Founded in 1964, the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center is the country’s preeminent organization dedicated to the
development of new works and new voices for American theater. In the bold tradition of its namesake Eugene O’Neill –
four-time Pulitzer Prize Winner and America’s only playwright to win the Nobel Prize in Literature – the O’Neill has been
home to more than 1,000 new works for the stage and to more than 2,500 emerging artists. Scores of projects developed
at the O’Neill have gone on to full production at other theaters around the world, including Broadway, Off-Broadway, and
major regional theaters.

The Monte Cristo Award honors a theater artist who exemplifies the “pioneering spirit,
unceasing artistic commitment, excellence and accomplishment” of Eugene O’Neill, the
only Nobel Prize winning American playwright.

2015 Recipient: Nathan Lane
Known for movie and television roles like Albert in The Birdcage, voice of Snowbell in Stuart Little and Timon in The
Lion King, recurring roles in Modern Family and The Good Wife, Mr. Lane has made quite the impact on the
American stage with memorable and award winning roles as Max Bailystock in the musical The Producers, Oscar
Madison in The Odd Couple, Gomez Addams in The Addams Family, and recently Jimmy Wicker in It’s Only a Play,
to name a few. Along with O’Neill alum Brian Dennehy, Mr. Lane played Larry Slade in the revival of the Eugene
O'Neill play The Iceman Cometh at Chicago's Goodman Theatre in 2012, which was the most successful show in
the history of the Goodman Theater, and will also be in the Robert Falls production of The Iceman Cometh in 2015
at BAM.
Inducted in the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2008, Mr. Lane has received a tremendous amount of honors
and awards for his work including: 5 Drama Desk Awards, 2 Obies, 2 Tony’s and 1 Screen Actors Guild Award.
It’s Only A Play, by Terrance McNally, with co-stars F. Murray Abraham, Matthew Broderick, Stockard Channing,
Rupert Grint, Megan Mullally, and Micah Stock has been well received on Broadway with Ben Brantley from The
New York Times saying it’s “Delirously dishy. It’s Only A Play is a hit!”
