The residence measures just over 6,000 sq. ft. “The inside finishes included materials that are easy to maintain but that would wear well. Similar to the CSL project, this enterprise also included the expectation that local, Six Nations tradespeople would be hired. Nith Valley’s nomination states: “Nith Valley investigated each trade to ensure that they were fully qualified... In the end, some local firms were chosen as subs.” The overall appearance of the building was designed “to represent the First Dokis Elder Residence built for the Dokis First Nation in the French River area. Nith Valley is honoured for the St. Mary’s General Hospital Emergency Department at the Kitchener health facility. This project came with enormous challenges – Nith Valley had to construct a new replacement Emergency Department while keeping the present emergency facilities fully operational during demolition and construction. As well, this was accomplished on “one of the smallest construction footprints imaginable, in a quiet, upscale neighbourhood.” And the job involved working “with 58 sub trades and suppliers over the course of three years, using highly specialized construction project techniques.” Moira L. Taylor, President of St. Student Residence at 32 University Ave. E., Waterloo.
