with Song, a statewide choral festival for K–8 students. Kittaka has sung in the Kennedy Center as a John F. Kennedy Teacher in the Arts Fellow and has sung operas with the IPFW Opera Workshop and as part of the chorus for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony, in addition to being a soprano soloist for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and a member of the Bach Collegium. She has been widely recognized for her accomplishments in education, music, and community stewardship. Kittaka was inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame in 1999, a finalist for the Indiana Teacher of the Year Award in 1997, and received the Indiana Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year Award from the Indiana Music Educators Association in 1991. She is a recipient of the Fulbright Memorial Teachers Fund Grant; Parents Magazine National As They Grow Award, presented by Hillary Clinton at a White House Luncheon; and featured in a book, TEACHERS, A Tribute to the Enlightened, Exceptional, the Extraordinary, 2001, which features 50 teachers across America and the Arts United Lifetime Achievement Award, among many other accolades. She currently serves as president of the Fort Wayne Sister Cities International Board of Directors. Kittaka’s contributions to the northeast Indiana community arts are nothing short of legendary. As a teacher, musician, and community activist, she has inspired countless girls (and boys) who have gone on to become teachers, musicians, and engaged citizens. Kittaka and her husband, the late Robert S. Kittaka. Ph.D., have three married sons—Paul, David, and Mark—and 10 grandchildren between the ages of 13 and 21. Today, we celebrate the lifelong music of Dorothy Kittaka. 2 TAPESTRY: GIVE YOURSELF THE DAY! 2015 SCHEDULE APRIL 24 7:30 a.m. 9 a.m. 9:30 a.m. Check in and early-bird shopping Dedication Breakfast in Expo III wide header Dedication award honoree Dorothy Kittaka8.5” recognized Shop and browse over 150 unique booths 10:30 a.m. Breakout sessions 1–7 (See pages 4–7 for more info) 11:45 a.m. Breakout sessions A–G (See pages 7–10 for more info) 12:45 p.m. Reconnect with friends and co-workers 1:15 p.m. Lunch in Expo III Silent auction tables close Jane Pauley, keynote speaker 2:45 p.m. Meet Jane Pauley, keynote speaker Last chance to visit boutique and trade show exhibits Pick up silent auction items 4 p.m. Grab ’N’ Go Breakfast Station Piping hot, portable breakfast fare, available 7:30 to 9 a.m. Frittata Skillet with Maple Sausage, Veggies, and Cheddar Cheese, served over Red Potatoes with choice of Pepper Gravy or Pico De Gallo toppings Breakfast Table Items Items served at your table during the Dedication Breakfast Fresh-cut Fruit Plate with Hawaiian Delight Dip and a basket of freshly baked assorted Pastries and Croissants Scholarship awards announced 1:45 p.m. TAPESTRY MENU Event closes Lunch Smoked Chicken Breast with Tomato, Pesto, and Arugula on a Pretzel Croissant served with Broccoli Salad tossed with Golden Raisins, Gouda Cheese, and Yogurt Dressing and Orzo Pasta Stuffed Tomato Duo Dessert Crème Brûlée Cheesecake with Caramel Sauce and Whipped Cream and Chocolate Berry Mousse Gluten Free and Vegan options available upon advance request. Girlfriend Getaways—Explore the Opportunities Sponsored by Aging and In Home Services Sponsored by Travel Leaders 11:45 a.m. Session Option B 11:45 a.m. Session Option C Caregiving is like a story—it has a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning is often shrouded in terms like “stopped by Mom’s,” or “looked in on Dad.” Then something happens—Mom fell, or Dad had a stroke— and it’s the middle. Next, the story takes you back to the beginning—only nothing is the same. Where do you turn for services to assist your loved one in maintaining their independence and dignity in their own home? Find the support you need to better understand and perform the caregiver role at Aging and In-Home Services. The conventional concept of women-only group travel is that of spas and shopping; but while those activities certainly have their place and time, there is so much more in the world! Explore the idea of traveling solo or with a group of like-minded women with Sheila Bear of Travel Leaders, who will reveal places to go and things to do as well as offer travel safety tips that apply to everyone.
