Senator Mario Scavello
40TH DISTRICT
Prior to his election to the Senate, Senator Mario Scavello served more than a decade in
the House of Representatives, representing Monroe County’s 176th Legislative District.
Mario’s House tenure was highlighted by steadfast advocacy of school property tax
reform, and active involvement in the state budget process as a member of the House
Appropriations Committee. He served as majority chairman of the House Labor and
Industry Committee for the 2013-14 legislative session.
Some of his recent legislative accomplishments include the enactment of his legislation
ensuring that patients with prosthetics and orthotic services are receiving care from
properly trained practitioners with a high degree of skill and knowledge.
In an effort to force a change in the way school districts are funded at the state level,
Mario led the charge to file a lawsuit in Commonwealth Court to have the state’s 1991
funding formula ruled unconstitutional. Following the announcement of this lawsuit,
Monroe County school districts received more than $10 million in funding under the
2012-13 state budget.
Throughout his years of public service, Mario has awarded a total of $251,200 from his
public salary for scholarships to college bound students. He has also awarded $25,000 in
savings bonds as a motivational program for students in sixth grade who maintain honor
roll grades.
Mario is Chairman of the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee and Vice Chairman of
the Senate Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee. He also serves on
the influential Senate Appropriations Committee. In addition, he serves on the Labor and
Industry, Urban Affairs and Housing, and Majority Policy committees.
