Falmouth Marine School has been at the heart of the marine industry
for many decades, it has a long history of providing skills training for
the boatbuilding and marine engineering trades and more recently
has become a specialist watersports instructor training centre. Its
specialist marine science and biology courses for school leavers and
undergraduate programmes are the only ones of their kind in an
Further Education college in the UK.
Falmouth prides itself on making all of its provision applied, industry
relevant and at the leading edge of sector developments. All of our
programmes provide our learners with the opportunity for work
experience and getting involved in real-life projects, taking you beyond
qualifications.
In 2015 we have seen the completion of a £3.4 million redevelopment
of our main Killigrew Street campus that includes a state-of-the-art
marine engineering workshop, complete with a commercial engine
room with fuel mapping and diagnostic testing equipment. There
has been a reconfiguration of the marine biology laboratories with
additional tanks and equipment for the marine biology students to use
for their marine breeding programme. In addition there is now a great
new social area for students with an open plan student union, work
stations, and a European style cafeteria with integrated library.
Our boatbuilding students also get the chance to work out of a specialist
FRP unit at Ponsharden boatyard, while watersports students have
their own river-side base in the heart of Falmouth. We also work very
closely with the boatbuilding community and are home to the Marine
Innovation Service, a project that supports local industry through
consultancy on fabrication techniques and sharing of best practice.

enrol. We work with many awarding bodies, such as City &
Guilds or BTEC, to ensure our learners get the curriculum
that is right for their ambitions. There are many terms like
Certificate, Diploma and Extended Diploma, these refer to
the amount of work involved in the programme (units or
modules studied) and indicate the level at which you will
be working.

IN FALMOUTH
Cornwall’s college of the ocean has had a facelift this year, with over £3 million
invested in ensuring the main Killigrew campus is a state-of-the-art training
facility for the marine sector including ocean sciences, technology, watersports
and boatbuilding. There are two other centres in Falmouth that make up the
Marine School, a watersports facility on the water’s edge of the Fal estuary and a
boatbuilding and fabrication unit in Ponsharden boatyard.

“The exhilaration, excitement, adrenalin, constant new challenges
and the command of the open sea drew me to windsurfing at an
early age. I’ve been an instructor since I first qualified at age 14. I
really enjoy helping and watching young instructors develop their
passion into a career on the waves. I’ve spent the last few years
working on our curriculum and embedding instructor training into
our core course offer. I’ve also been able to enhance our students’
employability skills through some really great national initiatives.
We hold an industry day for all our learners every year, where we
invite employers in to talk about careers, they really inspire the
students and some apply and get interviewed at the event. We’ve
even collapsed the course in some instances so students can
complete their qualification early and go and work a complete
season overseas. Former students are working all over the world
right now in places like the South of France, Greece, Canada and
America.
The latest craze is stand up paddle boarding (SUP), getting to grips
with that on the waters off Falmouth has been great fun, it’s a
massive growth area, and we’re making sure we’re at the forefront
of training so when our students leave us they are industry ready.”

“I chose Falmouth Marine School because of my love for
watersports. It appealed to me above everywhere else and I
hoped it would take me to where I wanted to be, and it did!
My college days were amazing, from learning about the human
body and how it works, to being able to sail a Bahia to St Mawes
and back; I loved every moment. I met great people, gained new
skills, learnt about all aspects of the industry, as well as achieved
so many life lessons. I will gladly say that’s because of Falmouth
Marine School.
Since I’ve left the Marine School I’ve worked four seasons in
Falmouth and I’m starting a new one now. In between my seasons
in Cornwall I was also an instructor in sailing, powerboating, stand
up paddleboarding, kayaking and canoing in the South of France,
near Montpellier.
I currently work as a SUP instructor in Falmouth for WeSUP and
I thoroughly enjoy it. I was contacted by a friend who said they
were in need of a new instructor, I applied, had my interview and
away I went on my new awesome job. My working day consists of
a few things; making sure I eat right so I’m energised for the day
ahead whatever it may bring, making sure all the kit is ready, clean
and suitable for the customers, and taking people of all ages out
on lessons. I love it!

Luke is a keen surfer and loves the ocean, so after leaving
school he travelled the world for ten years before getting
back into education and going to university. After graduating
from Plymouth University in 2009 he worked as a research
associate and an environmental consultant, specialising in
pollution, particularly air emissions. Luke joined the ocean
sciences team at Falmouth Marine School as a laboratory
technician. Over the years he has progressed to become
programme manager, he also lectures on the degree
programme.

“I’m a keen seabird researcher, and most of my research is
in this area, where I’m particularly interested in phenotypic
plasticity and kleptoparasitism in Laridae – which is a
fancy way of saying how gulls steal food from people. I’m
also interested in the interaction and breeding success of
seabirds in relation to fisheries, working with organisations
such as the British Trust for Ornithology, Wildlife Trust and
the National Trust. My research has enabled me to work
with some excellent seabird scientists and share what I’ve
learned with my students.
One area of my job that I particularly enjoy is getting
students to conduct their own research. Helping them to
explore questions they create themselves, and driving
them to become scientists is particularly rewarding. So too
is seeing a student come back from a successful interview
for their chosen university and hearing the interviewer was
impressed by the fact they’ve completed their own research.
I get a great buzz knowing that I’ve helped someone gain
the confidence and skills to succeed and put them ahead
of the rest.”

OCEAN SCIENCE DEGREE STUDENT, WORKING ON A
RESEARCH PROJECT FOR OPWALL – OPERATION WALLACEA
“Falmouth Marine School set the foundation for my marine
science career and fuelled my passion for the subject. I’m currently
in the last year of my ocean science degree and working on my
dissertation project in Tela, Honduras investigating the effect
of sea surface temperature increase on the predator avoidance
response of keystone species Diadema Antillarum (long spined
sea urchins).
I knew it was going to be a new and exciting adventure chasing
after my dreams. I got more than I bargained for, experiencing
and learning so much. I had never been to Central America; it
was a new and great experience to travel, meet new people, new
cultures and not to mention a vast new Caribbean Ocean.
The organisation that made this possible was Opwall – Operation
Wallacea and I was privileged to be one of the few to have shared
the experience of surveying the recently discovered reefs at Tela
(Banco Capiro-with six dive sites) and La Ensenada.
I would wake up between 4.30am and 7am depending on the
boat schedule and have my first dive 18km away from shore to
collect my sample of urchins for that day and return the ones from
the day before. I would have another dive later in the day to help
my supervisor with his PhD project and then set up my lab station
and prep the urchins in their tanks ready for the experiment trials
in the evening.
Falmouth Marine School hugely inspired me to participate in
more practical outdoor activities and gave me the motivation to
do my open water diving course before going on the amazing
Egypt trip, and once I breathed underwater I never wanted to
lose the feeling!”

“I grew up in the Midlands and for as long as I can remember my
summer holidays consisted of camping in Devon or Cornwall and
Falmouth was always our ‘rainy day’ place. I fell in love with the
town, the sea and all things marine!
I found the Marine Biology & Ecology BTEC National Diploma
online and applied without hesitation. I studied the course for
two years before progressing onto the FdSc Marine Science
at Falmouth and then continuing my studies with the Open
University, so I could study from home and work at the same time
to gain vital experience.
I got a job at Newlyn Harbour, working on the fish market and
doing odd jobs around the harbour in general. I learnt a great
deal about the maritime environment, but was also able to use
my knowledge of the marine environment to help guide the
harbour in certain operations. I worked there for a year before
being headhunted by Hayle Harbour Authority Operations Ltd.
Currently I’m Assistant Harbour Master at Hayle Harbour. My
role is to provide support to the Harbour Master, to enforce and
operate the Port Marine Safety Code and Health and Safety Policy,
and to deal with all enquiries from the public, local authorities
and clients. I also deal with the accounts for the harbour, patrol
the site twice a day by land and sea, to monitor activity within
the harbour and work closely with Natural England and the
Environment Agency to control the flood gate and undertake
regular surveys. You never know who you are going to be dealing
with on a day-to-day basis, but I think that’s all part of the fun!
Falmouth Marine School helped me to get where I am today by
providing me with the skills to be confident in my abilities. It also
showed me the importance of volunteering and gaining vital
work experience along with my studies.”

Boatbuilding
Study in our dedicated workshops at Ponsharden boatyard,
in the heart of Falmouth’s boatbuilding community. We
have traditional woodwork benches and the very latest FRP
manufacturing system. Our lecturers also consult with local
industry in developing the best manufacturing composite
techniques with our Marine Innovation Service.
Marine Engineering
Our recently refurbished engineering workshops at the
Killigrew Street campus give you a great hands-on learning
environment. We have a range of outboard and inboard
engines for you to study and work on, working through
diagnostic and repair techniques on boats of all sizes.

Simon is a Falmouth Marine School alumni and has worked
with a range of boatyards in the construction of yachts and
small craft. He supervises both the wood and composite
workshops at Falmouth Marine School’s boatbuilding training
centre in Ponsharden boatyard, helping learners on a day-today basis with developing their practical skills, techniques and
project planning. He also acts as a consultant with the College’s
Marine Innovation Service, assisting local businesses who wish
to develop their processes and products in composite boat
manufacturing (FRP).
“I have been fortunate to be involved in a lot of different projects
including developing and delivering specialist courses at the
Marine School, these include; surfboard manufacture, building
kayaks and working with basic composites and an introduction
to resin infusion.
We’ve been able to share some great practical projects with
learners in recent years as well, giving them the chance to work
on real-life commissions is a great insight into the industry.
These have included, the building of a new prototype racing ski,
a small craft (including a mono ski for a person in a wheelchair),
the construction of a new 18ft high speedboat and out of the
water creating moulds for a new local company. The most recent
project is currently on display at the National Maritime Museum
Cornwall, a handmade Viking vessel (Faering).
We try to give our learners a really broad introduction to the
industry, then allow them space to explore what interests them
the most. I also try and show the learners that you can produce
products on a wide range of budgets which can be needed at
times especially when you are building for yourself.”

“When I finished school I decided to do an apprenticeship.
I really enjoyed practical learning and preferred to be
hands-on, so this route suited me.
I was fortunate enough to get an apprenticeship with
Mylor Yacht Harbour Ltd in Falmouth where I worked four
days on-the-job and spent one day a week at college. After
I finished my training I was employed full-time by Mylor
as a marine engineer. I really enjoy my job; it’s varied,
interesting and hard work. Depending on the season, a
typical day for me in the summer is dealing with general
breakdowns and fault finding on the yachts and in the
winter it’s mainly servicing, maintenance and upgrades,
and sometimes engine replacements.
Falmouth Marine School has helped me immensely with
my career; I was enrolled onto a course that I wanted to do
and really suited my needs. The engineering workshop at
Falmouth Marine School is excellent, with a wide range of
outboard and inboards, and the tutors really know what
they are talking about. If you want to go into this industry
I suggest you find a good employer who is willing to

GET OUT THERE AND GET ACTIVE
Get involved in the range of extracurricular sport, fitness and outdoor activities
available from The Cornwall College Group; from recreational to elite, there really is
something for everyone.
Our team of College Sports Makers is dedicated to improving your general health
and fitness and offers the best resources, teaching and coaching that will challenge,
engage and motivate you. They’ll cater for your needs allowing you to develop
individual and team skills and increase your personal strength and fitness; making
sure you get the most out of every activity.
If you’re not sure which activity is right for you, then try them all, for free! We have
access to eight campuses across Cornwall and Devon and we can deliver a great
variety of sporting opportunities you won’t find anywhere else. From sailing in
Falmouth Bay to a round of golf on Duchy College Stoke Climsland’s very own golf
course; opportunities to stay fit and healthy don’t come much better than this.
The Cornwall College Group is affiliated to AoC Sport and takes part in their full
range of competitions covering both team and individual sports. In support of this
programme the College enters the South West Championships in December and if
successful, the National Championships in April, which are held at the University of
Bath. If you are an elite athlete specialising in your chosen sport, why not sign up and
represent the College and try and win gold!
Our Bicton campus boasts a successful partnership with Exeter Rugby Chiefs which
allows you to study alongside the chance to play in the top class league against other
teams and perhaps be selected for the England U18s team. At Duchy College we
have joined forces with Plymouth Argyle Football Club and run a development centre
offering weekly sessions from PAFC coaches; as well as modules on nutrition and
fitness. The West Cornwall Football Development Centre is based at Cornwall College
Camborne where you can enrol on full-time or leisure courses to hone your football
or coaching skills.

FE Bursary Fund
This fund is to help you meet extra costs
e.g. transport and childcare. This fund
is administered by the College, is means
tested and is cash-limited.
Guaranteed Student Bursary
If you are under 19 and living in care, a
care leaver, receiving Income Support in
your own right, a disabled young person
or in receipt of both the Employment
Support Student Allowance and
Disability Living Allowance, you will
be entitled to a Guaranteed Student
Bursary of up to £1,200. You will need to
apply through the FE Bursary Fund for
this.
Transport
If you live more than three miles from
college you may be eligible for support
for your travel costs. If you are under
19 at the beginning of the academic
year in September and are attending a
full-time course at the local designated
institution (usually the provider of your
course nearest your home) you will
qualify for subsidised travel on a Local
Authority (LA) bus.
The College also operates its own
transport and travel arrangements for
students who are not eligible to travel
on LA transport.
Transport Bursary
The Cornwall College Group provides
financial support towards a bus pass
for students aged 16-18 who qualify for
the FE Bursary Fund. Students will be
expected to use a college bus where
possible. A contribution towards travel
costs can also be made to students aged
19 or over at the start of their course.
These awards are means tested and
applied for through the FE Bursary Fund.
Free College Meals
If you are aged 16-18 and received free
school meals, or if your circumstances
have recently changed and you are now in
receipt of certain benefits, you may qualify
for free college meals. Contact Student
Services for further details.
24+ Advanced Learning Loans
If you are thinking about continuing your
education, are over 24 years of age and
want to study a Level 3 qualification or
above, there are government-based loans
available. There is also a means tested,
cash limited bursary to help you meet
transport costs and childcare costs.
Care to Learn
(for learners aged up to 20 years)
Care to Learn is a national scheme for
childcare funding if you are a parent
under 20 years of age. This childcare
support will not affect your own family’s
benefits or allowances. If you are under
20 years of age this support is not meanstested and you do not have to be in
receipt of benefits or have a low income
in order to have your childcare paid for.

Childcare (for learners aged 20+ years)
We are keen to help you with the cost
of your childcare whilst studying. The
childcare subsidy you receive will depend
upon the details submitted by you on
your FE Bursary and childcare support
application form. If you are eligible for
support this will normally be paid direct
to your registered childcare provider.
Accommodation
If you do not live within reasonable
travelling distance of the College you may
wish to consider seeking accommodation
nearby. Student Services can provide
advice on this. Full Residential Bursaries
are available for eligible students. With the
exception of students awarded Residential
Bursaries, accommodation costs are
normally the responsibility of the student,
parent or carer.
Benefits relating to support
There are provisions under the Jobseekers’
regulations, which allow you to study
whilst seeking employment without
losing your benefits. If you are claiming
out of work benefits you should discuss
your proposed attendance at college
with your employment advisor, before
enrolling on a course. It may be possible
for you to return to study if you receive
other benefits (e.g. Income Support,
Housing Benefit etc.), but you must
check with the relevant benefit office
