LakeWashington Schools Foundation Invest in students. Invest in our future. ALL in for KIDS! 2014-2015 Lake Washington Schools Foundation Report to the Community Dear friend of Lake Washington Schools Foundation, Thank you for your continued support and commitment to the Lake Washington Schools Foundation. Your investment in public education supports unique programs, services, and opportunities for all students in Lake Washington School District. By being part of this partnership, you play a direct role, not only in making our district a top performing district, but also in fulfilling the vision of making Every Student Future Ready. As a result, all students, PreK-12, are learning, growing and achieving at high levels. Since 2005, the Foundation has awarded over $2 million to support district-wide initiatives and provide classroom tools across grade levels in science, technology, art, literacy, math, engineering and more. We fund programs chosen by our district that ensure students are ready for their futures, provide access to educational opportunities to all students and invest in our highly-qualified teachers. Our board continues to increase its investment goals so we can make a bigger impact on each of the nearly 28,000 students in the 53 schools in our district. But your investment goes beyond what happens inside the school building. Talented workers from around the globe are attracted to our community because of our high performing schools. That influx of talent in turn creates an attractive place to do business, grows the tax base and enhances civic engagement. This virtuous circle is vital to a healthy community. The Foundation’s commitment to a vital community continues as we bring on board our new executive director, Larry Wright. Larry has more than 15 years of experience in the nonprofit sector working with youth and education organizations in Washington State and in Washington, D.C. His passion for supporting public education matches our trustees’ and we are excited about what we can accomplish together. We have big dreams for our district and we know you do too. To help every student achieve their potential, we need you. Your continuing support makes all the difference. With Gratitude, Sarah Stone Board President Dr. Larry Wright Executive Director Dr. Traci Pierce LWSD Superintendent OUR MISSION Lake Washington Schools Foundation raises funds to support academic excellence and success for all students in the Lake Washington School District. OUR VISION Each student in the Lake Washington School District will receive an education that ensures their future success. In doing so, we sustain economic vitality and enrich our community’s quality of life. OUR FUNDING PRIORITIES • Future-ready skills • Quality teaching and leadership • Equal access to educational opportunities With your help... F U T U R E R E A DY STEM Signature Programs: 720 high school students At all Lake Washington School District high schools, STEM Signature Programs and classes provided students an understanding of STEM careers through project-based learning. Students investigated, innovated and thought critically about real-world problems in the areas of global health, environmental engineering and sustainable design. Community and business partnerships provided site visits, real world case studies and professional training for students. Reaching for Success Grants: 10,391 K-12 students Reaching for Success grants allow teachers to develop innovative projects that engage students, provide extra learning opportunities and support each school’s goals. This year, grants funded: kindergarten literacy and readiness, reading and homework clubs, math enrichment, 3D printers, robotics and mock trials. QUALITY TEACHING New Teacher Support Program: 6,500 students, 93 teachers The New Teacher Support Program guides new teachers in their second year of teaching in our district. “Consulting teachers” work one-on one with new teachers by modeling, co-teaching, observing and mentoring -- resulting in improved classroom instruction of our students and a strong start in their teaching career with the district. With your help... EQUAL ACCESS LINKS: 1,120 K-12 students, 301 volunteers Looking Into the Needs of Kids and Schools ( LINKS) is a districtwide, volunteer tutoring and mentoring program that matches caring adults with at-risk students, to enhance the children’s academic, social and emotional development. Volunteers directly impact student learning by serving as Lunch Buddy mentors, academic mentors, and classroom tutors. Safe School Ambassador Program: 3,800 Students At Lake Washington School District high schools, the Safe School Ambassador Program (SSA) engages socially-influential student leaders and trains them to resolve conflicts, defuse incidents and support isolated and excluded students. SSA creates a more positive school community impacting the entire school. Access Fund: 990 middle and high school students The Access Fund, in partnership with InvestEd, enables secondary students in need to get the most out of school by providing small scholarships to pay for school-related expenses. Scholarships help pay for items such as classroom materials, musical instrument rentals, sports equipment and cap & gown rentals. The Access Fund empowers principals and staff to identify and immediately respond to student needs.
